Editor’s comment As the 2021 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow continues this month, do you ponder how your business practises could be more sustainable? Do you reuse, recycle and repurpose – but it’s all a bit ‘green light’? Do you want to do more, but don’t know where to start? Well, your first port of call might be to take an online self-assessment using a new tool from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (see News page 11). ABDO’s Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool is bespoke to the optical community and covers a wide range of sustainability tips for individuals, practices and businesses. The industry is awash with eco-conscious innovations – from eyewear materials, to manufacturing processes to contact lens packaging – so do consider taking that extra step to help propel us towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions sooner rather than later. Just one of the latest eco products featured in this month’s issue is Menicon’s new Miru 1day UpSide contact lens featuring its Flat Pack packaging, which exemplifies the company’s environmental ethos. We go behind the scenes at Spec-Care, which is truly embracing sustainability within its workshop operations. Elsewhere, we hear how Optinet has responded to digital demands and altered work practices, and introduce NEG’s new partnership with card payment provider Windcave – which is fully integrated to Optinet FLEX. So take a look around, check out the ABDO sustainability tool, and why not report back to us about the changes you’ve made? We’d love to hear about your green(er) practice and practises. “Next big thing” in edging: Briot Couture

Technologies addressing childhood myopia

1

CooperVision

CooperVision’s SightGlass Vision Business has revealed two-year clinical study data for its Diffusion Optics Technology, designed to slow the progression of myopia in children. After two years, children who wore their DOT-enabled spectacles full time, including not removing them for near vision activities, progressed on average one-half dioptre less than those wearing the control spectacles – a reduction of 59 per cent. The news was presented in the Netherlands last month, where the technology is now commercially available. The Cypress clinical study is now continuing into its third year. Joe Rappon, chief medical officer for SightGlass Vision, said: “Applying our Diffusion Optics Technology to spectacle lenses makes myopia management straightforward to integrate within eyecare practices and easy to become part of children’s everyday lives.” Spectacle lenses incorporating DOT already hold a CE mark declaration to help slow the progression of myopia. CooperCompanies and EssilorLuxottica are forming a joint venture to accelerate the commercialisation of SightGlass Vision technologies. Spectacle lenses with DOT will be launched by EssilorLuxottica.

Luneau Technology

Five years in the making, new Briot Couture from Luneau Technology offers 3D pre-visualisation allowing the operator to determine the ideal base of the lens for “flawless mounting on difficult frame and lens base combinations”. Lionel Iribarne, director of strategy at Luneau Technology, explained: “3D technology has long been used to preview high-precision work in many demanding professions, such as architecture and aeronautics, so we wanted to offer this great opportunity to opticians too. TrueFit technology delivers the optimum bevel placement for maintaining the 3D frame characteristics and delivering an aesthetical, perfect first fit.

Continental Eyewear

Two new models in Continental Eyewear’s Lazer Junior range feature fun patterns on the inside of the temples, glittery detailing and bright colours. Model 2206 in pink (pictured) is a bubbly petite, rounded frame. The glittery temples give Lazer Junior 2206 a hint of sparkle,

Briot Couture also introduces new sensors coupled with advanced software – the Torque Monitoring System (TMS) – which calculates the optimal pressure to be exerted on the lens, in real time and at each step of the edging process. This helps to eliminate misalignment during the edging process, especially while working at high speeds or with slippery hydrophobic lenses. Briot Couture also benefits from exclusive WaveFront technology, developed by Visionix, allowing users to preview how lens designs will look in their intended shape. Designed, developed and assembled in Normandy, France, Briot Couture proudly sports the Origine France Garantie label.

Théa UK

Dry eye portfolio complete

The Blepha EyeBag is now available in the UK from Théa, complementing the company’s portfolio of eye health care products. Formerly the MGDRx EyeBag, developed by consultant ophthalmologist Professor Teifi James, the Blepha EyeBag is a UK made, warming eye mask said to be an effective treatment for dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), blepharitis and the symptoms associated with these conditions. “This is an exciting addition to the Théa portfolio,” said Philip Lewis Williams, managing director of Théa UK. “The Blepha EyeBag is the missing piece in Théa’s dry eye and MGD portfolio. We are delighted that we can now offer a full range of products to patients and practitioners alike looking for a complete treatment of their dry eye. The products were simply made for each other.”

5 Millmead Optical Group Millmead Optical Group celebrated its 75th anniversary in style last month, with a birthday bash overlooking London’s Leicester Square. Over the past seven decades, the company has grown to become one of the larger independently-owned optical suppliers in the UK – incorporating Continental Eyewear and Jai Kudo Lenses alongside Optoplast cases. “We are committed to becoming a major player in the future of sustainable eyewear, lenses and accessories for the optical industry,” said CEO, James Conway. “These plans began with the launch of Optoplast Sustain in 2021 and the return of manufacturing to the UK, where we are producing sustainable spectacle cases.” The company will launch a range of eco-eyewear, called Cameo Sustain, in the near future.

NEWS 8 Stepper UK Stepper UK donated more than £7,000 to support the Leeds Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP) clinic on World Homeless Day (10 October). It follows the company’s financing of the Manchester clinic last year. Peter Reeve, managing director of Stepper UK, said: “Once again, we have decided to focus our charitable support in the direction of VCHP, where it can make a real difference for the next 12 months.” Elaine Styles, VCHP chair, commented: “This donation will make a real difference for so many people... Having joined Alcon in 2020 as customer operations head, Karen will continue to collaborate with key customers, bringing Alcon’s innovations to market – including the recent launch of Precision1 contact lenses and the upcoming launch of Total30. Karen holds a degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Bradford.

Lite Arcs model 5548

The new Lite Arcs collection from Silhouette combines nylon materials with a classic, contemporary design, evoking visuals of the sweeping arches of a bridge to inspire the name. There are two styles for men and two for women, in a variety of understated colours. The curved Nylor frames are transformed using an ultrathin, laser-cut titanium plate that curves all the way to the front hinge, establishing a fluid new style. The two women’s models blend a cateye shape with an architectural finish, accentuating the eyebrow contours to flatter all face shapes. The use of airbrushing techniques add colour effects for these two frames available in Midnight Plum, Lavender fields, Silky Brown and Champagne Teal. The men’s models comprise a minimalist rectangular shape, and one with softened edges in a range of colours including Deep Ocean, Tech Grey, Dusty Gold and Pure Black.

Rebecca Stoner has joined Alcon as head of professional affairs for the UK and Ireland, succeeding Jonathon Bench who has moved to an international role within Alcon. Optometrist Rebecca joined Alcon from Topcon Healthcare, where she worked as clinical affairs specialist and global trainer. Her aim is to combine her enthusiasm and knowledge of contact lenses with commercial awareness, gained through her practice-based work, industry experience and involvement with the British Contact Lens Association. Rebecca holds a BSc in Optometry from the University of Bradford.

12 Charmant

Minamoto model Yukiko

Launched at Silmo Paris 2021, Charmant’s new brand Minamoto, meaning ‘origin’, was inspired by the private collection of historical spectacles of Charmant’s founder. A big influence was the Zen philosophy, which stands for minimalism and a focus on the essentials. The logo is a Japanese kanji, handmade by a master calligrapher and meaning ‘origin’, while the 99.4 per cent titanium frames come with a case made of handcrafted, 100 per cent organic washi paper. The launch collection consists of 12 styles each inspired by characters, actresses and actors as well as the director of the famous Japanese movie, The Seven Samurai, which was also an inspiration for the campaign featuring mere glimpses of the eyewear to create intrigue and curiosity. Our photo shows model Yukiko MN31010, featuring engraving work on the sides. The frame is available with clip-on category 2 polarised lenses with a triacetate film made by a family business in Sabae, Japan.

14 Essilor

At its inaugural SEE Summit on the Environment last month, the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) launched its new Sustainability SelfAssessment Tool. Developed by its Working Group on the Environment, in collaboration with other optical organisations, the tool enables the user to assess where they are with sustainability in practice and the workplace, and access strategies to improve upon it. Working group chair and ABDO vice president, Daryl Newsome, said: “Everyone working in the optical industry has a part to play. If you are an employee you can work towards saving energy and water in practice every day as you go about your job. If you are a manager or business owner the tool gives you plenty of ideas too, and could be the first step towards your own sustainability strategy.” The tool can be found on the ABDO website, www.abdo.org.uk

15 Théa UK The Théa TV advert is on the nation’s screens once again, in preparation for the winter months ahead. The TV advert is showing on ITV3, Alibi and Drama channels during the day and early evenings with the aim of reaching more than 20 million people. The 20-second advert focuses on the symptoms of dry eye and encourages people to try Thealoz Duo to hydrate and soothe their eyes.

Incentivising consumers to think about their eyes

A new national ‘drive to store’ digital media campaign has been launched by Essilor to support independent practices participating in its Take Two multi-pair lens promotion. The Ultimate Sharp Vision campaign, which runs into December, aims to drive consumers to the store locator on www.essilor.co.uk, allowing them to book a sight test at their local independent optician. It’s being delivered across digital platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Display, promoting Varilux and Transitions. Tim Precious, managing director at Essilor, said: “Our drive to store campaign is expected to be viewed over 51 million times across the digital channels with messaging that will influence and incentivise consumers, encouraging them to think about their eyes, book an optical appointment and take up the multi-pair lens promotion with our independent business partners. We believe the new media campaign will continue to play a key role in driving footfall into independent opticians this autumn and help to boost business for our independent business partners.” Point-of-sale packs are available.

Thealoz Duo is said to offer a unique combination of ingredients that are clinically proven to relieve dry eye symptoms, and is free from preservatives. The advert is designed to support Théa’s pharmacy and optometry customers to think about eye self-care as part of their routine and to keep their eyes feeling well.

NEWS 16 Positive Impact

17 CooperVision

New hybrid contact lenses

Newly launched in the UK through Positive Impact (PI), SynergEyes iD hybrid contact lenses include a multifocal powered by a proprietary extended depth of focus (EDOF) design from the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI). The lenses are individually designed and empirically fitted, eliminating the need for multi-use diagnostic fitting sets and trial lens application, while reducing chair and contact time. Support is also provided via SynergEyes iD Patient Application and Removal Resources. PI professional services lead, Phil Thompson, said: “iD stands for individual design and builds on the successful Duette lens, enhancing this design by using a more custommade approach to get the optimum fit. For example, there are now four times the number of skirt designs alone, yet at the same time, the lens is even easier to fit, with no need for fitting sets. Fitting is now completely empirical with the practitioner simply providing refraction, keratometry readings and horizontal visible iris diameter measurements. Most exciting of all is the incorporation of EDOF into the multifocal, powered by the proprietary BHVI design.”

‘Ben’ borrowing specs to read

An interactive film from CooperVision, designed to educate and inspire practitioner confidence around presbyopia and fitting multifocal contact lenses, has been shortlisted for the EVCOM London Film Awards in the Learning and Development category. Titled ‘A funny thing happened on the way to the opticians’, the film was designed and scripted by CooperVision professional services consultant, Samantha Armstrong. It features the acting skills of two other professional services team members, and follows protagonist ‘Ben’ – a reluctant presbyope ‘in denial’ about his age and growing demand for near vision correction. Samantha said: “When I conceptualised this film, I just wanted to produce an educational tool which was really helpful for the contact lens practitioner, but in a light-hearted, interactive way. I was thrilled by the result and humbled by the talent of my colleagues and Hound Dog films. To actually be shortlisted for a coveted award in the film and event industry is mind-blowing.” The winner will be announced on 25 November. NEWS 20 Mark’ennovy

Jim Dickson

Mark’ennovy has expanded its UK team with the appointment of Jim Dickson to the newlycreated role of head of professional affairs, UK and Ireland. A qualified contact lens optician, Jim has broad experience in practices across the UK including a period as a joint venture partner with Specsavers. He more recently worked as part of the UK professional affairs team at Alcon.

As part of his role, Jim will lead the UK roll-out of the new Mark’ennovy Academy for Training. He said: “I am very excited to join a business that places a high value on the role of professional affairs, as well as their commitment to improving lives through continued development in the field of individually crafted contact lenses.”

21 Independents Day Following the postponement of its one-day Independents Day event, due to take place last month at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, organiser Proven Track Record (PTR) has confirmed it will look to run the event in early spring 2022. PTR director Nick Atkins said: “Like many other optical events, we are sadly a casualty of the current situation and whilst we have continued to add delegates since the summer postponement, sadly the numbers do not make running the event commercially viable.” Co-director David Goad added: “After the postponement due to the delayed ending of national restrictions, Nick and I are deeply disappointed to have had to come to this decision. After the nightmare that was 2020, we were looking forward to getting back to some semblance of normality. Sadly, our confidence that we could run a face-to-face conference in 2021 proved a little optimistic.” The rearranged event will remain themed, ‘Commercialising myopia management’.

22 Louis Stone (Optical) September saw Louis Stone (Optical) donate 1,600 PD rulers and pens, worth more than £10,000, to universities across the UK that have shown “immeasurable loyalty” to the optical distributor over the years. “City, Cardiff, Aston, Hertfordshire, Ulster, Plymouth, Anglia Ruskin, Glasgow Caledonian and UWE universities received an influx of complimentary PD rulers and pens for their incoming new students – as well as ones that missed out on receipt of them during the height of the pandemic last year,” said Clare Gaba, head of marketing and communications for the company.

AN INDEPENDENT VIEW Time to review the Opticians Act At the AIO conference in Kenilworth on 9 and 10 October, there was a panel session on the subject of independents ditching the NHS contract and going completely private. The session was so popular amongst members that it ended up being standing room only; and was lively and very interesting. In a straw poll during the session, around three quarters of those practising in England who had not already made the move to going 100 per cent private, indicated that they were seriously considering doing so. Clearly, if this were to be replicated across all independent practices, it could potentially present the NHS in England with a major problem in the delivery of routine sight testing across the country. The subject of going private does, of course, throw up a number of other issues and questions, such as serving local communities and making eye health care available to all, particularly those who may be disadvantaged and cannot afford private care. The biggest question it throws up, however, is whether the 30-plus year-old Opticians Act of 1989 is still fit for purpose, and the panel session came up with a resounding answer that it is not. The AIO will, therefore, be writing to Sajid Javid, the secretary of state for health and social care, seeking a review of the Act with extensive consultation across the UK that should take account of the progressive delivery of eye health care services through community optometry in Scotland and Wales; and question why such a regime is not being delivered in England. The fractured postcode lottery that is the current reality for the provision of eyecare services in England cannot continue. There are those from other optical bodies who have counselled ‘be careful what you ask for’ in the past, but if there is to be a wholesale abandonment of the GOS contract by independents in England, this does not resonate any more. Nothing less than a root and branch review of the Act is required.

“We are so proud of the universities we have a close relationship with – from equipment fairs, awards evenings, sports kit sponsorships and now even webinars given the current climate. Our bond with such universities continues to go from strength to strength,” Clare added. Vision Now November 2021 15

P R A C T I C E M AT T E R S

Developing thoughts This month, Phil Mullins rounds-up the key talking points at the recent AIO conference

Nice to see you, to see you nice patients lost and the majority happy to sign up to various payment plans. The main advice offered from those who had gone private was to make sure all practice staff were on board with the change, and singing from the same hymn sheet. It was also important to communicate fully with patients about the change; including why you longer accept GOS and the freedom it can bring for their eyecare. A real positive of this model is no longer having to ‘sell’ eyecare upgrades such as OCT or extended examinations. Everyone gets the full package and everyone pays.

Autumn has historically been a time for some of the smaller optical events to take place. For obvious reasons, the majority of these events have been postponed for the last two years – including our own members’ conference. So it was great that in early October, the Association for Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) went ahead with its 2021 conference in Kenilworth – with both NEG and Optinet in attendance to see everyone in person. As one delegate put it: “It’s nice to see people in 3D again”. It was truly great to be with enthusiastic people discussing all things independent over a cuppa. With the current CET cycle coming to an end next month, Mike Ockenden and the AIO team certainly made sure no-one was going to miss out on CET points – with CET topics as diverse as children struggling at school, cataract surgery, frame materials, myopia control, nystagmus and more. Add to this the more than 20 exhibitors in the exhibition hall and you can see why the event was so popular. So, what were the main talking points over coffee and lunch? Uppermost, of course, was how businesses were responding to the ongoing pandemic. The overwhelming vibe was positive, thankfully, with most delegates continuing to be very busy in practice with patients spending well. However, this means that many have had limited time away from practice over the past 18 months and are hoping that 2022 will provide some much-needed R&R opportunities. What was great to see though was the real positivity in the room: independent practitioners fired up for what comes next.

Phil and Optinet’s Chris Smith at the AIO conference

PRIVATE-ONLY PRACTICE Discussions about dropping GOS contracts and going totally private are gaining momentum – and this was the topic of a lively panel debate on the Saturday afternoon. Although only a handful in the room had already gone private, the majority were considering it. However, there were also those who would never be able to due to the demographics of their locality – and those who never would out of a moral obligation to their patients. This is something that does stick with me; if all independents go totally private, what happens to those unable to afford their eyecare? Do we just leave them to the big players, or (even worse) drive them to the cheapest specs they can find online? Reports from those who have taken the plunge were very positive, with few

One delegate asked how much the NHS would have to pay to keep delegates on board, but there never seemed a right answer. Personally, I think it’s not just about the amount paid, it’s the fact that it is such hard work getting paid at all at the moment. With the payment system constantly having issues, practitioners waste hours on admin. I am sure fewer practices would be considering dropping GOS if they were paid 100 per cent on time, every time. So what was the main take away from the AIO conference? From my own point of view, it’s that there are practices which can drop GOS and go private very easily, in fact they have probably been nearly there for a year or more. Some practices will never consider it, be it for the area they are in or from their moral stance on the issue. In reality, I think most practices will end up running a hybrid system, where they offer limited GOS appointments and push a payment plan option for the majority of their patients. This seems to work for practices across the country, but only time will tell if this is the right approach. Vision Now November 2021 17

Flexible and forward-focused

O P T I N E T U P D AT E

Chris Smith outlines some of the latest developments to the Optinet FLEX practice management system When it comes to practice management, not all businesses and business owners are the same; the needs of a traditional bricks and mortar practice are different to those of a hybrid practice where the owner may not work in the business. They may operate at different times and from different locations, from home in the evening or from a mobile office as needs demand. Optinet FLEX can help no matter what the needs are. FLEX can send financial reports by email at the end of the day or automatically copy a staff task to a co-worker’s inbox when they are not in the practice. For businesses that need access from more than one site, or just prefer to have the flexibility of being able to access the system from anywhere, FLEX can be centralised and hosted in the Cloud. Benefits of centralising your business include:  Frequently performed tasks can be handled centrally  Software configuration remains consistent across the group  An ‘always on’ system that can be accessed from anywhere  Location restrictions are removed, e.g. access diaries from other branches

DEVELOPMENT MATTERS At Optinet we believe in development; software needs to evolve to keep pace with the digital transformations that are taking place all around us. We always have an eye to the future and close discussions with our Early Access Group let us check ideas in the ‘real world’ before starting any development work and automatic updates ensure the software is always up to date. Our next release is arriving in practices right now and some of the latest developments are outlined below. Integrated card payment system. Optinet has partnered with Windcave, a world leading payment provider, to bring an integrated payment solution to FLEX (see page 23). The benefits of this new integration are:  Improved speed of transaction  Eradicate keying errors by no longer having to manually enter the transaction amount  Highest level of encryption (P2PE)  Latest mobile terminal  Competitive transaction rates eGOS England. The next release brings the addition of eGOS6 claims and Pre-Visit Notifications to FLEX, meaning all GOS claims can be created and submitted using FLEX. Patient signatures can be captured using a signature pad, on-screen or on a mobile device using our free to use companion apps.

Supporting all your IT needs

Corporate Schemes. FLEX Corporate sees some enhancements when the next update arrives in practice. The update builds on the existing functionality of allowing practices to create corporate records, assign patients to a corporate record and build entitlements for each company. The entitlement list can be accessed from the till system to reduce the patient balance. New functionality. This allows you to allocate a purchase order number to a till item, and print corporate invoices. Further enhancements are planned for next year’s release – so watch this space.

SERVICE AND SUPPORT Whilst we are committed to ongoing software development, we are fiercely proud of the service and support that we offer, starting with the initial software demonstration which, where possible, takes place in the practice or online if the customer prefers. By visiting the practice, we get a feel for the business, get to meet the owner and staff, and start to plan delivery of the software and the training. We are able to convert data from other systems to ensure continuity of the business and we offer on-site training at the point of installation, helping new users to get the most out of the software. Post-installation, we offer remote telephone support, management away-days and training courses at our Worcestershire offices. Our online customer portal is available 24/7 where practices can look up answers to FAQs and open new support tickets. For almost 35 years, Optinet has developed software for independent opticians. We understand practice needs and have the valuable experience that makes Optinet a name you can trust. Miru 1day Flat Pack eco-friendly packaging

Beyond 70 years of innovation As Menicon celebrates 70 years in business, Neil Retallic discusses the company’s environmental ethos and exciting new innovations This year Menicon is celebrating its 70th anniversary of helping people to see life in detail. There is an ethos that runs through the company’s DNA of ‘Do not imitate others’, which has led to out-of-the-box thinking. This approach drives our pioneering innovation and technology, with principles in place to respect the environmental impact. From the products we design to our business operations, we aim to reduce our impact on the environment to protect society and the planet. That is why we have signed up to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Goals for 2030. We have placed sustainability at the heart of our business activities, spanning material development, lens design and the manufacture of contact lenses and care solutions. A great example of this is the cutting-edge design of the eco-friendly packaging of the Miru 1day Flat Pack (Figure 1) – technologically advanced and incredibly easy to use for consumers. The environmental credentials of the unique lens packaging of the Miru 1day Flat Pack are leading the way in reducing waste in the following ways:  The primary packaging uses significantly less raw material and is recyclable  The Miru 1day Flat Pack blister results in 80 per cent less waste compared

20 Vision Now November 2021

to conventional packaging  The package is produced by reusing 99 per cent of the plastics used in the contact lens manufacturing process  T he storage case is made from the moulds that produce the lenses inside the pack, demonstrating excellence in the circular use of raw materials. The packaging weight for a 12-month supply of Miru 1day Flat Pack (730 packs) results in only 20 per cent waste compared to conventional packaging At our contact lens manufacturing plants, we have also taken steps to minimise our consumption of resources such as water, gas and energy. A good example of this

is at the Emmen Plant in the Netherlands where 550 solar panels were installed which provide approximately 150 MWh of electricity annually – accounting for 15 per cent of the energy required. Irrespective of the seasons, we aim to make our processes as energy efficient as possible using a heat pump to store cool air in a well in the ground with the stored air used to cool the building in the summer. Reducing the volume of water used in our production processes has also been a priority and at our Kakamigahara plant, we have managed to save 50 per cent of the water previously used. We are making good progress and our innovative and pioneering spirit will continue to drive our efforts in meeting sustainability goals and, of course, delivering high quality contact lens products that wearers can trust.

LIFE-CHANGING POSSIBILITIES FOR ALL Contact lenses have evolved at such a pace since I qualified as an optometrist 15 years ago. New technologies and innovations have led to such a wide range of contact lenses available to patients, making them a viable option as a complement to spectacles. Our benefits to the wearer can be lifechanging (Figure 2). Contact lens wear can be life-changing

PRODUCT PROFILE

Providing patients with what they need

As eyecare practitioners (ECPs), it is our job to make sure we offer the best solution tailored to each patient and that is what I love most about working with Menicon. Through both our speciality and frequent replacement divisions, we can offer exactly what patients need and we understand too the challenges ECPs face in reducing drop-out rates. The key is good education, communication and support, coupled with lenses that can match wearers’ needs and lifestyles. Taking education as a starting point, there is a great range of support available. The recently-published British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) CLEAR report on evidence-based contact lens practice is a great source of information. Menicon has also developed a range of training tools to help make selecting the optimal lens as easy as possible. Our online calculators and the launch of our virtual e-learning academy make it easy to access support. Or depending on preference, face-to-face sessions can be delivered at our Menicon Training Clinic, where education sessions and tailormade training are on offer, including a six-session programme that covers five product groups. Once ECPs are familiar with the product range and options available, providing a successful contact lens fit experience is the next step to happy patients. This is where good lens design, manufacturers’ fitting guides and keeping the ocular surface healthy come into play. It is important to find out about the wearer’s lifestyle, visual and environmental needs, and how these relate to their motivation to wear contact lenses. Cutting-edge developments in lens materials mean wearers can enjoy all-day comfort as well as superior vision (Figure 3). Fitting speciality lenses is also possible and can easily be achieved. Over the past two years, hospital waiting times have increased as a result of the pandemic. It has been great to see practitioners

embrace lens fitting for patients with complex eye conditions with the support of the Menicon team to make it as easy as possible, ensuring success for wearers. So you see with so much support on hand, a wide range of products to suit each individual, there’s really no reason why contact lenses cannot be offered as an option to everyone suitable.

Embracing the future Lundie Loops: part of the portfolio

Sustainability is the future and our mission is clear, writes Rob Barrow

Becoming a sustainable organisation is something many of us should be working towards. In the optical industry, sustainability is already making an impact to our lives. Materials such as acetate have been a traditional frame making material for decades, contributing to the sustainability of the environment. As customers embrace the need to change, they will seek optical products and services that support their views and values. At Spec-Care, our mission is to provide a high-level service, professional advice and a strong link between you and your patients’ expectations. Our future path is set and our mission is clear. We take pride in supplying quality modifications, adjustments and frame repairs. Myself and Lee Mayne are your workshop team, available to take your technical questions. Our workshop is stacked full of traditional bits and bobs: from pinned hinges and metal curls from the vintage era to thousands of frames awaiting use as spare parts. More surprising is the technology that has been creeping in. Our workplace is run efficiently by those people you will often have first contact with – Helena, Yassin and Robbie. The latter two bring office and coding skills with them as they work towards their apprenticeship qualifications. The efficiency of the office is key to keeping down wastage and aiming for increased IT integration and minimal paper usage. The tipping point has been reached; we can now embrace the future of optics. It just might signal the irreversible downward trend of the High Street

22 Vision Now November 2021

consumer culture towards an increasedly decerning public, looking for quality and accountability from the products they purchase. How many reading this have reimaged their practices during lockdown, become more engaged with customers and emerging with a renewed sense of professional purpose?

EVOLUTION IN THE WORKSHOP Looking to the future, we have had to put time in to developing the IT within the workshop too. The benches still have the technicians' hand tools all laid out in a precise but seemingly eclectic manner. But we never seem to be too far from a laptop, screen or discussion about the most recent software trial. The propane burners are now silent, the smell of spray paints has long gone. Did you know that nearly all our metal repairs are conducted with a laser welding unit? This machine is so familiar to us that we can easily forget that the precision it forges reduces all other finishing processes. How will IT make the workshop more efficient and sustainable? We can look at 3D printing, from simple parts for frame fit adaptions, to more complex prototyping. We can work out the exact volume of material we need to complete the work before we begin the print; we can plan effectively and operate to minimal wastages by analysing stress within the design software. Future projects have expanded this use of software to create virtual CNC analysis, so we can now cut materials with reduced energy consumption with less machine wear.

REPRESENTING YOUR PRACTICE We are proud to promote sustainability by representing practices through our work,

Shortening frame sides

providing consumers with a sustainable, eco-friendly and first-rate service. Being able to deliver a service based on environmentally safe values is a great step we have taken for a future where ecofriendly purchases are the subconscious norm for the public. We understand customers want their frames to be high quality and that’s why every frame we repair comes with our guarantee, ensuring we are satisfying you and representing your practice to the best standards achievable. Whether the frame needs a few laser welds and a pair of sides, or just a stuck screw drilled, it’s all the same charge. We take the time to recondition every frame, and have a parts account with many suppliers so like-forlike parts can be sourced too. Spec-Care is an easily accessible company, just visit our trade tab at www.speccareservices.co.uk and fill out the account registration form. All order forms can be downloaded as fillable PDFs, and one of our admin team will email the pricelists and additional information. 2021 has been a big development year for our business and we are very proud to be shortlisted in the following Optician Awards categories: Supplier of the Year and Technology Supplier of the Year. Trust us to be your lab for all your frame care needs.

For edgy, super cool looks with Big Apple flair, Woow eyewear traversed the Atlantic and captured the vitality, optimism and vibrancy of New York City with its showcase of sunglasses in buoyant colours. Super Rock seizes the eclectic vibes of the city with a voluminous shape in glossy red with tortoise accents. Pas de la Mule Tarian Patchwork collection

FREE SPIRITS French eyewear designer Jeremy Tarian has always taken an individualistic approach to frames. Designed in Paris and handcrafted in the Jura region, Tarian Eyewear embodies timeless traditions. His latest collection is based on the beauty and variety of flowers. Joy is the theme with distinctive shapes and complementary colours. The Flower collection includes both optical and sunglass designs for men and women. Expressive, fun, stylish and with bold shapes, Struktur Eyewear is crafted in Normandy with superior quality. The Dreamcatcher frame in eye-catching Turtle Beach tortoiseshell is among the charismatic designs available for men and women. Also in Paris was Krom Eyewear, an independent brand from the Alsace region of France, where the frames are crafted. The unique designs are light and airy, with inspiration from filigree jewellery concepts that are a pleasure to wear.

Beautiful frames deserve fine care and protection, and why not a bit of merriment as well? Any Di from Germany creates unique eyeglass case covers with animals, fruits and even tennis balls. Her latest collection includes a sleek case with a pair

For independent opticians, Silmo 2021 was the ideal opportunity to rediscover the buzz and bustle of exploring collections. The event was decisive and upbeat for creative eyewear platforms, and a positive endorsement for the future of imaginative spectacle designs and their artistic innovators.
