Coastlines are landscape topos which always surprise and excite. They are the meeting pointbetweenwaterandland,thelimitbetweenthefiniteandtheinfinite;placesofdepartureandarrival,ofmeetingandseparation.Perhapsforthesereasons,deeplylinked touniversalarchetypes,theyneverceasetoexerttheirfascinationoneachofus.Anditis preciselytheseplacesthataretheprotagonistsoftheAugustissue,withthestoryofthree seasidevillas:ontheCôted’Azur,ontheRivieradellePalmeandinSaint-Tropez.Projects inwhichthehorizonandthecoastallandscapearenotonlymarvelloussettingstocontemplatebutwerethearchitects’firstsourceofinspiration.Alotofspaceoftheissueisalso dedicatedto greenery, withtwo authorial gardens by Kristian Buziol and James Doyle DesignAssociates,abeautifulselectionof16ClematisandavisittodiscovertheparkofVilla d’Este, which reflects its beauty on the waters of the Lake of Como. ■

businessmenfromPiedmontwhowantedaholidayhomethatwas privatebutindirectcontactwiththesea.Oncethepropertyhad beenidentified,inordertobestmeettheserequirements,thearchitectandthecommissionersdecidedtorebuilditfromscratch,preservingonlythefine,romantic-inspiredgardensetupinthe1960s bythepreviousowners.AchoicethatgaveVillaNicoleadditional quality,thankstothefinecontrastcreatedbetweentheclassicism ofthegreenareasandthepurityofthebuilding’slines.“Thegarden isawonderfullegacythatgavetheprojectevengreaterstrength,” explainsthearchitect.Tofullyenjoythemarvellouspanoramathat embracestheentiregulfitoverlooks,thevillaiscompletelyopento theviewofthesea,thankstolargefull-heightwindowsthatframe viewsofpricelessbeauty.Inkeepingwiththearchitect’sstyle,the volumetryistheresultofintersectionsandinterpenetrationsof parallelepipeds,givingthewholearigorouslygeometricshape.The radicalrationalityofthiscompositionalapproachisdilutedbythe choiceofbuildingmaterials,inparticulartheexposedsplitTranistonealternatingwithplasteredwalls.Achoicewhich,together withthebrownhueofthesunshades,requiredtoprotectthelarge windowsfromthesun’srays,andthecladdingoftheliftshaft,favoursthebuilding’sintegrationintothelandscapecontext.“The useofnaturalelementssuchasstoneallowedustosoftenthegeometryofthevolumesandbalancethecoldnessoftheglazing.The villaisacleanandcleargeometricelementthatdoesnotoverpowerbutleavesspaceforthecolourofthesea,flowersandsky”.The definitionofthelayoutreflectsthelifestyleoftheowners.“Their wishwasforavillatobelived‘barefoot’,inmaximumfreedom”. Theflooratpoollevel,whichislighterandmoreairyanddedicatedtosummerliving,wasthereforecreatedinfullcontinuitywith theexterior.Achoicehighlightedbythestonefloorswhich,from theinside,continuetowardsthegardenwithoutjumpsinheight orinterruptingelements.Thislevelhousesalivingroomwitha kitchenandthebedroomsforthethreechildrenwithbathrooms. Themezzaninelevel,ontheotherhand,hasbeendesignedforuse inthespringandautumnperiods,whichatthislatitudearein anycaseclimaticallyverypleasant.Thelivingarea,alargeopen spacewithseparateddiningroom,isflankedbythemasterbedroomwithabathroomandwalk-inwardrobeandaguestroom withensuitebathroom.Crowningthehomeisaspectacularroof terracewithabreathtakingview.Theinteriordesignisalsosober andessential.Toenhancetheviewsframedbythewindows,the coloursaresubduedandmostlyinneutraltones.Throughoutthe house,thelargewindowshavethusbecomeanelementofcolour

Elsewhere, a large Rhaphiolepis bibas (the new namefortheloquatorcommonmedlartreeofJapan)contributesa vertical lift, while its flowers permeate the air with their sweet scent inautumn-winteranditsdelicateorangefruitsglimpsethroughthe leavesinspring.Themainwalkwaytotheresidenceischaracterisedalongonesidebyacortenplanterborderingarowofquincunx boxwoodsclippedintospheresofdifferentsizes,interspersedwith Santolinachamaecyparissus,chosenmainlyforthesilver-greycolourofthestemsandleaves,ratherthantheyellowoftheflowers, toprovideacontrasttothebrightgreenoftheboxwoodsandrecall theirroundedshape.Asmallpotagerencarréshasalsofounda place in the garden, in a defiladed position but with the best exposure for growing vegetables. Buziol’screativeflairandexperiencehaveleftnothingtochance, fromthedesigntothecomposition,fromthecolourstothescents, thereisalwaystherightplantintherightplace,evenduringseasonal changes, in the great metaphor of a garden that recreates a scene of natural beauty on a small scale. ■
