Local Lore

By The Numbers

Corpus Christi is Latin for “Body of Christ.” The name was given to the settlement by Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda in 1519. It is now home to the largest city on the Texas Coast and is the sixth largest port in the nation.

The USS Lexington naval aircraft carrier is as tall as a 19-story building and as long as three New York City blocks. It’s so large, you could play three football games on its flight deck at the same time.

Corpus Christi has been deemed America’s “birdiest” city, with 357 different species spotted in 2021. The Bayfront Seawall, one of Corpus Christi’s top tourist attractions, was designed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who later became famous for sculpting the iconic Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

Boasting a 400,000-gallon shark pool, the Texas State Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Texas and one of the largest in the United States. Tourism is a significant industry locally, helping attract more than 10 million visitors annually and employing 24,000 hospitality professionals.

In addition to a stunning collection inside, the building of the Art Museum of South Texas is an art piece itself. People come from near and far to capture selfies in front of its iconic pink exterior, a signature trademark of the architect.
