As we approach our 70th anniversary, we are proud of all that has been achieved since our beginnings. We are grateful for your support each step of the way and want to say, “Thank you.” We look forward to the future with optimism and confidence. The world changed dramatically in the last three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We adapted to the new reality by embracing digital transformation, enhancing our resilience and strengthening our social responsibility. We learned valuable lessons from the crisis, such as the importance of collaboration, compassion and creativity. Today, we believe that the post-pandemic world can be a better place for everyone. We are excited to embark on the next chapter of our journey with you, as we work together to overcome challenges and seize possibilities.

Gathering Again Gathering again after the pandemic led to many joyous occasions this fiscal year. When we joined with each other to celebrate our donors and volunteers and the blessings that sustained us, our resilience was on full display. Ever so mindful of the risks still present, we protect ourselves and each other. We also cherish the moments we spend together, knowing how precious they are.
Art & Culture The VMRC 2023 Juried Art Exhibition brought people together to see works by 83 artists from 22 states, plus Washington D.C. Participants in the exhibition entered 92 pieces of art spanning several categories. They included drawing, painting and printmaking, photography and digital art, 3-dimensional art, fabric, assemblage and other media. For the first time, three of the 18 award winners were chosen to receive professional development awards to help them grow as artists.
Being Well VMRC’s Wellness Center is more than a place to exercise. It’s a central place for a variety of endeavors that address the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, which include emotional, physical, social, occupational, financial, environmental, spiritual and intellectual. Residents flourish through activities, worship services and Hilltop Reflections at our farm.
Partnerships Forming partnerships can be a valuable way for Life Plan Communities to strengthen their services. This year, several partnerships helped individuals in the VMRC community deepen their knowledge and enhance their imagination, awareness and self-esteem.
BRCC A new partnership between VMRC and Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) enables all staff members to hone their professional skills. Instructors at BRCC come to VMRC’s campus each month to conduct a comprehensive set of professional development courses. The interactive training enables staff members to make connections between concepts and job relevancy.
Technology Fuels Connection One of the ways technology has kept staff members connected is through an employee application called Blink. The tool was introduced earlier this year and enables employees across all departments to stay informed and share their accomplishments with their co-workers.
OMA This year’s new partnership with Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) enables residents with dementia to tap into their creativity. OMA is an intergenerational art program aimed at improving the lives of participants and student volunteers who help administer the program. Cognitive stimulation opened the hearts and minds of all involved. Students from James Madison University witnessed the positive impact of OMA on social and self-actualization. VMRC residents blossomed. The act of creating increased their confidence and lessened their anxiety.
Newsmakers in the Neighborhood Ann Showalter has been a resident of VMRC’s Park Gables neighborhood since August 2019. She’s also one of the founders of the Town & Country Garden Club in Stuarts Draft. Ann served as a certified judge for flower shows and was a leader in the Shenandoah District Clubs and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Club members celebrated Ann during a luncheon at Seed & Harvest restaurant this year. She received a certificate, a lifetime membership letter, a custom-made pin and a special recognition certificate from the club and state president Heidi Sage. Ann also loves growing and arranging flowers for VMRC.
VMRC in the News Director of Nursing Rebecca Kline was featured in a national news story along with Leading Age President & CEO Katie Smith Sloan discussing nurse staffing challenges in long-term care facilities. The story was featured on the Marketplace show and aired on National Public Radio.
Becoming an author is a dream come true for many and a chance for a writer to tell her story. Park Gables resident Charlotte Burkholder took this leap of faith and ultimately published her first book, “Family Stories for God’s Glory: Finding God in All of Life’s Moments.” This book is based on real stories from Charlotte’s life, spanning from childhood to great grandparenthood. This book is also a legacy for Charlotte’s family and future generations, as she follows God’s command in Joel 1:3: “Tell your children … and let your children tell their children. Pass the story down from generation to generation.” Charlotte’s story was published on June 20, 2023.
Woodland Park resident Nancy Hoover and Joan Strassner, LPN (not pictured) were also featured in the story.
Farm at Willow Run The Farm at Willow Run is celebrating its 10th year of production. Thousands upon thousands of pounds of organically grown, nutrientdense produce made its way into recipes served at the Main Street Café, Seed & Harvest and the Hartman Dining Room over the past decade. Willow Run Farm has grown to become a thriving operation. This past spring, two new, full-time seasonal workers arrived at the farm to help with planting and harvesting.
Dining Services Residents, staff and visitors who come to the Main Street Café can enjoy their meals outdoors now. Dining services introduced a new patio that sits beneath a trellis strung with lights. The outdoor space breathes new life into the café experience. Also, the salad bar made a return after its closure due to the pandemic. Veggie lovers can once again choose from a variety of fresh and delicious salad options.
The Impact of Your Giving Foundation endowments and the grants they provide enrich the VMRC community in many ways. Program endowments generated $107,265 for community enrichment and staff empowerment initiatives. Compassion Endowments and the Good Samaritan Annual Fund generated $568,853 for Compassion Care. Twenty-six residents were supported by Compassion Care last year, allowing them to receive excellent care even after their personal resources were exhausted.
Carmen Miller is an endowment recipient of a Staff Development Endowment for Clinical Pastoral Education.
This year’s Annual Golf Benefit was the most successful yet. The benefit netted a record $73,213 to support Memory Care at VMRC. VMRC employees are advancing their knowledge and growing their careers with help from the Foundation’s Staff Development and Nurse Education Endowments. These funds support frontline staff members pursuing more education to advance their nursing professional skills. Staff development is among the Foundation’s three priorities, which also include compassionate care and community enrichment.

2023 VMRC Foundation Philanthropist of the Year Hugh & Connie Westfall, residents of Park Village, were awarded the 2023 VMRC Foundation Philanthropist of the Year award. The couple exemplifies community participation and generosity through their giving. In addition to their support for the VMRC Foundation, they support many other charitable organizations in Augusta County.
Donor investment strengthens our community in our three priority areas: compassion, staff development and community enrichment.

Several staff members and residents participated in the Annual Summer Assembly of the Virginia Mennonite Conference as delegates of their home churches on July 15, 2023.
