Summer in Alta

Nestled between mountains, the Altafjord and the vast Finnmark Plateau lies our town – Alta. Here, it’s just a short journey from vibrant urban life to untouched Arctic wilderness waiting to be explored.
Alta is more than a destination – it’s our home. And we want to share it with you –our Arctic way of life, lived side by side with nature.
Alta is known for its unique treasures and experiences. Here, you’ll find UNESCO World Heritage rock carvings dating back thousands of years, the legendary Alta River – one of the best salmon rivers in the world – and the traditional Alta Slate, a stone that has made its mark both locally and internationally. Did you know that the world’s very first Northern Lights observatory was built right here in Alta, on Mount Haldde? Today, it’s a DNT cabin and a popular hiking destination offering spectacular views. Alta is also home to Northern Europe’s largest
canyon – Alta Canyon – a dramatic natural wonder shaped by ice and water over thousands of years. And at the heart of it all is Alta’s rich and living Sámi heritage, which remains a vital part of our identity and everyday life.
Here in Alta, outdoor life runs deep, and many take full advantage of the endless summer days – biking, heading out to sea, or hiking in the mountains. People in Alta don’t sleep through the summer nights. From May 17 to July 25, the sun doesn’t set – and for us, that simply means less sleep. The Midnight Sun gives us an extra dose of energy and the freedom to do what we want, whenever it suits us best. Want to hike a mountain at 1 a.m.? Well, we do!
Dear guest, welcome to Alta! We can’t wait to show you all that the Alta region has to offer.

sourced ingredients. This supports local farmers, fishers, and reindeer herders while giving you an authentic taste of the region.
• Shop locally: Buying products from local stores and artisans helps sustain jobs and supports the local economy.

… that the world’s first Northern Lights observatory was built on the top of Mt. Haldde (902 masl). Professor Kristian Birkeland took the initiative to realize the project, and the Norwegian Parliament financed the running of it. The observatory was in active use until 1926 when its operations was transferred to Tromsø.
… that the slate mined in Alta can be found on many traditional rooftops in the Aosta Valley in Italy, at train stations in the Netherlands and along the boardwalk in Barcelona. In the mountains that surround the valley of Alta, you will find some of the best slate quarries in the world. In the beginning of the 20th century, most families had relatives who worked in the slate quarry. While most other cities in Northern Norway depended on fishing, slate was Alta’s largest export product.
… that as a worthy end at the end of the main street there is a church shaped as the Northern Lights – Northern Lights Cathedral. The cathedral is an elegant modern building as a clear landmark for the City of Northern Lights. The Northern Lights Cathedral is more than just a church. In the basement you will find Borealis Alta, where you can learn more about the Northern Lights.
… that 2 of the 8 Norwegian World Heritage Sites listen on the UNESCO World Heritage List are in Alta: the Rock Art of Alta and The Struve Geodetic Arc. There are over 3000 rock carvings at Alta Museum, the oldest ones made about 7000 years ago. The Struve Geodetic Arc was a project that helped to establish the exact shape and size of the earth. One of the measuring points is found on mount Lille Raipas in Alta.
