Friends,

A LETTER

from the Conference Chair

I hope you all are having an enjoyable and productive early winter. Though it seems as if we were just sweltering in the summer heat, we will soon be seeking the crackling warmth of the fireplaces at the historic Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center again for some well-deserved socialization amid exciting educational opportunities. Every February, I look forward to networking with comrades from across the state, and eagerly anticipate exciting visitors from all around the Commonwealth. While catching up with familiar faces is always a blast, meeting and greeting new faces in veterinary medicine is equally gratifying. Whether you are considering first-time participation or are a perennial attendee, please join us at the annual Virginia Veterinary Conference, February 22-24, 2024. We will get things started on Thursday at 5:30pm with a welcome reception featuring meet and greet opportunities with students from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Tasty hors d’oeuvres and your choice of refreshing beverage will be available, along with good conversation and reminiscing ad libitum. On Friday morning we welcome D.G. Pugh M.S., D.V.M., to deliver our keynote address “Finding Purpose & Wellness in the Many Careers in Veterinary Medicine.” Dr. Pugh is a Diplomate of ACT, ACVIM (Nutrition) and AVCM (Parasitology). He has owned and worked in private practice, as well as industry and consulting and served as director of the State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab system in Alabama. He also boasts an extensive career in academia having served on the faculty at both the University of Georgia and Auburn University. Those of you who have heard Dr. Pugh speak before will recall how entertaining and provocative his lectures are. For those who have not, buckle up for what is sure to be an intriguing session worth the morning rise. Friday and Saturday, multiple hours of quality CE will be offered in food animal, equine, public corporate, small animal, and LVT tracks. We are pleased to be bringing back a complementary medicine track again this year! Please browse the brochure to familiarize yourself with our exciting lineup. The exhibit hall will be open Friday at 7:30am and again Saturday morning until around 1:30pm. The hall is your source for feed, fodder and sustenance of all sorts throughout the conference with breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided daily. While foraging, please take advantage of the opportunity to visit with our gracious sponsors and exhibitors. It’s both rewarding and humbling to realize the ever evolving and sundry ways they can assist us in practice. Putting on the conference would not be possible without their support. Accordingly, everyone is invited to the exhibitor appreciation reception on Friday evening at 5:00pm for exhibit perusal with drinks. Immediately following at 5:45pm, the 2024 Virginia Veterinary Awards will be presented. Stay for this special occasion and help us recognize our colleagues and partners that have dedicated so much of their remarkable abilities and precious time to our beloved profession. I hope you will agree with me that this conference is a great value that the VVMA provides to its members. Thank you for continuing to be a supportive member of our organization and veterinary community. I look forward to seeing you soon,

Nathaniel Burke, MS, DVM
