FORWARD THINKERS

JUSTIN AZZARELLA

VP with the Evergreen Association of Western New York, where, among other things, he oversees Buffalo’s Pride Week LGBTQ celebration (see page 32). buffalopridefestival.com

A new generation is reinventing Buffalo as a mecca of arts and culture, while paying homage to its past. We rounded up a few young leaders with Buffalo’s grain elevators – symbols of our proud industrial heritage – as a backdrop.

VBN: A big portion of Pride takes place at Canalside (page 8), which is quickly becoming one of Buffalo’s most popular tourist spots. Tell us about that part of Buffalo. JA: Canalside is a really unique and cool place. It’s the convergence of downtown, the waterfront, a sports arena and historic buildings. I’m an urban planner by education and – to me – there’s something magical about celebrating Pride with 15,000 people at the historic terminus of the Erie Canal surrounded by skyscrapers, cobblestone streets and a gorgeous sunset on Lake Erie.

DUSTIN HERZBERGER

Drummer for The Albrights, a Buffalo indie rock band with plenty of pop hooks and bluesy swagger. thealbrightsband.com VBN: Where are your favorite venues to see other bands play?

KC KRATT

DH: Nietzsche’s (see page 10), as well as the up-and-coming Mr. Goodbar upstairs stage, which is really turning into a great room. I also love going down to Thursday at Canalside (page 8) in the summer – they always have great bands and I love being outside on the water watching music. The Town Ballroom and Larkin Square (page 16) are also favorites.

CORI WOLFF

ALI EAGEN

VBN: Outside of BAS, what are your three favorite other art spaces?

VBN: You specialize in designing high-end clothing for women. But what about the guys? Where should they go to get dressed up?

Executive/Artistic Director of Buffalo Arts Studio, which features 36 artist studios in a former windshield wiper factory. buffaloartsstudio.org

CW: Tough question! The best thing about Buffalo is the diversity and caliber of programming of its galleries, theaters and alternative spaces. The venues I tend to frequent most often are Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Burchfield Penney Art Center (see page 27) and 464 Gallery.

Owner and designer at Anatomy, a custom clothing maker located in the Hotel @ The Lafayette. madebyanatomy.com

AE: For the boys, I urge them to visit O’Connell’s on Main Street in North Buffalo. They have such a classic selection of the best fitted suiting and separates with a fresh twist.

Founder and editor of BuffaloRising.com, which covers Buffalo’s rebirth, locally-owned businesses and grassroots projects.

SHANE DEPREE

Founder of Verve Dance Studio, where he teaches B-boying, the dance element of Hip Hop culture. vervedancestudio.com VBN: We’re sure that all that dancing can make you work up an appetite – where do you go to fill up? SD: When I’m hungry I love to go grab some Caribbean food at Doctor Bird’s Caribbean Rasta-Rant. I also love Amy’s Place! The lentil berry sandwich is amazing.

VBN: What is your favorite building or place in Buffalo? Why? NN: I love Five Points Bakery (see page 6). It’s where I hatch plots, meet with writers, daydream and envision what Buffalo will be like the following day, week, year... I can’t help but be excited about what is happening here, and inspirational cafés like Five Points Bakery are the building blocks of our neighborhoods.

Waterfront Rebirth

Spirit of Buffalo

Buffalo’s position as the western terminus of the Erie Canal made it one of the country’s most important transportation, milling and heavy industry centers in the country in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the Canalside district pays homage to that history, while offering some 750 events, ranging from outdoor yoga to crafts for kids to free Thursday at Canalside concerts by national rock acts. Canalside also has WWII warships at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park (America’s largest inland naval park); casual dining and great beers at the Liberty Hound and grub off the grill at Clinton’s Dish; rentals from BFLO Harbor Kayak (see page 28); and boat excursions with the Queen City Ferry, Spirit of Buffalo, Buffalo Harbor Cruises, the moondanceCat and Seven Seas Sailing. visitbuffaloniagara.com/canalside

ANTIQUE WORLD

HAVE A LITTLE FAITH If you aren’t yet fully in awe when you walk through the gilded Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica in Lackawanna, head down to the basement. There, you’ll find the Father Baker Museum, which tells the remarkable story of the care, compassion and charity of church founder Monsignor Nelson Baker, who was recently declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI. ourladyofvictory.org

ANGEL ART LTD.

Buffalo was one of the wealthiest cities in America at the turn of the 20th century and the artifacts of that era can be found in antique shops around the region, but the big dog is Antique World. Whether you’re looking for exquisitely fashioned furniture, rare dolls, fine art or some 1950s kitsch, this huge facility in Clarence, with vendors filling tens of thousands of square feet, is bound to have it. Just down the street, there’s the perfect pairing for a day of antique hunting: a stay or traditional afternoon tea at the Asa Ransom House, a quaint B&B built in 1853.

Two miles east of downtown Buffalo, Larkin Square burst on the scene in 2012 in a big, colorful, fun and exciting way – and they haven’t looked back. At lunchtime, play a little pickleball (a cross between tennis and pingpong), show off your hula-hooping skills, order a gourmet pizza from a converted gas station 16 (appropriately named the Filling Station), pick up a panini from Square 1 Sandwiches (housed in a former Airstream trailer) or just relax in one of the eclectic outdoor chairs spread throughout the square. 200 YEARS OF PEACE

Empire Sandy

VISITBUFFALONIAGARA.COM

Today, we love our Canadian neighbors to the north. 200 years ago? Not so much. During the War of 1812, American and British forces fought a series of battles on both sides of the border, as well as on the Great Lakes. In commemoration of the Battle of Lake Erie, Buffalo’s Canalside district will welcome some impressive tall ships in 2013 – from Aug. 5 to 7, the threemasted schooner Empire Sandy will pull into harbor, followed by the Lynx and the Peacemaker from Sept. 13 to 15.

NIAGARA 1812 LEGACY COUNCIL

To mark the bicentennial of the capture of Old Fort Niagara by British troops, throngs of reenactors will descend on Old Fort Niagara in Lewiston on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2013 for a War of 1812 Encampment. And for an overview of the fighting that took place in our region and a chance to view many a musket and saber, head to the Buffalo History Museum for their By Fire & Sword exhibit, opening Sept. 12, 2013. visitbuffaloniagara.com/1812

AN ARTS & CRAFTS MECCA Founded by Elbert Hubbard at the turn of the 20th century, the Roycroft Campus became America’s largest and most successful community in the Arts & Crafts movement, which emphasized making goods by hand, as a reaction to industrialization and mass production. In recent years, a group of fine craftsmen have revived the Roycroft tradition – their work is identified by the “Roycroft Renaissance” double-R mark – and the campus has been restored to feature fine dining and mission style-decorated accommodations at the Roycroft Inn, unique handmade gifts at the Copper Shop Gallery and master artisan-taught classes on everything from glass blowing to woodworking at the newly rebuilt Power House.

East Aurora has roots as a magnet for artists and thinkers. It remains that to this day, but this village, located 20 minutes from downtown Buffalo, has equal pull for those seeking retail therapy, great dining and history.

Well-Documented It may have only been a short while that Samuel Clemens – AKA Mark Twain – made his home in Buffalo (1869 to 1871), but a major piece of his legacy resides in Buffalo today. You can view the original manuscript of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in Twain’s own hand at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s downtown Central Library. Not to be outdone, the State University of New York at Buffalo’s Poetry Collection, located in Capen Hall on their North Campus in Amherst, stakes claim to North America’s largest assemblage of 20th century first edition poetry. Anchoring the collection is the definitive library of James Joyce’s work, including some 10,000 pages of the writer’s manuscripts.

And you know that feeling when you’re engulfed in a great book and it feels like the author is right there, talking directly to you? Well, Just Buffalo Literary Center’s Babel author speaker series makes that experience come to life. They’ll bring Richard Blanco to town on Oct. 22, 2013, Amy Tan on Nov. 22, 2013 and Abraham Verghese on April 8, 2014. Need more? Just Buffalo also maintains a handy calendar of literary events around Buffalo – find it at justbuffalo.org. visitbuffaloniagara.com/literary

Watercolorist Charles Burchfield may not have been born in Buffalo, but we were happy to adopt him at age 28. Perhaps best known for his abstract depictions of nature, he also captured scenes from Buffalo’s urban landscape, like this one, looking north on Washington Street at Mohawk Street. LEAF IT TO LEAH Leah Mueller’s day job is with Visit Buffalo Niagara, but she also is I Love New York’s official fall foliage tracker for Erie County, which makes her a pretty colorful character. VBN: Do you have a favorite species of tree in the fall? LM: In my opinion, you can’t beat the bright colors on maples.

VBN: There’s a fine line between when leaves are near peak and fully there. How do you make that call? LM: I report a week in advance which makes things a little tricky. I am constantly evaluating neighborhoods and areas while out driving to try and establish the true average for all of Buffalo. I use percentages when I report, so that gives me a little cushion for interpretation.

VBN: How do you register your reports? Do they give you like your own bat phone or something? LM: Ha. A bat phone would be awesome. Each week, I email a report to I Love New York’s fall foliage team and then they update the foliage map at iloveny.com. VBN: Besides peeping leaves, what are some of your other favorite fall activities? LM: Buffalo has such great weather here in the fall and I love to go hiking and geocaching with my family. I try to hit up the farmers markets and u-pick farms for apples and pumpkins and visit a couple of events at Canalside – the views on Lake Erie are incredible!

VBN: What are your top three places to take in the autumn colors? LM: Hmm…this is hard because we have so many beautiful areas nearby. I’d say Buffalo’s Delaware Park (where this photo was taken), nearby Letchworth State Park and the Zoar Valley, south of the city.

Regardless of the season, a drive along one of the routes of the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway will feature breathtaking views, with rolling hills, valleys and farm fields.

TAKE TO THE SLOPES

Skiing, snowboarding, tubing. . . Kissing Bridge and its neighboring Colden Tubing Company have you covered for all things downhill.

PARK IT!

VISITBUFFALONIAGARA.COM

Never been down a toboggan chute? It’s like a cross between a rollercoaster and sledding. Give this retro winter activity a try at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, which is also home to a very popular disc golf course. Sprague Brook Park in Glenwood features great cross-country skiing and camping, Emery Park in South Wales has free downhill skiing and Woodlawn Beach in Blasdell is perfect for a dip in Lake Erie.

ART, IN ALL FORMS

With visual arts, music, theater, cinema and dance, the growing Springville Center for the Arts has become a hotbed for creativity.

GREAT SHAKES

A smooth, creamy, ice-cold milkshake has staying power, apparently. These summertime joints have been serving Southtowners for decades: Tony’s in Blasdell, Taffy’s in Orchard Park, George’s in Boston and Connors in Angola.

CLASS (IV) IS IN SESSION

FAIR & SQUARE

Travel down Cattaraugus Creek, with both calm water and some brisk rapids, on an excursion with the Zoar Valley Canoe and Rafting Company or Catt Rafting Adventures. Find them both in Gowanda.

With more than a million visitors and 275 acres of animals, games, rides, events and fried food, the Erie County Fair (Aug. 7 to 18, 2013 in Hamburg) is America’s third largest county fair.

CARVE OUT SOME FAMILY TIME

Stroll through the quaint Village of Hamburg and it seems like there’s a restaurant every few steps. We recommend the eggplant parm at Tina’s, the seared scallops at the Buffalo Street Grill, the roasted red pepper bisque at Mason’s Grille 52, wings at Mammoser’s and, for an upscale meal on a budget, the prix fixe menu at Daniel’s.

This fall, pick the perfect pumpkin at Pumpkinville in Great Valley, where they also have hay rides, apple cider pressing and a corn maze.

GET A LITTLE CORNY

The small community of Eden is an agricultural powerhouse – you can tell by the welcoming farm stands that dot Route 62 – and, each year, the town’s flagship crop is celebrated during the Eden Corn Fest (Aug. 1 to 4, 2013). Be sure to catch the Sunday parade, where floats are known to toss some unusual items to the crowd – like ice cream sandwiches and, yes, ears of corn.

GENTLEMEN, START YOUR ENGINES!

The weekly NASCAR action at the Holland Speedway is always a roaring good time, but our guilty pleasure is the carnage of the Crash-o-Rama nights (June 8 & Sept. 14, 2013), featuring fullsized school bus smash-ups.

PICK UP AN INSTRUMENT

Tour the Eden Kazoo Museum, Factory & Boutique – the only remaining metal kazoo factory in the U.S. – and then make your own kazoo for $2.99.

IRISH HERITAGE, ON PARADE St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday that Buffalo takes seriously – so seriously that the city has not one, but two, parades. On March 15, head to the “Old Neighborhood” St. Patrick’s Day Parade. With ironworkers, family clans, Irish dancers and bagpipers weaving their way through the historically Irish First Ward neighborhood, this is a lively working man’s parade. The larger of the two parades takes place the next day, March 16. FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

KC KRATT

IRON (STOMACH) MAN Each year, one of the highlights of the National Buffalo Wing Festival is the chicken wing eating contest. In 2012, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut set a new world record, downing 191 O IN wings in AR M D 12 minutes – VI DA which, according to our calculations, works out to a wing every four seconds. We had to ask him about this.

SOME TASTE-Y TIPS 34

The Taste of Buffalo turns the big 3-0 this year and it certainly has grown up – today, it is America’s largest two-day food festival. Here are some tips for tackling this culinary behemoth:

1

VISITBUFFALONIAGARA.COM

STRATEGIZE Before you head to the Taste, go to tasteofbuffalo.com and download their map, which features a list of restaurants, where they’re located, what they’re serving and how many tickets each item requires. Circle your faves, tally up how many tickets you need to buy and then work your way through methodically.

2

STAY HYDRATED Between being exposed to the hot July sun, walking on asphalt and consuming plenty of salty and spicy foods, you’re going to need something to drink. Water, soda, beer and wine are available at the festival.

3

LOOK FOR THE WINNERS Each year, a panel of judges bestows awards in categories ranging from “Best Meat Item” (um, yes!) to “Best Comfort Food” (yes, again!). These are always good bets. The 2013 Taste of Buffalo is July 13 & 14 tasteofbuffalo.com

VBN: First, the basics: hot, medium or mild? JC: If I’m eating for enjoyment, hot or medium with blue cheese. Mild wings during a contest. In competition, I am taking in so many wings, even the spice from mild wings starts to take a toll. VBN: What shape of wing is faster to eat – the bat or the flat? Any tips for handling each kind? JC: With a good technique, the two bone flats are a lot faster than the bats. Also, there is less cartilage on the flats, so they taste better. Everybody has their own way of eating wings, and there is no wrong way. The only way to get better is to eat more. VBN: When you’re hanging out with friends, do they think twice about ordering wings? JC: My friends know I don’t always eat like a mad man, so they don’t really worry when ordering wings to share. They do become concerned when the pitchers of beer start vanishing.

KC KRATT

VBN: 191 wings means a lot of sauce…and a lot of mess. How do you clean up afterward? A boatload of wet naps? Fire hose? JC: Usually, I congratulate all the other eaters with a pat on the back. They hardly ever notice I am using them as a towel. The 2013 National Buffalo Wing Festival is Aug. 31 & Sept. 1 buffalowing.com

FLOWER POWER Think of it as a six-week-long garden party. The fourth annual National Garden Festival runs June 21 to Aug. 4, 2013 and features some 1,000 gardens spread across 15 weekend garden walks (including America’s largest – Garden Walk Buffalo), Thursday and Friday Open Gardens and a series of motorcoach tours. This floral fest also includes workshops, speakers and a Buffalo-Style Garden Art Sale. Get all the dirt at nationalgardenfestival.com.

How can you take a whirlwind trip to India, Burma, China, Ethiopia and Peru in just 30 minutes? By making a stop at the West Side Bazaar on Grant Street in Buffalo, where immigrants from around the world sell colorful wares and traditional foods from their home countries. Less than a half mile up Grant, browse the aisles of imported foods at Guercio & Sons, which serves as a produce wholesaler to some of Buffalo’s finest restaurants, or pick up a used book at West Side Stories to read with an omelette and coffee from Sweet_ness 7.
