From the Editor Every community has people who quietly make a lasting impact. They care for others, lead with integrity, invest in their neighbors, and work every day to make this a better place to live. This issue is a celebration of those individuals and the many ways they help our community thrive. This month, we’re proud to present our annual Top Docs issue, recognizing physicians across a variety of specialties who continue to provide exceptional care throughout our area. Healthcare touches every one of us, and having talented, compassionate professionals close to home is something we often take for granted. Their expertise, dedication, and commitment to their patients strengthen our community every day, and we’re honored to recognize their contributions in this special edition. Beyond our Top Docs feature, you’ll also find stories highlighting leadership, innovation, and community impact. From a local leader helping shape the future of our city to a familiar voice in local media using new platforms to connect with our community, this issue celebrates people who are making a meaningful difference in their own unique ways. Together, these features remind us that strong communities are built by those who choose to serve others and invest in the place they call home. Thank you for supporting the businesses, organizations, and individuals featured in these pages, and for allowing us to continue sharing the stories that make our community so special. We hope this issue leaves you with an even greater appreciation for the people whose dedication, compassion, and leadership help our community thrive every day.

COMMUNITY LEADER

“I want to ensure Mobile is a city that stands the test of time; that it’s a city that my children and grandchildren can be proud to call home.”

MAYOR SPIRO CHERIOGOTIS Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis grew up in Dothan, Alabama, where he was surrounded by a supportive family that instilled in him the values of hard work, service, and integrity. He began his career working in his family’s retail food business before pursuing law, serving as both an assistant district attorney and private attorney before taking the bench as a judge. Those experiences laid the foundation for his career in public service and his commitment to improving the lives of others.

Outside of City Hall, Mayor Cheriogotis enjoys spending time outdoors, finding peace in nature through fishing, golfing, and hunting. Above all, he considers his greatest role to be that of husband and father. He and his wife are raising four children, and he says providing them with the same love and support he received growing up is his most important responsibility. AUGUST 2026

What inspired you to run for public office?

Q/A

I’ve always subscribed to the idea that if you see change in the world is needed, be the change you want to see. And if you want the world to change around you, I don’t think there’s a better way to do it than seek public service. I find joy in helping people, and I love seeing people change their lives for the better. As a judge, I loved being able to give opportunities where that change could occur. In my role as judge, I knew it was going to be better for me, for society, for everyone in the community if the people I dealt with went on to lead successful, productive lives, while holding them accountable. I certainly tried to guide them in that area. As mayor, I truly get to imagine a better city, a better world for young Mobilians to grow up in and I get to take steps toward that better future. It’s really fun. What has your career in public service been like, and what first interested you in politics? I think I’ve always been interested in people who had the power to change their world. Looking back through history, I think you can point out individuals who absolutely changed their world and the future of their country, their hometown, their state, the world as a whole. I would love to be somebody who is remembered for having a positive impact on the world around me, and I would love to be remembered as someone who made people’s lives better. What has been your proudest moment as a leader? Many of my proudest moments as a leader are when I can lead a team of differing viewpoints toward the same goal. When I can help find the compromise that generally improves the situation for everyone despite differences. Certainly, the proudest moments of my professional life have been those times where an individual, or the family of an individual, who appeared before me as a judge, approached me later and said I saved their life. I know I’m not the one who saved their life, but I certainly created situations and opportunities where individuals could make better choices and longterm, positive choices in their lives. There’s no greater feeling than knowing you had a role in that. What are your goals while serving in this role? My goal is to make sure Mobile is a city that works for everyone. I want Mobile to be a place people love to live in and want to visit. I want to ensure Mobile is a city that stands the test of time; that it’s a city that my children and grandchildren can be proud to call home. As mayor, I want to make sure Mobile unlocks its full potential, and I hope it becomes a city that others look to for inspiration.

COMMUNITY LEADER How have you helped your community navigate recent challenges? Mobile, like any city, has a number of challenges. Recently we’ve faced a challenge with a stormwater system that struggles to keep up with the amount of rainfall we get. We are working to solve the problem, in part, by creating a new stormwater department and investing millions of dollars in the rejuvenation of the system to ensure it’s working at maximum capacity. Mobile has also faced a challenge of keeping up with road infrastructure maintenance. This year alone we’ve invested $17 million to resurface streets and roadways to improve commutes for all Mobilians. We have a new international airport opening in the spring of 2027. It has faced numerous challenges during construction, like rapidly rising costs. We’ve continued to work alongside MAA to make sure we’re building an airport that will serve all citizens of Mobile and hopefully many more from around the region in a way that is customer service centered. We’re building an airport where the customer experience will be paramount. We also want to make sure Regions Arena will be open and ready for Mardi Gras 2027. Thanks to an incredible team of engineers, designers, contractors, project managers and city staff, we have been able to advance that project at a truly impressive rate.

Originally emerging as a street artist in New Orleans, Grantham Unknown painted and sold artwork throughout the French Quarter, from Jackson Square and Canal Street to Frenchmen Street and beyond. His work invites viewers to escape the world around them and become immersed in emotionally driven, thought-provoking pieces. Known for uneven lines, splatters, expressive brushwork, and even fingerprints embedded into the paint, Grantham creates art that encourages interpretation and personal connection. Rather than fully defining each image, he leaves space for viewers to complete the story themselves. He describes his unique artistic style as “ruin realism” or “grit art.”

This $15 million project, with $6 million funded by the Mobile County Commission through the American Rescue Plan Act, will add 34 adult psychiatric beds, increasing the hospital’s capacity from 104 to 138. The expansion is expected to be fully operational in the fall of 2026. BayPointe Hospital is one of AltaPointe Health’s two free-standing psychiatric hospitals, providing specialized behavioral healthcare throughout the region. The other, EastPointe Hospital, is in Daphne. Both hospitals are part of AltaPointe’s comprehensive continuum of care, which also includes a Behavioral Health Crisis Center, 22 community behavioral health clinics, and 10 primary care clinics. This network ensures individuals and families have access to care at every stage of their healthcare journey. AltaPointe Health delivers integrated behavioral and primary healthcare, providing more than 1.9 million services annually to 45,000 patients in seven Alabama counties. Its physicians also serve as faculty and administrators for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry. J. Tuerk Schlesinger is chief executive officer.

SUPERMOM

SUPERMOM

Amanda Smith For Amanda, motherhood has never been about doing it all perfectly, it’s about leading with love, serving others, and making every moment count.

As the wife of Rusty, and the proud mother of Tayler and Tucker, Amanda’s days are filled with school schedules, soccer games, swim meets, family dinners, and a rewarding career. While she admits it’s difficult to miss an occasional school event or not always be home when the kids step off the bus, she hopes her children have learned that hard work, kindness, and serving others are values worth living every day. Professionally, Amanda serves as Marketing Specialist and Inventory Control Coordinator for WESCO Gas & Welding Supply, where she combines creativity, organization, and a passion for community involvement. Whether she’s strengthening the company’s presence across the Gulf Coast or supporting local organizations, she believes every opportunity to help others matters. 60

SOCIAL MOBILE

One of the most meaningful chapters of Amanda’s life came when she donated a kidney to a coworker in need, giving them a second chance at life. That extraordinary act of generosity reinforced the lesson she strives to teach her children each day: compassion has no boundaries. Whether helping a friend, a coworker, or a stranger, every act of kindness has the power to change a life. Having lost her own mother at just 10 years old, Amanda understands how precious time with family truly is. She treasures simple moments like bike rides, fishing trips, laughter around the dinner table, and heartfelt conversations. More than any professional accomplishment, Amanda hopes her children will always remember that they were unconditionally loved, endlessly supported, and always had a safe place to call home.

Mobile Infirmary Ranked

NO. 3 HOSPITAL IN ALABAMA

by U.S. News & World Report

M

obile Infirmary, an affiliate of Infirmary Health, has been named the No. 3 hospital in Alabama in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026–2027 Best Hospitals rankings, placing it among the state’s highest-performing healthcare institutions.

The hospital tied for the No. 3 position on the Best Regional Hospitals list and is one of only six hospitals in Alabama to receive a statewide ranking this year. “Being named one of the top hospitals in Alabama is an honor for our entire team, but what matters most is what this recognition represents for our patients. Every day, people across our region trust us during some of the most important and challenging moments of their lives. This recognition reflects the skill, compassion, and dedication our physicians and team members bring to that responsibility every day.” - Susan Boudreau, President, Mobile Infirmary In addition to its statewide ranking, Mobile Infirmary earned High Performing ratings in nine procedures and conditions:  Back surgery (spinal fusion)  Diabetes  Heart arrhythmia  Heart attack  Heart failure  Hip replacement  Lung cancer surgery

The hospital also received recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s new Regional Specialty rankings, introduced for the first time this year. Mobile Infirmary ranked No. 3 in Alabama for Rehabilitation, reflecting the exceptional care provided through J.L. Bedsole/Rotary Rehabilitation Hospital. It is one of only six hospitals statewide recognized in the specialty. Each year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates thousands of hospitals nationwide across medical specialties, procedures, and conditions. The Best Hospitals rankings are designed to help patients and physicians make informed healthcare decisions while recognizing hospitals that consistently deliver exceptional clinical outcomes.

ABOUT MOBILE INFIRMARY Infirmary Health is the largest not-for-profit, nongovernmental healthcare system in Alabama. It comprises four hospitals, two post-acute care facilities, four ambulatory surgery centers, more than 60 physician practice locations, two freestanding emergency departments, and other affiliates. Infirmary Health serves all counties along the Gulf Coast. It offers the most advanced technology, comprehensive treatment, and highest quality care to remain the FIRST CHOICE for healthcare in the region.

 Pacemaker implantation  Prostate cancer surgery These distinctions recognize excellence across cardiovascular care, cancer surgery, orthopedics, and the treatment of complex medical conditions.
