Tour Like an Insider: My Favorite Festival Johnny Appleseed Festival. This authentic pioneer festival offers the best food, crafts and entertainment you’ll find anywhere!
Discover Charm, Just Down the Road – in Grabill, Indiana Fort Wayne may be the main attraction for visitors in northeast Indiana, but there are charming towns off the beaten path, just waiting to be enjoyed. Grabill, Indiana is among those gems.
Speaking of shopping, other options include the Tree Shops, Mother Hubbard’s, and the Lumberyard Shops. Among them is Simple Pleasures, a country shop filled with gift items and home décor.
Head northeast from downtown Fort Wayne, and you’ll come across this quaint little town. Be forewarned, as it’s a bit of a time warp. Think former homes turned into shops, antique stores, and other nostalgic draws.
Another nod to the days of yesteryear, H. Souder & Sons General Store, looks like something right out of an old western movie. The façade resembles an old country store, and the inside boasts old-time treats and kitsch. Think Coke memorabilia, ice cold bottled soda, penny candy, homemade jams, fresh roasted coffee, and local Amish cookies and baked goods.
One item to add to your to do list is the Country Shops of Grabill, an impressive store loaded with antiques, primitives, finished oak, glassware, painted furniture, and other unique items. Be sure to catch the indoor flea market, 10 am to 5 pm, Monday-Saturday, year-round. You can find everything here from an antique pipe organ to handbags.
A day of shopping calls for some nourishment. Why not visit the town’s full-service restaurant, the Grabill Inn. Here they serve standard American fare with an impressive menu − everything from frittatas to chili cheese nachos. And then, be sure to top off your meal with a sweet treat from the Grabill Dairy Sweet. It’s a tasty way to end a lovely day.
—Kayleen Reusser
We never miss Greek Fest. It’s a culinary heaven for foodies like us, and the best place to get authentic Greek fare for a reasonable price.
—Amber Recker
Three Rivers Festival offers something fun and unique to experience every day. We come downtown to enjoy the festival nearly every day that week!
After a day in Grabill, you will likely find out why they are known as “A Friendly Little Town.” Visit them online at www.grabill.net

Q: What to do? A: Bring our mobile visitors information with you when you come to town!
Golf the I-69 Golf Trail Each year, Northeast Indiana welcomes thousands of visitors who enjoy our beautiful lakes, outstanding attractions, and friendly communities. And over the last decade, guests to the region have noticed an explosion of world-class golf courses. New in 2013, golfers of every skill level will have the opportunity to “stay-and-play” six of these premiere golf courses on the I-69 Golf Trail. Challenging and exciting golf awaits you and in Northeast Indiana. Traveling south from Michigan on I-69, you first arrive in Auburn, at the Bridgewater West and Bridgewater East golf courses. Each course offers a different challenge, as the East course features creeks and ponds alongside the Indiana landscape, while the West course is an old-style, shotmaking course. Continue your journey down I-69 and you will reach Cherry Hill Golf Club and Autumn Ridge Golf Club, located in Fort Wayne. Challenging but fair, both courses feature first-class service, and top-notch clubhouses and dining options. At Cherry Hill, be prepared to face one of Indiana’s most popular holes: the heart-beating, palmsweating, hole #6 - a par-3 island green surround completely by water. 39
The southernmost courses on the I-69 Golf Trail, Walnut Creek and Club Run, are located in Grant County and designated as golf complexes, with exclusive practice and learning facilities. In 2011, Walnut Creek was awarded the Course of the Year by the Indiana Chapter of National Golf Course Owners Association and carries a 4-star Golf Digest rating. Walnut Creek golf professional Randy Ballinger believes playing the I-69 trail will offer golfers an opportunity to expand their playing experience. “I have often said that Indiana doesn’t have to take a back seat to anywhere in the world for golf,” Ballinger adds. “We are affordable, accessible, playable, and have more playable days than most areas of the country.” With six courses (and countless other nearby courses and activities) awaiting you and your group, take advantage of the Stay N’ Play package, which includes green fees and hotel stay at one low cost.

Discover Your Roots at The Genealogy Center One of Fort Wayne’s many treasures is The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library. The Genealogy Center is home to the nation’s largest public genealogy collection, and it is housed in a gorgeous new $65 million facility. At over fifty years old, The Genealogy Center is home to over 340,000 print volumes and 590,000 microfilm resources. These holdings include family and local histories from the United States, Virgin Islands, Ireland, and Eastern Europe. The five rooms of The Genealogy Center and its online catalog include international collections, historical periodicals, ship passenger lists, military regimental histories, southern plantation records, Native American census records, and tribal records, to name a few. The Genealogy Center offers several computer banks for research as well as wireless internet services throughout the facility.
The Genealogy Center is led by trained genealogy staff and provides free resources to get visitors started in their genealogical research. One way to start is by taking a video tour of the Center and reviewing the suggested plan to get started in genealogical research. These planning tools are available on the Center’s website at www.genealogycenter.org.
Plan a trip to discover your family heritage, right here in Fort Wayne at the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center. www. genealogycenter.org

The Dish on Fort Wayne
FroYo
Ice cream may be america’s favorite frozen treat, but frozen yogurt (froyo for short) is likely a close second. FroYo is easy to find in the Summit City. Just a few current options include Yo Yo: Yogurt on Your Own, Yogoland, Spoonz, Yum Yums: Yogurt U Make, Orange Leaf and Menchie’s.
Speaking of decor, all shops are brightly colored and decorated in a fun, kid-friendly style. The environment really makes a trip for frozen yogurt feel like a special treat.
Inside you will find a wall of self-serve machines offering up yogurt options for the customer to create frozen concoctions. Next is the best part: the toppings bar, of course! Here, you can adorn your yogurt creation with everything from strawberries to chocolate chip cookie dough pieces.
Icy desserts are a summer staple. Make yours frozen yogurt – it is a customizable, affordable treat.
Yearning for something out of the ordinary? Chances are, you’re in luck. Flavors at each shop run the gamut from standard vanilla, to strawberry, to cookies and cream. Some stores even have a few sugarfree options. Bottom line: there is something for everyone. And, for the sugar junkie, many offer edible waffle cups. Insider’s Note: The cost of the yogurt is determined by weight. Most stores charge about 40 cents per ounce. So, for a moderate amount of yogurt with toppings, expect to pay about $5.00. Most offer outside seating, which is perfect for a warm summer night.

Tour Like an Insider: “Off the Beaten Path” I love to eat, and my favorite “off the beaten path” activity is to grab brunch at Pickles Cafe in Dunfee. I can enjoy an outstanding and creative meal and then do some country store-style shopping where you least expect it. —Whitney Caudill Visit Foster Park in the spring to see hundreds of tulips and other bulbs in bloom! —Kayleen Reusser I highly recommend the Brass Rail to music lovers of all genres. From heavy metal to Americana, their acts run the gamut. There aren’t too many places in town where you can catch a quality outof-town band on a Tuesday night. Make sure you order a PBR! —Lauren Caggiano My husband and I bike a lot during the summer months and we especially like the stretch of trail between South Kensington and New Haven. It offers over 13 miles round trip of uninterrupted trail along the river and through the woods. We also love spending an afternoon at one of the many Splash Pads around town. We especially like Taylor’s Boundless playground at Kreager Park.

Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital
5818 Maplecrest Rd. • (260) 426-1062 www.nives24h.com

In 2012, a vibrant series of videos was produced to highlight the region’s best and brightest, through the “Your Story. Made Here.” project. The videos, produced by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, showcase the region’s assets from downtown Fort Wayne to Northeast Indiana lake country! The videos show how one community can produce the varied stories of businessmen and bull riders, entrepreneurs and engineers, musicians and managers—and not just how they make a living, but how they make a difference and have fun, too. Visitors are invited to view these videos online at yourstorymadehere.com.

Those interested in what downtown Fort Wayne has to offer should check out “A Vibrant Heart.” In this video, learn how downtown Fort Wayne has been transformed into a hub for arts, music, fashion, and community. The residents of Northeast Indiana are making a great living, and have a great story to share. Whether you’re looking for a new band on a weekday night or farm-to-fork five-star dining in a country setting, you’ll find it in Northeast Indiana.
