Students and staff volunteered at Operation Blessing’s warehouse in Chesapeake to help pack emergency meal kits. These kits provided food to children and families all over the world, as well as training on the importance of a nutritious diet. Later in the year, staff volunteered to pack disaster relief kits that will help people when tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, or other humanitarian crises strike.

IN THE BAG!

Wesleyan Engaged hosted the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on September 13 and November 10 for oyster bagging events. Students, faculty and staff put together a total of 170 bags of recycled oyster shells. These shells will provide homes to 467,500 baby oysters at the Brock Environmental Center. Once placed back into the Chesapeake Bay, these oysters will filter 23.4 million gallons of water a day. We could not have done it without our awesome volunteers!

MLK Day

Members of the Virginia Wesleyan community were engaged in numerous opportunities to serve the local community during a Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service, held January 14-16. Learn more about all the ways VWU honored Dr. King’s legacy.

Red Cross Blood Drive

Wesleyan Engaged hosted a total of four blood drives through the Red Cross during the 2022-2023 academic year. Blood donations may be used for patients in need of surgery, cancer treatment and transfusions for blood loss from traumatic injuries. We had a total of 115 donors, which equated to 327 potential lives saved from the blood donated.
