GO SHOPPING Don’t go home without a piece of Athens. There are several places Uptown where you can find those souvenir gifts that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. See the Shopping section for some suggestions.

FINDING PARKING We suggest parking in the Athens City Parking Garage, which has hundreds of metered parking spots. A change machine is located at its entrance or you may pay using a credit card.

Additionally, how’s your parallel parking skills? Uptown Streets are lined with metered parking spaces.

CELEBRATE TOGETHER Court Street and Union Street are home to dozens of bars, pubs and taverns — some loved by locals, some loved by students, and some loved by us all. Take a break and find your scene in Uptown Athens. See the Nightlife section for some suggestions.

GRAB A BITE Find a place Uptown to enjoy a uniquely Athens meal.

1824, a milestone year

His name was John Newton Templeton, the first African American student to be accepted into Ohio University in 1824, two hundred years ago.

He graduated 4 years later in 1828 making him the fourth black college graduate in the United States.

Following his time in Athens, Templeton played a significant role in the education and emancipation of black Americans. He became co-editor of an African American newspaper in Pennsylvania. Then later accepted a position as a teacher and principal of the first school designated for black children in Pittsburgh.

Throughout his career, Templeton remained a trailblazer for educational equality.

Today, his legacy lives on at Ohio University through the John Newton Templeton Scholarship Program and the Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium.

NCAA SPORTS The Ohio University Bobcats compete in the MidAmerican Conference (MAC) of the NCAA. Bobcat athletics bring crowds of students, families, and visitors together to enjoy spectacular collegiate sports entertainment. Count on the members of The O- Zone to rev up the crowd’s energy and razz the opponents at games throughout the year.

Campus highlights

COLLEGE GREEN Mature trees and brick pathways create a park-like atmosphere. Class Gateway and Alumni Gateway—two of the most iconic and most photographed locations on campus—connect Ohio University to Uptown Athens.

College Green is a great place to enjoy an outdoor lunch from one of the nearby food trucks.

EMERITI PARK Stroll through this quaint, but scenic park near the Athletics Mall on South Green Drive. Take a seat on one of the park benches and enjoy a moment at this quiet campus oasis.

THE RIDGES This annexed campus features beautiful, Victorian Era architecture, sprawling fields, rolling hills, and The Kennedy Museum of Art. Explore the nearly 700 acres that make up The Ridges property along established trails — one of the most popular being The Ridges Trail which rewards hikers with a panoramic view of Athens County from Radar Hill.

ADVENTURE PRO OUTDOORS Let the pros get you outfitted for ATV trail riding, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, camping and more. Reach out to these experts for outdoor fun in Southeast Ohio.

HOCKHOCKING ADENA BIKEWAY Bring your own bike or rent one at the Hocking College Nature Center (weekends). Ride 2-miles to the Nelsonville Historic Public Square or go as far south on the 22-mile bikeway as you’d like.

SHOPPING Walk the famous Starbrick sidewalks around the Historic Public Square while checking out the one-of-a-kind shops and galleries. The Makers Loft, Mae-Lynn Maker Studio, and The Paper Circle.

Dow Lake at Strouds Run State Park offers paddlers a unique perspective of the changing colors in the fall.

4 Great State Parks BURR OAK STATE PARK For starters, the 644-acre lake provides opportunity for fishing, swimming and boating. Additionally, this park offers a rustic full-service lodge with family suites and a cozy campground with easy access to the lake. Get into the hills on miles of trail ranging from moderate to difficult. Take advantage of the Naturalist Programs, scheduled throughout the year with the park naturalist, Julie Gee. These educational excursions that will leave you marveling all of nature’s wonders — large and small.

LAKE HOPE STATE PARK The entire 2,983-acre park is surrounded by the Zaleski State Forest. This heavily forested region is marked by steep gorges and narrow ridges with remnants of abandoned mining and iron-producing industries.

The park surrounds the lake and boasts a wooded family campground as well as a variety of year-round cabins for families and gatherings of all sizes, including the roomy Laurel Lodge. No visit to the park is complete without a stop in the dining lodge for a hearty meal.

HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK Located in Southeastern Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park is a national and internationally acclaimed State Park.

Stunning in every season, Hocking Hills features beautiful towering cliffs, thrilling waterfalls, and deep, hemlockshaded gorges. With stunning ice formations in winter, wildflowers adorning the forest floor in springtime and vivid foliage in the fall, hikers and nature lovers have plenty to enjoy in this awe-inspiring park.

STROUDS RUN STATE PARK Located outside of the city of Athens and within easy driving distance of Ohio University, Strouds Run State Park surrounds Dow Lake and draws a mix of trail and lake users. Miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding provide scenic views from rugged trails. The lake offers boating, paddling, swimming and a shaded campground.

Sakura means “cherry blossom” and is derived from saku, which means to bloom, or alternately to laugh. Cherry blossoms are a symbolic flower of the spring, a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life.

The blooming of Ohio University’s cherry blossom trees are a welcome sight every spring, when the tiny pinkish flowers reassure us that winter is finally letting go. and the beginning of the spring season has arrived.

Wander beneath a ceiling of pink petals, where the light dances on the grass at your feet. Lie down on a blanket and gaze at the blossoms swaying in the afternoon breeze. It’s a beautiful setting where you can dream about warmer days ahead.

The Sakura — nearly 200 trees, campuswide — line the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway on the southside of the campus. The trees were given to OU in 1979 from Chubu University, located in Kasugai Japan. They serve as a reminder of the 51-year partnership between the institutions.

It’s a spring spectacle that’s not to be missed.

AND MORE TO COME. Mountain bikers have been riding and building trails in Southeast Ohio for decades. The trails at Strouds Run State Park, just 10 minutes from Athens, and Lake Hope State Park, about 30 minutes away, are seasoned MTB destinations that have drawn riders to Athens County for years. The newest MTB network, the Baileys Trail System, about 10 minutes north of Athens, has caused an explosion of interest and enthusiasm for mountain biking in our area.

The Baileys Trail System is unique. It features professional, machine-built trails that help you easily flow through gorgeous national forest land. No matter your skill level, there is a trail for you. Advanced riders will be pleased to know that plenty of rocky features — gardens, drops, kickers — can be found along the blue and black trails. Endurance riders will love the mileage — currently 58 miles, and ultimately 88.

The twisty downhill section of Ohio Route 78 provides some real thrill factor. Find this road along the “Rim of the World” loop of Ohio’s Windy 9.

COUNTLESS CURVES, WITHOUT THE CROWDS The twisty roads of Southeast Ohio have drawn motorcyclists to the area for decades. Yet, before the creation of Ohio’s Windy 9, most out-of-town riders only knew of Ohio Route 555, aka the “Triple Nickel.”

You could say a map put us on the map. In 2015, when Visit Athens County released the first edition of the Ohio’s Windy 9 map, these amazing Appalachian roadways became known to the motorcycling masses.

Today, thousands of motorcyclists come to ride Ohio’s Windy 9 each year, but this still does not create heavy traffic as seen in other moto destinations. With nearly 800 miles along nine separate routes, the OW9 has the capacity to host hundreds of riders at any given time.

If you ride, make plans to visit Athens, Ohio and take on the OW9’s “countless curves, without the crowds.” It won’t disappoint.
