Coastlines are landscape topos which always surprise and excite. They are the meeting pointbetweenwaterandland,thelimitbetweenthefiniteandtheinfinite;placesofdepartureandarrival,ofmeetingandseparation.Perhapsforthesereasons,deeplylinked touniversalarchetypes,theyneverceasetoexerttheirfascinationoneachofus.Anditis preciselytheseplacesthataretheprotagonistsoftheAugustissue,withthestoryofthree seasidevillas:ontheCĂŽtedâAzur,ontheRivieradellePalmeandinSaint-Tropez.Projects inwhichthehorizonandthecoastallandscapearenotonlymarvelloussettingstocontemplatebutwerethearchitectsâfirstsourceofinspiration.Alotofspaceoftheissueisalso dedicatedto greenery, withtwo authorial gardens by Kristian Buziol and James Doyle DesignAssociates,abeautifulselectionof16ClematisandavisittodiscovertheparkofVilla dâEste, which reflects its beauty on the waters of the Lake of Como. â

businessmenfromPiedmontwhowantedaholidayhomethatwas privatebutindirectcontactwiththesea.Oncethepropertyhad beenidentified,inordertobestmeettheserequirements,thearchitectandthecommissionersdecidedtorebuilditfromscratch,preservingonlythefine,romantic-inspiredgardensetupinthe1960s bythepreviousowners.AchoicethatgaveVillaNicoleadditional quality,thankstothefinecontrastcreatedbetweentheclassicism ofthegreenareasandthepurityofthebuildingâslines.âThegarden isawonderfullegacythatgavetheprojectevengreaterstrength,â explainsthearchitect.Tofullyenjoythemarvellouspanoramathat embracestheentiregulfitoverlooks,thevillaiscompletelyopento theviewofthesea,thankstolargefull-heightwindowsthatframe viewsofpricelessbeauty.Inkeepingwiththearchitectâsstyle,the volumetryistheresultofintersectionsandinterpenetrationsof parallelepipeds,givingthewholearigorouslygeometricshape.The radicalrationalityofthiscompositionalapproachisdilutedbythe choiceofbuildingmaterials,inparticulartheexposedsplitTranistonealternatingwithplasteredwalls.Achoicewhich,together withthebrownhueofthesunshades,requiredtoprotectthelarge windowsfromthesunâsrays,andthecladdingoftheliftshaft,favoursthebuildingâsintegrationintothelandscapecontext.âThe useofnaturalelementssuchasstoneallowedustosoftenthegeometryofthevolumesandbalancethecoldnessoftheglazing.The villaisacleanandcleargeometricelementthatdoesnotoverpowerbutleavesspaceforthecolourofthesea,flowersandskyâ.The definitionofthelayoutreflectsthelifestyleoftheowners.âTheir wishwasforavillatobelivedâbarefootâ,inmaximumfreedomâ. Theflooratpoollevel,whichislighterandmoreairyanddedicatedtosummerliving,wasthereforecreatedinfullcontinuitywith theexterior.Achoicehighlightedbythestonefloorswhich,from theinside,continuetowardsthegardenwithoutjumpsinheight orinterruptingelements.Thislevelhousesalivingroomwitha kitchenandthebedroomsforthethreechildrenwithbathrooms. Themezzaninelevel,ontheotherhand,hasbeendesignedforuse inthespringandautumnperiods,whichatthislatitudearein anycaseclimaticallyverypleasant.Thelivingarea,alargeopen spacewithseparateddiningroom,isflankedbythemasterbedroomwithabathroomandwalk-inwardrobeandaguestroom withensuitebathroom.Crowningthehomeisaspectacularroof terracewithabreathtakingview.Theinteriordesignisalsosober andessential.Toenhancetheviewsframedbythewindows,the coloursaresubduedandmostlyinneutraltones.Throughoutthe house,thelargewindowshavethusbecomeanelementofcolour
