T

his is one time of the year I am glad for lots of rain, why you may ask? It helps wash away all the salt, sand and gravel off the roads! Pretty soon, I will not have to wash the underbelly every time I get home from a drive.

I can report that Black Rock 2017 is as popular as ever!

I have heard that the event booked up within the first few hours. Don't get down if you still have not registered, there is a wait-list that gets cycled through before Black Rock starts.

The 62nd Annual Porsche Parade Registration has started. This is one event you do not want to miss as Parade this year is close to home in Spokane, Washington! There are events for young and old all week long, with thousands of PCA members attending, there will be lots of Porsches to see!

Our Mid-Island Director, Dean Aikenhead, has some exciting events planned - a Tech Night in Nanaimo and a Tour of Salt Spring Island, so stay tuned for more info.

I would also like to share some details of changes coming to Zone 6. It is one of the biggest geographic PCA zones stretching from Vancouver Island to Saskatchewan, down to Wyoming and back to Oregon. That is a lot of distance for one zone rep to travel. With the agreement of Zone 6 presidents, PCA will be splitting Zone 6 East to West. The new border will follow the B.C / Alberta border down following the Idaho / Montana state line. More information will be coming in the following months.

his month I have started a Discount page where we list the discounts that companies provide to members of the PCA. We shall get the list up on the website too so it will be easy to refer to if you are out and about looking for something.

The discount list may be small currently, but with your help it can grow. If you have received a discount from anywhere that you believe would be applicable to others in the club, please let me know via email to my address on page 3 and we shall get it added to this list.

The picture is my wife and I on the Scoot City tour from Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon a few years ago. It’s a blast riding the scooters through the park there. Hey, it’s not a Porsche, but nearly as much fun! Johnny from Scoot City is giving members 20% off during 2017.

From our total membership, two club members - Bridget Cassidy (North Saanich) and Mark Hoole (Victoria) - were drawn at random and each will receive one of the club’s 20th anniversary banners. The draw was announced at the Valentines luncheon held on Sunday February 12th at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

We are Among the Fastest Growing PCA Regions The final results are in from PCA head office. VIRPCA was the fourth fastest growing club in 2016, taking population size and other factors into account. In terms of numbers, the largest increase was reported by Gold Coast Region in South Florida. They are a region of 2,300 members and increased by 145 (6%). Vancouver Island’s rate of increase in 2016 was 16%. Thank you to the class of 2016. We look forward to seeing you on the road, at the track and at our social events.

Size Matters…as does Quality Membership growth is a very important indicator for the Board. Not only is there a National Trophy and prize of $US 500 at stake but as we grow we become eligible for additional grants from PCA and these funds are returned to you the members in subsidies, prizes and awards.

Growing our membership will always be secondary to improving the quality of the member experience. That said, the Board is keen to hear your ideas about how to attract new members and what kind of Porsche events appeal to you. Porsche Pork Ragu Here is another recipe submitted by Mid-Island Wipe out any burned bits from pot, but leave the Director Dean Aikenhead. It is for Pork Ragù golden-brown pieces (doing this will keep the finOver Creamy Polenta Sauce (for 8) ished sauce from tasting bitter). Add onion and

garlic to pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is starting to brown and caramelize, 12–15 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly darkened in color, 5–8 minutes.

Add wine and cook, scraping up any browned bits, until reduced by about half, 5–8 minutes.

Add tomatoes, crushing with your hands as you go, then add thyme, rosemary, and bay leaves; stir in 2 cups water. Add pork with any juices accumulated on the platter; season with salt and pepper.

Bring liquid to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, until pork is falling-apart tender, sauce is thickened (it will be thicker than INGREDIENTS a typical pasta sauce), and flavors have melded, 3 pounds skinless, boneless pork shoulder 2½ – 3 hours.

1/4 cup unsalted butter Add butter and ½ cup Parmesan to polenta and 1/2 cup grated Parmesan (from about 2 ounc- whisk until melted; season with salt and pepper. es), plus more for serving Freshly ground black pepper Spoon polenta into bowls or onto a platter and 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley top with pork. Scatter parsley and more ParmeOlive oil (for drizzling) san over top and drizzle with oil.

Heat oil in a Fiber 3g, Total Sugars 4g, Protein 38g, Sodium large heavy pot over medium heat. Cook pork, 390mg turning often, until evenly browned, 10–12 minutes. Transfer to a platter and pour off pan Bon appétit ! drippings.

Books: The Autobiography of 917-023

I

thought Porsche racing fans may like this 320 page book which is published by UK company Porter Press International, that publish a wide range of motoring books.

The price is above average at £60 (CA$100) for the standard signed edition, and £250 for the De Luxe edition, plus S&H.

Valentine’s Day Lunch ere are some pictures of the Valentine’s Day Lunch held on February 12th at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club organised by Club VP James Renfrew. 22 people attended and the ladies received roses courtesy of the club. James says that some feedback from the attendees was for a buffet style next year rather than menu orders, so we shall consider that.

Klaus’ Thunderbird 2017 Rally Report Background: The Thunderbird is a winter driving adventure, round 1 of the 2017 BC TSD Rally Championship, and round 1 of the Pacific Coast Challenge. The rally follows the current BC TSD Rally Regulations.

(TSD = Time Speed Distance). It runs under straight forward instructions with provided maps. The rally is about 800km, entirely within the province of BC and starts with an odometer check section of about 15km.

Roads will be about 60% snow-covered pavement with the remainder being clear pavement and some gravel.

This is my second Thunderbird and certainly not my last. It's a lot of fun and a great way to compete in a motorsport event. There were 6 stages on Saturday Feb 4 and 4 on Sunday Feb 5. A maximum of 60 entries can be accepted—this year we had 38 on the entry list. The car is a 1985 944. See www.rallybc.com for rally information.

gainst a backdrop of lots of snow, the week-end approached. I picked up Peter Juergenson at 09:20 and pulled away from his place with a nice wheel-spin and slide on the snow covered roads.

Relaxed buffet lunch on the ferry and then on the way to Hope. Snow all along the way. The “lots” of snow would soon turn out to be “LOTS” of snow…. We had to adjust our speeds as the Coquihala was quite snowy at times.

The “Plow” – given the conditions, Checked in at the Merritt hotel and the car and tyres performed very ready for the 7pm rally registration well. and scrutineering. Got that all done and picked up the route book. We were issued number 21. I was hoping for lower, but as it turned out we were VERY happy that 20 cars were ahead of us to plow the roads!!!!

Went off to the pub for dinner and then did the maths/timing for the routes until 23:30! At least with a 10:45 start we did not have to get up at sparrows….

Some last minutes stuff during the drivers briefing – correction of times errors in the book – which we of course found out the previous night.

Start of stage 1 and we could not pull away on the incline… so I backed down to the cattle gate and used that for traction to get going. Wonderful road through the mountains, but also LOTS and LOTS of snow. Most stages were like that and I was generally going as fast as I could without going into the snowbanks – we approached this from a survival mode! We left the snow banks for others – which they sure hit! That meant we could not maintain the given pace and our scoring reflected accordingly. As a stage progressed we picked up more points for being cumulatively later.

There were 6 stages on day 1 and by the end of stage 5 we were both tired and took the straight route to the hotel in Kelowna. Our fellow competitors thought this was a good call as stage 6 had a HUGE amount of snow and everyone struggled.

For our efforts we earnt 2,874 demerit points and placed second – from the end (not counting DNF’s).

Day 2 saw us line up early for 4 more stages. We generally kept it on the road, but went plowing once or twice with snow flying over the car. After one such “significant” event the car started getting warmer – close to overheating at minus 14 degrees ambient temperature! We had managed to plug up the entire front of the car and all air inlets to the radiator were closed. The two electric radiators fans kept things in check, but only just. We barely had 5 minutes to clear the radiator, have a drink and start the next stage. By the time we got to the final stage the team (Peter and I) had “gelled” on the navigation. A plowed gravel road, combined with lots of sliding kept us on time for the first half of the stage, only loosing 51 secs on the latter part due to heavy snow. I got lots of practice steering with the throttle… it’s actually quite a delicate art on the slippery roads……!!!

Here are the detailed scores for the last stage (our best stage): Check 1: 0.1 seconds late (must be our best score EVER!) Check 2: 7.1 seconds late Check 3: 13.1 seconds early Check 4: 8.3 seconds late Check 5: 51.3 seconds late (deep snow) We then called ahead to Main Time Control to check in after the stage and check out of the rally.

That allowed us to head straight back to the ferries and make the 7pm sailing.

For our efforts, day 2 demerit points were “only” 1,181. We ended up in a “solid” second from last position (without going off!) and ahead of 8 DNF’s.

Flashing 3rd Brake Light Install

I

recently stumbled upon the Kahtec blinking smart stop with delay. The smart stop with delay will make your Center High Mounted Brake Light (3rd brake light) flash six times then come on solid.

With the delay version you must have your foot off the brake for eight seconds before your brake light will flash again.

Why would you want this? Mercedes have done studies and found cars with a flashing 3rd brake light decreases the reaction time (of drivers behind). Money well spent, if it reduces the risk of somebody rear-ending me!

This install was done on my 2003 Boxster S but should be similar with any vehicle.

Tools Needed :- Pliers, cutting tool, electricians tape and double-sided tape.

Time :- 15 - 25 minutes Step One Trace the 3rd brake light wire back into the trunk. I found mine running into the trunk from the driver side. The wire with black with orange stripe is the positive and the brown wire is the negative.

Step Two Connect the red wire to the positive brake light wire. The blue wire you want to connect to the positive brake light wire between your first connection and the 3rd brake light.

Step Three Cut the positive wire in-between the two connections.

Step Four Connect the black wire to the brown negative wire.

Step Five Wrap the connections with some electrical tape and use your double-sided tape to connect the smart stop to the car.

If you have a bulb out warning light you might need a 50w 6ohm resistor, but I discovered this was not needed on my 2003 Boxster.
