DEMO AND EXCAVATION | DEPTH OF EXCAVATION AREAS

1. Identify location to store excavated soil and location for asphalt.

2. Place out the perimeter of the bottom of the rain garden and excavate everything within it to 29”.

3. Mark out the perimeter of the rest of the footprint and excavate around it to 15”.

4. Slope the soil by digging to connect the 15” depth and the edge of the 29” depth at an even angle.

ASPHALT EXCAVATION OUTSIDE THE RAIN GARDEN: 1. Mark edge to be removed (see Dx.0) 2. Cut out and remove asphalt.

3. Excavate soil to a depth of 6” below the remaining asphalt surface.

RAIN GARDEN DETAIL BIORENTION SOIL, COMPOST, AND MULCH: The following instructions apply to the rain garden area as noted on the Material Layout Plan.

1. Gather the existing soil that was excavated from the rain garden area.

2. Mix compost into this soil to create a bioretention soil mix that is two parts soil and one part compost.

3. Loosen 8 inches of soil along the bottom and slopes of the rain garden area.

4. Dump or shovel bioretention soil into the rain garden area until the flat bottom and slopes have a layer 2.5 inches deep.

5. Use a shovel to mix this bioretention soil into the top 8 inches of existing soil underneath.

6. Dump or shovel additional bioretention soil into the rain garden area until the flat bottom has a depth of 12 inches and the soil on the slopes evenly meets the existing grade.

7. Top off the rain garden area with 3 inches of compost in the bottom area and halfway up the slopes.

8. Top off the upper half of the rain garden slopes with 3 inches of mulch.

9. Ensure that the rain garden’s overflow point is 6 inches higher than the rain garden’s flat area. The rain garden detail above shows what this should look like.

1. Place geotextile fabric on top of soil in area where surface gravel will be used.

2. Dump or shovel surface gravel into the appropriate excavated areas on top of geotextile fabric. The gravel should be 4 inches deep.

3. Ensure that the surface gravel areas are relatively flat and meet the surrounding grade evenly.

TOPSOIL AND MULCH DETAIL

TOPSOIL AND MULCH: The following instructions apply to the planted areas outside of the rain garden area.

1. Amend the top 6 inches of existing soil with compost.

2. Dump or shovel mulch on top of the amended soil. The mulch layer should be 2 inches deep. The topsoil detail shows what this should look like.

PLACE THE PLANTS:

ZONE 3 for plants that prefer drier conditions

ZONE 2 for plants that can tolerate occassional standing water ZONE 1 for plants than can tolerate wetter conditions

• Your planting plan has been specifically designed for these various conditions and zones are noted in your schedule.

Plants have been spaced according to their mature growth size. They will fill out over the first year of your rain garden’s growth.

• You also have areas outside of the raingarden that have been prepared for planting to support the overall design of your corner. Those plants are all considered “Zone 3” as they will be in drier conditions.

a) Once your rain garden and other planting areas have been prepared (see previous preparation pages), place your plants in those areas according to the plan. b) You can keep the plants in their containers at this point. It may take a few minutes to get the spacing right according to the plan. Refer to the dimensions on the planting plan as well as the “spacing on center” information. c) Make efforts to walk as lightly and as little as you can in the rain garden and prepared areas! You want to minimize compacting the prepared soil and mulch.

PREPARING THE HOLES: a) Gently pull back the mulch. b) Dig a hole wide enough to completely spread out the plant roots without crowding or bending them (this will be a small hole for plugs and larger for 5 gallon pots). c) Dig the planting hole deep enough so the plant, when set in the hole, will be at the level it was in the pot. d) Keep soil in a pile separate from the mulch. Set soil aside, as this will be used to backfill the hole.

• Rain gardens generally have three planting zones characterized by wetness. Plants have been selected and placed according to their water needs and sun exposure for these planting zones.

a) Tip the pot on its side and gently press on the pot to loosen the plant.

a) Backfill using the soil that was dug out of the hole.

Ensure that only soil goes back into the hole (no mulch).

a) Before replacing the mulch layer, gently water around the plant base using a watering can.

b) Gently pull the plant by holding on to the base of its stem.

b) Push soil around the roots in the hole without disturbing root arrangement.

b) Do not use a hose, as the direct pressure of the hose will push the soil away from the roots of the plant. A watering can will be gentler. Generously soak the plant.

c) Most plants will have roots exposed. Pull loose roots outward and cut or straighten any that are encircling the rootball (circling roots will continue to grow in a circle and cause the plant to grow poorly and possibly die).

c) Push soil down firmly to remove any air pockets. d) Do not replace the mulch layer yet!

COVER BASE WITH MULCH: a) Replace the mulch gently around the base of the plant. This will help reduce the impact of temperature changes and heavy rain fall.

d) Place the plant in the hole and arrange roots so they are point outward. e) Make sure the plant is placed at its original depth. Do not plant too deeply.

Rake away mulch and dig footing for bee box assembly installation. The hole should be at least 18” deep and 16” in diameter.

Place 5/8” gravel in bottom and tamp down to create a flat surface.

Place concrete footing in hole and add additional gravel around base to the level of the soil.

Rake mulch to cover top of concrete. Make sure nothing is touching the bottom of the 4x4 post.

Place a handful of wood shavings in the bottom of each birdhouse.

Attach metal hanger straps with nuts and bolts around light pole in four (4) bands.
