GETTING HERE Nestled in northeast South Dakota at the intersection of Interstate 29 and Highway 14, Brookings is within a day’s drive of major Midwest cities. We’re an hour north of Sioux Falls, 2.5 hours south of Fargo, 3.5 hours from Minneapolis or Omaha, and 5.5 hours east of Rapid City.

FLYING IN? Many visitors fly in to the Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) while others like the smaller feel of the Watertown Regional Airport (ATY). Either option gets you to Brookings in just under an hour.

THE LEGACY OF OL’ WOODEN LEGS

I

t’s not common to hear his full name these days, but Wilmot Wood Brookings left his mark on South Dakota. He’s the reason Brookings County, the city of Brookings and the town of Wilmot have their names. Wilmot Brookings was a pioneer whose grit, ambition and determination helped shape the early Dakota Territory.

Falls and Yankton. By the time he was rescued, both legs had frozen beyond saving. He lived the rest of his life with wooden prosthetics, a physical hardship he managed to turn into another part of his legend.

Today, Brookings stands as more than a city name.

It’s a tribute to a man whose life was defined by resilience, vision and an unshakable pioneer spirit, even on wooden legs.

Born in Maine in 1830, Brookings was drawn westward for a life of new opportunities like many ambitious young Americans of his era. He settled in the Dakota Territory, where he made his mark as a lawyer and an early land developer.

He staked claims in what would become Sioux Falls and Yankton, and soon emerged as an influential political figure in the region.

Brookings was appointed as a Dakota Territorial Supreme Court judge and as district attorney in the Yankton area. The Dakota Territorial Legislature cemented his legacy by naming the two cities and county after him.

His political service isn’t what earned him a place as a local legend. Brookings is perhaps best remembered for the harrowing winter journey which gave rise to his unforgettable nickname: “Ol’ Wooden Legs.”

During a frigid expedition in search of land, Brookings and a group of companions were caught in a severe winter storm. As the story goes, he fell into the icy waters of Split Rock Creek between present-day Sioux 5

1. Kuchen A traditional German dessert made from a sweet dough crust. Kuchen is filled with custard and topped with fresh fruit. Visitors can find this dessert on the SDSU campus at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum.

2. Milk The state drink appears in milkshakes, cheese and ice cream at the SDSU Dairy Bar. Dedicated to crafting a wide assortment of ice cream flavors, this iconic spot is where Cookies and Cream was first created.

3. Ring-necked Pheasant This bird can be spotted in its natural habitat at the Dakota Nature Park. Those looking to taste pheasant can enjoy the signature Pheasant on the Green salad at Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge.

4. Pasque South Dakota’s state flower blooms in early spring at McCrory Gardens. Pasque is also the name of a home decor shop in Downtown Brookings.

5. Walleye Anglers can head to Lake Campbell, just outside of Brookings, where windy days provide the perfect conditions for reeling in South Dakota’s state fish.

ucked quietly into the heart of Downtown Brookings, seven metal plaques invite visitors to discover poetry and honor the poets laureate of South Dakota. Located along Main Avenue, the short walk transforms everyday sidewalks into an outdoor literary gallery. Beginning at the post office and looping back near Nick’s Hamburger Shop, every plaque invites a guest to pause and reflect with the writings.

GAME ON! A VISITOR’S GUIDE TO SDSU TAILGATING

rookings ignites with excitement as nearly 20,000 fans gather for each home SDSU Jackrabbit football game.

Many get an early start by enjoying pregame festivities surrounding Dana J Dykhouse Stadium.

Tailgating starts five hours before kickoff, giving visitors plenty of time to set up their canopy tents, grill delicious food and get pumped up to cheer on the Jackrabbits.

While some tailgate areas are reserved, general admission spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis in the parking lot east of The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. A quick check of the SDSU Campus map can give visitors an overview of tailgating opportunities.

All visitors can walk through the entire tailgating area and join in on bean bag toss, hook-and-ring, or play catch with a football. The SDSU Alumni and Foundation

tent is handy for those who want the experience but don’t have the supplies.

The tent, officially called the First Bank & Trust Alumni Rabbit Den, is located on the southwest side of the stadium and offers complimentary food and beverages.

Freewill donations help offset their costs.

Ninety minutes before kickoff, the excitement builds as the SDSU Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band performs in the tailgating area. Their performance signals it’s time to head to the stadium.

From the first whistle to the final buzzer, fans are part of the action, yelling out their best “Wooo” on first-downs (IYKYK), and singing along to “Ring the Bells” and “The Yellow and Blue” after touchdowns.

At the end of the game, the stadium lights dim, but energy reignites as fans move to Downtown Brookings. Win or lose, the traditions and community spirit keep fans coming back all season long.

he Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center stands as a limitless beacon of creativity, power and performance for the Brookings community and art enthusiasts from around the region.

Visitors to The Oscar experience a space where talent thrives and inspiration flows.

The facility is used for performances by the SDSU School of Performing Arts, recitals for Brookings schools, Brookings Community Theatre, Prairie Repertory Theatre and Woodbine Productions. The Oscar is also home to the SDSU Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band.

The building is named for Oscar Larson, founder of Larson Storm Doors in recognition of his family’s generous contribution to the community. The original space opened in 2002. In 2019, the facility underwent a major renovation, adding several classrooms for the School of Performing Arts, including the Oscar Larson Theatre, Founders Recital Hall and Dance Studio.

Forever 605 encourages visitors to enjoy a scenic walk around McCrory Gardens or the Dakota Nature Park, taking in the smells and sounds with respect. Being stewards of sustainability means taking a little extra time to pick up trash along the way. egin on the trail to take in Brookings’ fresh air and open spaces. With nearly 24 miles connecting parks, neighborhoods and South Dakota State University, the trails provide an opportunity to explore the community on two wheels.

Brookings, the City-County Government Center and online. Many hotels are steps away from paved trails which link directly to major parks and attractions. For those without bikes, rentals are available at SDSU’s Miller Wellness Center and at the Larson Nature Center.

he Old Sanctuary, located off Fourth Street, is a historic place to book an event to celebrate and gather with friends and family. It was once a church, built in 1952, then later renovated and transformed into a beautiful venue while keeping its original charm and character.

RUSTIC CHARM

Escape to the beautiful rolling prairie just outside Brookings at Schade Vineyard & Winery. This original South Dakota winery specializes in handcrafted wines made from local fruits. Visitors can enjoy a tasting flight, relax with a glass of wine, cheese, and charcuterie while taking in the vineyard views.

Experience the rustic charm of Good Roots Farm & Garden, a third-generation family farm just minutes north of town. The beautifully restored 98-year old barn is the main attraction, along with serene gardens.

Every Sunday from early June to midOctober, the farm welcomes the public for its famous wood-fired pizza nights, serving handcrafted, seasonal pizzas with ingredients often grown right on the property. Visitors can relax picnic-style on the grounds, enjoy live music, visit the farm animals, and explore the rustic, peaceful setting.

LITTLE TOWN ON THE PRAIRIE We love the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Brookings sits right in the middle of the two most famous towns from her books.

If your timing is right, you can experience live prairie performances on select weekends in July that bring Laura’s stories to life.

Laura’s Little Town of De Smet, South Dakota is just a short drive to the west.

Spend a full day immersed in the pioneer way of life. Imagine walking through the original home Pa built for the Ingalls family, and seeing the schoolhouse where Laura and Carrie studied. From there you can enjoy hands-on history, twisting hay, grinding wheat and driving a horse-drawn covered wagon at the Ingalls Homestead.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. If you want to add another Ingalls chapter to your trip, Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the setting for On the Banks of Plum Creek, is just a short, easy drive in the other direction from Brookings. With Brookings as your base, you can easily see both historic towns without checking out of your hotel.

THE PRAIRIE AS A CANVAS With our breathtaking sunsets and beautiful open spaces, our area is the setting of an incredible art scene. Start your day inspired by Harvey Dunn’s stunning prairie paintings at the South Dakota Art Museum. After a quick lunch, take a short drive north to the Redlin Art Center in Watertown. Terry Redlin’s masterful use of light and idyllic scenes make you want to climb inside the painting. Return to Brookings for dinner and an evening of live theater or music.

Visit Brookings partnered with Dr. Marina Hendricks and the Public Relations Writing Class (School of Communications & Journalism) at South Dakota State University to create the featured stories in this guide. Many thanks to the students for their contributions.

BEN ANDERSON Ben Anderson, is a public relations major from Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He enjoys broadcasting play-by-play of Jackrabbit Athletics for Collegian Media, SDSU’s independent student press organization. Additionally, Ben serves in the National Guard as an artilleryman and unit public affairs representative.

After graduating, he aspires to work in sports marketing and communications.

LINDSEY BACHMAN Lindsey Bachman studies advertising and works as a student engagement officer at the Jackrabbit Philanthropy Center. From Grand Meadow, Minnesota, she is a marketing and promotions intern with Jackrabbit Athletics and a community assistant on campus. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and relaxing with family and friends.

RYLEY BICE Ryley Bice studies agricultural communication and animal science. From Miles City, Montana, she grew up raising different crops for her family’s feedlot operation. Ryley has media and photography experience in the livestock industry. After graduation, she intends to work independently or for an agricultural marketing agency in South Dakota.

KIAH BOETEL Kiah Boetel is studying public relations with a minor in digital and social media.

Originally from Harrisburg, South Dakota, she is a member of the Jackrabbit women’s track and field team. Outside of school and athletics, Kiah runs a successful photography business, KBoet Photo and Film.

RYAN BRANIFF Ryan Braniff studies agricultural communication. From Tekamah, Nebraska, she grew up on a row crop farm and a small cow-calf operation. She has experience working in marketing and graphic design for agricultural companies. She operates Irish Hill Photography, capturing seniors, couples, families and the agriculture industry.

EMMA BROWN Emma Brown studies public relations with a minor in digital and social media.

She interned with Experience Sioux Falls, where she gained professional skills in public relations. From Sioux Falls, South Dakota, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, along with reading and cooking.

CAMILLE BUUS Camille Buus is an advertising major with minors in digital and social media, design studies, marketing and public relations. As a social media assistant for the College of Education and Human Sciences, she helped raise $180,000 for the college’s 2025 One Day for STATE campaign.

CLAUDIA CAMPBELL Claudia Campbell is a 2025 fall graduate with an associate degree in general studies. Her studies focused on public relations, journalism and event and facilities administration. She plans to pursue a career in hospitality. From Arlington, South Dakota, she values her faith and her family above all else.

CALLIE CONNELL Callie Connell is a public relations major with a digital and social media minor from Rapid City, South Dakota. Experience in food service and healthcare gave her teamwork and communication skills. Inspired by family, Callie enjoys crocheting, drawing, fashion design, photography and film. She plans to build a creative career.

BROOKE DECKERT Brooke Deckert majors in public relations and communications with minors in health communication and advertising. She has public relations experience, having completed an internship with Brookings Health System. From Tea, South Dakota, she stays busy spending time with friends and family as well as pursuing her hobbies.

GABRIELLA DODWAY Gabriella Dodway, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, majors in journalism with minors in religion and history. She is involved with Jackrabbits Forensics, SDSU’s speech and debate team, as well as the American Sign Language Club.

Gabriella has experience as a newspaper reporter for another university.

KEEGAN FLANIGAN Keegan Flanigan is an ambitious advertising student who enjoys creating impactful stories and connecting with others. He spends his free time golfing, exploring the outdoors with friends and relaxing with his dog, Jo. Keegan values community and sees Brookings as the ideal place to learn, grow and share ideas.

KAYLA FREEBURG Kayla Freeburg studies agricultural communications with a minor in advertising.

She has gained experience in agriculture and public relations through her internship. She is from Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling and watching sports.

AVERI JOHANNSEN Averi Johannsen studies advertising with four minors. From Tea, South Dakota, she fills her time on campus by guiding tours, creating social content for Miller Wellness Center and assisting athletics with game-day promotions. Outside class, she enjoys staying active, cooking and spending time with friends.

CODY MOUNCE Cody Mounce studied advertising with an associates degree in marketing. From Luverne, Minnesota, he is originally from Louisiana and plans to pursue a career in sports marketing or digital marketing after college. Cody enjoys watching sports, especially the Louisiana State University Tigers and the New Orleans Saints.

CAMDEN OSBORN Camden Osborn is majoring in advertising and minoring in graphic design.

Born and raised in Redfield, South Dakota, he values community, athletics, enthusiasm and having fun whenever possible. Camden plans to work in sports marketing or in an in-house marketing role for a company in the future.

MADELINE PETERSEN Madeline Petersen is an advertising major with a minor in graphic design. A multisport athlete from Worthington, Minnesota, she gained social media experience by creating game-day content. Madeline enjoys designing, editing, shooting photos and videos and creating social media content. Outside of class, she can be found walking or shopping.

MAYCEE THEEDE Maycee Theede is majoring in public relations with minors in marketing and psychology. From Madison, South Dakota, she enjoys digital design, writing and all things journalism. She looks to pursue a career in media relations or social media creation. Outside of class, she enjoys coffee runs and long walks.

LAYNA TUCHTENHAGEN Layna Tuchtenhagen is a public relations major with minors in advertising and marketing. From New London, Minnesota, she is president of the Advertising Club and a social media and writing intern for University Marketing and Communications.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, being with friends and drinking coffee.

ANNIE WITT Annie Witt is a journalism major with minors in public relations and communication studies. She anchors the campus newscast, “The Collegian Report,” and works for “On Call with the Prairie Doc.” Originally from Bristol, South Dakota, Annie plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.
