CARNIVAL of COLOURS
Your Space Circus presents

We’ve gathered a whole host of circus, music & artsy madness… more bunting than you can cope with, grassy spaces, major tunes & some utterly delicious Legenderry Food *chefs kiss*. Oh and it wouldn’t be Carnival of Colours without a selection of the finest circus & street theatre acts on the planet!

CARNIVAL OFCOLOURS 2023

BROUGHT TO YOUBYINYOURSPACECIRCUS

So what have we got lined up for you this year? Well…

We’re also bringing back the fabulous pocketsized festival-within-a-festival PARK VIBES in The Peace Garden, so pack your festy clothes (and maybe even a picnic!?) and join us to try some circus skills or check out the fabulous talents at the Future Youth stage! And it wouldn’t be a circus, arts and music festival without the MUSIC! Rock & roll legends at The Nerve Centre will be throwing out major tunes at The Hidden Pavilion (behind The Guildhall) with the best local musicians and bands programmed throughout the day!!

TREATS WE HAVE FOR

We are back again with the best Circus, Arts & Music festival for its age in Derry. And it’s officially our SWEET SIXTEENTH! (OMG, how cute!)

We are taking over the city streets again, but this time the festival will take place smack-bang at the start of the summer hollybobs on the 1st & 2nd July because we have some other exciting treats to bring you in August (keep your eyes peeled later in the programme!).

As we are 10 years on from Derry’s City of Culture year (can you believe it!?) we wanted to bring you an amazing programme to celebrate art, culture and the incredible talents our city has to offer!

First up is the incredible Simple Cypher with their combination of cyr wheel, juggling & hip hop (whaaat!?). We’ve also got the outrageously talented Simon Llewellyn - love circus and mad skills? Love football? Well then Simon is your man! Next up, the brilliant Mc Fois will bring his bewitching charm to the city centre! And we also have the incredible Doris & Mabel’s Book Club taking to the sky with aerial, acrobatics and bucketloads of silliness! And back by popular demand… Frankie Magilligan will be here to spoil you with his hilarious antics and swoon-worthy juggling skills! And as if that wasn’t enough, our own incredible local artists will be taking over the town with their larger (and madder) than life walkabout and roaming performances.

And last, but certainly not least… we have a special wee treat for all you adults out there! On Saturday 1st July, The Curious Cabaret is BACK for one night only at The Nerve Centre. Expect comedy, music and circus wows (along with a few cheeky wee beers at The Nerve’s bar if you’re that way inclined).

So, get the diary out now and mark 1st & 2nd July - BEST DAYS EVER! And join us for Carnival of Colours 2023!!

P.S. Please share your Carnival pics, selfies, etc with us on the interweb! We pure love the craic.

Amami is, simply… a love story.

Amelio Pelò has a bewitching charm and muscles of steel but… he is a lonely man *awwww*. Like every lonely person, all he needs is love!

His flirting techniques are amazing, hilarious, touching and, well… a little pathetic (sorry Amelio). Amelio will use his amazing hat juggling, balancing, ballet attempting skills to woo the audience… or at least he’ll try!

Love circus and mad skills? Love football? Love incredibly charming and talented performers? Well then you are in for a treat! Simon’s unique powers of physical dexterity (and stupidity) will transform the Carnival of Colours into his very own vaudevillian circus! Witness footballs tossed high into the air, spun delicately on his fingers and bounced precisely around the entire body (easy peasy, right!? WRONG!).

Medals will be presented, trophies awarded and confetti will fly! You may even get the chance to become the true champion…

We are SUPER excited to be bringing SIMPLE CYPHER to Carnival of Colours 2023 with their incredible combination of Cyr wheel, juggling and hip hop!

Brace yourself for the explosive tricks and artful dexterity of Simple Cypher’s newest outdoor production Roll Play. Three performers blur the boundaries between hip hop and circus, using intricate moves and virtuosic agility to give a captivating, cheeky and effortlessly cool performance!

Doris & MabEL’s BOOK CLUB Roll Play

Saturday 1.15pm & 3.45pm @ Guildhall Square

Sunday 1.15pm & 2.45pm @ Guildhall Square

Doris and Mabel are “women of a certain age”, Doris has style for miles, or thinks she does…and Mabel…well, Mabel may very well get dressed in the dark in a house with no mirrors.

At first glance they appear to have little in common, but when Doris started a book club 45 years ago, and Mabel was the only person who showed up for the canapés - they discovered their mutual love of books!

Saturday 2pm & 4.30pm @ Guildhall Square

Sunday 2pm, 3.30pm @ Guildhall Square

They got so lost in their world of books, that it never seemed necessary to invite anyone else. And now, you lucky ducks will get the chance to peek inside Doris & Mabel’s very exclusive Bookclub! Expect acrobatics, aerial rope, silks, trapeze and silliness… smack, bang in Derry City Centre!

Back by popular demand... It’s our favourite Frankie!

Be prepared to be dazzled by Frankie Magilligan’s comedy juggling show! With his incredible smile and impeccable fashion sense, Frankie will leave you in stitches with his hilarious antics and incredible juggling skills. And if that wasn’t enough, he’ll be performing on a stunning gold unicycle (we’ve heard he’s got an even bigger one than last year!)

If you’re looking for non-stop laughter and jaw-dropping entertainment, look no further than Frankie Magilligan’s comedy juggling show.

PARKVIBES

FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS

Carnival of Colours would simply not be possible without the support that our funders, sponsors, volunteers, artists and audiences provide. A special mention must go to our principal funders, Derry City and Strabane District Council, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, both of whom offer more than just the hard cash! We would also like to thank our accommodation partner Holiday Inn Express and all our Fab Food Friends and sponsors, who continue to feed and water our international artists and show them the hospitality that DerryLondonderry is famous for!

We just love local arts organisations supporting local artists! Thank you, thank you, thank you all!

Please don’t forget that Carnival of Colours relies on the generosity of our audience. We work hard to keep the event free to make sure nobody is excluded, but we do ask that if you can afford it, you give a LITTLE... and if you can REALLY afford it, that you give a LOT. Every penny we receive goes straight back into spreading happiness, creativity and craic at Carnival of Colours and helps to ensure the next year’s festival can happen! So please dig deep, pull out a note, fold her up and pop her in one of our buckets! Or scan the QR code to give in just a few seconds! Support our event

QUIET SPACE

This year, the Tower Museum has very kindly offered to provide a quiet area in their Education Space. This will be ideal for anyone who is feeling a little overwhelmed by all the Carnival mayhem to take a peaceful break. This will be available from 1-6pm both days.

WET WEATHER

Cross your fingers, cross your toes and stick the Child of Prague in the front yard...but JUST IN CASE of bad weather we will be moving the circus shows to the Nerve Centre; We will have volunteers on hand at each pitch to direct you, and will update show times on our Facebook page should we need to move the festival indoors!

PARKING

We recommend that you cycle, walk or get the bus into town...but if you are coming to the festival by car, you are advised to use the following car parks:

• Ebrington • Victoria Market • Foyleside

• Quayside • William Street • Foyle Street

• Bishop Street

All of which have spaces for Blue Badge holders.

PEE BREAKS

There are plenty of toilets available around the City Centre including at the two main shopping Centres; Foyleside and Quayside, inside the Guildhall, the Tower Museum, as well as numerous cafes and restaurants (if you’re grabbing a bite to eat / drink).

Foyleside also has a sensory room and changing space, should you need it.

SPECIAL THANKS

Where to start? From the top…

This Festival would not be possible without the hours of dedication, commitment and occasional tantrums from the team at Carnival HQ...it’s much more than a job to us and we really do go above and beyond to make this event so special! Also a shout out to our families who put up with a lot and provide support and care packages at this time of the year (and always if we’re honest)!!

We’d like to thank our incredibly supportive and proactive Board of Directors...Christina Crouch, Stephen Kelly, Eavan King, Max Beer and Ross Parkhill.

Our crew, our safety team, our incredibly talented artists, our wonderful Circus School kids and their families, our volunteers, our partner organisations… and YOU our audience...
