COMMUNITY LEADER

INVESTED IN THE FUTURE

F

or Carl L. Gustafson Jr., real estate and community leadership share a common foundation: relationships, trust and an investment in the future.

Before entering real estate, Gustafson spent nearly three decades in broadcast media sales and national sales management, developing expertise in negotiation, marketing and relationship building. Today, he serves as an Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Coastal Realty, bringing that experience to clients buying and selling homes throughout the area. His investment in Spanish Fort extends beyond his professional career. Before being elected to the Spanish Fort City Council in 2020, Gustafson served as chairman of the Spanish Fort Public School Commission and supported initiatives benefiting local students and schools. That commitment has continued in public office. Gustafson helped establish the framework for Spanish Fort’s first Junior City Council, giving students opportunities to experience local government, leadership and community service firsthand. During his first term, he also supported efforts surrounding Loyalty Park and advocated for the city’s acquisition of property along the Causeway. Now serving his second term on the City Council, Gustafson remains focused on the opportunities and challenges that come with a growing community. Economic development, infrastructure and thoughtful planning are among the issues shaping Spanish Fort’s next chapter. 16

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

How has your business background shaped the way you lead and serve others? Early in my business career, I learned that effective leadership requires a teamwork attitude. In a team environment, everyone wins. Leadership isn’t just about one person; it’s about the greater cause. Why is investing in Spanish Fort’s next generation important to you? The next generation are our future leaders. Encouraging them to get involved and take an active role in their community gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment and helps them feel connected to their community. I hope someday they will lead their own communities to be the best they can be. Everyone benefits.

As Spanish Fort grows, what is most important to preserve while planning for its future? We must focus on smart growth while maintaining our smallertown feel. Growth is coming, and it is important to preserve the family lifestyle and natural outdoor amenities that make Spanish Fort special. What do you hope your lasting impact on Spanish Fort will be? I have always approached service with one important question: “Will I be able to look back and say I did something good?” I want to say I was part of a team that worked to preserve the Delta, created opportunities for people to feel a true sense of community and looked many years into Spanish Fort’s future while investing in our next generation of leaders.

A

leen has never believed real estate should feel stuffy—she has turned her love for people and her outgoing personality into her greatest professional strength.

Since entering real estate in 2020, Aleen has sold nearly $50 million in properties across 23 ZIP codes in Baldwin and Mobile Counties. As Co-Owner of Blue Heron Realty, she brings a love for local businesses, a wealth of knowledge about the different areas in South Alabama, and a passion to see every client's real estate goals made tangible. What’s a favorite childhood memory from growing up on the Gulf Coast? Growing up on Mobile Bay. We had a bay house, and I spent so much time going to jubilees, hanging out on the pier, watching big storms roll in and building bonfires on the beach. What’s your favorite car you’ve ever owned? I’ve had a lot—17, I think! My favorite was an old 1970s Ford F-150 my dad won at a banquet. It had “three on the tree,” no air conditioning and a great radio. I’d drive around with the windows down wearing a worn-in straw cowboy hat. I’m not sure I looked very cool, but I loved it! What’s something clients quickly learn about you? No filter! I inherited that from my infamous mother, Claiborne Walsh. Sometimes I don't even know what I am going to say next, but it definitely makes things fun!

The inaugural festival proved immediately that something special had been created. Nearly 2,000 people came to Cassidy Park despite more than five inches of rain. That first year, the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival was named “Best New Event of the Year” by the Louisiana Association of Fairs & Festivals. The festival also received a first-place award for its poster and logo and was recognized as one of Louisiana’s Top Ten Must-See Festivals.

20 14

20 13

This September, the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival celebrates 15 years of bringing music, culture and community together beneath the towering pines and moss-draped oaks of beautiful Cassidy Park. What began in 2012 as an idea to celebrate Bogalusa’s rich musical heritage has grown into one of the Gulf South’s most respected music festivals. From the beginning, the vision has been about more than putting great music on a stage. Our mission is to preserve and promote the blues and the music of our heritage, provide a family-friendly cultural experience, and showcase Bogalusa and Washington Parish as a destination rich in music, history, art and community.

The recognition continued as the festival grew. OffBeat Magazine named the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival “Best Festival Outside New Orleans,” helping establish Bogalusa as a destination for serious music lovers. At the heart of the festival has always been heritage. Bogalusa is the birthplace of legendary pianist and composer Henry Roeland Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, whose unmistakable style helped shape the sound of New Orleans music. The festival has continued to honor the musicians, stories and musical traditions that connect Bogalusa to Louisiana’s extraordinary musical history. Through the years, the stages at Cassidy Park have welcomed an impressive collection of artists, including Tab Benoit, Keb’ Mo’, Bobby Rush, Samantha Fish, Ruthie Foster, Anders Osborne, Marc Broussard, Sonny Landreth, Paul Thorn, North Mississippi Allstars and many more.

But the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival has never been only about who is on the stage. It is families spreading blankets beneath the trees, friends gathering over Louisiana food, artists and vendors sharing their work, children experiencing the festival for the first time and visitors discovering the beauty and hospitality of our community. Today, the festival remains a nonprofit organization powered by volunteers, sponsors and a community committed to keeping this tradition alive. On September 25–26, 2026, we return to Cassidy Park to celebrate an incredible milestone. Fifteen years of heart. Fifteen years of soul. Fifteen years of sound. And the blues are still playing in Bogalusa.

What do your deep roots and knowledge of the area allow you to bring to clients that they can’t find online? I bring an understanding that goes beyond market statistics or a Google search. I’ve watched these communities grow and change, and I know the lifestyles, neighborhoods and nuances that make each area unique. That helps me guide clients beyond the house itself and toward the place that best fits them. How does working with such a wide range of properties benefit your clients? No two transactions are alike. That variety has taught me to recognize potential issues, think creatively when challenges arise and approach each situation with a broader view of the market. Whether it’s a first home or a major investment, I want my clients to feel confident in every decision. What does being nominated for Baldwin REALTORS® REALTOR® of the Year mean to you? Baldwin County isn’t just where I work—it’s home. Being nominated by my peers makes it especially meaningful. I’ve always believed being a REALTOR® is about more than buying and selling property; it’s about how you show up for your clients, profession and community. I’m incredibly grateful to build a business doing something I love in a place I genuinely care about.

or Judd, real estate is about more than buying and selling property. It is about knowing the community, staying engaged and helping people make informed decisions about where they call home. Judd has built his career on local knowledge, straightforward guidance and an interest in Baldwin County’s future. His commitment to his industry and community earned him a nomination for Baldwin REALTORS®’ Distinguished REALTOR® Award. How does staying informed about Baldwin County’s growth help you better serve clients? Baldwin County changes fast, with new schools, roads and neighborhoods where open land once stood. I make it my job to keep up. When someone is making one of life’s biggest financial decisions, they deserve to know what’s happening around that house, not just what it looks like today.

What does being nominated for the Distinguished REALTOR® Award mean to you? It caught me off guard, and it’s humbling. I’ve spent more than 30 years in Baldwin County, long before I sold a house here. This recognition belongs just as much to the clients who trusted me and people who referred me. How can REALTORS® positively contribute to their communities? Show up even when there’s nothing in it for you, whether that’s local planning, schools or food banks. Growth brings opportunities and challenges. Our job is to be honest about both while raising the standard for agents coming behind us. You’re known for #AskJudd. What question do you wish more clients would ask? “What don’t I know that I should be asking?” The questions that save people money and headaches are often the ones they don’t think to ask, from zoning and nearby plans to what an inspection report is really telling them. MINDY BY THE NUMBERS $40+ Million in Annual Gross Sales #1 RE/MAX Individual Agent in Alabama — 2022, 2023 & 2024 RE/MAX Hall of Fame 605+ Closed Transactions $ 298,621,001 Total Sales 12+ Years in Real Estate How does your experience across Baldwin County give buyers and sellers an advantage? Growing up in Baldwin County and working across its diverse markets gives me a broad perspective. From beachfront condos and luxury homes to neighborhoods, acreage and rural properties, I understand that value looks different in every community. That knowledge helps my client's price, negotiate and recognize opportunities.

What have hundreds of transactions taught you about getting a deal successfully to the closing table? Experience brings instincts you can’t learn overnight. I’ve learned to anticipate challenges, communicate effectively, know when to negotiate or be patient, and find solutions when the unexpected happens. Those instincts help me confidently guide clients through even the most complicated transactions.

onnie Killian knows that finding the right home is about much more than an address. After building a successful real estate career in Colorado, Connie made a move of her own in 2022, choosing Alabama’s Gulf Coast as the place to begin her next chapter.

She combines decades of industry experience with the perspective of someone who understands firsthand what it means to relocate, establish new roots and discover what makes a community feel like home. From longtime residents making their next move to newcomers discovering Baldwin County, Connie brings a relationship-driven approach centered on listening, understanding her clients’ goals and helping them navigate each decision with confidence. After 20+ years in real estate, what have you learned matters most to clients? I’ve learned that clients value having someone they can trust—someone who communicates honestly, understands what matters to them and is truly in their corner. I want my clients to know I’m looking out for their best interests, not just through the transaction, but long after closing. What advice do you give clients who are new to Baldwin County? Baldwin County offers so many different lifestyles, and what feels like home is different for everyone. Beyond our beautiful Bay and beaches, it’s the welcoming communities, the people and the quality of life that make this area so special. I enjoy helping clients look beyond the house itself and find the place where they truly feel they belong.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

Where Creativity

Community Meet W

Festival Featured Artist Virginia Nelson

hat began with 60 vendor booths along an “Antique Alley” in 1989 has grown into one of the Eastern Shore’s most anticipated fall traditions. Now in its 38th year, the Jubilee Festival of Arts will fill W.O. Lott Park in Olde Towne Daphne with art, music, food and family fun October 17–18. Organized by the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce and City of Daphne, the festival remains rooted in its purpose: supporting tourism and the arts while showcasing Olde Towne Daphne.

More than 140 juried artists will showcase works ranging from painting and pottery to jewelry, sculpture, woodworking and mixed media. The Jubilee Market will showcase local makers and specialty goods alongside live entertainment, food and free children’s activities. Kids Art in the Park gives young festivalgoers a chance to create and explore.

Co-Chair DEBrA SCHMITT

Co-Chair Lia Harbin 44

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

How does the mission to support the arts and tourism come to life during festival weekend? Debra: For two days, Daphne becomes a destination for visitors from across Alabama and the Gulf Coast who come to experience the festival, often introducing hundreds of visitors to our community. What has helped the festival grow while preserving its community spirit? Lia: The community itself is what has helped the festival continue to grow. We’re fortunate to have so many local businesses, organizations, volunteers and community partners willing to donate their time, resources and support. As the event has grown, that local involvement has remained at the heart of it. It truly feels like a community effort.

What has been most meaningful to you personally about serving as co-chair? Debra: The most meaningful part is being part of a beloved community tradition that celebrates both artistry and connection. Every festival is unique, and I am always excited to support more than 140 talented local and regional artists. This festival showcases the vibrant spirit of our community and why the festival has remained so special for 38 years. What are you most proud of as you see the months of planning come together? Lia: I’m proud of seeing so many people come together to make the festival a success. Our committee puts months of time, thought and effort into planning. One of my favorite parts is seeing the artists share their talents and watching people connect with their work. Seeing everyone experience the festival together is really what it’s all about. MELISSA SPRINKLE

F

or Melissa Sprinkle, caring for people has never been limited to one career or role. From healthcare and wedding planning to real estate, education and community service, helping others has remained a constant. At the heart of it all is her family: husband Spencer and their children, Parker, 15, and Maddie, 13.

An Alabama native and University of Alabama nursing graduate, Melissa spent 15 years in healthcare before expanding into event planning and real estate. She continues to coordinate weddings while serving as a REALTOR® with Elite Real Estate SolutionsGulf Coast. Working throughout Baldwin and Mobile counties, she approaches real estate with a simple philosophy: her clients’ goals become her goals. Photo by Sam ant h

As Executive Director of the Spanish Fort Education Enrichment Foundation, Melissa supports enrichment opportunities for students in Spanish Fort public schools while strengthening connections among schools, families and the community.

aS mit h

Children’s causes hold a special place in her service. She has volunteered with Magic Moments since 2015, supporting Alabama children facing chronic and life-threatening illnesses. She previously worked with the Berry Strong Foundation, supporting childhood cancer awareness and research fundraising, and the Krewe of Kindness, which supports adaptive athletics, individuals with special needs and initiatives benefiting USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Her passion for service also intersects with her love of pickleball. In 2026, Melissa served as a Shucker for the American Cancer Society’s Shuck Cancer South Alabama campaign and hosted the City of Spanish Fort’s inaugural Battle at the Fort Pickleball Tournament, turning a community sporting event into an opportunity to support the fight against cancer. She now serves on the Shuck Cancer South Alabama committee. 56

Melissa is also part of Court Connect, an initiative promoting corporate team-building through pickleball and bringing people together through recreation and community. For Melissa, balancing professional and community commitments with being a wife and mom is less about doing everything and more about being present for what matters most. Spencer, Parker and Maddie remain at the center of it all. What do you hope your children learn from watching you balance family, career and service to others? I hope they learn they can work hard, pursue big dreams, love their family deeply and still lead with kindness and serve others. True success is not only what they accomplish, but how they treat people along the way, and they can have a giving heart without losing themselves in the process.

How has motherhood shaped the way you approach your career, care for others and define what matters most? Motherhood has changed how I see success, leadership and caring for others. It reminds me that everyone is someone’s child, parent or loved one, and we may never know what they are quietly facing. It has taught me to choose kindness, give grace and remember that success means little without the people you love and the difference you make in others’ lives.

BRIDE

Caroline +David

Photography by Davy Whitener — @davywhitener

aroline Ladd and David Churchill celebrated their marriage with a day that felt distinctly their own— vibrant, welcoming and full of personality. Following their ceremony at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, family and friends gathered at the bride’s family home on Dog River for an elegant yet effortlessly joyful reception. Their story began through mutual friends at a dog park, where a chance meeting grew into a relationship filled with shared adventures alongside their beloved dogs, Tilly and Axel. Nearly four years later, David proposed during a quiet sunrise walk on Oak Island, North Carolina, setting the stage for a celebration centered on the people, places and details they love most. As a graphic designer at Arzberger Stationers, Caroline approached the wedding with an artist’s eye, envisioning a 70

SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

celebration that told their story from beginning to end. Custom artwork by local artist Kirby Lowenstein, originally created for their save-thedate, became a visual thread throughout the day, appearing on invitations, paper goods and other personalized pieces. Working alongside Studio08, Caroline brought that vision to life through an intentional progression of color and design. Guests were welcomed to a ceremony featuring soft, romantic hues before moving into a cocktail hour where richer colors and natural rattan accents introduced a relaxed coastal elegance. The reception then burst into vivid shades of yellow, green, pink and orange. Layers of pattern and texture added visual interest at every turn, from sunny striped awnings and scalloped valances trimmed in yellow to sweeping green drapery framing the reception. A custom cocktail bar and distinctive dance floor became natural gathering places as the celebration continued into the night.

Bright florals and playful details carried the design throughout the reception, with Caroline’s calligraphy and illustrations appearing on cocktail napkins, martini picks and other unexpected touches. Lively dueling pianos set the tone during cocktail hour, while the menu featured favorite family dishes with Gulf Coast influences. Signature cocktails—an Old Fashioned, Aperol Spritz and Dirty Martini—added a personal nod to the couple’s favorites. For the Studio08 team, the most memorable part of the experience was Caroline herself. Her enthusiasm,

creativity and joyful spirit made the planning process a true pleasure. Together, the couple and their creative team transformed a meaningful family setting into a celebration that was sophisticated without feeling formal and colorful without losing its sense of warmth—a fitting beginning to Caroline and David’s next chapter. Following the festivities, the newlyweds honeymooned at Excellence Oyster Bay in Jamaica before returning to Charlotte, North Carolina. They are enjoying settling into their new home, traveling with Tilly and Axel, and embracing the adventures of married life.
