In reality, decades of scientific research shows that many abilities can stay strong or even improve with age and lifestyle choices have a powerful impact on health and independence. This presentation, led by Fitness Assistant Camille Ashby, will highlight the truths about aging and the evidence-based strategies that support vibrant, active living at every stage of life.

Celebration of Lights Public Program

Please join us for VMRC Foundation’s annual Celebration of Lights, a cherished tradition that brings our community together for reflection, remembrance, and hope. This year’s program will feature music by the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir, Dr. David Berry, and a meditation by Rev. Dr. Shannon Dycus. Following the program, all are invited to enjoy a festive reception along Main Street in Park Gables. You will also be able to watch live on VMRC Channel 702 or Vimeo.com/VMRCBroadcast.

Celebration of Lights is also the Foundation’s greatest effort to raise support for our Compassion fund, which assists residents in Supportive Living who have outlived their resources. Donations may be made through December 31 via campus mail or by stopping by the Foundation office on Main Street. We extend heartfelt thanks to all who have already contributed.

VMRC Mary Reitz Nursing Scholarship

The 2026 VMRC Mary Reitz Nursing Scholarship application opens Monday, December 1, 2025 and closes Friday, February 13, 2026. Residents will soon receive informational materials in mailboxes to share with family members who may interested in applying or considering a career change into nursing. We’re grateful for your help in spreading the word about this opportunity!

We will award three full-tuition scholarships of up to $30,000 each:

As a reminder, the indoor Express Cart is operated by VMRC volunteers and provides FREE indoor point to point transportation from Crestwood to Park Place along Main Street. Riders need to be physically capable of getting on and off the cart independently.

Please note that the Indoor Express Cart will not operate at all on December 24 and December 25 due to the Christmas holiday so that our volunteers can spend time with their family and friends.

Free shuttle service is available five days a week 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call the Park Gables front desk at 540-564 3400 for a ride. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the shuttle to arrive. Closed for lunch break 12:10 - 12:40 p.m.

TOP VOLUNTEER NEED

Friday Afternoon Indoor Express Cart Driver We are currently in need of additional drivers who would be willing to help cover our Friday afternoon shift on the Indoor Express Cart from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. This is a temporary opening beginning in December and would continue into the Spring. The Indoor Express Cart provides point to-point indoor transportation all along Main Street, up to Park Place and over to Crestwood through our internal connecting hallways. All drivers receive helpful safety training and the opportunity to become familiar with the cart’s operation and route prior to starting a placement. This volunteer role is a wonderful way to meet new people, learn about campus and give back.

Two Educational Opportunities to Engage with EMU Students

Please join EMU students in “Bibliotherapy” for a spring book-discussion group on Mondays, January 26 through April 20, from 9:15 to 10:05 a.m. Readings and films will highlight the wisdom, comfort, and delight literature affords readers experiencing illness and grief. Authors will include Margaret Edson, Virginia Wolf, Doris Betts, and John Green. Space is limited to fifteen VMRC residents so please contact Kyle Remnant soon to reserve your spot. There is a cost of $20 to partially cover the purchase of books.

Are you a military veteran or conscientious objector willing to share your story?

Students in Marti Eads’ Ways of War and Peace class at Eastern Mennonite University would like to record your reflections for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project and the EMU archives. Interview partnerships typically involve three interview sessions in the meeting location of your choice during February and March. Please contact Kyle Remnant to volunteer.
