These trails are rated as intermediate but are suitable for most riders. It takes about two hours to complete the full 12km loop.
If you didn’t bring your own wheels, drop by the Visitor Information Centre in George Street to hire a mountain bike. It’s free to hire – just call ahead on 1800 650 712 to make sure bikes are available.

Peppin Heritage Centre
The Peppin Heritage Centre was Deniliquin’s first public school, built in 1861. A survey conducted at the time revealed that only 138 of the 613 children living in the area attended school. The original schoolhouse was demolished and replaced by a larger building in 1879. Due to continued growth, it was extended in 1899 and 1905, and continued to operate until 1972 when it finally closed its doors.
Today, the building still includes a historical classroom, in addition to a museum, regular exhibitions in the gallery and gardens and the Visitor Information Centre with souvenirs and local produce galore.
The museum section is currently undergoing an exciting upgrade with expected re-opening in early 2026.

Long Paddock Touring Route
The Long Paddock touring route trip follows the historic Cobb stock route, from fascinating Echuca Moama on the Murray River to iconic country towns. The drive features public artworks and information boards along the way, bringing the history of this unique drive to life.
Today the modern Cobb Highway follows part of the great network of stock routes that became known as The Long Paddock – a network of tracks and trails linking stock-breeding areas of inland NSW and Queensland with emerging markets in Victoria. It also provided an escape route from drought when the seasons failed.
The Long Paddock is still a working stock route which provides a link to times and landscapes long since altered.
The Long Paddock also passes through some of the most character-filled villages in Australia. These little townships of between 30 and 70 people provide visitors with a glimpse of life in country communities. Make sure you stop and have a cuppa or a beer in Pretty Pine, Wanganella and Booroorban, where you will be welcomed with a smile and can get a real feel for life in the bush.
The Long Paddock is an easy drive and accessible by caravan, car or 4WD.

Deni the “Ute capital of the world”
As the symbolic home of Australia’s iconic ute, Deni has done more than anywhere else to celebrate this wonder of automotive usefulness. We’ve rightfully earned the title of “Ute capital of the world” – and we even have a public art sculpture to prove it!
Reutilise, by award-winning local artist Stuart Taylor, is a life-size Holden ute made from metal objects found on farms in the area around Deniliquin. It’s a homage to utes everywhere, and a celebration of the ingenuity of farmers and regional people across Australia.

Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum
The area’s fascinating past comes to life at the Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum, set within the former police inspector’s residence built in the 1880s. Reflecting the different facets of a lively community, the displays include shearing equipment, police records, historical costumes, newspapers dating back to 1859, and items relating to the history of Deniliquin’s town band, Picnic Races, Red Cross and war veterans.
The museum is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10.00am to 12.00pm, or by appointment. Entry $5. Group tours always welcome. 3 Macauley Street.
Deniliquin Courthouse
The size of the town increased rapidly during the mid 19th century due to the gold rush and movement of cattle through the area. The Court House was then built to accommodate, designed in a Neoclassical form of a Roman Temple and set on 5 acres in the centre of town.
In November 1886 the Sheriff travelled to Deniliquin from Sydney to take possession of the new building. The Court House has operated continuously since then to the present day. It is located on the corner of Poictiers and Wellington Streets. Visitors can be shown the beautiful building and told of its intriguing history and tales by the Sheriff on days when court is not in session. This majestic building also lends its gardens to wedding and special events.

Deniliquin Airport
Is the proud home of permanent displays commemorating the No.7 Service Flying Training School (No7 SFTS) which was a RAAF flying training school in Deniliquin during the Second World War. The displays honour all men and women who served at the school and is a memorial to the 50 young men who were killed during training. There is also a dedicated RAAF display at the Peppin Heritage Centre.
The Deniliquin airport underwent a significant upgrade in 2023 and now includes an LED illuminated and resealed 1219 metre runway. There is a comfortable terminal building with historical displays, and a large, sealed GA aircraft parking area with facilities to tie aircraft down.
Wettenhall Air Services offer charter flights to and from the region. Murray Darling Scenic Flights offer bespoke flight experiences in and around the region.
Edward River Library
Set opposite the town’s picturesque gardens, the Edward River Library offers visitors everything to learn and engage in a light and lovely space. Free Wi-Fi, computers, photocopier and printing facilities are available. Regular children’s activities such as story time, author visits and memorable school holiday programs are part of the annual calendar for community member and visitors to town. Open 10am-5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-12pm Saturdays.
Engineering marvels
Around Deni, you’ll find a couple of awe-inspiring feats of rural engineering. The Lawson Syphon, approximately five kilometres from town, diverts the canal under the river to deliver water to the agricultural areas west of Deniliquin. These syphons were the catalyst for a farming boom. Around 25 kilometres north of Deni is Stevens Weir, which was built in 1938 to guarantee permanent town water supplies. There is a lovely picnic area overlooking the weir and the fish ladder, which allows native fish to migrate upstream to spawn.

Mayrung 41 Just out of town
Blighty
The village of Blighty is an easy half-hour drive east towards Finley and Albury. What Blighty lacks in size (the population is somewhere around 400) it more than makes up in community spirit. You won’t find any shops, but it does have a primary school, a pub, a footy ground and netball courts. This is a town rich in family, community and friendliness.
For a taste of local life, stop in for a drink or a hearty meal at the Blighty Hotel – the chicken parma is a specialty. On weekends there’s often a barbecue going in the beer garden, and you might even get roped into a friendly pool competition.
Country football and netball clubs are the glue for many small Aussie towns. On winter Saturdays, join the locals around the oval cheering on the mighty Redeyes. Every second Saturday features a home game at Blighty.
Booroorban
Once a stop on the fabled Cobb & Co run between Deniliquin and Hay, Booroorban features a small camping ground and caravan park at the pub. Here you can enjoy a meal, a drink and a chat with the locals in the lovely peppercorn treeshaded beer garden – opening hours are limited so best to call ahead.
The main bar pays homage to the Headless Horseman, also commemorated in a sculpture out at the Black Swamp rest area, who was said to roam these parts in the 1850s.
The area features the Burraburoon Farm Stay experience, a working sheep station offering unique variety of accommodation, including a converted train carriage.
Drive or fly into North Bundy for a truly unique Australian experience, a little over an hour from Deni’s CBD. This 30,000 acre working sheep station offers farmstay experiences to amaze.
The rustic-looking and charming Booroorban Community Hall is available for hire and hosts the annual Camp Oven Cook-off which has grown in popularity and welcomes locals and visitors.

Conargo
Conargo was initially part of Benjamin Boyd’s vast pastoral empire, extending from the south, across the Billabong Creek, and taking in more land to the north. Officially gazetted as a town in 1860, Conargo quickly grew to become the passionate pastoral and grazing community it is today.
Only a 25-minute drive northeast of Deniliquin, Conargo village sits on the Billabong Creek (a tributary of the Murrumbidgee) which many claim is the longest creek in Australia.
While the village is small, it services several large sheep stations and merino studs. The merino breed has its origins in the Riverina, and the Interpretive Centre in Conargo tells the story of this critical animal’s influence on the fortunes of not just the region, but the entire nation.
The restored 19th century Drop Log Stables, showing the building process of the time, were part of the old Cadman’s Conargo Inn that served as a meal break for travellers on the old Cobb & Co coach run. The photo opportunities continue just a little further along the road, where a charming bush church from 1914 still stands.
The Billabong Hotel famously known as the Conargo Hotel, reopened in 2022 after a disastrous fire and offers travellers and locals cold drinks and quality meals.
Free camping available at Bill’s Park (RV dump point), adjacent to the tennis courts and along the banks of the Billabong. (3 Camp areas)
Sunset photo opportunities of the expansive plains are located 8-14km north of the village on the Carrathool Road.

Mayrung
With a population hovering somewhere around 150, Mayrung is a tiny village community but a big part of our region’s agricultural life. Irrigation makes grain production possible, and the locals have taken to rice and other grains here with gusto. The landscape changes through the seasons and makes for a lovely scenic drive just 30km from Deni.
Modern Mayrung is a community in the Riverina north-east of Deniliquin with a population of 170. It includes a well-functioning school and active Community Hall built in 1953. Wamba Wamba speakers who still inhabit the district call the distinctive sand hill Murray Pines (Marrung). Now days the Mayrung area is mainly farming with rice, cotton and wheat being grown with the help of irrigation water.
Pretty Pine
Just a short 20-minute drive from Deni is the small community of Pretty Pine.
Here you can visit the Pretty Pine Hotel, a heritage building that was once the final stop on the Cobb & Co route to Deniliquin from Hay. These days, it’s better known for its delicious meals (pizza a specialty), cold drinks and friendly service.
While you’re in town, kids can run free at the football oval, cricket pitch and playground of Pretty Pine Recreation Reserve
If you happen to be in the area in September, don’t miss the famous annual Pretty Pine Father’s Day Expo and Market on the first Sunday of the month. This vibrant community event attracts several thousand visitors every year.
Mayrung Pretty Pine Hotel visitdeni.com 44
Wanganella
Sitting on a picturesque bank of the Billabong Creek, the Wanganella General Store draws visitors from all around for friendly service, cold drinks, gifts and a hearty feed.
Wanganella is probably best known as the birthplace of the Peppin merino sheep breed; a hardy, large sheep that was built for Australia’s climate and conditions. The Peppin Merino is now the most common breed in Australia, and a bronze statue at the front gates of Wanganella Station, just south of the village, commemorates its importance.
The village is around 45 minutes’ drive north of Deniliquin along the flat Hay Plains and makes a special side-trip to see the countryside. Settle in at the General Store and spend the night at the quiet and well cared for Wanganella Creek Camp Park and take in the breathtaking sunsets or big starry night skies.
If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the region’s tracks and waterways – either on foot or by bike – and maybe even find a secluded spot to cast a line and catch a fish or two. Heading north from Deni, take a left at the first dirt road after the Billabong Creek bridge (no sign, no name!) for some beautiful natural picnic spots. As well as fish, this spot is home to several notable bird species.
Local tip!
A true locals’ secret, the area best known as The Common in Wanganella is a hidden away, nature lovers’ haven. Take the first dirt road to the left once crossing the Billabong Creek bridge towards Hay and you’ll wind your way along the creek’s edge through a forest of river gums. You’ll find ample areas to pull up for a peaceful picnic, to cast a line for a yellow or Murray Cod, a bushwalk with your fur family or even a bike ride.
