While on his visit he went to the pavilions, halls and stalls and met delegates, country representatives and exhibitors. He showed particular interest in the exhibits displayed at the stalls of M.B.D.A, Thales, City links, Integrated Dynamics (ID), DIEHL, Russian Helicopters, Kestral and Pakistan Machine Tool Factory.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Qamar said that Pakistan is having serious talks with many countries regarding import and export of defence products, especially with Turkey. Additionally, he spoke of the massive leaps of developments that have been taking place in the Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV) industry, Pakistan s UAV industry has seen a lot of upgrade. At the moment the drones being developed are more focused on surveillance and reconnaissance, but constant testing is taking place to increase the applications of the UAV products, added Mr. Qamar.

Two types of planes developed and manufactured by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), namely the Super Mushak, a trainer plane and a third generation fighter plane JF 17 Thunder are receiving the most international attention. Potential sales and work orders worth forty million US$ are under negotiation and on the process of finalization. These orders are mostly being put forth by countries from Africa and the Middle East.

Havelsan, an investment of Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, is a global software and systems integration company, serving in IT and defence markets worldwide. They met high ranking officials of the Pakistan Air Force who showed great interest in Havelsan s core capabilities that lie in C4ISR, Simulation and Training Systems, Interoperability and Management Information Systems fields. A Memorandum of Agreement and an exclusive Teaming Agreement between Havelsan and the Pakistan Air Force is due to be signed very soon, for collaboration on their on R&D projects and Simulation & Training Systems of JF-17, F16, C-130 Super Mushak and MI-17 respectively.

At the moment PAC is preparing Pakistan Air Force s requirements for making squadrons and fulfilling PAF s needs, once that is done within a year or two, it will turn its attention towards commercial exports. Once our birds are ready for Pakistan s own needs and replacing its older versions of aircrafts, we will be commencing our export activities, said Air Cdre (R) Suhail Salim, Director Sales and Marketing of PAC Kamra.

JF 17s potential orders are more than a hundred in number, as it is proving to be the lowest cost fighter aircraft of the third generation internationally. Here at the IDEAS 2012 more than 19 official delegates from various countries have shown keen interest in purchasing the plane and discussions are in order. PAC has countless potential orders lining up, and There is a rising demand which we are gradually absorbing according to our capacity, Air Cdre (R) Suhail adds.

Pakistan s Thriving UAV Industry Though everyone knows of the presence of drones in Pakistan, most are only aware of the existence of American manufactured drones that are aiding the Pakistani Military to ward off terrorism.

Pakistan s expertise in designing and manufacturing the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles; UAV itself still remains largely unnoticed. Although Pakistan may not be able to compete with its foreign counterparts in this faculty at the moment, but for a comparatively new industry it has already come a long way. The increasing pace of development in the arena will bring Pakistan s UAV industry in the forefront in the years to come.

Pakistan s UAV industry revolves around both its public and private sector, with both actively working on mastering the technology and churning out new products continuously. Pakistan which was once dependent on international assistance for the technology of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles is now being gradually recognized as a reliable and affordable option for the purchase of UAVs. The public sector companies present in Pakistan producing drones are Pakistan Aeronautical Complex; PAC, Air Weapons Complex; AWC, Global Industrial and Defence Solutions; GIDS and National Development Complex; NDC. The forerunner in the public sector has been the PAC, with its Uqaab drone in use by the Pakistan Army. Other PAC UAVs include the Baaz, and Ababeel.

PAC has begun manufacturing Falco UAVs in collaboration with the Italian company Selex Galileo as well. Initially designed solely for aerial reconnaissance and gathering information, PAC now has plans to upgrade the vehicles to accommodate weapons systems too.

GIDS, is also one of the largest public

defense sector companies which amongst other departments has a highly structured UAV division, and produces a whole range of operational and training UAVs. GIDS s popular UAVs are the Huma-1, Shahpur and its own version of the Uqaab.

Other prominent UAVs of the public sector are AWC s Bravo+ also in use by the Pakistan Air force (PAF). The EWI s Heliquad UAV is designed to perform covert operations and can do it efficiently owing to its small size and Whisper Watch signals intelligence package, which is capable of picking up radio and other

communication signals.

Apart from its public sector, Pakistan s private sector is fast prospering into a highly developed UAV industry and comprises of avant-garde companies with cutting edge technology. Amongst them is (ID) a full-service UAV systems provider based in Karachi, Pakistan. It designs and integrates UAV systems primarily for the Government of Pakistan, the Pakistan armed forces and for export purposes. The UAVs they produce serve scientific and defensive purposes which are used to save lives and monitor potentially hostile environments impossible for human personnel to

access.

The usage of Pakistan s drones are not limited locally, rather are also being exported to several countries. For example ID exports its UAVs to Australia, Spain, South Korea and Libya and even the United States. Its surveillance drone known as The Border Eagle is being used by the US homeland security department for border patrol duties. A significant characteristic of these drones is that apart from being state of the art, they cost only a fraction of the cost of comparable products made internationally. ID UAV prices start from about $ 20,000 while c o m p a r a b l e U AV products made in the West start from about $ 200,000. Another such company is Satuma, (Surveillance and Target Unmanned Aircraft). It is a small UAV specialist company based near Islamabad, Pakistan. Its products include Flamingo, Jasoos and Mukhbar U AV s .

Subsequently, Pakistan is fulfilling the UAV technological needs of both the civil and military sectors of Pakistan and even of other nations.

Pakistan s capabilities in mastering the UAV technology are a magnificent example of the extent of technological capacity that Pakistan has.

With international collaborations and massive investments Pakistan s UAV program is already fast progressing. It may be the killer drones of America that are being noticed the most, but Pakistan too is gradually coming out of the shadows and into the limelight with drones that have more constructive and peaceful applications. Pakistan s drones may currently be incapable of taking the place of the Predator , but they are fast catching up and adopted locally and internationally.

Pakistan China Defence Ties Stand the Test of Time The foundations of the historical bondage between Pakistan and China were laid as early as 1950 when Pakistan became one of the first nations to recognize the People s Republic of China (PRC).

Friendship between China and Pakistan has withstood the pressures of time, and especially has adapted to the changing global and regional environment.

Favorable relations with China are a pillar of Pakistan's foreign policy and both nations fully support each other on all domestic, regional and global issues. China and Pakistan also share extremely close military relations, with China supplying a range of modern armaments to the Pakistani defense forces and both nations jointly developing a number of advanced military projects.

Recently, both friends have also decided to cooperate in advancing and improving Pakistan s civilian nuclear power sector in spite of China facing criticism from the West. Their alliance has withstood the test of times and grows stronger every day.

This strategic relationship is extremely important in the world's geo-strategic alliances and the strong defense ties are helpful in countering the influence of other regional and global players. In recent years this relationship has strengthened through ongoing defence projects and agreements between Pakistan and China.

The ever steady Chinese assistance helped Pakistan establish munition factories, providing technological assistance and modernizing existing facilities. Both countries are involved in the joint ventures of several special military projects, which include collaborating in the development of JF17 Thunder fighter aircraft, K-8 Karakorum advance training aircraft, space technology, AWACS systems, F22P frigates with helicopters, Al-Khalid and Al-Zarrar tanks and the Babur cruise missile. Beijing also built a turnkey ballistic-missile manufacturing facility near the city of Rawalpindi and helped

Pakistan develop the 750-km-range, solid-fueled Shaheen-1 ballistic missile.

Additionally, both armies frequently organize joint military exercises and their special forces are regularly involved in tactical training maneuvers.

The JF-17 Thunder is a potent example of this friendship, and a key part of Pakistan s plans to upgrade its aging fleet of American-supplied F-16s and Frenchmade Mirages while countering the air

prowess of its archrival neighbor-India.

China and Pakistan are also discussing plans for Pakistan to buy China s more advanced FC-20 fighter, also known as the J-10 which will make Pakistan the first country to acquire this advanced third generation craft.

The relationship between the two armed forces is solid too, which has been strengthened by frequent high-level visits, joint exercises and enhanced technological cooperation. In April 2012, a commissioning ceremony of PNS Azmat, Pakistan s first fast attack craft (missile) was held at the Xingang Shipyard in Tianjin, China. The visiting Pakistan Chief of Naval Staff was the chief guest of the ceremony, who termed it as a milestone in defence and strategic cooperation between Pakistan and China.

The vessel is equipped with state-of-theart weapons and sensors, including surface-to-surface missiles and has stealth features. The construction of the first craft was completed in China and

the second craft of this joint venture will be completed in Pakistan by the end of 2012.

China has played a major role in the development of Pakistan's nuclear infrastructure, especially when stringent export controls from West made it impossible for Pakistan to acquire materials and uranium enriching equipment. The Chinese decision to assist Pakistan in developing its civilian nuclear power sector has faced severe censure from Western powers and India. However, the Chinese are determined to further the arrangement and substantial work is in progress. Pakistan intends to install two atomic power plants with a combined capacity of 2,000 MW with Chinese assistance at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant complex to address the country s energy need.

Pakistan and China have also been closely cooperating in the war on terror with the Chinese providing speedy delivery of JF-17 Thunders and other armament to help Pakistan counter this growing threat and Pakistan is effectively aiding China in cracking down on sources of terrorism in its Xinjiang province. Pakistan also supports China on the issues of Tibet and Taiwan.

China is also the major contributor towards the development of the Gwadar port which is essentially important for both countries. It provides Pakistan with another port and its related economic benefits, and presents China with the possibility of accessing the energy rich regions of Middle East and warm waters of the Indian Ocean via Pakistan.

The special bond between Pakistan and China is an all-weather and time tested relationship and extremely beneficial and significant for both the countries. The two countries have provided vital support to each other on various issues and this friendship is bound to prosper in the future.

Innovative Firefighting PVE Showcases its Tender Fire Crash With more than 40 years of experience and 4,000 vehicles delivered nationwide, Pakistan Vehicle Engineering (PVE) is the largest manufacturer of specialized vehicles in Pakistan. Its highly diversified product line caters to five major market segments that include fire and rescue, defense, aviation, municipal and commercial. The company has a state of the art R & D department, which enables it to provide complete turnkey solutions to its clients.

Here at the IDEAS one of PVE s main products in the limelight is the Tender Fire Crash. Tender Fire Crash is the first fully automated fire tender in Pakistan.

Research on the Tender Fire Crash was initiated in 2009 with the goal of providing an optimized fire fighting solution in the country. Development of the prototype was done in merely six months and complete tests and trials were completed within just three months after the production.

In contrast with its closest counterparts, Tender Fire Crash boasts a superior quality of design and functionality. It is equipped with four fire fighting mediums

which are water, foam, CO2 and N2 to ensure complete control over various classes of fire. The vehicle contains a water tank with the capacity of 5,000 liters of water and an integrated foam tank of 500 Liters. Both these tanks have been manufactured from high-grade stainless steel.

Additionally, the world s best fire pump technology from Rosenbeaur has been incorporated in the vehicle by installing the high and low pressure multi stage fire pump which is capable of operating at 3,500 LPM at 10 Bar and 400 LPM at 40 Bar. In order to make it further robust, it has been installed with two joystick controlled monitors within the driver s cabin, one at the roof and the other on the bumper. The Task Force Tips (TFT) monitors ensure highest grade of reliability when in operation with a pulsation option and vertically sliding aluminum shutters allow convenience of a smooth operation. Control panels have been furnished on both right and left sides with a wide range of options for the fire fighter. Tender Fire Crash also features a 240 Kg CFT N2 cylinder with a hose reel and gun, in addition to the 45 KG

CO2 cylinder with hose reel and discharge horn.

The Tender Fire Crash provides high grade of safety for the fire fighters as the necessity of stepping out of the vehicle is immensely reduced due to its joystick operated monitors. Additionally the vehicle can also be engaged in operation while in motion and at a suitable distance.

This way both the safety of personnel and equipment is ensured. This feature also aids in better firefighting efforts as the vehicle can maneuver around the target to ensure an efficient and effective effort. The company also ensures that all its vehicles are kept in operating conditions at all times and a mobile workshop with well versed technicians travels wherever there is a break down or any other operational issue.

Due to its reliability and atomization this vehicle is being used at various air bases in Pakistan. The Tender Fire Crash can undoubtedly be the right solution for tricky fires and rescue situations through which the fire can be extinguished effectively and without putting the fire righter in harm s way.

Pak-Turk Strengthen Defense Ties On 2nd April 1954, Pakistan and Turkey signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation and thus laid the foundation of a reliable and trust worthy relationship.

Turkey has openly supported Pakistan's stance on the Kashmir conflict and maintained political and military support during its wars with India. Pakistan has reciprocated by expressing all out support for Turkey's policy on Northern Cyprus.

The sister countries have substantially contributed towards each otherÂ’s growth and development.

Turkey has actively been involved with training Pakistani officers and supplying military equipment and arms to Pakistan.

Pakistan and Turkey have also pledged to maintain long term cooperation in the fields of security, defense, and education. Besides increased trade and investment in Pakistan, Turkey has helped Pakistan during calamities like the 2005-earthquake and 2011floods and has immensely cooperated in counter terrorism operations.

Although an elaborate framework of cooperation in defense production, defense imports/exports, military training, joint defense exercises and strategic level dialogues exists, both countries have always worked to improve their relations and take it to exceptional heights through enhanced cooperation in a range of areas, including defense.

Pakistan and Turkey have had HLCC (High Level Cooperation Council) meetings and Turkey has offered military hardware and assistance in infrastructure building. The HLCC is especially useful to steer this unique partnership and aids in furthering cooperation between the two allies. With the Pakistani side following the strategy of formulating strong defense industrial relations with predominantly Muslim countries, the already sound partnership is heading towards greater heights. Significantly, both the allies also wish to boost defense

exports to Islamic countries as an alternate to expensive Western technology.

Recent defense ventures between the two countries have focused on the development of tactical unmanned aerial vehicles. Furthermore, Turkey has upgraded Pakistan's F-16 fighter aircraft and supplied the country with Kaan-33 fast attack craft, AH-1F/S Cobra attack helicopter parts and artillery simulators.

On their part, Pakistan has played a major role in the substantial expansion of Beijing Ankara Military-Industrial collaboration over the last seventeen years.

Additionally, when under US criticism for human rights abuses against Kurds using

US supplied weapons, all weapon sales and military technology transfers to Turkey were restricted and all grants and loans earlier offered were cut off; Pakistan facilitated Turkish-China cooperation to fill the void. Turkey was then provided all essential military support by China and Turkey responded by aiding China in their fighting against terrorist Uyghur nationalist organizations and their leaders.

Recently talks held between the military and defence officials and counterparts from Pakistan and Turkey elaborated on how to enhance collaboration in defense development and production activities.

During the eighth Pakistan-Turkey "highlevel military dialogue group meeting" the two countries agreed to boost defense

industrial cooperation through partnership and joint ventures.

They also agreed to establish two working groups under the existing bilateral forum to explore opportunities for further collaboration in military and defense industrial activities.

Furthermore, Turkey joined Pakistan, China and six other countries in the region to make joint efforts for the development of space technology. This was a big breakthrough in strengthening regional cooperation for peaceful use of outer space. Pakistan and China played a pioneering role in establishing the organization, first of its kind to expand and intensify cooperation in space activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Also both countries are supporting mutual research and development for 3D surveillance radar technologies, Fire control radars, Warhead links, Rocket engines and rocket fuels for air defence missiles, etc. industry has significant production capacity in armored personnel carriers, unmanned aerial vehicles and sea vessels. Turkey would start production of attack helicopters by 2013, which adds to further possibilities of defence cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan has contributed with supply of small arms ammunition and other munitions and both countries are actively exploring the possibility of developing an advanced fighter jet on the lines of the JF-17 that resulted through joint efforts of Pakistan and China. Talks are underway for the co-production of weapons like armored vehicles and new generation corvettes.

Military to military contacts between Ankara and Islamabad have been unflinching and both countries are looking to further their already strong special relationship and jointly build a road to each otherÂ’s progression.
