Easter in Gozo 2023

L-Għid f’ Għawdex huwa dejjem żmien speċjali għalina l-Għawdxin u għar-residenti ta’ din il-gżira għaliex huwa ż-żmien meta l-fidi u t-tradizzjonijiet jiltaqgħu.

Għal dan iż-żmien tas-sena, ilMinisteru għal Għawdex jimpenja ruħu li jfassal kalendarju kulturali mimli attivitajiet relatati ma’ dawn il-jiem qaddisa ta’ żmien l-Għid. Jikkumplimenta dan il-kalendarju nsibu t-temp mill-isbaħ li taf toffrilna r-rebbiegħa, ix-xenarji mill-aqwa tal-ambjent rurali Għawdxi, imma, fuq kollox, l-atmosfera spiritwali awtentika li għadha ħajja u vivaċi fostna.

L-Għid f’Għawdex huwa impenjattiv ferm għax jirrikjedi organizzazzjoni profonda u dettaljata, ikkordinata mill-Ministeru għal Għawdex, li tinvolvi ħafna nies. Diversi purċissjonijiet li jterrqu madwar l-irħula tagħna, esibizzjonijiet fid-diversi forom tagħhom, daqq tal-qniepen, marċi tal-banda u statwi, kollha jagħmlu l-Għid f’Għawdex esperjenza awtentika. Id-daqq tal-qniepen biex iħabbru l-qawmien millmewt ta’ Sidna Ġesù Kristu f’jum l-Għid il-Kbir u l-purċissjonijiet bl-istatwa tal-Irxoxt, iqanqlu fina bosta drawwiet li għaddew minn ġenerazzjoni għall-oħra.

Permezz tal-programm ta’ attivitajiet “L-Għid f’Għawdex”, qed nassiguraw li nżommu ħajjin bosta tradizzjonijiet u noffru esperjenza differenti lil dawk kollha li jagħżlu lil Għawdex f’dawn il-jiem. Għalhekk, inħeġġiġkom sabiex tingħaqdu magħna u tesperjenzaw dak li kapaċi toffri l-gżira Għawdxija f’dan iż-żmien sabiħ li matulu l-fidi u t-tradizzjonijiet jitwaħħdu.

Easter in Gozo is always a special time of the year, a time within which faith and traditions inextricably intertwine.

A visit to Gozo at this time of the year will surprise one and all with gorgeous spring weather and lush countryside. The spiritual atmosphere is then complemented with a jampacked cultural calendar. Whilst many religious events are held across the island, different family events are also organised, making your stay in Gozo a truly memorable one.

Easter in Gozo seems far busier in the religious calendar than Christmas, due to its extensive programme and organisation. This ranges from several street processions, pageants, tableaux, displays, bell ringing, band marches, statue carrying to passion plays. This time of the year entails thorough organisation, coordinated by the Ministry for Gozo, to deliver these religious spectacles. The toiling of the church bells and the processions with the statue of l-Irxoxt, the Risen Christ, harks back to customs which have shaped our communities for centuries.

Through the well-crafted “Easter in Gozo” programme of events, we are offering a rich experience of ancient traditions that have survived from one generation to the other. The crowd, and children wearing Biblical costumes holding palm and olive branches, gather along the crossroads of Church Street. From there, the Archpriest will lead a procession towards the church accompanied by the singing of the hymns. Upon arrival, the Archpriest knocks on the church door with the Crucifix and on the third symbolic knock, the doors open.
