ABOUT ME I’m Vishweshwara Sundar, but you can simply call me Vishwa. I’m a passionate photographer from the southern part of India, specifically Tamil Nadu. My work primarily focuses on portrait and film photography. I currently shoot with a Canon EOS R, and my favorite lens is the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8. I truly believe that this focal length allows me to craft compelling narratives and express creativity in every shot. I’m always eager to connect with innovative and creative minds who share a passion for bringing new ideas to life.

MY JOURNEY IN PHOTOGRAPHY 2017 - PRESENT I began my photography journey in 2017, and it has been an exciting and fulfilling experience ever since. Although I am professionally an architect, photography has always been my true passion. Over the years, I have honed my skills and transformed this passion into a thriving business. In India, I run my own photography brand called ROLL BY VISHIS, which offers a wide range of photography services. My work spans across various genres, including wedding photography, fashion shoots, architectural photography and baby portraits. Balancing architecture and photography has given me a unique perspective, allowing me to incorporate design principles, aesthetics, and storytelling into every frame.

CREATIVE PORTRAITS Creative Photography is a broad and exciting genre that encourages photographers to push the boundaries of traditional photographic techniques and explore new ways of capturing the world around them. It involves using imagination, artistry, and innovative techniques to transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary images. Creative photography allows for the expression of personal style and vision while experimenting with different concepts, angles, lighting, and post-processing.

IMMERSED IN A VOID

The concept behind this image is of a girl immersed in a void, capturing an ethereal and surreal mood. I created this shot in a studio setting in Chennai, where I carefully crafted every aspect to bring the vision. The lighting setup involved using the Godox SA P1 projection for creating dramatic light effects, along with two continuous lights from the Godox SL 200 for even illumination. A tripod and camera were essential to ensure stability and precision throughout the shoot. Before the shoot, I put a lot of thought into the mood board, which helped shape the overall visual direction of the project. I also carefully selected the costumes to ensure they complemented the atmosphere I was trying to evoke. My goal was to capture the exact expression I envisioned for the subject, so I focused on guiding the model’s emotions and ensuring that her expression reflected the void-like, contemplative essence I wanted to portray in the final image.

The concept for this shoot centers around the symbolic use of black balloons, which represent societal constraints that hold a person back. These balloons convey the notion that despite possessing vibrant dreams, symbolized by the model’s red, colorful dress, the weight of societal expectations prevents her from soaring to greater heights. This idea stemmed from my personal reflections and observations of the many girls in India who are often limited and suppressed by societal pressures. To capture the best natural lighting, my assistants and I arrived at the beach at 5:00 AM to ensure we could shoot during the golden hour. We began the laborious task of inflating nearly 50 black balloons, which left us feeling exhausted but determined. Once the model arrived, we began the shoot at 6:30 AM, and after all the effort and careful setup, we were able to create this powerful, emotive image. The result was a poignant visual statement on the contrast between dreams and societal limitations, perfectly captured in that fleeting golden-hour light.

HOPE AND TRUST

The concept for this shoot revolves around the symbolism of blindfolds, illustrating how a person is metaphorically “tied up” by external constraints. The subject is draped in a white dupatta and dressed in a full white costume, symbolizing purity and vulnerability. The backdrop features cactus plants, a representation of resilience and endurance in harsh environments. In the first image, the model is shown in a state of search, symbolizing a person striving to find their purpose or goals despite the limitations they face. The second image shifts to a more empowered stance, where the model stands confidently in front of the cactus. This imagery conveys that individuals with a strong will can overcome challenges and achieve their goals, no matter the obstacles in their way. To create this image, I used a white shirt, white pants, and a white dupatta for the model, which helped reinforce the theme of purity and vulnerability. For the shoot, I employed three lenses: a 35mm, a 16mm, and an 85mm, each chosen to capture different perspectives and highlight the details of the model and the cactus. The images were further refined during post-production using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance the lighting, contrast, and overall mood, ensuring the final photographs conveyed the intended message of hope, resilience, and strength.

The concept “Far from Reality” The use of green and yellow tones to symbolize happiness and hope contrasts powerfully with the idea of people avoiding reality and struggling with emotional chaos. The foggy effect created with the smoke machine adds an ethereal, dream-like atmosphere, enhancing the sense of disconnection. The LED lights in the background likely contribute subtle glows, adding depth, while the Godox 500R light on the subject’s face brings focus, making the emotions stand out.

The saree is often styled in diverse ways depending on regional customs, and the photography aims to highlight its intricate details and vibrant colors.

Captured this image in London for GK Boutique, using a creative lighting setup to enhance the visual appeal. To achieve a soft, even illumination, I used two ring lights positioned strategically around the subject. Additionally, I incorporated a half-white lamp to introduce a warm, yellow hue, adding a unique tone to the image. To further elevate the composition, I placed a lehenga dupatta in front of the lens, creating a beautiful bokeh effect that softened the background and added a dynamic, blurred texture. The result was a striking, vibrant image with rich colors and a soft diffusion straight from the camera. After the shoot, I carefully enhanced the image in Photoshop and Lightroom, where I refined the colors, contrast, and details to bring out the best in the shot and ensure it aligned with the designer’s vision. The result is a polished and professional image that highlights both the design and the mood of the shoot.

For my outdoor commercial lehenga shoot, I utilized the Godox AD600 Pro and AD200 Pro as the primary lighting sources to achieve balance in natural settings. Prior to the shoot, I made it a point to visit the location in advance. This helped me analyze the natural light, explore creative angles, and plan the framing of each shot. Visualizing the composition beforehand allowed me to align the lighting setup and model poses seamlessly with the environment.This thoughtful planning and professional lighting setup have consistently helped me capture the elegance and richness of lehengas, making each shoot visually compelling and brand-focused.

This shoot was created for saree promotion, with the concept of featuring two girls to convey the themes of elegance. The shot was taken with an 85mm lens at f/1.8 aperture to achieve a soft, blurred background while focusing on the models’ serene expressions and the beauty of the saree.

This shoot took place in Karaikudi, at the Chettinad Palace in Tamil Nadu, India. The picture was captured while the model was seated on a chair, evoking a vintage look with retro-style coloring. Through her expression, the image reflects how our heritage is gradually modernizing with time.

This shot was taken on ECR, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, with the theme of a girl embracing and connecting with nature. The picture shows her immersed in the natural surroundings, conveying a sense of peace and harmony with the environment.

This photo was captured in London, utilizing streetlights as background illumination and a Godox 500R external light source to highlight the subject’s face. The remaining enhancements were completed in Photoshop and Lightroom.

In this shot, I positioned my subject behind a mirror, blending the café’s ambient lighting as the background and using a Godox M1 RGB light for facial illumination. I used a 35mm lens with a wide f/1.8 aperture to create depth and achieve a subtle light leak effect.

This photoshoot was done for the model’s portfolio. No specific lighting was used; instead, I positioned the model in an area with ample artifical light to illuminate him. I carefully selected a spot that allowed me to achieve depth and a dark-toned effect in the background.

WIDE PORTRAITS Wide portraits are my favorite style of photography because they evoke a cinematic, film-like quality. This approach allows me to not only focus on the subject but also capture the surrounding environment, creating a deeper connection between the subject and the background. The inclusion of the setting adds context, mood, and storytelling elements to the image, making it feel more immersive and authentic.

FESTIVALS

HOLI PORTRAITS Holi photography captures the vibrant, joyful spirit of the Holi festival, also known as the Festival of Colors. This celebration, deeply rooted in Indian culture, is a riot of color, music, and dance, and is celebrated with enthusiasm across the world. THROUGH MY LENS OF STORYTELLING : Since my childhood, I have always been captivated by the vibrant joy and explosion of colors during the Holi festival. From 2021 to 2024, I made it a tradition to attend the Holi festivities in Sowcarpet, Chennai, a place known for its lively and energetic celebrations. I used my Canon EOS R paired with a 35mm f/1.8 lens, a combination that allowed me to capture sharp and vibrant images with beautiful depth of field. To protect my gear from water balloons and splashes, I carefully wrapped the camera and lens in a plastic cover, ensuring that I could shoot freely without worrying about damage. This experience allowed me to truly connect with the spirit of Holi and capture authentic, powerful moments that reflect the festival’s joy and vibrancy.

CHITHIRAI FESTIVAL Chithirai Thiruvila is an important cultural and religious celebration in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, marking the arrival of the Tamil New Year and celebrating the divine marriage of Lord Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. This festival is one of the most significant in Madurai, and it attracts thousands of devotees and tourists from all over the world. The festival takes place during the Chithirai month in the Tamil calendar, which usually falls in April or May. The Meenakshi Temple, a historic temple in Madurai, is the central focus of the festival. THROUGH MY LENS OF STORYTELLING : From 2017 to 2024, I consistently attended the Chithirai Thiruvizha, In the initial years, I immersed myself in the crowd, walking alongside the devotees to capture the festival’s raw energy and authenticity. However, I soon realized the need for a safer and more strategic approach to protect my gear while still capturing compelling shots.Finding the perfect vantage point allowed me to photograph the festival in a way that highlighted both the grandeur of the event and the emotions of the participants.

JALLIKATTU Jallikattu is a traditional and ancient bull-taming sport that is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and other parts of Tamil Nadu and South India. It is an integral part of the Pongal festival, which is the Tamil harvest festival, and is conducted primarily during the Tamil month of Thai (mid-January to mid-February). Madurai, being one of the prominent regions in Tamil Nadu, is known for its passionate celebration of Jallikattu. Historically, it was practiced as a means of showcasing strength and courage, with the bulls being awarded to those who successfully tamed them. THROUGH MY LENS OF STORYTELLING : From 2018 to 2024, I made it a point to attend Jallikattu,Initially, photographers were only allowed in certain zones, typically restricted to the reporters’ area. I discovered a hidden spot just beneath the reporters’ section, where I crawled under the wooden stage to find a unique vantage point. This location, directly opposite the Vadi Vasai (the entrance gate for the bulls), From this spot, I was able to shoot with a low angle, allowing me to capture the powerful movements of the bulls and the adrenaline-fueled action in a way that few others could. This perspective provided stunning, dynamic shots that truly reflected the intensity and spirit of Jallikattu.

JEWELLERY PRODUCTS

Focuses on capturing the intricate details and beauty of jewelry pieces in the most flattering way. The goal is to highlight the craftsmanship, shine, and design of the jewelry while keeping the images clean and appealing for potential buyers. Jewelry photography requires attention to detail, as the pieces are often small and reflective, which can make lighting and composition particularly challenging.

THROUGH MY LENS : For my jewelry product shoots, I used a combination of two Godox SL 200 lights and two Godox LC 500R lights, which provided the perfect balance of soft and dynamic lighting to highlight the intricate details of each piece. The primary camera setup I used was the Canon EOS R, paired with a Sigma 24-70mm lens and a Canon 35mm macro lens. One of the key elements in my shoots was the creation of custom backdrops. ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY Architectural photography is a specialized form of photography that focuses on capturing the design, structure, and aesthetic elements of buildings and spaces. This type of photography requires a deep understanding of both architecture and photography techniques to highlight the beauty, functionality, and details of a structure in a visually compelling way. Key elements of architectural photography include: Composition, Lighting, Perspective Control, Exterior vs. Interior focus, Post-Processing, Context and Environment Storytelling. THROUGH MY LENS : I rely on the Canon EOS R paired with the Canon RF 15-35mm lens, which offers a wide focal range. I set the aperture to f/16 or the maximum setting. This allows me to achieve a deep depth of field, ensuring that both the foreground and background are in perfect focus, which is crucial when photographing buildings, interiors, or architectural features. I also use a tripod to ensure stability and avoid any camera shake, especially during long exposure shots.

WEDDINGS For weddings, I typically use a combination of Canon EOS R and Canon EOS R6 M2 and lenses such as the Canon 16mm f/2.8 , Canon 35mm f/1.8 , Canon 50mm f/1.8, Canon 85mm f/1.8 for portraits and Sigma 2470mm f/2.8 for versatility during ceremony and reception shots.

In post-production, I emphasize the colors and textures to maintain the authenticity of the event, enhancing the images in Lightroom for color correction and Photoshop for any finer adjustments. I aim to create timeless images that not only preserve the beauty of the wedding day but also encapsulate the joy, love, and memories that the couple will cherish for a lifetime.

PRE & POST WEDDING I often choose locations that hold meaning to the couple whether it’s a park, beach, or urban setting allowing for natural and candid moments. I use a mix of natural light and flash (if needed) to highlight the couple and create a soft, romantic ambiance. The key to a successful pre-wedding or post wedding shoot is making the couple feel comfortable and allowing their emotions to flow naturally.

BABY PHOTOSHOOT I always aim for a calm and comfortable environment. This often means shooting indoors with soft, diffused natural light, which creates a warm, gentle glow. I typically use large windows to let in soft daylight, but I may also use a reflector or a softbox to ensure even lighting. The goal is to avoid harsh shadows and create a flattering look for the baby’s delicate skin.

BLACK & WHITE AESTHETThe artistic use of monochromatic color schemes, focusing solely on shades of black, white, and all the gradients of gray in between. This aesthetic has a timeless appeal and is often used in photography, film, graphic design, art, and even architecture to emphasize form, contrast, mood, and texture.

MY FILMMAKING JOURNEY I have been actively working as a cinematographer from 2020 to the present. I am skilled in operating fullframe cameras and Blackmagic cameras, both of which I have extensively used in my projects. Additionally, I have hands-on experience in handling lighting setups and various filmmaking equipment. I am proficient in scene composition and positioning, ensuring that each frame aligns with the narrative. I also create detailed storyboards to effectively visualize and plan the movie scenes.

MY PROJECTS As a cinematographer, I have had the opportunity to work on two pilot films, three short films, and three music albums. My work has been recognized with awards for one of the pilot films and one short film at prestigious film festivals held in Mumbai and Chennai. Additionally, both pilot films were screened in theaters for a limited period, providing valuable exposure and experience in the industry.

I initially struggled while creating my first music video due to the ideas for producing an album song. However, by the time I worked on the next two videos, I gained valuable insights and developed creative strategies and techniques.
