From the Editor

By Melinda McGhee, Managing Editor Social Alabama Magazines Women shape communities in ways both visible and quiet. They lead businesses, raise families, build organizations, care for others, take risks, advocate, create, mentor and keep moving forward, often carrying more than anyone realizes. This issue is filled with women whose stories reflect that kind of strength. Some are well known for their leadership. Others are making an impact behind the scenes. Some are building something new, while others are using years of experience to open doors for those coming behind them. What connects them is not a title or a single accomplishment, but the way they continue to show up. October also brings Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you’ll see pink woven throughout these pages as we honor the women and families whose lives have been touched by cancer. We’re especially grateful to the survivors who trusted us with their stories. Their words are honest, hopeful and deeply personal. They remind us that courage can look like asking questions, seeking answers, accepting help, advocating for yourself and simply continuing through the next day. You’ll also meet physicians, advocates and organizations working to improve care, expand resources and support women through some of life’s most difficult moments. We hope this issue is a reflection of the women around us: resilient, generous, accomplished, imperfect, determined and deeply connected to the people and places they love. Thank you to every woman who allowed us to tell a piece of her story.

GINA GREGORY F

or more than two decades, Gina Gregory has helped shape the Mobile community through a career rooted in service, relationships and a genuine love for the city she calls home.

Gregory was elected to the Mobile City Council in 2005, but her interest in public service began much earlier. After participating in Youth Legislature in high school, she went on to minor in political science in college. Her career took her into media, where she worked as a reporter and anchor at WKRG News 5 and other outlets in Alabama and Florida. She later served as Public Relations Director and spokesperson for former Mobile Mayor Mike Dow before taking the leap into elected office herself.

COMMUNITY LEADER

Throughout her 21 years on the council, Gregory has worked alongside residents to bring meaningful improvements throughout her district. From park renovations, sidewalks and resurfaced roadways to a new senior center and neighborhood-friendly fire station, she has seen what can happen when a community works together. She is especially proud of helping bring the Village of Spring Hill Plan into the city’s Unified Development Code and seeing the longawaited dredging of the lake at Langan Park begin.

“Difficult chapters do not erase who you are, what you have accomplished or what you can still contribute. ”

16

SOCIAL

But some of Gregory’s greatest strength has been demonstrated outside of public office. As a breast cancer survivor, she knows what it means to face something frightening and uncertain while continuing to move forward. Her journey is a reminder that strength does not mean avoiding difficult seasons, it can mean meeting them with courage, leaning on the people around you and refusing to let a diagnosis define the life still ahead. For women facing breast cancer or another life-changing challenge, Gregory’s story carries a powerful message: difficult chapters do not erase who you are, what you have accomplished or what you can still contribute. Leadership can be found in those moments, too, in perseverance, hope and the decision to keep showing up. After more than two decades of public service, Gregory continues to lead with the same foundation that brought her to office: listening to people, building relationships and working to make the community she serves stronger.

uilt on collaboration, integrity and strong relationships, Waters Edge Realty has grown from its Fairhope roots into a thriving Baldwin County brokerage. Now, owners April Hunt and Kendall Wahlert are expanding that vision into Central Baldwin, where Qualifying Broker Melissa Parker will help lead the company’s next chapter.

April and Kendall, what was your vision for Waters Edge Realty from the beginning? We wanted to create a brokerage where highly trained agents supported one another, valued collaboration and brought integrity and strong character to their work and community. We wanted people to genuinely enjoy coming to work, and that culture became the foundation of Waters Edge Realty. As the company has grown, what has been most important in protecting that culture? We’ve always let culture guide our growth. Rather than focusing on recruiting, we’ve concentrated on building something that naturally attracts agents who share our values. Protecting that collaborative environment has always mattered more than growing simply for the sake of growth.

What made Central Baldwin the right next step? We had prayed for the right opportunity, people and timing to expand. A previous conversation with Melissa about becoming a broker came back to mind, and when we reached out to Melissa and Donny, everything began to come together. It felt like the right opportunity to grow with people who share our heart for the business and community.

SURVIVOR STORIES

A Mother, a Daughter and the Power of Early Detection For Linda Self and her daughter Hannah Wagner, breast cancer awareness is deeply personal.

Hannah

Wagner

Linda Self

Linda’s journey began with a routine mammogram in 2018. It detected one cancer in her right breast, but an MRI revealed another. After multiple medical opinions, Linda chose a double mastectomy with TRAM flap reconstruction. Pathology later showed cancer in both breasts. Today, she is cancer-free. Her experience changed the course of Hannah’s life. After Linda’s diagnosis, both women underwent genetic testing. Hannah learned she had BRCA2 VUS and RAD50 gene mutations. Because of the uncommon VUS finding and her family history of breast and pancreatic cancers, she entered Infirmary Health’s High-Risk Breast Clinic and spent six years under close surveillance with mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies. A self-exam in 2023 led to one of Hannah’s first major scares and ultimately changed the future she had envisioned for her family. Because the hormonal component of IVF and pregnancy was no longer considered safe, Hannah had to let go of her plan, desire and opportunity to have a second child, a loss she describes as one of the darkest parts of her journey. Continued imaging later revealed a left breast mass that could not be biopsied because of its location. Under the care of Dr. Carmel Verrier, Hannah began tamoxifen and prepared for surgery. Dr. Katelin Holmes and Dr. Mark Stalder later performed her mastectomy and reconstruction. Hannah did not have breast cancer, but early detection, surveillance and knowledge of her risk gave her the ability to make proactive decisions before cancer became part of her story. Through it all, her daughter, Lena Elizabeth Wagner, was her greatest motivation. “I wanted to be HERE in her life,” Hannah says. Her parents helped care for Lena after surgery, while her husband, Andrew, supported her throughout the journey and was there to provide for their family. Faith, family and an experienced medical team carried her through years of uncertainty. Now Hannah advocates for genetic testing when appropriate, self-exams, early imaging and access to support resources. Her message is simple: knowledge matters, early detection matters, and being proactive can change the course of a life.

SURVIVOR STORIES

Christina Hall Christina Hall’s cancer journey began in late 2024, when she discovered something was wrong and began seeking answers. In February 2025, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and started treatment just a few weeks later. Today, Christina is celebrating an incredible milestone: one year in remission.

diagnosis, finding that worst-case scenarios made it harder to remain positive. Instead, she focused on her medical team, her faith and the people walking beside her. She credits Dr. Brittany Case, Dr. Rachel Harmon and Dr. Heather Castleberry, along with their medical teams, for providing wonderful care throughout her journey. But Christina says her “village” made the greatest difference.

Throughout treatment, Christina says her faith was her greatest source of strength. “First and foremost, God,” she shared. She was also “The people who stepped up to be there with surrounded by an extraordinary me, and the acts of kindness and love I support system of family, friends and received, motivated me to push through community members who showed up even on the most difficult days.” with love, encouragement and countless acts of kindness. Her message to anyone newly diagnosed is simple: You are not alone. Stay positive Christina made a conscious decision to stay and lean on the people who want to be away from internet searches about her there for you.

Stephanie Cobb Stephanie Cobb’s breast cancer journey began in 2014, when she was diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma with multifocal lymphovascular invasion. Because her cancer had a 93% growth rate, doctors recommended chemotherapy before surgery.

Two of three lymph nodes tested positive, but Stephanie was grateful the cancer had not spread beyond the sentinel breast area. Her treatment included eight rounds of chemotherapy: four rounds of Adriamycin and Cytoxan, followed by four rounds of Taxol.

Her husband was her rock throughout treatment, while her mother helped care for her children so Stephanie could rest. Friends brought meals, checked in and prayed for her. She also found comfort in a physician who was a breast cancer survivor and in the friendships she formed with her “chemo chicks.”

Cancer changed the way Stephanie approached life. With encouragement from her husband, she pursued her longtime dream of owning a gift shop. That leap of faith became Cobbwebs and, later, The Alley Café.

Her message to women newly diagnosed is simple: allow yourself to feel everything, lean on the people who love you and never give up hope. Cancer is part of Stephanie’s story, but it does not Today, she is celebrating 12 years cancer free. define her. PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Beyond

THE SURGERY F

or a woman facing a breast cancer diagnosis, the conversation with her surgeon will be one she remembers for the rest of her life. Dr. Lindsey Beakley understands the importance of that moment. As a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist with Southern Cancer Center, she pairs highly specialized surgical expertise with a compassionate, individualized approach to care.

A native of Mandeville, Louisiana, Dr. Beakley earned her medical degree and completed her general surgery residency at LSU Health Sciences Center before completing a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Illinois. She moved to Mobile in 2018 and joined Southern Cancer Center in 2022. Her expertise includes breast-conserving surgery, nipple-sparing mastectomy, oncoplastic techniques, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and high-risk cancer assessment. She strives to help patients understand their options and feel supported throughout their breast cancer journeys. Outside of medicine, she enjoys traveling, sailing, scuba diving and skiing. What drew you specifically to breast surgical oncology, and what continues to make this work meaningful to you? Breast surgical oncology is about so much more than removing cancer. Every operation can affect not only a patient’s cancer outcome but also her confidence, body image and emotional well-being for years to come. My goal is to achieve the best oncologic result while preserving quality of life whenever possible. Seeing a patient heal well and hearing her say, “I can’t believe it doesn’t even look like I had surgery,” is incredibly rewarding.

Breast Surgical Oncologist 34

SOCIAL

What do you most want a patient to understand when she first sits down with you to discuss her diagnosis and treatment options? A breast cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to face it alone. Lean on your care team, ask every question you have and remember that treatments continue to improve. There is so much reason for hope. I want every patient to feel informed, supported and confident that we are making decisions together every step of the way. What developments in breast surgical oncology are you most excited about? We are entering an era of endoscopic and robotic breast surgery that has tremendous potential to improve patient care. I recently completed advanced training in endoscopic nipplesparing mastectomy. These minimally invasive techniques offer enhanced visualization while allowing us to perform effective cancer surgery with smaller incisions, improved cosmetic outcomes and potentially faster recovery. It is an exciting time to be part of this field. What have your patients taught you about strength and resilience? I have the privilege of caring for an incredible group of women— and men—who continually inspire me with their resilience and strength. While my mentors gave me the technical foundation of surgery, my patients continue to shape me every day. They have taught me compassion, humility and the importance of truly listening. Their trust motivates me to keep learning, improving and providing the very best care possible.

“Alabama women deserve access to the full range of reconstructive options and the ability to make those decisions with their physician.” — MARK W. STALDER, MD

The commitment to patient choice drew Dr. Stalder to Alabama. After area oncologists encouraged him to bring his advanced reconstructive expertise to South Alabama, he expanded his practice to serve women of the Mobile Bay area. He and his wife, Morgan, soon saw firsthand the barriers some patients faced in accessing advanced breast reconstruction, including limited provider networks, reimbursement challenges, administrative hurdles and the need to travel for specialized care. Those experiences inspired Mark and Morgan to advocate for greater access. Morgan, founder and executive director of Access4Alabama, leads the statewide organization’s efforts to promote patient choice, transparency and access to medically necessary treatment. Together, the Stalders are working with State Rep. Jennifer Fidler on legislation aimed at improving access to comprehensive breast reconstruction and protecting a patient’s ability to make treatment decisions with her physician. Meet Joanna Spry Owner & Stylist With more than 22 years of experience, Joanna is an award-winning color specialist who spent eight years as a Pureology educator. She is passionate about creating beautiful color while protecting the health of her clients’ hair and building lasting relationships. What did you want Blue Water Salon to feel like when you created it? I wanted to create a salon where people genuinely enjoy spending time, whether they're clients or part of our team. Building relationships has always been important to me. I wanted our stylists to feel supported, encouraged to continue learning and proud of the work they do. When you have a team that loves what they do, I believe that carries over into every client's experience. Giving back is an important part of the salon. Why is serving the community meaningful to you and your team? We believe making people feel beautiful goes far beyond the salon. Our stylists visit local elementary schools to provide haircuts for children with special needs in a familiar, comfortable environment. We also offer complimentary wig cutting and styling for cancer patients. One of our favorite traditions is serving as the glam squad for Camp Rap-A-Hope, providing hair and makeup for the end-of-camp dance. Sharing our talents and bringing joy and confidence to others is incredibly rewarding.

Brooke has spent more than two decades helping businesses navigate an industry that never stops changing. As the third

generation to lead MilliMedia, she carries forward a family legacy that began with her grandmother while continually evolving the agency’s approach to media, strategy and client service. Today, MilliMedia blends deep experience in traditional advertising with a digital-first mindset, serving clients across more than 30 US markets and the US Virgin Islands. What do you enjoy most about marketing?

I love the strategy and planning behind it. Every business has a different story, audience and objective, and I enjoy figuring out how those pieces come together. The most rewarding part is seeing a smart plan produce real sales momentum for a client.

What makes MilliMedia different?

We are hands-on. Our clients work directly with the people developing their strategy, which allows us to really understand their business. We handle media planning and placement, digital advertising, social media, branding, creative, public relations, connected TV, outdoor, broadcast, search marketing

and website development, so we can build the right mix instead of forcing every client into the same formula. What does leading a third-generation agency mean to you?

It is incredibly meaningful to continue what my grandmother started in the 50s and my father helped build. I feel a responsibility to honor that history, but also to keep moving forward. Hopefully one of my three daughters will be the fourth generation of MilliMedia. The tools have changed dramatically, but strong relationships, good strategy and doing what is right for the client never go out of style.

The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation was established in 1998 in memory of Jennifer Claire Moore, a 16-year-old Baldwin County student who died by suicide the previous year. Her mother, Frances Holk-Jones, joined family and friends in transforming their grief into a mission of prevention, education and support.

Making these programs possible is the Foundation's Annual Professional Rodeo, its largest fundraiser. The event also honors Jennifer's love of horses and rodeo while bringing the community together in support of local youth. Today, Holk-Jones remains involved as co-founder and chairman, Jennifer's brother Grayson Moore serves as board president, and Executive Director Allison Moore leads the organization's continued growth. At the heart of every initiative remains Jennifer's legacy: helping young people feel seen, supported and connected.

The Foundation began with Peer Helper programs at Bayside Academy and Foley High School, two schools Jennifer attended. Today, the Foundation supports the Peer Helpers PLUS program in more than 50 schools, equipping students with communication, coping and leadership skills while teaching them to recognize when someone needs additional support. At the center of it all is Jennifer, whose memory continues to inspire a mission of helping young people feel seen, supported and connected to help. Nearly three decades after the Foundation began, how has its work evolved? We've grown from two school programs into a countywide network of youth support, prevention education, professional training and community engagement, all focused on strengthening emotional well-being. Why is this work especially important today? Supporting young people takes more than one program. Through training, educational events, fundraising and partnerships, we're giving students, families and educators the tools to make a difference. What do you hope students carry with them? A community where young people feel valued, know where to turn for help and understand the power of kindness, connection and looking out for one another.

For Mary, raising her family in Gulf Shores feels especially meaningful. “It’s a dream come true,” she says. “I love Gulf Shores, and I feel like the more I do, the more I can do.”

That sense of gratitude is reflected in the way she approaches both her career and community service. Dentistry is not simply a profession for Mary. It is another way to care for people. “I hope my children learn to work hard, but also to love their work,” she says. “With dentistry, I love what I do, so it doesn’t feel like I’m going to work every day. Instead, I’m going to help people.” Still, among all of Mary’s roles, the one closest to her heart is being a mother. What she loves most is watching her children learn and grow while recognizing that motherhood gives her the opportunity to grow alongside them. Balancing family life with a dental practice and an active schedule of civic and professional commitments takes teamwork. Mary is quick to credit her husband, Bryan. “Romance alert, my wonderful spouse, Bryan,” she says with a smile. “Many of these meetings occur before or after work, and I’m thankful to have a husband who encourages me to be the best that I can be.” That support allows Mary to continue saying yes to opportunities that matter to her, while remaining grounded in the life she and Bryan are building for their family.

For Mary, motherhood, career and service are not separate parts of life. They are connected by the same values: caring deeply, working hard, loving what you do and giving back whenever you can. And perhaps that is the example she most hopes to set for her children. A meaningful life is not defined by a single title, but by showing up for the people you love, the work that fulfills you and the community you are proud to call home.
