From the Editor As summer arrives and another school year comes to a close, this issue is dedicated to celebrating achievement, leadership, and the people who make our community shine. This edition is especially exciting as we spotlight many of the talented chefs, restaurant owners, and culinary professionals who help define the Gulf Coast’s vibrant food scene. From beloved local favorites to creative new concepts, these individuals do more than serve great food, they create gathering places, support local causes, and contribute to the culture. We also proudly celebrate the Class of 2026. Graduation marks both an ending and a beginning. To every graduate featured in these pages and beyond, remember that your future is shaped by your determination, character, and willingness to embrace new opportunities. Dream big, work hard, and never stop learning. This issue also highlights our local business leaders and People You Should Know, individuals whose vision, dedication, and service help make Mobile stronger every day. Their stories remind us that today’s graduates are tomorrow’s leaders. As you enjoy the summer season, I hope you’ll take time to slow down, connect with loved ones, and support the local businesses that make our community special. Thank you to our readers, advertisers, and community partners for your continued support and for helping Social Mobile continue to grow.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

NO VETS LEFT BEHIND IN MEMORY OF LT. COL. MARK E. STRATTON, II

hat began as a way to honor one extraordinary life has grown into a meaningful community effort supporting veterans across our area. Founded by Frankie Little, owner of Roosters Tacos & Tequila, No Vets Left Behind, Inc. (NVLB) was created in memory of his brother, Lt. Col. Mark E. Stratton, II, whose legacy of service continues to inspire others to give back. Each year, NVLB raises funds to support local organizations serving veterans facing some of life’s most difficult challenges, particularly homelessness, housing instability, and substance abuse recovery. Every dollar raised through NVLB is donated to local veteran support organizations on May 26 each year, the day Lt. Col. Stratton was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 while serving his country. This year, Roosters was joined by local favorites including Callaghan’s Irish Social Club, Nixon’s, Loda Bier Garten, Brickyard, Debris, Grace,

Lucky’s, Bob’s Diner, Post, The Insider, and Squid Ink, all of which donated a portion of sales from the week leading up to Memorial Day. For NVLB, Memorial Day is not only about remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also recognizing the battles many veterans continue to face after returning home. Every contribution helps fund organizations providing housing assistance, addiction recovery support, and hope for veterans rebuilding their lives. Through grassroots fundraising and community partnerships, NVLB works to ensure veterans are not forgotten once their military service ends. The organization’s mission is deeply personal, rooted in the life and sacrifice of Lt. Col. Stratton and fueled by a desire to continue serving others in his honor.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark E. Stratton, II THE MISSION OF NVLB Service doesn't end with a discharge. For thousands of veterans, coming home means facing new, invisible battles — without a roof, without support, without a clear path forward. No Vets Left Behind was created in honor of Lt. Col. Mark Stratton to make sure those battles don't go unfought.

To donate or learn more, visit: www.roostersdowntown.com/donate

Lt. Col. Mark E. Stratton, II graduated high school as Commander of Foley High School's JROTC unit before attending Texas A&M University on scholarship. After graduating in 1991, he commissioned into the United States Air Force and served at Peterson Air Force Base, Offutt Air Force Base, and later at the Pentagon in the J-5 division. Mark was deployed to Afghanistan as Commander of the Panjshir Province Provincial Reconstruction Team. During that deployment, he and three members of his team were killed by an IED on May 26, 2009. Known for his unwavering faith, love for family, and devotion to his country, Mark was remembered for his positive spirit, “can do” attitude, and signature thumbs up smile. To those who knew and loved him, he was a true American hero.

A huge THANK YOU to all the friends, donors and guests who turned out for our 9th Annual Hats & Horses Kentucky Derby Gala on Saturday May 2, at the Country Club of Mobile.

Particular thanks as always to our Volunteer Advocates who work tirelessly with some of the most vulnerable children in our community helping to try and change their story one child at a time.

We sold more tickets this year than ever before. Guests savored delicious food and sipped on delightful wines and Mint Juleps as they watched the Kentucky Derby Races and bid on some wonderful items at the Silent Auction. We had outstanding winners for our Best Hat competition and our Dapper Man contest.

We would also like to send a huge thank-you to all of our sponsors who made this event possible and helped CASA Mobile raise significant funds. These funds will allow us serve additional abused and neglected children caught up in the child welfare system through no fault of their own.

A special thank-you to Judge George Hardesty who gave a compelling talk about the importance of CASA in making a difference in children’s lives.

Because of the generosity of our donors and sponsors, CASA is going strong, accomplishing its mission of changing children’s lives and strengthening our community.

F

or Frankie Little, Roosters is much more than a restaurant, it is the culmination of a lifetime of creativity, culture, and a passion for bringing people together.

Long before opening one of Mobile’s favorite destinations for fresh tacos and Latin-inspired cuisine, Little found creative outlets through visual arts, music, and songwriting. When the opportunity arose to build his own restaurant, he viewed it as another form of artistic expression. “To start a restaurant from scratch, you have to be willing to take risks,” Little says. “But you also have to be an artist. You have to be able to visualize a picture on a blank canvas.” That vision became Roosters, a concept inspired by his upbringing on a working farm in Foley, Alabama, his travels throughout Mexico and Central America, and his deep appreciation for the culture and community of South Alabama. Family traditions played a major role in shaping the Roosters experience. Little’s grandmother grew up in Central America, bringing flavors and culinary influences that blended naturally with the fresh, seasonal ingredients produced on the family farm. Those early experiences sparked a love for Latin American cuisine that only deepened as he explored the region later in life. “When I decided to open my own restaurant, I never questioned the type of food I wanted to share with the Mobile community,” he says. Today, Roosters has become known for serving fresh, flavorful dishes in an atmosphere that Little describes as “casual, fresh, and unpretentious.” While choosing a favorite menu item is no easy task, he admits he often gravitates toward the tacos, especially the Carnitas Pork, Mahi Fish, Carne Asada Steak, and Al Pastor Pork varieties.

ood f e h t n i t o n he “We’re , we’re in t iness.” s s busines perience bu ex n a m u h For Little, however, the restaurant business has always been about much more than food. “It’s a people business, and I love people,” he says. “I tell my staff all the time, ‘We’re not in the food business, we’re in the human experience business.’” That philosophy has helped create the welcoming atmosphere and loyal following Roosters enjoys today. It has also fueled the brand’s continued growth and future vision. Entrepreneurs interested in bringing the Roosters concept to new communities can now explore franchise opportunities through the company’s franchise program. For more information, visit roostersfranchise.com For Frankie Little, Roosters remains what it has always been: a place where creativity, culture, hospitality, and community come together around great food and memorable experiences.

Creating Hope,

One Brushstroke at a Time

What was once a plain hallway in the Arlene Mitchell Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital has been transformed into a vibrant underwater adventure designed to bring comfort, imagination, and joy to young patients and their families. The colorful mural was the vision of Fairhope High School junior Jean Pearson, a member of Create for Kids, a studentled organization that supports hospitalized children through cards, care packages, and acts of kindness. Inspired to make an even greater impact, Pearson rallied fellow students and teachers to create an interactive under-the-sea scene featuring a pirate ship, tropical fish, and buried treasure.

Delaney Cepeda, Lauren Hartwell, Caroline Hitpas, Gabriella Jones, Karidyn McKenzie, Caroline Miller, Abbey Moree, Avalee Moree, Arya Orlik, Narayani Patel, Jean Pearson, Linnie Grace Stacey, and Molly Wood. “In a place where families sometimes face the most stressful moments of their lives, creating an environment that feels less clinical and more comforting truly matters,” said Deborah Browning, MSN, R.N., CEO of USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. “We hope this mural serves as a reminder that

our patients and caregivers are surrounded by care, creativity, and hope.” In May, the students and teachers were honored during a special plaque unveiling ceremony celebrating the lasting legacy they created for the hospital’s youngest patients.

Over the course of several days, students worked together to bring the mural to life, transforming an ordinary hallway into a welcoming space filled with color and creativity. As the artwork took shape, families and caregivers frequently stopped to admire the progress and encourage the young artists. Students contributing to the project included Paige Benson, Bella Bruijn, Claire Cannon, JUNE / JULY 2026

After all, isn’t that why we are all so attracted to this part of the world? Further, we define Luxury as paying unparalleled attention to Design, Quality, and Detail. It all starts by designing Curb Appeal, ensuring a special sense of arrival; from the unfolding of unforgettable spatial experiences, to the entrance of the Great Room, which encompasses the Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, and the Outdoors... weaving its way to the grandeur of the Common Spaces, and finally to the intimacy of the Bedrooms. PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW

What truly sets Sawyer apart is his commitment to serving others. Regular customers are treated like family, and many menu favorites have been inspired by loyal patrons over the years. That same spirit of generosity extends beyond the restaurant through his ongoing support of local first responders.

Chef Tony

Sawyer

The inspiration for his annual First Responder Appreciation Event began in 2015 during Mardi Gras. After learning that members of the Mounted Patrol had been overlooked when meals were distributed, Sawyer stepped in and prepared food for them himself. The gesture led to lasting friendships and sparked what would become annual cookouts and initiatives such as “Operation Feed the Cops.” The outreach even extends to Mobile’s mounted patrol horses, with donated apples and carrots provided each year. Tony credits his faith and the influence of friends and family in law enforcement and emergency services for motivating his efforts. Through his restaurant and community outreach, he continues to honor the men and women who serve Mobile every day, making him truly one of Mobile’s “People You Should Know.”

Maya Hills

At

36 years old, Maya has learned that life isn’t about choosing between ambition and family, it’s about creating space for both to thrive. As a Senior Business Analyst at UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurer in the United States, her work focuses on improving access to care and supporting the well-being of millions. Yet beyond her career, her most meaningful role begins at home. She shares her life with her husband, Keonte’, and their three children, Kori, 15, Mason, 12, and Kannon, 5. Each child brings a unique personality, filling their home with energy, growth, and constant learning. No two days are ever the same, and she embraces the beauty in that.

Being a working mom, she says, is a continuous exercise in balance and intention. With so many moving parts, she has learned to release the pressure of perfection and instead focus 64

on presence. Whether at work or with her family, she strives to give her best, knowing that consistency is what truly matters. She believes her journey is shaping her children in meaningful ways. By being honest about the challenges she faces, she teaches them discipline and resilience. She reminds them that not every day will feel easy, but showing up consistently is what builds character and creates opportunity. One of the greatest lessons she’s learned in her career is to trust herself and embrace authenticity. In corporate spaces, it can feel natural to try to fit into a mold, but she’s found that her growth has come from doing the opposite. By showing up as her true self and consistently delivering quality work, she has created opportunities for advancement and impact.

Her proudest accomplishment is the growth she’s built while raising her family. Balancing both worlds has required resilience, adaptability, and intention. It has made her a stronger, more empathetic businesswoman and a more grounded, intentional mother. Through her journey, her children are learning that growth doesn’t happen overnight, it’s something you commit to every day. When she thinks about what she wants her children to remember, her answer is simple: love. She wants them to feel deeply supported, heard, and accepted for who they are. She also hopes they carry her example with them, that she worked hard, stayed true to herself, and never gave up on building a life she was proud of.

Some of their most cherished memories are rooted in tradition, especially during the holidays. The day after Thanksgiving marks the start of their Christmas season, with the tree going up and weekends spent watching holiday movies. On Christmas Day, they wear matching pajamas and host their “Christmas Olympics,” a joyful time filled with games, laughter, and togetherness. Through it all, she continues to learn from her children. They remind her daily that everyone is different and that connection requires meeting people where they are. That lesson has shaped not only her motherhood, but every relationship in her life, making her more patient, understanding, and intentional.
