OPERA IS GOZO
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Opera in Gozo 2025; our island’s October tradition that unites artistry, community, and heritage. Building on previous programmes, this season extends opera’s magic well beyond the stage, with concerts, lectures, exhibitions, and family-friendly events that animate the entire island of Gozo.
This year’s events open on Friday, 3rd October with Ewfonija: The Grand Operatic Concert, featuring the baton of Mariella Spiteri Cefai and soloists Nico Darmanin and Nicola Said; an evening of timeless arias and orchestral colour. On 10th October, the beloved “Symphony of Lights” transforms Santa Luċija into a luminous open-air stage, free for all and steeped in village warmth.
The operatic centrepiece begins on Saturday, 11th October at Teatru tal-Opra Aurora with Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino”, an epic of fate and identity in a bold new staging. The month crescendos with Puccini’s Tosca at Teatru Astra on 23rd and 25th October, flanked by a clarinet-piano recital on 24th October and Dr John Galea’s lecture “Power, Passion and Puccini: The Tragic World of Tosca” on 25th October.
Around our headline operas, audiences can also enjoy the Aurora International Folk Festival, Intermezzo for Strings and the one-hour Piano at the Opera recital. Exhibitions by the Gozo Philatelic Society’s “Philatelic Opera and Classical Music” at Il-Ħaġar and MUŻajk by Mary Portelli, invite reflection on culture and place throughout the season.
Opera in Gozo strengthens education, supports local businesses and showcases the craft of our imposing theatres, choirs, orchestras, crews, and volunteers. I would like to thank Teatru tal-Opra Aurora, Teatru Astra, our artists, sponsors, and public partners. May Opera in Gozo 2025 inspire, uplift, and remind us that great art belongs to everyone.

OCTOBER SATURDAY
LA FORZA DEL DESTINO
La Forza del Destino is opera at its most theatrical— where no one is truly who they seem. A nobleman masquerades as a student, a South American dons the identity of a Spanish soldier, and a noblewoman takes on both male attire and the solemn robes of a hermit. In their desperate attempts to flee destiny, they all transform—revealing that costume and identity are central to Verdi’s gripping tale.
This deep connection between disguise and fate is powerfully brought to life in Riccardo Buscarini’s bold new production. With evocative sets by Giammaria Farina, expressive costumes by Mara Pieri, and atmospheric lighting by Moritz Zavan Stoeckle, every visual element reinforces the opera’s emotional core.
But La Forza is also a feast for the ears—brimming with sweeping arias and thunderous choruses. At the helm is Colin Attard, masterfully conducting the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, the Aurora Opera Chorus, and an international ensemble of outstanding opera voices.
Tickets are obtainable from www.teatruaurora.com or via the ticket helpline +356 7904 5779.
