One of the greatest joys of this issue is celebrating graduates and the bright futures ahead of them. We’re grateful to four outstanding local schools for allowing us to recognize their students. Congratulations to the kindergarten class of St. James Episcopal School on moving up to first grade, Christ the King Catholic School’s 8th grade class as they head to high school, and the seniors of St. Michael’s Catholic High School and Bayside Academy. We can’t wait to see all you will achieve!

In our event coverage, we’re highlighting several wonderful events focused on supporting children in our area, including the Bulls & Bugs Crawfish Boil, Dancing with the Stars Jacket Style and more. We’re also excited to feature Social’s Best for Kids, recognizing providers and local businesses helping children and families in our community thrive.

CONNECTING COMMUNITY AND PURPOSE Rebecca Byrne

For more than a decade, Rebecca Byrne has helped shape the future of South Alabama by connecting people, resources, and purpose. As President and CEO of the Community Foundation of South Alabama, she leads with a quiet strength rooted in service, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the region she calls home.

A lifelong advocate for giving back, Byrne’s career has been defined by strengthening communities through meaningful relationships. Her leadership is grounded in listening, building trust, and ensuring generosity is directed where it can make the greatest impact. Colleagues and community leaders recognize her ability to bring people together across Mobile and Baldwin Counties, creating partnerships that benefit the region as a whole.

What has shaped your approach to leadership, and how has that influenced the way you serve South Alabama?

My approach to leadership starts with listening and understanding the unique character of each community we serve—from industrial centers to rural areas to our coast. No two places are the same, and meaningful progress begins with recognizing those differences. Bringing people together and fostering collaboration leads to stronger ideas and more lasting impact, and that continues to guide my work across South Alabama.

Through your work with the Community Foundation, you see many needs across our region. What inspires you most about the people and organizations making a difference here?

I’m continually inspired by the willingness of people across our region to step in and do the work. There’s a shared commitment to turning limited resources into meaningful impact through creativity and grit. I see individuals and organizations finding thoughtful solutions every day, and that spirit of care and resilience is what drives lasting change.

As South Alabama continues to grow, what do you see as the greatest opportunity to create lasting impact for future generations?

As South Alabama grows, our greatest opportunity is to be intentional about building long-term resilience. By investing in economic, environmental, and social systems, we can strengthen communities and expand opportunity. Building resilience now will help ensure a more connected, stable, and vibrant future for generations to come.

Whether working behind the scenes to support nonprofits or guiding a donor’s vision for long-term impact, Byrne remains focused on one principle: serving others first. Her steady leadership and thoughtful approach have made her a trusted voice in South Alabama’s philanthropic community. Through her work, she continues to help ensure the region not only grows, but thrives—with intention, generosity, and heart.

Proceeds supported the 2026 SEEDS Classroom Grant Program benefiting Daphne area schools.

Helping Cancer Patients

In the face of a cancer diagnosis, the emotional toll is only part of the challenge. For many families, the financial burden can be just as overwhelming. The Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation exists to meet that need—providing direct, meaningful support to cancer patients across Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

ACCF focuses on immediate, local impact, ensuring funds raised in the community stay in the community. The foundation helps cancer patients cover essential everyday expenses such as utility bills, transportation to treatment, prescriptions, and other financial burdens that continue during a health crisis, allowing patients to focus on healing and recovery.

Its signature fundraiser, the annual Masquerade Ball, brings together community leaders, local businesses, and supporters for an evening of celebration with purpose. Featuring live music, curated experiences, and a meaningful mission moment, the

event plays a vital role in funding the foundation’s work. The evening also honors local cancer patients and survivors through complimentary VIP tickets for patients in active treatment and a dedicated Survivor Lounge sponsored specifically to recognize and celebrate them.

There are many ways to get involved. Attending the Masquerade Ball is one of the most impactful, offering guests the opportunity to support local patients while enjoying an unforgettable evening. Sponsorships provide meaningful visibility for businesses while directly contributing to the foundation’s mission. Donations, volunteer support, and participation in fundraising efforts throughout the year also make a difference.

Every dollar raised helps ease the burden for someone in the community facing cancer. Through generosity, connection, and a shared commitment to helping others, Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation continues to provide hope when it is needed most.

Celebrate Life at the Country Club of Mobile featured Molly “Mahjong Molly” Hardy, who led an engaging discussion on the evolution, strategy, and spirit of Mahjong. This beloved annual event brought the community together to support women’s health initiatives at Mobile Infirmary, helping ensure women in our region receive exceptional care at every stage of life. The Title Sponsors for this event were State Farm agents Allison Horner, Rebekah Brown, and Rachael Kidd, whose generous support played a meaningful role in the success of the event.

The Fairhope Mahjong Getaway, organized by Marie Kline of Mahjong Magnolias, with the gracious support of Merritt Henry of Mahjong by the Bay and Stephanie Vander Dussen of Southern Charm Mahjong, brought together mahjong enthusiasts for a meaningful cause in support of Marie’s campaign as a Shucker for the American Cancer Society’s Shuck Cancer fundraiser. This thoughtfully curated weekend featured mahjong play, instruction, shopping, and time for connection, creating a welcoming experience for players of all levels.

The weekend was capped off by a beautifully hosted brunch by Neacie Johnson at her home on the Bay, where traveling guests gathered around a stunning tablescape of vibrant florals and thoughtful details. The relaxed, coastal setting offered the perfect backdrop for connection, laughter, and new friendships.

Through the generosity of participants and supporters, the weekend raised over $10,000 to fund cancer research, patient transportation, lodging, and other life-saving services—showcasing the power of community coming together to make a lasting impact.

Tee Off at the Wharf played host to a lively Rookie Mahjong Tournament by Sabrina Alexander of Dots and Dragons Mahjong. This 32 Mile Mahj FUNdraiser benefited Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast, as players enjoyed a welcoming introduction to tournament-style play, friendly competition, and exciting prizes.

Eastern Shore Art Center hosted its second Homes Tour, kicking off with a cocktail party at Anne-Clinton and Garriff Roberts’ Barn, where striking architecture and thoughtful design created an elegant gathering space. The tour featured five distinctive Fairhope homes, each showcasing art and character. Opened for one day, the homes supported ESAC’s mission to connect the community with the arts through education, exhibitions, and outreach.

The 2026 Gulf Coast Chinese Lantern Festival debuted at Bellingrath Gardens & Home with an all-new show featuring more than 40 towering, handcrafted light sculptures. Inspired by traditional Chinese lantern artistry and modern design, illuminated plants, animals, and interactive displays transform the Gardens after dark. The Preview Gala offered guests an exclusive first look with a signature cocktail, heavy hors d’oeuvres by Bay Gourmet, and a guided tour of the historic home. The festival continues through June 21.

Baldwin County Education Coalition hosted the 2nd Annual Charity Chukkers Polo Event benefiting Palm Project at beautiful February Farm. Presented by Shirlee’s Kids Charitable Foundation, guests had the opportunity to enjoy tailgating or a luncheon, for which they dressed in their Derby best, all while supporting care closets for Baldwin County public school students during an exciting afternoon of polo and philanthropy.

The Annual American Cancer Society Chili Cook-Off presented by Infirmary Cancer Care, a beloved Mobile tradition founded over 30 years ago, brought the community together in downtown Mobile to support local cancer patients. Guests gathered along Canal Street to sample a variety of chilis, enjoy live music, and cheer on teams competing for top honors—all while supporting the fight against cancer.

The Mobile Chocolate Festival brought chocolate lovers together at The Grounds for a delicious celebration of all things chocolate while serving as the largest annual fundraiser for Penelope House, Inc. Organized by a dedicated volunteer board committee, the event featured tastings, entertainment, and family-friendly fun. Mobile native Joy Gardner has pursued art since childhood. She studied painting, drawing, and sculpture at the University of the South while earning a B.A. in French, and continued her training with noted artists. Her work is exhibited throughout the Southeast and held in private and corporate collections. Inspired by nature and the seasons, Joy creates layered works in oil, watercolor, and mixed media, exploring color relationships to evoke connection and engage the viewer.
