Explore Alta Authentic Arctic Experiences

Welcome to Alta

Enjoy long summer days!

Nestled between mountains, the Altafjord and the vast Finnmark Plateau lies our town – Alta. Here, it’s just a short journey from vibrant urban life to untouched Arctic wilderness waiting to be explored.

Alta is more than a destination – it’s our home. And we want to share it with you –our Arctic way of life, lived side by side with nature.

Alta is known for its unique treasures and experiences. Here, you’ll find UNESCO World Heritage rock carvings dating back thousands of years, the legendary Alta River – one of the best salmon rivers in the world – and the traditional Alta Slate, a stone that has made its mark both locally and internationally. Did you know that the world’s very first Northern Lights observatory was built right here in Alta, on Mount Haldde? Today, it’s a DNT cabin and a popular hiking destination offering spectacular views. Alta is also home to Northern Europe’s largest

canyon – Alta Canyon – a dramatic natural wonder shaped by ice and water over thousands of years. And at the heart of it all is Alta’s rich and living Sámi heritage, which remains a vital part of our identity and everyday life.

Here in Alta, outdoor life runs deep, and many take full advantage of the endless summer days – biking, heading out to sea, or hiking in the mountains. People in Alta don’t sleep through the summer nights. From May 17 to July 25, the sun doesn’t set – and for us, that simply means less sleep. The Midnight Sun gives us an extra dose of energy and the freedom to do what we want, whenever it suits us best. Want to hike a mountain at 1 a.m.? Well, we do!

Dear guest, welcome to Alta! We can’t wait to show you all that the Alta region has to offer.

Next to Nothing. Close to Everything. This is Arctic Living.

Help us take care of our home

As a visitor to Alta, you are encouraged to make sustainable choices to help preserve the region’s nature and culture.

Here are some tips:

• Extend your stay: Traveling to Alta can have a significant carbon footprint. By staying longer, you reduce the relative environmental impact per day and make the most of your visit.

• Use public transport: It’s an eco-friendly way to explore Alta and Finnmark. Local bus routes provide easy access to many attractions.

• Enjoy local food: Many restaurants in Alta serve dishes made with seasonal, locally

sourced ingredients. This supports local farmers, fishers, and reindeer herders while giving you an authentic taste of the region.

• Shop locally: Buying products from local stores and artisans helps sustain jobs and supports the local economy.

• Respect nature: Stick to marked trails, take your trash with you, and avoid disturbing wildlife. This ensures that nature remains pristine for future generations.

• Use local guides: For a safer and more educational experience. They know the area’s nature, culture, and history.

• Be considerate of other hikers: Greet people you meet on the trail, and avoid playing music too loudly in nature

By following these guidelines, you contribute to keeping Alta a sustainable and attractive destination, benefiting both visitors and the local community.

When in Alta

Welcome to Alta!

Even if you’re visiting during the summer, we recommend bringing a light wool sweater and a warm, windproof jacket. The weather can be both pleasant and warm, but it can also get quite windy. Comfortable and sturdy shoes are also a must to make the most of your visit!

Did you know?

… that the world’s first Northern Lights observatory was built on the top of Mt. Haldde (902 masl). Professor Kristian Birkeland took the initiative to realize the project, and the Norwegian Parliament financed the running of it. The observatory was in active use until 1926 when its operations was transferred to Tromsø.

… that the slate mined in Alta can be found on many traditional rooftops in the Aosta Valley in Italy, at train stations in the Netherlands and along the boardwalk in Barcelona. In the mountains that surround the valley of Alta, you will find some of the best slate quarries in the world. In the beginning of the 20th century, most families had relatives who worked in the slate quarry. While most other cities in Northern Norway depended on fishing, slate was Alta’s largest export product.

… that as a worthy end at the end of the main street there is a church shaped as the Northern Lights – Northern Lights Cathedral. The cathedral is an elegant modern building as a clear landmark for the City of Northern Lights. The Northern Lights Cathedral is more than just a church. In the basement you will find Borealis Alta, where you can learn more about the Northern Lights.

Seasons in Alta:

Winter: November – mid-April

Spring: mid-April – May

Summer: June – mid-August

Autumn: mid-August – October

Polar Night: November 26 – January 17

Midnight Sun: May 17 – July 17

Northern Lights season: September – end of March

… that 2 of the 8 Norwegian World Heritage Sites listen on the UNESCO World Heritage List are in Alta: the Rock Art of Alta and The Struve Geodetic Arc. There are over 3000 rock carvings at Alta Museum, the oldest ones made about 7000 years ago. The Struve Geodetic Arc was a project that helped to establish the exact shape and size of the earth. One of the measuring points is found on mount Lille Raipas in Alta.

Meet a local

What is Arctic Living like from the inside? Here, some locals share their thoughts, feelings and experiences from life in the North.

Here it is close to all the beautiful natural areas. In the summer we have light all day long, In the fall we have beautiful colors, Winter is also absolutely fantastic with twilight light, the beautiful pink light that we have, it is one of the things I like best!

It's mostly summit hikes that I go on. Borras and the north peak are my favorite and Halde is also a great peak, for me all peaks are equally great. I see that many people are getting out more into the open air and getting fitter and exercising, our day trip cabins are very popular! You want to get a little higher up and get some good exercise!

Living in Alta is something very special, but perhaps not something many people think about until they have actually been away from Alta for a while. For example, I myself have lived in Spain in 2009 and 2010, but it was only when you were away that you realized all the magic that lies in and around Alta. The areas, the people and what Alta as a city achieves, are in my opinion something special, with a very own "drive" that is unique.

Explore Alta like a local

Traditionally, people in Finnmark have combined outdoor life with harvesting nature’s resources. Hunting, fishing, and picking berries and mushrooms are deeply rooted traditions. However, in recent years, activity-based outdoor recreation has become an increasingly important part of everyday life. Alta offers many fantastic hiking opportunities, with options for both longer and shorter hikes.

Komsatoppen – 213 MASL

Komsa offers a beautiful view over the Alta Fjord and Alta town.

Starting point: Tilfluktsveien

At the starting point, there is an information board with a map and a trail description. The trail follows a lit path, trail, and rocky terrain. The ascent is steady all the way up, taking about 40 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Lille Raipas – 286 MASL

This mountain peak is part of the Struve Geodetic Arc and offers a stunning view of the Alta Fjord.

Starting point: Parking lot in Stranddalen (accessible from Raipasveien)

At the starting point, an information board provides a map and trail description. The trail is marked with blue ribbons and follows an

old cart road for a while before continuing on a footpath to the top. The hike takes about 1 hour to reach the summit. The distance to the viewpoint is approximately 2 km.

Lathari

The most popular recreational area by the Alta Fjord, featuring a shallow sandy beach and grassy fields. It is child-friendly and equipped with restrooms, barbecue areas, playgrounds, a sand volleyball court, benches, and fire pits.
