Galena & U.S. Grant Museum
GALENA
With more than 87 percent of its buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Galena’s prominent past remains a permanent fixture. Once the center of America’s lead mining boom, the town quickly grew into a thriving river port and cultural hub. The wealth of that era can still be seen today in Galena’s remarkable architecture — elegant mansions, limestone homes and brick storefronts that line its streets.
But history doesn’t stop at Galena’s city limits. Throughout Galena Country, every small town and scenic byway carries its own stories, offering not just a glimpse of the past, but a chance to walk through history that continues to shape the present.
A new museum location is currently underway and aiming for a 2026 opening, but visitors can still experience the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum’s hallmark exhibits. Steer a remote-controlled steamboat, explore a preserved mining shaft, and view Thomas Nast’s original “Peace in Union” painting.
