From the Editor There’s something about August that always feels like a transition. The long summer days begin to give way to new routines, backpacks replace beach bags, and many of us find ourselves looking ahead to a new season. This month, we’re celebrating the people who care for our community every day. Our annual Top Doctors and Healthcare Professionals feature recognizes the physicians and medical professionals whose compassion and expertise make a lasting impact across the Northshore. We’re also honored to spotlight a dedicated school nurse whose care extends far beyond the nurse’s office. You’ll also meet the team behind Inclusive Fitness, our Impact & Give Back feature, whose mission reminds us that health and wellness should be accessible to everyone. As you enjoy these final weeks of summer, I hope you’ll take a few moments to explore the inspiring stories in these pages. And be sure to follow Social Northshore on social media. We’ll soon be asking you to share your back to school photos for a special feature in our September issue, and we’d love to celebrate those special first-day moments with you. Thank you, as always, for reading and supporting the people, businesses, and organizations that make the Northshore such a wonderful place to call home.

RENEE CHRISTMAN A LIFE OF CARE AND COMMUNITY
F
or Renee Christman, some of life’s most meaningful moments have a way of coming full circle. She grew up in St. Tammany Parish, built a life and raised a family here, and today, she has the privilege of caring for people in the very community that raised her.
As an Integrative Oncology Nurse Practitioner at St. Tammany Cancer Center — A Campus Ochsner Medical Center, Renee walks alongside patients during one of the most difficult seasons of their lives. Her role brings together two things that have always come naturally to her: teaching and caring for others.
“I get to walk hand in hand with patients and help them through such a difficult time in their lives.” 14
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Through integrative oncology, Renee educates patients on holistic approaches to managing treatment side effects, maintaining quality of life and staying on course with their treatment plans. Her care does not necessarily end when treatment does. She also supports patients throughout survivorship, helping provide the knowledge and tools they need to live well after cancer. “I get to walk hand in hand with patients and help them through such a difficult time
in their lives,” Renee said. “After treatment, I get to be there through their journey of survivorship and give them the tools to live well after cancer.” It is work that feels especially personal. Long before Renee knew integrative oncology could become part of her career, holistic practices were already part of her own life. Today, the St. Tammany Health Foundation helps support the work of integrative oncology, allowing that approach to reach patients throughout the community. But caring for her community does not stop when Renee leaves work. Over the years, she has supported organizations and causes including Ruby’s Kids, a nonprofit that raises money to provide Easter and Christmas gifts to children of families in active treatment at the cancer center, and THE Gala, St. Tammany Health Foundation's signature fundraiser for cancer care on the Northshore. She has spent the past five years volunteering at Lake Castle Madisonville baseball games, whether working in the concession stand
COMMUNITY LEADER or keeping the scoreboard while her husband, Mark, announces the games. She can also be found keeping score for the Madisonville Gators 10U baseball team and, during Lent, volunteering at the St. Anselm Friday Fish Fry. For Renee, community and family have always been closely connected. She and Mark have been married for 21 years and are raising three sons, Brock, Bryce and Beckett. A St. Tammany native, Renee attended Lake Castle Slidell and Covington High School before heading to Spring Hill College, where she played softball, spent a season playing soccer and met Mark, along with some of her closest lifelong friends. These days, when she is not caring for patients or cheering from the ballpark, Renee enjoys gardening and spending time by the pool. Her story is rooted in a simple idea: caring for a community can take many forms. Sometimes it happens in an oncology clinic. Sometimes it is behind a scoreboard, at a fish fry or beside a neighbor who needs support. For Renee, all of it is part of giving back to the place that has always been home.
The Story of Frodo and Zeus’ Rescues
I
n the days following Hurricane Katrina, I was able to turn a lifelong dream into reality by founding Zeus’ Rescues. What began as an effort to help the countless animals struggling in the aftermath of the storm has grown into more than 20 years of lifesaving work. Two decades later, our mission remains the same: to give every animal a second chance.

Frodo is a young dog who was recently rescued on the Northshore after being abandoned and left to die on the side of the road. Severe malnutrition during his early months caused deformities in his front legs, leaving him to walk on his elbows. Today, I’m happy to share that Frodo is making incredible progress. He’s gaining strength, walking better every day, and his skin is healing beautifully. Stories like Frodo’s remind us why we never give up—because with love, medical care, and a second chance, even the most heartbreaking cases can have a happy ending.

More Than a Cardiologist Dr. Farhad X. Aduli Is Redefining Comprehensive Care on the Northshore Great medicine begins with expertise. Exceptional care begins with listening. For 26 years, Dr. Farhad X. Aduli has earned the trust of patients across Louisiana by combining advanced cardiovascular medicine with something equally important: a personal commitment to the people he serves. As founder of Louisiana Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Aduli has created a practice where patients can receive comprehensive care designed around one goal—helping them live healthier, feel better, and thrive. Board-certified in Interventional Cardiology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine, Dr. Aduli specializes in coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and venous disorders, utilizing advanced minimally invasive treatments and individualized care plans. or Alayna Boudreaux, life is built around family, hard work, and showing up wholeheartedly in every role she takes on. Whether she’s managing businesses, coaching young athletes, or cheering from the sidelines for her own children, she embraces each opportunity with gratitude and purpose.
Alayna serves as Office Manager for her family’s business, Covington Body Shop, while also working as Marketing Director for Syn Skin Aesthetics & Wellness, Venus Concierge Home Luxury Care, Sign Gypsies Pearl River Co., and Sign Gypsies Northshore, where she continues to support the business after recently selling it. She also serves as one of the Birthday Party Directors for Northshore

Alayna and her husband, Riley, are raising their four children in Madisonville, where both grew up. Their oldest daughter, Aynslee, is 10 and competes in gymnastics. Five year old Rilynn is a competitive cheerleader, four year old Avryee loves gymnastics, and one year old Brooks is already showing his love for sports. SUPERMOM Being a working mom isn’t always easy, but she believes the example she sets today will shape her children’s future. She hopes they see the importance of working hard, believing in themselves, and staying committed to their goals. While balancing work and motherhood comes with challenges, she makes it a priority to be present for the moments that matter most, knowing these years are fleeting. One of the biggest lessons Alayna has learned throughout her career is the importance of believing in herself. Opportunities that once seemed out of reach became possible through determination and perseverance. She hopes her children grow up knowing that with confidence and hard work, they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. Although she has achieved success across multiple businesses, Alayna says her greatest accomplishment will always be her children. Everything she does professionally is motivated by the opportunity to provide experiences, activities, and memories for her family. Those memories are created through traditions they hold close. Every Fourth of July, the family takes a beach vacation together, and each Christmas includes pajamas, hot cocoa, a drive to see neighborhood lights, and watching The Grinch. Sleepovers always end with the famous “Boudreaux Breakfast,” where everyone decorates cinnamon rolls with icing and sprinkles. Through every celebration, Alayna hopes her children remember one thing above all else: they were deeply loved, fully supported, and surrounded by unforgettable moments together.

A Trailblazer in Personalized Plastic Surgery
Michele Cooper,MD
D
r. Michele Cooper’s journey into medicine began at age five, sparked by her own struggles with severe asthma. Frequent visits to the ER introduced her to the healing power of compassionate care—though notably, she didn’t meet a female physician until college. “It never discouraged me,” she says. “I just knew I wanted to help people, too.”
While working in her local hospital during high school, Dr. Cooper observed a range of surgeries—orthopedics, plastics, general, and urology. It was plastic and reconstructive surgery that captivated her the most. “I loved the external changes and the confidence it gave patients,” she shares. That early passion has guided her ever since. Now, with over two decades of experience and a boutique practice in Mandeville, Dr. Cooper offers highly personalized care alongside a small, trusted team. From the initial consultation to post-op recovery, every patient is guided by her directly. “It’s why there can be a wait to see me,” she notes, “but also why patients refer their friends.” Her motivation remains rooted in helping others feel confident and cared for. “It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the joy my patients experience,” she says. “I’m always seeking new ways to improve their outcomes.” Balancing life as a solo practitioner, wife, and mother hasn’t always been easy—but Dr. Cooper leads with grace. “It’s never been perfect,” she admits. “But 29 years of marriage, grown children, and 23 years in private practice? I’d say it worked.”
“It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the joy my patients experience.”

U
P21’s largest annual event is the UP21 Walk, held each year around World Down Syndrome Day. The organization also supports programs that build independence, confidence and inclusion. Through iCan Shine Bike Camp, participants ages eight and older receive specialized instruction to help them balance and ride a two wheel bicycle. UP21 has also partnered with Krewe de Camp, a weeklong overnight camp for people with exceptionalities. This October, Sugar Buzz will host a golf tournament at Beau Chene to benefit Krewe de Camp and help expand those opportunities.
Support begins from the earliest days of a family’s journey. UP21 welcomes new parents with baskets delivered to the hospital, hosts Parents Night Out gatherings and organizes playdates for younger children. Teenagers and adults can build friendships through bowling, pickleball, pizza nights and other social events. The foundation is also proud to support the G.R.A.C.E. program at Archbishop Hannan High School, sponsoring speech services, technology needs and classroom resources for the past three years. The organization’s impact often reaches beyond its own events. Fundraising efforts have helped sponsor a family at Christmas, 46

That same mission is reflected in iFit, an adaptive CrossFit program at CrossFit Mandeville. The program encourages teens and adults with exceptionalities to strengthen their minds and bodies while developing body awareness, social skills, confidence and independence. UP21’s next major goal is its most ambitious yet: developing an adult program for individuals who have aged out of the school system. The long term vision includes continuing academics, life skills education, social development and employment opportunities within an adult day center. Community support makes every program possible. UP21 welcomes volunteers, event participants and partnerships with local businesses. Give Back Days with Fat Boy Pizza, The Reminding Coffee Shop and Rusty Pelican have furthered the mission through donated proceeds. The annual Lucky Few Event returns to CrossFit Mandeville on Saturday, August 29, bringing athletes together for a day of inclusion, movement and fundraising. Additional plans include playdates, movie days, bowling nights, social skills events and the UP21 Walk in the Park.

or Dr. R. Scott Bermudez, medicine has always represented the perfect balance of science, compassion, and lifelong learning. While the complexity of medicine first captured his interest, it was the opportunity to care for people during life’s most challenging moments that ultimately shaped his career.
As a radiation oncologist with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Dr. Bermudez specializes in using radiation therapy to treat cancer while also helping relieve symptoms that impact patients’ quality of life. Inspired in part by personal experiences with family members affected by cancer, he chose a specialty where he could make a meaningful difference through both curative and palliative care. His days are spent meeting with patients, developing individualized radiation treatment plans, managing side effects, and guiding patients and their families through every stage of treatment. For Dr. Bermudez, the greatest reward is providing reassurance and compassionate care during what is often one of the most difficult seasons in a person’s life. Despite the demands of medicine, he prioritizes family whenever possible and credits the support of his wife, who is also a physician, for understanding the unique challenges of the profession. His advice to future medical professionals is simple: medicine requires dedication and sacrifice, but for those called to serve, it offers a deeply rewarding career.

Tanya WASSON RN, BSN • NORTHLAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Who in your life influenced your decision to become a school nurse? My mom is the one who encouraged me to become a nurse, but after 15 years as a hospital nurse, I realized how much of my kids’ lives I was missing out on. The Lord opened this position right as my daughter was entering kindergarten, and I just knew He was asking me to step forward for my kids, my husband, and a better work-life balance. I have never regretted my decision! What is the biggest challenge you face when supporting students’ health and well-being? Communication is sometimes a challenge. Children often communicate only one piece of the puzzle. I have learned to sit with them, truly listening to them, and watch for the unspoken cues.
How do you help students feel comfortable, safe, and supported when they visit your office? I have an open-door policy, and I listen to them in their entirety. I try to keep in mind that every visit is an entirely new visit and that their health concerns are the most important thing to them when they come to see me; therefore, they are important to me. I have found that children are generally inquisitive and many times just need to know the “why,” which I appreciate since I am very much like this myself. This lends itself to lots of health teaching when they visit. I try not to be dismissive of their concerns, no matter how small. I try to remember that they are learning and growing, and the knowledge we have as adults has not yet been concretely formed for them, so patience is always a must.
What do you find most rewarding about caring for students? There are so many rewards it is hard to name just one. I was the mom having to drop my kiddos off while I went to work, and I prayed that their teachers would love them and keep them safe while I had to be away. This gives me a rare opportunity to pay that forward to others.
If you could leave students and their families with one lasting message about health and wellness, what would it be? It has long been a motto in my family that if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.
I also consider it an honor that I get to watch the children grow over time in their own environment. Students are at school for eight hours or more, depending on their extracurricular schedules, and there is truly something special about being able to watch them grow and develop into young men and women of God year after year.
I want the children to know that the decisions they make now can affect their health for years to come, but that sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that are of no fault of our own, and they must extend themselves grace and time to heal. They are still learning and growing, and mistakes will be made, but there are very few things that you can’t turn around for the better.
K–12 offers a sweet insight into the journey of these kids’ lives and their families. I feel very proud of them when they succeed, and I am honored to be able to cheer them on and guide them on their journey through school.

Some love stories begin quietly, in the kind of place that becomes more meaningful with time. For Jasmine Arias and Steven Powell, that place was The Barley Oak. After two and a half years of dating, Steven brought Jasmine back there under the simple excuse of stopping for a drink before dinner with friends. It was familiar, easy, and unsuspecting, until he walked her across the street to the lakefront and asked her to spend forever with him just steps from where their story began.

J
asmine remembers being overcome with every emotion at once, so much so that the words Steven spoke are now wrapped in the blur of pure joy. The surprise continued at Whiskey Tavern, where family and friends were waiting to celebrate. It was the kind of full circle moment that felt written long before either of them knew it.
On February 21, 2026, the couple became husband and wife at Milicevic Farm & Vineyard, surrounded by blush, ivory, sage green, and champagne tones. Jasmine wore an Anne Barge gown that perfectly captured the classic romance she had envisioned. With an off the shoulder neckline, a beautifully structured silhouette, and buttons trailing down the back, the dress felt timeless, elegant, and completely her. As with many meaningful days, the unexpected became part of the magic. Just 30 minutes before the ceremony, a rainstorm rolled through, delaying everything by about an hour. What first felt stressful soon turned unforgettable. As the rain cleared and night settled in, 78

production manager Garett transformed the ceremony space with battery operated candles and soft lighting. The result was a candlelit ceremony that felt intimate, cinematic, and even more romantic than originally planned.
One of the couple’s favorite details was their custom second line handkerchiefs. Each one included hand illustrated symbols from their story: a fleur de lis, their Goldendoodle Sugar Ray, a butterfly, a Saints player for Steven’s love of football, Sal & Judy’s, The Barley Oak, and the American and Honduran flags honoring their families and heritage. Even the dessert reflected their personality. Instead of a traditional cake, they served a five tier Saints inspired king cake in black, gold, and white, alongside chocolate chip cookies, milk, and espresso martinis. After honeymooning in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, Jasmine and Steven are beginning their next chapter in Madisonville, where they are moving into their new home this month.

The reception carried that same personal feeling. Todd O’Neil, a close family friend, opened the night with his band and filled the dance floor. Later, Jasmine’s cousin Paris took over as DJ and kept the celebration going until the very end. The music, the family ties, and the joy in the room made the night feel deeply theirs.

FUTURE TOP DOCS
ST. TAMMANY’S NEWEST GENERATION OF TOP DOCS AT WORK IN NORTH COVINGTON
From left to right: Emilio Cardenal, DO; Abiodun Aboaba, MD; Aimee Rodwig-Lousteau, MD; Arline Ficarra, MD; Kristina Farragut, MD, PhD; Reagan Abadie, MD; LaMiah Hall, MD, MPH, MBA; and Mistina Mano Manoharan, MD.
T
oday’s top doctors don’t just practice medicine — they help shape its future. At the St. Tammany Physicians Network North Covington Clinic, patients of all ages receive exceptional care while the next generation of family physicians train through the ACGME-accredited St. Tammany Health System/Ochsner Family Medicine Residency Program.
As the residency program continues to grow, so does access to care for Northshore families. Welcoming more pediatric patients not only helps train tomorrow’s family physicians, it also makes it easier for today's families to establish a long-term relationship with a primary care provider who can care for them through every stage of life.
Under the leadership of Program Director Dr. Lisa Casey, experienced faculty physicians teach and mentor 22 licensed doctors completing advanced specialty training in family medicine. The result is a patient experience that combines the latest evidence-based medicine with the compassionate, relationship-driven care St. Tammany Health System is known for.
Another benefit patients appreciate is access. Appointments are readily available, and the clinic works hard to fit patients in quickly, whether it’s a sick child who needs to be seen today, a sports physical, a routine wellness visit or ongoing care for an adult family member.
The classroom is the clinic itself, where patients from newborns and children to parents, grandparents and centenarians benefit from a collaborative team focused on delivering outstanding care. This summer, the clinic welcomed its third class of residents, strengthening the local physician workforce while expanding access to healthcare across the Northshore.
Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, raising active school-age children, managing your own health or helping aging parents, you’ll find compassionate, comprehensive care close to home. With readily available appointments, a commitment to wholefamily care and a passion for training the next generation of family physicians, the St. Tammany Physicians Network North Covington Clinic is investing in healthier families today and healthier tomorrows for our community.
Family medicine physicians care for patients at every stage of life, so residents gain experience treating everyone from newborns to seniors. An important focus of the residency program is expanding its pediatric patient panel, giving residents the opportunity to care for more infants, children and adolescents while building skills they’ll use throughout their careers. For families, it’s a win-win. Children receive personalized care from a collaborative team that includes experienced faculty physicians and family medicine residents, while parents enjoy the convenience of having one place the entire family can turn for care, from well-baby visits and childhood immunizations to sports physicals, annual wellness exams and chronic disease management. But the clinic is much more than a residency program. It is a full-service family medicine practice providing preventive care, wellness visits, vaccinations, sick visits and chronic disease management for every stage of life.
