Leaf Peepers Road Trip South on Highway 89 — Those looking for the first colors of the season should head to the Carson Pass, Hope Valley and Monitor Pass regions. Here, expansive hillsides of quaking aspen flame brilliant gold, with occasional hints of orange. The dark blue high-elevation skies, craggy snow-dusted peaks, and greenishblack conifers are a dramatic contrast.
7
If you are looking for Mother Nature’s annual show of colors this is the road trip for you. The aspen, oak, maples, cottonwood, and dogwood trees explode in color from late September through early December. During harvest season the grapevines reveal an amazing color palette which, of course, pairs well with any wine-tasting adventure.
8
There is no better place to start a fall exploration than Apple Hill™ — Brilliant fall colors provide a beautiful backdrop for this bucolic farm region. Sample a multitude of apple and pumpkin delicacies at the many farms and orchards while you view the splendor of fall. Located in Camino off Highway 50.
Sorensen’s Resort & Café is a historic settlement that dates to 1926 and Danish immigrant Martin Sorensen who opened a service station, store and dance floor. Today 35 cabins, a café and gift and book store, all surrounded by stands of aspen near the West Fork Carson River.
Smith Flat House Restaurant & Grill – Built in 1853 on top of a gold mine, this is truly unique dining experience that should not be missed. Local sourced ingredients and creative menu.
Kirkwood Resort – The turning aspens make a beautiful backdrop to one of the region’s largest year-round mountain resorts during the fall months. In the summertime, Kirkwood turns into a picturesque high alpine adventure playground with fields of wildflowers that will take your breath away. Winter is known for its deep snow and pristine beauty.

Especially showy stands are located in and around Carson Pass, especially east of Caples Lake and the turnoff to Woods Lake. East of Carson Pass, Hope Valley offers spectacular displays of fall colors.
4 That huge granite dome rearing 600 feet above the American River Canyon is Lover’s Leap, a popular climbing area and well worth a hike. The more ambitious road tripper can make a pit stop at the Camp Sacramento parking area. From the trailhead it is a moderate 45 minute walk uphill rewarded with views of Horsetail Falls, Pyramid Peak, Ralston Peak and the American River Canyon.
its center piece, the trail system winds through thick forested areas and open meadows while closely following the lake shore. Perfect spot to hike, horseback ride, peddle, paddle, swim, fish, water ski or just relax with a picnic.

Hop on a Hog
If you are on 2 wheels we are going to assume you are a little more adventurous and not scared off by a road trip with stops like Hell Hole, Ice House, Stumpy Meadows or the infamous Old Hangtown. These backroads wind through the Sierra Nevada Foothills alongside lakes, rivers and reservoirs, majestic pines, rolling hills and ranches. Best time for this one is May through October. Start in Placerville, known as “Old Hangtown” during the rough and rowdy days of the California gold rush. Placerville was the seat of law and order where criminals met with swift justice often at the end of a rope, hence the early name of Hangtown.
1
Stumpy Meadows Reservoir — a perfect peaceful rest stop setting surrounding by forest with easy access to the water. Campers come here to while away warm summer days on the lake and enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. The campground provides easy access to both hiking and biking trails.
6
Georgetown – The historic town of Georgetown was a hub of the productive gold mining region, and residents proclaimed the town the “pride of the mountains.” Today the quaint shops and eateries, art gallery, parks and pubs, and unique accommodations make it a great place to spend the day.
7
2
Take a left on Marshall Grade for a bird’s view of the American River and Coloma the area not only known for its Gold Rush discovery site but also west coast’s most popular whitewater resource. Suitable for kids 7 to 75, a whitewater rafting trip combines the river’s natural beauty, rich historical background, and exciting rapids into one great whitewater vacation experience.
3 It is here that you can take a worthwhile detour by continuing 5 miles to Loon Lake which is the northwestern edge of Desolation Wilderness, lots of granite at an elevation of 6300.
Follow Highway 49 north & west on Salmon Falls Road. This is a scenic drive that winds through the bountiful backroads of El Dorado County crosses over the American River and provides views of Folsom Lake.
Head east on Hwy 50 toward S. Lake Tahoe with a full tank of gas and pioneer spirit. Take in beautiful views of the American River Canyon. Take Ice House Rd. which winds through the Crystal Basin past Ice House and Union Valley Reservoirs. Follow Ice House Rd. about 20 miles to Wentworth Springs Road.
8

4
Go West on Wentworth Springs Road; then right on Eleven Pines (or Forest Hwy 2) to get to Hell Hole reservoir. The sight of that sapphire water in a Sierra gorge will take your breath away.
Hell Hole Reservior
Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a bar that dates back to 1864 and looks it. It is one of those places any family, 4-wheelers, motorcyclist, or explorer would feel at home. Stop in for a drink or snack. Bring a picnic use one of the many BBQ grills and tables or play a round of horseshoes.

Eldorado National Forest The Eldorado National Forest offers amazing places for hiking, biking, fishing, camping, skiing, nature viewing and scenic drives. Desolation Wilderness Desolation Wilderness, located west of Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County, may be considered small for a wilderness area at nearly 64,000 acres, but it compensates with dramatic scenery ranging from starkly beautiful granite to cerulean blue alpine lakes. Visitor permits are required year-round for both overnight and day hikes. Its many glacially formed lakes and streams make it one of the most scenic stretches of the Pacific Crest Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail. El DoraDo County Farm trails & Visitors’ GuiDE | 20

BASSI FALLS
HORSETAIL FALLS
Directions: From Hwy 50 about 20 miles east of Placerville, turn left (north) onto Ice House Rd. Drive 15.9 miles on Ice House Rd. to Union Valley Reservoir. A big parking area that leads to Millionaire Campground.
Hiking level: Moderate to strenuous
Hiking level: Easy to moderate Dogs allowed: Yes Route: Out & Back Elevation Gain: 358 ft Located in the Eldorado National Forest off Ice House Road near Placerville, this 100+ foot waterfall is well worth the drive. It’s approximately 4.7 miles round trip from the parking lot. Beginning at Millionaire campground the trail follows the creek up to the big waterfall, a combination of dirt trail and granite. Bassi Creek hurtles 109 ft. over a granite cliff, crashing over and through many large rocks. It is simply an awesome display of power and force. Note that in early spring there may still be snow patches on the ground, so plan accordingly. Best time Late April through May.
22 | El DoraDo County Farm trails & Visitors’ GuiDE
Dogs allowed: Yes Route: Out & Back Elevation Gain: 639 ft A little further up Highway 50 from Bassi Falls is Horsetail Falls, a dramatic 800-foot waterfall flowing down the glaciercarved granite of Desolation Wilderness. The first part of the hike, along granite fields, offers beautiful views as it takes you to the base of the falls, which can be a destination unto itself. It quickly becomes strenuous as it ascends up 500 feet along Pyramid Creek. The second part of the hike is for experienced hikers with orienteering skills, as the trail is not clearly defined.

EAGLE FALLS
CASCADE FALLS
Directions: From Hwy 50 about 20 miles east of Placerville, turn left (north) onto Ice House Rd. Drive 15.9 miles on Ice House Rd. to Union Valley Reservoir. A big parking area that leads to Millionaire Campground.
Hiking level: Moderate
Hiking level: Easy to moderate Dogs allowed: Yes Route: Out & Back Elevation Gain: 1,712 ft Lake Tahoe has no shortage of beautiful scenery, but waterfall lovers know to head to Emerald Bay, where a short hike results in the spectacular Eagle Falls, which feeds into Emerald Bay. From the Eagle Falls trailhead, it’s a 5-minute walk to the bridge that gets you up close and personal with the falls. Continue up the trail for another .25 mile to Eagle Lake, where you’re surrounded by towering granite.
Visit-ElDorado.com
Dogs allowed: Yes Route: Out & Back Elevation Gain: 255 ft Another gem of a waterfall hike located at Emerald Bay by the Bayview campground, this hike promises views from the top of the rushing 200 foot Cascade Falls, with views of Cascade Lake below and Lake Tahoe beyond. The approximately 2-mile round trip gently climbs up and contours above Cascade Lake. Experienced hikers may want to continue past Cascade Lake into Desolation Wilderness to Azure Lake.

The Tregilgas have been married for 14 years, and along with their 4 daughters (fondly known as the Feral Farm Kids), they have settled into a farming lifestyle that has the essential elements of hard work, dedication, resilience, responsibility and commitment, along with a sense of wonder, joy and opportunity as they work, live and play together. As depicted by the name, Free Hand Farm is like a free-hand sketch put to paper or land-lines can be drawn and then fluidly changed. The life this family leads is enriched by restorative freedom and choice in how they plan, manage and care for everything on their 95-acre farm, and then share it with others.
milking herd, and the farmer is paid to care for and milk the animals. Also available from Free Hand Farm are 100% grassfed lamb, beautiful tanned sheepskins, yarn, roving, and raw wool for crafting and spinning. In keeping with the Tregilgas family’s mission of PHOTOS COURTESY: Free Hand Farms regenerative land management, their flock of sheep is beginning to do targeted grazing projects off the farm, benefitting the El Dorado County landscape by reducing fuel load and increasing biodiversity. Take a beautiful virtual walk on the farm by visiting facebook. com/Freehandfarm or the website www.freehandfarm.com. To find out more about visiting the farm, call (530) 295-9458.
“We are fully committed to our partnership with the land, our livestock, our family and our community. We believe that adaptive management allows us to increase animal and soil health, providing the most nutritious food possible to our family and community,” both Spencer and Melissa shared. They have farmed on historic Veerkamp land for 5 years, utilizing many aspects of the pastoral setting. Grass-fed Jersey cows are milked in a quaint 1930s dairy barn, where fresh, chilled milk is put into glass bottles, ready for pick-up. The milk is available in “herd shares” where customers buy shares of a Visit-ElDorado.com

t’s the love of the land and their family that brought Spencer and Melissa Tregilgas back to the Sacramento region, even though they enjoyed living on the East Coast and in Panoche, Calif., prior to moving to Placerville. Both Melissa and Spencer were involved in the Arts, but their children arrived and grew, as did their desire of having a more family-oriented life; one they preferred to observe first-hand and be an active part of.

You can find a map showing all of the named streams and creeks on the west slope of El Dorado County simply by visiting eldoradotu.org. Once there you can select your favorite stream, then check the fish index attached which shows you the type of trout you can expect to find on the end of your line when fishing that water. All streams that drain into the American River watershed are open year round with certain restrictions. PHOTO COURTESY: Pat Dollins 48 | El DoraDo County Farm trails & Visitors’ GuiDE

Frustrated at having to close up shop due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many local business owners are glad to see Gov. Gavin Newsom finally lifting some restrictions. While curbside service is still the order of the day for many, certain retail outlets will be allowed to open as of Friday such as bookstores, flower shops and toy stores. Restaurants may open for dine-in service once the county submits a “containment plan” to the state. WINE COUNTRY
IN EL DORADO COUNTY
EL DORADO WINE TRAILS The El Dorado wine region has attracted attention from critics and consumers around California and beyond. With over 150 years of history steeped in gold and agriculture, the region is poised for its newfound resurgence in viticulture. Our wineries are renowned for making vibrantly flavorful, distinctly delicious wines, grown in the dramatic elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Nearly 70 wineries throughout the El Dorado County offer outstanding value, taste, and variety with frequent opportunities to meet the winemakers and owners.
