IDEAS 2012 Sideline Conferences The second day of IDEAS 2012 marked the occurrence of Sideline Conferences, a segment divided into four sessions.

First session was about Pakistan s Success During War on Terror, which brought officials as speakers from tri forces. Major General Nasrullah Tahir Dogar and nominated officers from Pakistan Air Force and Navy described the role, contribution, and overall strategy of Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.

Major General Ghulam Qamar, GOC 19th Infantry Division, discussed the Swat case as a success story. The second session focused on Asymmetric Threat and Response, where esteemed orators like Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Defence & Defence Production, Air Commodore Peter Round, Capability Director at European Union/European Defence Agency, and Mr. David Moonen, C4I Communications Consultant

expressed their thoughts and views.

Talking on Pakistan & Challenges of a Changing Regional Scenario Senator Mushahid Hussain said that Pakistan is facing several challenges while bringing peace in the region. He stated, Pakistan might be unstable at political level and corruption also prevails in the country, but at the society level, vigor and dynamism can be found.

While speaking about the European Union defence agency Air commodore Peter Round said, EDA believes in providing better capabilities with minimum resources, giving a message to the audience about how with minimum resources capabilities can be improved.

Mr. David Moonen continued the session by delivering information on the significance of Creating Secure and Independent Telecommunications in Military Deployed Areas. The third session was about Preparing For the

Unknown Quick and Effective Emergency Response From the tri Services, which brought Lt General (Retd) Nadeem Ahmed, Ex-Chairman National Disaster Management Authority, Lt. General P. K (Ken) Keen, Commander, Office of the Defence Representative to Pakistan (ODRP), Mr. Metin Doner, Business Development Manager as key speakers. In the fourth session, Shazadi Beg, British Barrister and Major General (Retd) Athar Abbas, Ex- Director General of Inter Services Public Relations Directorate talked about the increased role of Armed Forces in nation building and defeating militancy through development.

Each session was followed by a panel discussion that facilitated interaction between the participants and speakers, benefitting international delegates and officials.

Minister for Defence Production attends IDEAS 2012 as Chief Guest of the Day Sardar Bahadur Khan, Federal Minister for Defence Production visited IDEAS 2012 on day two as the chief guest of the day. He visited various booths and exchanged his thoughts with various officials and delegations from different countries. Speaking to the media he stated, Weapons aren t just produced for the utilization in war but in present times the main purpose is to utilize them

for the peace and prosperity of a nation.

He further expressed his views by adding, Exhibitions like IDEAS 2012 are held to promote peace globally and fight the war against terrorism. Talking about Pakistan s role in the global peace he added, Pakistan believes in global peace and is actively involved in war against terrorism as we as a nation do not believe in damaging any other

nation and expect the same from the rest of the world.

The chief guest visited various halls and booths where different countries were showcasing their products and briefing the audience about their expertise and ties with Pakistan in relations specific to Pakistan s Defence.

IDEAS and POF: Alliance for a Stronger Pakistan With rapid changes in the global security scenario, governments and security forces are devising and implementing strategies for a secure world to keep pace with the latest developments in the defence sector and also establish peace and security in the international security situation.

As an effect to POF s regular participation, the precision and reliability of POF s arms and ammunition have led to the creation of a growing demand in international market within a period of six decades;

with clientele spread over 40 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.

Today POF is imbued with a deep drive to serve the cause of peace and stability and international defence expos like these, serve as an excellent platform for the introductions of new defence products helping firms establish prowess and lure new buyers to their doorstep.

HIT and Norinco Sign MoU for Al-Khalid Tank Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), Pakistan and Norinco Corporation, China signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday at IDEAS 2012. According to it, the two companies will be working for the Joint marketing of Al-Khalid tank and various other products. The MoU is based on Transfer of Technology (ToT) and is a result of joint Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the two nations.

Briefing on the MoU, Brigadier Ghulam Murtaza, Director Budget Marketing and Procurement for HIT industries, said that the joint marketing venture between the two countries is taking place for the first time. The primary focus will be on AlKhalid Tank which was developed jointly with China in the 90 s and is being used by the Pakistan Army. The two companies have been working together on this

project ever since.

Brig. Murtaza said the product has been marketed internationally by China but the new contract will allow Pakistan to pursue marketing initiatives internationally as well. He further added that the two companies will also be working on various other products including security equipments and security vehicles.

Emerging Trends in Pakistani Defence Industry With contemporary warfare changing as we speak, all defense related institutions are arming themselves to cope with these rapidly changing tides. With a value of US$6.3 billion in 2009 the Pakistani defense industry is anticipated to reach US$10.4 billion by 2015. This is due to large scale investments to cope up with increased internal instability and its active participation in the war on terror. Experts predict that these factors will continue to drive Pakistani defense expenditures even further in the future, making it one of the most thriving industries of Pakistan.

Consequently, the Pakistani defense industry is undergoing dramatic changes and seeing many new inclinations.

Modifications being seen are concentrated efforts towards making the industry as high tech as possible. New technological advancements are being undertaken by all major players in the industry.

In this endeavor, there is a lot of attention towards products that are redefining human limits by the aid of machines. Machines that are capable of taking over many tasks that are tedious or impossible for the combatant, thereby increasing security and efficiency.

Pakistan too, has been making efforts to boost itself in this regard and a vivid lean of attention can be seen towards the development of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sector. These companies which are over 100 in number have molded themselves to meet the developing requirements of the local military, as well as avail export opportunities to military and civilian sectors alike. Due to this they have been successful in capturing and utilizing a niche market and contribute towards its own growth and that of the Pakistani

defense industry.

Apart from ID some of the other leading companies in this regard are Al-Sons Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Saturma and East West Infinity (EWI). The public sector giants too are also prospering well and have developed products that are gaining international commendation and rising popularity. The respective companies are working on producing quality products that are in every way at par with international standards but with concentration on keeping them economical. Among these is PAC Kamra; an aviation industry of Pakistan comprising of four factories. Major products of the industry are aircraft, aero engines, and spares development. It is also the leader in producing several aircrafts that are highly economical and fully integrated with state of the art

systems on board like fighter planes, jet trainers and primary trainers and utility aircrafts, which have already proven credibility of its various features and equipment on board. Present at IDEAS2012 there will be many such trending products.

Pakistan has also come a long way from being dependent for sophisticated weapons on imports, to becoming a major player in the world arms industry. The leading company in this regard is the Pakistan Ordinance Factories (POF).

Being Pakistan s premier arms and ammunition manufacturing facility it serves the defense requirements of the country s armed forces, and caters to the needs of domestic and export markets. It produces seventy major products including automatic rifles, light/medium and heavy machine guns, a wide range of mortar and artillery ammunition, aircraft and anti craft ammunition, tank and anti tank ammunition, bombs, grenades, landmines, pyrotechnics and signals stores. Amongst its flourishing trends is the development of purpose made weapons to fulfill specific requirements of arms forces of Pakistan.

An example of this is the POF EYE a special purpose hand-held weapons system that can engage targets around corners in built up areas and hostage situations.

Owing to these rising trends and massive leaps of developments in the Pakistani Defense Industry, Pakistan's defense exports have tripled to around $300 million all due to high quality products priced perfectly to suit the pockets of the buyers. In short becoming high-tech, fostering self reliability, curtailing dependence on foreign manufacturers and boosting exports is the key goal behind all prevailing trends in the Pakistani Defense Industry.

Products of the Day Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft (Hürkus) Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc (TAI) ranks among the top hundred global players in the aerospace and defence arena. The Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft also known as (Hürkus) has been developed by the Turkish Airforce and engineers and is named after Vecihi Hürkus, a Turkish aviation pioneer and the first Turkish airplane manufacturer and is expected to be launched by the end of 2013. Within the framework of the program; two aircraft configurations have been developed. The basic version is certified by EASA according to CS-23 requirements and the advanced version includes integrated avionics. The aircraft has a higher g-limit of +7/ -3,5g which helps in the better training of the pilot. The cockpit has a capacity for seating two people which includes an instructor and the pilot with a good visibility of 50 down-view angle.

It also has a 1,600 shp PT6A-68T Pratt & Whitney Canada turboprop engine.

The total take off and landing distances

are 1605ft (489m) and 1945ft (593m) respectively. The main purpose of Hürkus is to be equipped for day and night flying as well as basic pilot training, instrument flying, navigation training, weapons and formation training.

Security Vehicle Muhafiz III With a water cooled Turbo-Diesel intercooled, 8 cylinder and 150KW (200HP) at 3400rpm, The Muhafiz-III is a 4x4 security vehicle designed and manufactured at Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) in Pakistan. It provides the occupants with protection from small arms fire up to 7.62x51, M 80 NATO P-80, M61 AP ammunition and tested to meet N.I.J Standard 0108-1 Level IV and CEN EURO NORM 1063 B-7. The flat tyres meet the NATO/Finabel speed and distance standard of 50km at 50km/hr. It also includes the running board and hand rail system to provide quick extraction of pedestrian personnel without entering the vehicle. It also offers a vertical rack(s) for a total of 6 full stocks of AK-47 rifles.

The weight of the vehicle is 5000lbs

(2268kgs) and includes 3 doors (2 front and 1 rear). The turret has a demountable seat with a minimum of 14 height with hatch cover; 360 degree rotation and adaptable for LMF installation.

Multiband Networking Radio RF7800M-MP This radio is brought forth by HARRIS, a USA based company, which specializes in producing secured tactical military communication systems. It enhances the communication as well as transfer and sharing of data between the soldiers at h i g h s p e e d . I t i s a n e ff e c t i v e communication tool as it enables communication up to 18-20 kilometers and also allows radio transmission across four outstations. The unique feature of this radio is that it is equipped with jamming-free characteristic and has buildin security, thus making the flow of communication more secure and pure of anyone s interference. It carries power of 10 watts; however with a power amplifier attached it can be enhanced to 50 watts.

Chinese Air Defense Missile Weapon System Showed in Pakistan China Aerospace Long-march International Trade Co. Ltd. (ALIT) is showing its medium-short range air defense solution including LY-80,LY60D,FB-6A,FN-16,FN-6 missile weapon systems at IDEAS 2012. Out of all its munitions, special focus is being given to LY-80 which is regarded as a new generation air defense weapon system of China. LY-80 is a medium range air defense missile weapon system with 40km maximum interception range. It is based on various a d v a n c e d technologies of intermittent illumination semiactive radar h o m i n g guidance, phased array radar, vertical cold launch and r a d i o communication network.

The weapon system is characterized by strong multiple t a r g e t engagement, good ECCM and cross-country maneuverability capabilities. It can intercept such air targets as high-performance combat aircrafts, cruise missiles, air-toground missiles and armed helicopters in saturation air attack and strong electromagnetic interference at day and night.

LY-80 missile weapon system is composed of combat equipment and technical support equipment. Combat equipment consists of searching vehicle, command vehicle, guidance vehicle, missile firing vehicle and missile-in-tube.

Technical support equipment includes missile transportation and loading vehicle, power supply vehicle, maintenance vehicle and missile test equipment.

Normally, one air defense firing unit is comprised by one searching vehicle,

three guidance vehicles and twelve firing vehicles. One command vehicle can be applied to command and coordinate up to firing units.

The Single Shot Kill Probability (SSKP) of LY-80 is not less than 0.85 against aircraft targets and not less than 0.60 against missile targets. In an airspace, each fire unit can command and guide 8 missiles to engage 4 targets simultaneously. With maximally 6 fire units allocated, the weapon system can

engage 24 targets at the same time.

LY-80 can operate normally in windy and sandy region, dry, humid or salty conditions at the altitude up to 3000m, and the system can operate in the temperature of -40 to 50 degree Celsius.

When the system sets on the storage mode, it can cope with the temperature from -50 to 70 degree Celsius.

Additionally, LY-60D is an air defense missile weapon system of medium and low altitude and medium and short range.

It can intercept multi-batch air targets such as cruise missile, airplanes and airto-ground missile from all directions with 0.03~12km interception altitude and 1~18km slant range. The systemÂ’s depth

of ultra-low-altitude interception zone is large, and can track 60 targets and fire 4 targets simultaneously. When the target is a cruise missile with the terminal velocity of 360m/s and range of 10km, it can be intercepted by LY-60D twice.

When the target is an airplane with the velocity of 250m/s and range of 18km, it can be intercepted four times by the system.

LY-60D can be deployed in air defense for vital places and field operations and can operate independently or coordinately with other systems.

LY-60D missile weapon system has three kinds of external interfaces i n c l u d i n g Ethernet, RS232 serial interface and audio. It can transmit and share air situation information from s u p e r i o r command center, close friend radar t r o o ps , c l o s e friend air defense troops and local level long range early warning radar. Therefore, the weapon system can achieve both independent combat and coordinative combat by joining in domestic air defense intelligence network, receiving superior command and exchanging air situation information with close friend air defense troops.

ALIT provides FN-6/16 portable air defense missile system and FB-6A mobile air defense missile system. These systems can cooperate with LY series SAM to fulfill various air defense missions.

All of these products can construct an integrity air defense weapon system with different choices according to specific requirements.
