The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.

Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.

Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.

Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

A FAMILY TRADITION

As a krewe, Bacchus has a pretty impressive pedigree. Founded in 1968, it was one of the first modern "super-krewes” because of its size, remarkable floats, and celebrity riders, and was named for the Roman god of wine. Interestingly, Bacchus was also the first krewe to have celebrities participate in the parade.

Boasting something of their own pedigree within the krewe, Jason Dalton and his family have a history with Bacchus that dates back to the 1980s, when his father-in-law began riding the Bacchagator. “My father-in-law, Larry, was originally brought into Bacchus by George Boudreaux,” says Jason, who co-owns Camp Bow Wow with his wife, Scarlett.

At the time, Jason and Scarlett had yet to meet, but serendipity would soon bring them together. “Larry could not ride that particular year because he was in the furniture business, and they had their big Highpoint show in North Carolina,” Jason says. “So, he let Scarlett’s best friend ride in his spot. This same friend invited his Navy buddy—who was also my friend and coworker at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, where I worked as a chemical engineer at the time—to come see him ride. As a result, I came to my first Mardi Gras in 1995, where I met my future wife, Scarlett, in front of the International Trade Center in downtown New Orleans (now the Four Seasons) on Bacchus Sunday, prior to the parade and Rendezvous.”

From that year forward, Jason began going to all of the Bacchus Rendezvous, from 1996 on. “I would fly from Knoxville to New Orleans multiple times a year, including every Bacchus Sunday, until Scarlett and I got married in 1998 and we moved to Mobile, Alabama,” Jason explains. “Eventually, we moved back to Covington in 2001, and Larry and George made me a permanent Bacchus member shortly thereafter. Larry passed in 2011, but I kept riding. Continuing that tradition, my son, Austin, has now ridden three years in a row, and is now in line for a permanent membership to carry forward the legacy. Without Bacchus, he might not be around. Suffice it to say, Bacchus holds a special place in our family.”

hildren have a way of changing your plans, and so was the case for Whitney Hurst and her husband, Billy, when they had their first child in 2018. At the time, Hurst was the Operations Manager at Gulf Coast Bank in Covington and intended to continue working. By the time their baby girl was six months old, the couple had come to the realization that Billy’s offshore work made becoming a stay-at-home mom the best course of action for Hurst.

“Being a stay-at-home mom is a hard but very rewarding job,” says Hurst, who is now mother to a six-year-old daughter, Ella Kate, and a three-year-old son, Tripp.

“I stay super busy running kids around between school, dance, cheer, t-ball, and staying active with their friends. On top of that, I have cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, cooking—all the things that keep our home running. Even though I walked away from a career, being a stay-at-home-mom is literally a dream come true for me.

When I was a little girl and was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always to be a mommy. I know a lot of people dream of their careers in a business aspect, but I am so honored and blessed that I am able to be involved with my kids and not miss a single moment with them.”

As important as that time is to Hurst, she knows it is also important to her children. “My kids love that their mommy is home with them and able to attend every event, practice, game,” says Hurst, who volunteers as much as possible at her daughter’s school with PTA as well as being her classroom mom. “Ella Kate is constantly wanting me at the school. All of her friends also get so excited when I’m there, and the huge hugs they all give me makes my whole day! There are so many sweet little babies that I grow to know and love from my time and involvement at the school. I also coach Ella Kate’s cheerleading squad at Coquille, and her favorite thing is introducing me to her team as ‘my Coach Mommy.’”

The title is a memory that Hurst will carry in her memory forever, and, in being home with her children, she hopes that she will give them a thousand moments to remember throughout their lives. “I want my children to remember that their mom was there for them and with them every step of their lives,” she says. “For as long as I can, I will be there to cheer them on in everything they do. I will always be here for them, for anything and in any way that they need. And I will always be their biggest fan!”

Hurst and her children have a few special traditions together. “My favorite is our nightly routine,” she says. “We all read a book together—sometimes two, if each kid wants to pick a different book. Next, we say our prayers together, and then we all sing ‘I love you’ from Barney, with lots of hugs and kisses. After that, we have a goodnight spiel that we do together. The last thing I tell my kids every night before they lay down to sleep is how much I love them. And I hope they always remember that!”

Watching her children grow, become individuals and explore their world, Hurst says she learns daily from them. “The way they love life is amazing! They have an ‘I’m going to have a great day’ attitude every day, and it makes me strive to make sure they have that—and that I do, as well.”

We met at work almost 20 years ago and I tricked Steve into marrying me. We’ve been married for 17 years and have four wonderful children!

What strengths make you a formidable team?

Steve handles all the operational duties of the business that makes the wheels turn and I make it all look pretty! Without the balance it would not be as successful! It is certainly a team effort!

Story to becoming business partners:

There was really not much of a decision that had to be made, just a matter of when. The business grew much faster than we anticipated so after a year of being open on 21, Steve made the transition to be on board full time. We enjoy working together again. There is nothing better

than being able to run a business with your best friend and the person you trust most in the world.

Outline the services you offer your

customers:

We offer full interior design for new construction, renovations, home furnishings, and styling which includes a retail store front to help better service our clientele.

What aspect of your career brings you the most joy?

A completed project is always the most fulfilling part of our day to day! Just this past week we have successfully completed 3 installations and each client continues to send us thanks for a job well done, telling us they “can’t believe how beautiful” their home transformation is.

The streets were filled with families, food, and fun for the Covington Lions Parade followed by the Mystic Krewe of Covington and Krewe of Bogue Falaya Parades. It was a beautiful day to roll and our community showed up like they always do for a good time.

How did your paths cross and form this dynamic partnership?

Charles H. McLoughlin: We are a father-daughter team. Charlotte was in sports broadcasting working for The Golf Channel and traveling every week. She wanted to get off the road so I asked her to join my practice. I knew with her personality that she would be an asset to the business and was delighted when she decided to join me in the practice.

Highlight the individual strengths that make you a formidable team.

Charles: I started my career as a financial analyst at a large bank trust department in New Orleans. After being in the investment business for over 27 years, I feel I understand what clients need at different stages of their lives. With two different generations in our office, we can relate to many different client types.

Charlotte M. Guinot: I am an extrovert and enjoy meeting new people and developing meaningful relationships. I love hearing about clients’ passions, hobbies, family dynamics, and goals. I think it is important to listen to your clients. Once I know what their priorities are, I can develop a meaningful plan that makes sense to them.

Reveal the secret or key factors that have contributed to your success in business.

Charles: Charlotte and I have different personality traits that complement each other. She brings a fresh perspective to each case, while I offer my experience to devise the best solution for our clients.

Charlotte: In my past career working on the road in sports broadcasting, I met people from all walks of life. Fostering relationships is something I cherish.

How did your paths cross?

We were both born and raised in Covington, Louisiana. However, in 2014, I went to the 22nd Judicial District Court to help get an employee out of trouble. While there, I happened to meet a gorgeous young lady named Ariyal who captivated me instantly. I immediately asked for her phone number and a lunch date. The next day we went to Pho An and chatted for hours. We sat there talking until the restaurant closed. We remained friends and dated for the following years until 2017 when we officially became an item. I proposed after 8 months of courting, and we married in 2019. Our dynamic partnership formed organically because we were everything each other needed.

What strengths make you a formidable team?

Ariyal likes to invest as she likes to call it and I like to save, but it is a good balance and works out well for our family finances. We are both creatives in our own right. We are distinguishable in that Ariyal is an avid planner and very organized in her approach to things. I, on the other hand, am very adaptable, patient, and go with the flow easily. We both have strong faith which molds everything together nicely.

How would you best describe your industry?

PJL Concrete encompasses concrete construction, commercial and residential, specializing in both regular and decorative concrete applications. Custom-stamped concrete mimicking various slate, stone, and wood finishes. These applications can be vertical and/or lateral, such as outdoor kitchens, columns, patios, driveways, sidewalks, foundations, etc. We also offer

interior and exterior overlay installations, coloring, staining, and epoxy coating.

Uncle Paul’s Boil and Roux is in the food industry and provides seasoning for seafood boil, roux, and various seasonings for different types of meat. We also cook, specializing in boiled seafood and meats, gumbo, and other creole dishes.

Story of becoming business partners:

Our relationship as business partners came naturally. Ariyal being an attorney provides strong administrative support and legal counsel for PJL Concrete. She’s also the force behind the marketing of PJL Concrete. With regards to Uncle Paul’s Boil and Roux, Ariyal is my sous-chef and taste tester. We work for each other, and we work together on all our businesses because we back each other up on everything. What brings us the most joy and fulfillment is customer satisfaction. Bringing the customers’ vision to life and seeing the happiness that it brings them is gratifying.

Business Philosophy:

We are a Christian family. We operate in the spirit of faith. According to Philippians 4:13, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. That’s what motivates us each day.

What advice would you give to your younger selves?

The advice we would give to our younger selves is to network and seek out a mentor or coach. You can get farther faster with proper guidance.

STHS Pharmacy at Braswell's marks grand re-opening

COVINGTON – Five months after acquiring Braswell’s pharmacy in Covington, St. Tammany Health System leaders made it official Thursday (Feb. 29, 2024), with a ribbon cutting and grand re-opening of the newly branded St. Tammany Health System Pharmacy at Braswell’s.

In addition to uniting two long-standing local healthcare institutions, the acquisition ensures Braswell’s, which has served Northshore residents since 1981, remains locally owned and operated.

“We are, of course, excited and grateful to expand St. Tammany Health System’s retail operation today,” health system President and CEO Joan Coffman said. “But I am particularly gratified that we were able to purchase this iconic business and keep it locally owned. Under our stewardship, our Northshore neighbors can rest assured that Braswell’s will continue to serve the Northshore community with compassion and professionalism for years to come.”

When St. Tammany Health System decided to acquire Braswell’s, we knew then that it would remain a local community pharmacy. I always love it when history takes a positive turn. This is fantastic for the city of Covington and the entire St. Tammany community.”

In addition to Braswell’s, St. Tammany Health System will continue to operate its employee and inpatient pharmacy within St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

As much as we try to stem the bleeding, we’re facing worldwide catastrophes each year that remind us—quite violently—of the damage that we’ve inflicted on the Earth.

And we’re passing this on to future generations.

In hopes of working against this damage, Ducks Unlimited was created in January of 1937 by Joseph Palmer Knapp, John C. Huntington, Arthur M. Bartley, and Ray E. Benson—all of whom knew the importance of conserving the future of waterfowl through wildlife management. Time has only confirmed the need for such organizations, as repeated droughts across the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States and Canada have threatened the population of waterfowl in this region of the continent.

Naturally, the organization’s efforts will last only as long as there are generations of volunteers who believe in its mission. To reach the youth who will one day inherit the care of our planet and everything that inhabits it, Ducks Unlimited has created membership for those younger individuals called the Greenwings. “The organization works with local kids and youth by hosting different youth events around the U.S. to get the younger generations involved in the outdoors,” explains Ariel Alonso, LADU Youth and Education Chairman, Covington/ Mandeville Chapter Co-Chairman, Covington/Mandeville Greenwing Youth Chairman. “These events benefit them because they often include exhibitor booths from such partner organizations as Wildlife and Fisheries and CRCL that will bring educational information, which informs the kids about certain topics revolving around wildlife, fisheries, conservation, and wetlands.”

Incredibly, Ducks Unlimited boasts over 45,000 youth signed up as Greenwings. For the Louisiana Greenwings event in Covington each year, they estimate around 50 to 100 kids in attendance, depending on weather conditions and other events going on that day. Technically, anyone aged 0 to 21 years old can be considered a Greenwing, but members are separated by age group. The “Greenwings” age group is from 0 to 11, the Ducks Unlimited Varsity (high school) includes ages 12 to 17 and Ducks University (college) is aged from 18 to 21. After 21, anyone interested in being involved can become a DU member at any nearby chapter in their town.

“Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest, most effective, private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization,” says Alonso. “DU partners with private individuals, landowners, agencies, and scientific communities among other entities to raise money which helps to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands for North America’s waterfowl. DU has conserved more than 85 million acres of land so far—and the Greenwings are an important part of continuing that legacy.”

Naturally, the organization aims to make the educational aspect of what they offer fun, unintimidating, and engaging. The efficacy of their work is evidenced by the number of kids who come each year to Greenwings events. “I have been told so many times by parents that their children eagerly wait for the next event because they have so much fun,” says Alonso. “It’s so great, seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they’re playing games and learning about wildlife and fisheries. I love just knowing they had a great time and can’t wait for the next year’s event. These are the future members of our organization, so we need to reach them early, in as many ways as we can.”

Tomato Pesto Focaccia

INGREDIENTS:

• 500g white bread flour (with at least 12% protein content)

• 420ml warm water

• 6g (1.5 teaspoons) instant yeast

• 15ml (1 tablespoon) extra virgin olive oil

• 5g (1 teaspoon) honey, sugar, or agave

• 10g (2 teaspoons) fine sea salt

• Extra virgin olive oil for lining the pan and drizzling

• Flaky sea salt for finishing

• Toppings: cherry tomatoes and pesto

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together warm water, instant yeast, honey, extra virgin olive oil, and fine sea salt until well combined.

Gradually add the bread flour, stirring until a dough forms.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Transfer the risen dough to a baking tray or sheet pan lined with parchment paper and greased with extra virgin olive oil (about 3 tablespoons).

Shape the dough into a rectangular shape by folding it into thirds, similar to folding a burrito. Then, flip it upside down so the smooth side is facing up.

Cover the dough and let it rise for an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes.

MATH TEACHER HEAD COACH - TRACK & FIELD LOUISIANA 2023 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? My grandmother and great aunt were both teachers, but my husband actually convinced me to try teaching. I was working in corporate America and coaching track after work, showing athletes drills in my work clothes. My husband saw my commitment to my athletes and said he thought I could use that commitment in a classroom setting. I tried it out and I’ve been here ever since.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? All the non-teaching related work. It’s more than enough to teach, remediate and prepare lessons. We spend lots of time doing data cycles, planning lessons around specific questions that cater to state tests (which is also a sore subject for me), and other initiatives

that could be used looking at what I need for my specific students and their needs in the moment.

What do you feel is the biggest reward? The biggest reward is definitely seeing the hard work payoff, whether that is specifically related to mathematics or seeing students succeed in other areas. I’ve been working lately on helping students with life skills like coping with tough days or busy schedules as well as self-worth and self-perception. I love seeing students begin to see their own value or use the skills I taught them to navigate their own personal journeys.

How do you make learning fun for your students? Class is full of lots of songs, dances, and laughter. I enjoy incorporating personal stories - my own and those of students. And of course, students always best enjoy games as well as math that truly relates to real-life. (A student actually said “yes” in a non-sarcastic way to doing another project when she asked about how we were going to relate the latest class concept real-life.)

If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be? Use your voice, and be unapologetically yourself. “The same God who created the mountains and oceans and galaxies looked at you and thought the world needed one of you , too.” (I am super religious but I never push those values on my students.) The world needs what they have to offer.

KATHRYN CHALAS

Kathryn is a resident of Baton Rouge, where she lives with her husband and three children. As a self-taught artist, Kathryn draws inspiration from her faith, family, and a love for Louisiana. You will find that her pieces are loaded with texture and often have special meanings connected to her life experiences. Two examples are her signature Trinity collection, inspired by her faith and her battle with cancer in 2012-2013, and the Tresor du Marais collection, inspired by her love for Louisiana. These connections, along with Kathryn’s technique of mixing modern with tradition to achieve a timeless curated look, are sure to result in pieces that clients will treasure for years to come.

The Friday night lights were seen for miles as the Krewe of Eve rolled through Mandeville. This all female parade was 22 floats deep full of throws, music, and dancing for all to enjoy. Young love—first love—is often dismissed as foolish and fleeting, but in the case of Courtney Robicheaux and Keith Hunter, that out-of-hand dismissal is one that has been neatly disproved. The two met in 2009, when the blush of their teenage years hadn’t even begun. “We were 11 and 12 years old at the time, and he was my best friend's next-door neighbor,” Courtney recalls. “I had the biggest crush on him and would beg my best friend to go outside and hangout with him any chance we got. I may have even waited for Keith’s school bus from my friend's driveway a few times.”

While they waited until eighth grade to start dating, theirs seemed to already be a love set in stone, and the couple stayed together all throughout high school and college, when Keith went to LSU and Courtney attended Mississippi State. Having endured through the coming of age and growth into adulthood, Courtney and Keith’s relationship deepened even more when that bond was sealed with a ring on August 26, 2022. “Keith took me down to the Mandeville lakefront, where I thought we were going to meet some of our friends for drinks and dinner at Pat's Rest Awhile,” says Courtney. “He parked and came around to my car door, grabbed my hand and insisted we go for a walk—even though we were already running late. By then, I knew something special was about to happen. Our family watched from the balcony at Barley Oak, screaming and cheering with excitement as he got down on one knee.”

The screaming may have been kept to a mum, but the excitement was every bit as palpable when Courtney walked down the aisle at St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington on November 18, 2023, wearing a beautiful strapless Antonio Gual gown with a plunging neckline, panels of Alençon lace running down the side and a low back with buttons running down the train. Vows exchanged, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception at the Southern Hotel, where they dined on an array of seafood and Cajun favorites before cutting into their cakes—both of which were expertly created by Zoe's Bakery in Covington. The wedding cake, a five-tiered confection adorned with beaded details on the top three tiers, texturing on the bottom tiers and fresh flowers kept the elegance of the occasion, while the groom's cake spoke to Keith’s love of the fairway. “The cake was a replica of a golf bag with Keith's initials on the front and clubs coming out the top,” says Courtney. “We added our chocolate lab, Jax, coming out of the top of the bag. The details on both cakes were absolutely amazing!”

After dining, dancing, cake, and indulging in late-night snacks of mini pepperoni pizzas and mini beignets with espresso martini shots, the couple was ready for a very unique send-off. “We had a police escort block off the street, and after the reception was over, our band second lined us from the Southern Hotel to Covington Beer Garden!” says Courtney. “It was such a memorable moment, and our guests absolutely loved it!”

The newly married Hunters spent their first days of wedded bliss in St. Lucia before coming home to Mandeville, where they now own a home together, looking forward to the many years they have in their future, happy for the many that they have shared so far, and proving that young love truly can be lasting.
