We can help you find the perfect home for all seasons! Itasca County has long been a favorite destination for year-round recreation. With over 1,000 lakes and nearly limitless public lands, there is certainly no shortage of opportunities for those who love the outdoors. But with more people now able to work from home and live where they want, Grand Rapids is evolving. Moving from a tourism focused identity one of the main hub cities of Northern Minnesota - and a desirable destination for those who would like to escape a bit from the constant rat-race.
The Move It Real Estate Group can guide you to just the right location whether its on water, in the county or right in town.

HISTORIC SITES
Blandin Foundation – The Papermaker Created by artist Ray Wattenhofer. This statue wears the traditional uniform for those working in the paper mill during the turn of the century: buttoned shirt, pants with trousers, and is barefoot. This man, who seems to closely resemble a tall and thin Scandinavian man, holds a slab of paper in hand, and has a wrench in his pocket which would indicate that part of his job included turning of valves. The statue weighs approximately 1,000 lbs and the mold for the statue was destroyed after it was produced. Paul Bunyan’s Chair Created by artists Doug Heiken MacRostie Building Mural Created by GoodSpace Murals and Ashagi Studio. This mural was commissioned by the City of Grand Rapids Arts and Culture Commission as part of an initiative to acknowledge and honor either: the significant relationship that historical and contemporary Ojibwe and/or Dakota people have with this area.
Pokegama Hotel First built in 1982, building burned down in 1893 rebuilt by Daniel Gunn in 1894, who owned and operated it until 1919. Today it serves rental units and retail businesses.
Briers 1937 Herbert B. Brier opened the first Brier Clothing & Shoes on Pokegama Avenue, Bill Brier, Herbert’s son took over in 1954 and ran it until Wendy Green his daughter took over in 1994. Three generations of Briers have operated the store for over 83 years! Old Central School This was the first school in Grand Rapids built in 1888. It was moved to Cohasset in 1894 and replaced with Central School which opened in 1895. Central School was put on the National Historic Registry in 1978.

EDGE OF THE WILDERNESS
Interactive Map
The adventurous voyagers of nearly 300 years ago discovered it and now you can too – The Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway. Welcome to Highway 38, one of the first 20 designated National Scenic Byways. The new interactive map is your compass, designed to guide you through the outstanding natural and cultural history of the region. Celebrate our northern hospitality, hometown pride and the treasures
GRAND RAPIDS
Surrounded by water and woods, Grand Rapids became Itasca County’s permanent seat of government in 1892. Since it was the northern stopping point for Mississippi River steamboats, Grand Rapids was key to developing the area’s logging and paper making industries. As the region’s hub of commerce, Grand Rapids also hosted early resort businesses. First lured by the fishing and hunting frontier, then by seasonal recreation, vacationers of yesterday and today have been attracted to The Edge of the Wilderness.
MARCELL
Welcome to Marcell. When rail lines moved, communities that wanted to survive moved, too. Born from the logging industry, “Olde Marcell” was built in 1901 - 1905 not far from here on Turtle Lake. With the closing of logging operations in the original area and a new railroad spur to Ranier Lake, the buildings were moved here and a new Marcell was built near the railroad tracks in 1911 - 1912. Marcell was truly a town on the move. The town’s name honored Andrew Marcell, the first conductor of trains for the Minneapolis and Rainy River Railroad. Even today, Marcell is a logging town.
of our natural heritage. Minnesota, midway between America’s east and west coasts, is home to 12,000 lakes. It is filled with beautiful country and all the pleasures of the four seasons. The Edge of the Wilderness is the rustic slice of this great state, with more than 1,000 lakes and one mighty river nearby, all in landscapes of remarkable natural beauty. It offers some of Minnesota’s most popular fishing, camping, trail, winter sports and resort opportunities.
BIGFORK
The first residence of Bigfork had the makings of legend, even in his own time. Damase “Uncle Tom” Neveaux arrived here in 1887. Known for his hospitality, Neveaux was affectionately dubbed “Uncle.” The French name Damase translates to Tom. Like most small towns in the region, the logging industry drew people and businesses to support the loggers, mills and the railroad. Log harvesting remains important today as do jobs supporting outdoor recreation and tourism.
EFFIE
Whether you’re beginning or ending your journey in Effie, notice the difference from the rest of the Byway. This is farming country where settlers tended to become permanent residents, far more so than other places on The Edge. Effie also is famous for the North Star Stampede, the annual rodeo that became the biggest open contest of its kind in Minnesota. It’s still held here every summer. The railroad ended at Craig and Craigville, now ghost towns north of Effie, which were infamous for their lumberjacks’ hard-living ways.

Experiencing It is a late morning in June as I step off an old logging road into the forest, and just as I am beginning to feel the warmth of the sun filter through the tall pines, I feel as though I am being watched. I am in search of a bird – a large bird of prey rarely sighted by most avid birders this time of year. My mission is to find the silent ghost of the forest- the elusive great grey owl. I am having trouble finding the large fluffy stick nest propped up in a moss-covered birch tree that I had discovered a month earlier. I have my head on a swivel, searching up in the thick canopy of the naturally regenerated mixed pine forest. As I turn to my left, I am greeted with a deep vacant stare, likely capable of gazing into my soul. A fuzzy great grey owl fledgling is perched on a bent over birch sapling, carefully following my every move with its head swiveling atop its bowling pin-shaped body. I cannot help but playfully giggle to myself, and revel in one of the many moments that The Chippewa National Forest has presented to me. Accessing the 1.6 million acres within the boundaries of the Chippewa is just a short jaunt from the great city of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. With approximately 2300 miles of roads and trails within the forest, it is no wonder I am still accessing untouched pieces that I have never set foot in before. And I have romped throughout this forest every summer for the past five years. The Chippewa is a unique and special forest within the National Forest system. Not only is it the only National Forest to share its management duties with Native American Indians, (the Leech
Lake Band of Ojibwe), but it also boasts the culmination of multiple unique forest ecosystems within it. Head north on Highway 38 toward North Star Lake south of Bigfork and you will find yourself on a landscape that has been heavily glaciated, creating many crystal-clear lakes surrounded by coniferous forest. Northern white cedar, black spruce, and paper birch dominate this landscape with many precious fragile wetlands in between, potentially harboring the precious four-toed salamander mothers guarding their eggs in May. Move to the southwest toward Walker and find yourself reveling in the fall colors of the oak and pine dominated forests surrounding Leech Lake. Watch for migrating hawks, swans, and waterfowl near beaver ponds as you take a hike along portions of the North Country Trail or spend the night snuggling up near a warm fire while camping alongside Hazel Lake. Down in the southeast corner of the forest you will find yourself near Remer within the undulating landscape of the Sugar Hills region. Frolic among the hundred-year-old northern hardwood forest communities in early spring and catch yourself foraging for onion-like ramps and morel mushrooms just as the petite yellow leatherwood shrub flowers begin to awaken. If you are observant, you will notice the thin golden bark of the yellow birch tree. Scratch at it with your fingernail, and it will smell like wintergreen. As we transition into the year 2021, we hope for good times and the best moments in life to come. Park alongside an unnamed forest road and wander along the trails of discovery within the Chippewa National Forest. Take the time to discover moments alongside unique plants and wildlife that will truly sink in with you for the rest of your life. WWW.VISITGRANDRAPIDS.COM

You can’t have Minnesota without winter, and these locals do not take our longest season for granted. Embrace winter up north with a guided fishing trip, fat tire ride or snowshoe adventure.
DOG SLEDDING: Experience dog sledding with Soumi Hills Kennel. Take an unforgettable adventure will enjoying the wintery landscape of Minnesota.
FAT TIRE BIKING: “My family loves mountain biking and we carry that enjoyment into winter. Fat tire biking is a great way to get out and exercise. The experience is different, as winter biking is generally slower, so you get to see things in nature differently. Plus, if you bike with lots of snow, all the crashes are a lot softer.” – Dr. Philip Imholte, GRIMBA
– Suomi Hills Kennel Location: Forest History Center
SNOWMOBILING: “It is a different perspective in the winter. You see things you can’t see and go places you can’t go any other time of the year.” – Les Ollila, Snowmobile Enthusiast
SNOWSHOEING: Snowshoe through the vistas along the old pines to breathtaking winter views. There are over 1 million acres of public land that you can snowshoe in the Grand Rapids, MN area.
28 WWW.VISITGRANDRAPIDS.COM
ICE FISHING: “Nearly every species of angling opportunities are available and people from around the country are aware of what a great destination we have to offer. From walleyes to muskies there isn’t a location in Minnesota that offers so many opportunities.” – Tom Neustrom, Professional Guide
Come Make Winter Memories Many anglers all over the country have realized what a “Jewel” Grand Rapids, Minnesota is in terms of an ice fishing destination. A diverse variety of species that offers several options, the lakes of Grand Rapids offer good fishing and breathe taking scenery. WALLEYES – numerous lakes within 25 miles that give you a chance for success. Many have good options at catching a trophy and most produce nice eating size walleyes. Some of the lakes to pay close attention to for walleyes are Pokegama, Bass Lake, Trout Lake in Coleraine, Big Splithand, Big Cutfoot, Lake Winnibigoshish, Bowstring and Jessie lakes. They all have good access locations to the lake and will provide good options for success. PANFISH – one of the most sought-after species in the Grand Rapids area and with nearly 1000 lakes that contain bluegills and most with crappies also. Light tackle and good electronics can be key to success and drilling several holes in a likely area can also be important. Good panfish anglers “hole hop” until they find good concentrations of fish. Some of the lakes in the Grand Rapids area that provide consistent panfish options are Pokegama, Big and Little Splithand, Bass, Big and Little Bowstring, Little Moose, Rush Island, Big and Little Cufoot just to mention a few.
NORTHERN PIKE – many anglers chasing northerns fish tip ups along break lines and weed beds and it’s fun to watch that flag go up and chase to spool spinning off the reel. Live and dead bait work equally well at times. But it is hard to beat a lively sucker or large shiner minnow for good results. Darkhouse spearing is another successful way to take northern pike in the winter and can be equally fun watching a fish come in to strike a decoy that is suspended in the large hole you are sitting above. Artificial swimming decoys or a large sucker minnow are most often the bait of choice for spearers. There also are countless lakes for good opportunities for northern pike. Pokegama, Trout, Lake Winnibigoshish, Wabana, North Star, Spider lakes are all good options for good northern pike options.
Snowmobiling is the best!
In northern Minnesota, the word cold is not used until the temperature sinks to below zero, otherwise it just “Chilly”. Cold and snow is where it is at! The two ingredients that are needed for great snow mobile trails and for a great snowmobile ride! Yes, there is snow everywhere in the northern hemisphere, but NORTHERN Minnesota celebrates its history of where the first snowmobiles were made. Pioneers seen the snowmobile as a tool. WHAT? Well, it did not take long for the sport of snowmobiling to take off and consumers everywhere had to have one. I was introduced to snowmobiling in the winter of 1969 as a 11-year-old boy that could not wait till I could get behind the handlebars of that fine machine. I cannot even imagine a winter with out snowmobiling! Itasca County has 13 dedicated snowmobile clubs that take great pride in the preservation of their trails! The Itasca County trail system has over one thousand miles of groomed trails. You can ride right from many of the lodges, hotels, and resorts. The Itasca trails are also linked to many other trail systems, including the Taconite Trail. No matter what your skill level and no matter how far you want to go, our trails can take you there. You will be met with great topography as well as beautiful overlooks of wilderness, rivers, and lakes.
enjoying the winter as much as you are! These cozy, off the beaten path bar/restaurants, are just the ticket for making memories you will be talking about for years to come. Many of the clubs celebrate the winter snowmobiling sport with winter picnics. The welcome mat is out for everyone on a snowmobile. It is a great way to share the sport with our younger generations and to show everyone what a trail groomer does and how it makes our trails so great! The comradery of the snowmobile family reaches far and wide. If you are riding and you need a break, there are many “Shelters” on the trail that will provide a wonderful spot to take a break and get warm by the fire! I hope to see you out on the trail! Be safe out there! Up to date Snowmobile Maps are available at most lodging properties and visitor centers. These maps clearly lay out the shelters, food and gas stops along the trails.
Along with the beauty of the trails, there are many restaurants, old bars, and gas stations to keep your ride fun and with a full belly to keep you warm. Numerous stops will be shared with many other snowmobilers WWW.VISITGRANDRAPIDS.COM

MY COMMUNITY, MY BANK ™
“I’ve done my personal banking with Grand Rapids State Bank for 25 years. I love the feel of a small hometown bank: you know the people you’re dealing with, people who have the knowledge of their products and have the ability to get things done. I can walk in and walk out knowing that what I needed to get done is being handled professionally and efficiently. That’s how you provide value to customers, and I appreciate doing business with a bank like that. When you have people like GRSB staff members that are knowledgeable, experienced, with a friendly touch, it is no wonder they can compete so well against larger banks. This is my community and my bank.” Dan Drennen, GRSB Customer
