Gozo Opera Season 2023

OPERA IS GOZO 2023

Our love for opera comes from our cultural influence and proximity to Italy and Sicily.

As early as 1631 several artists, including singers and musicians arrived in Malta from nearby Syracuse to stage drammi per musica at the invitation of the Italian Knights of the Order of St John. Since 1736, the Manoel Theatre in Valletta, or Teatro Pubblico, as it was then known, presented baroque operas including those by Maltese composer Nicolò Isuoard. Then, on 9th October 1866, a more spacious Royal Opera House in Valletta was officially inaugurated.

Gozo has two large opera houses on the opposite sides of the same street, which have a friendly rivalry spurring each other on.  Few European cities can boast of having one opera house – but having two in one street is quite a feat!

Gozo’s Opera Month, held yearly in October, is an important fixture on the international classical music calendar. The festival includes two fully staged operas performed at Aurora and Astra Opera Houses in Victoria as well as recitals, opera appreciation workshops and activities for seasoned operagoers right through to opera newbies.

Our highly acclaimed operas would be impossible to co-ordinate without the support of locals, being craftsmen, seamstresses and volunteers, who donate their talents and time to build sets, craft costumes and to manage theatre box offices. So, these elaborate operas are the result of a community effort and the culmination of a whole year of hard work. Opera made in Gozo can be described as opera for the people, by the people.

This year, Aurora Opera House will present us Puccini’s classic Madama Butterfly. It was the first opera that the Leone Philharmonic Society presented at the Aurora Opera House back in January 1977. As the Leone Philharmonic Society is celebrating its 160th anniversary, it turns, once more, to this Puccini evergreen. Hence, Madama Butterfly returns to Aurora on Saturday 14th October.

Verdi’s distinguished three act opera, Rigoletto, the first opera of Verdi’s famous trilogy which comprises also Il Trovatore and La Traviata, will take stage at the Astra Opera House. The opera, which owes most of its popularity to the way the modesty and delicacy of the music engulfs the listeners’ emotions, will be staged on 26th and 28th October.

We invite you to participate and appreciate the program that together, we managed to prepare so that Gozo continues to establish itself as a renowned opera destination.
