From the Editor The team at Social Eastern Shore felt it befitting that we selected the month of love for our first Social Weddings issue. We are honored that six local couples allowed us to share the details of their most special day. In Masters of the Ceremony, we highlight a group of our area’s finest professionals specializing in bringing weddings and events to life.

The 2023 holiday season was full of festive events. Happy 50th Anniversary to our friends at Baldwin County Home Builders Association! Their Christmas party and anniversary celebration is one of the great events that we are excited to feature in this issue. Included in our editorial features, we introduce you to the Senior Project Manager for Baldwin Preparatory Academy, a woman passionate about building a legacy through her work with our local schools. 2024 is in full swing, and although February is the shortest month in days, it is full of revelry! Baldwin Prep is important to the community in a lot of ways. I have learned so much from the educators, administrators, and design team about what makes this school different from others, and it is exciting.
Kelli Williams’s Work with Baldwin Prep BY LIESEL SCHMIDT Reading over Kelli Williams’s CV, the list of projects with her fingerprints all over them is an impressive one. The Guntersville, Alabama, native graduated from Auburn University with a BS in Building Construction, working her own way through school as part of a coop program that gave her “exposure to parts of the job that aren’t taught in a classroom,” as Williams observes. Her goal, going into university, was to obtain a degree and enter a career field that she could make money at, that would interest her and challenge her, as Williams had always had an interest in STEM programs. Construction seemed to fit the bill, and over the last twenty-plus years, her talents have led her on an incredible journey—her first big project being the addition of the LSU stadium in Baton Rouge. Later, she began work on the Destin/Ft. Walton/Valparaiso airport, which brought her to the coast. Next came a project with Navy Federal in Pensacola, and then Williams later moved into more industrial and environmental work. 18

Eventually, Williams started her own business in Mobile. When Lord & Sons Construction was contracted to build Spanish Fort Elementary, she took a job with the company and became project lead for the school. In April of 2023, she became Senior Project Manager for the Baldwin Prep construction project. “Baldwin Prep is important to the community in a lot of ways,” she says of what makes this project a particularly personal one. “I have learned so much from the educators, administrators, and design team about what makes this school different from others, and it is exciting. What they do is preparing local students to enter the workforce, which is essential to a growing and thriving community, as a strong workforce brings attractive jobs to the area. In my opinion, that improves the quality of life for everyone who lives here. “My own education was in construction, and it has given me a rewarding career and a lot of pride in the things I have been a part of building,” she continues. “I am an example of how life-changing an education can be. I also feel that hands-on experience is important, and that is what Baldwin Prep will give their students. Students at Baldwin Prep will get the education, the practical experience, and the skills to be competitive in a job market when they graduate. They will help students find the right career path that fits their interest and skills and will give them incredible options for the future. I believe so much in what they’re doing, and I’m proud to be part of it in the way that I am.” From this side of a two-decade-long career, Williams sees the ways her education has opened doors that otherwise would have been shut. “I have been a part of many exciting projects all over the Southeast,” she says. “I have worked on hospitals, power plants, pipelines, schools, and so many other projects that I am so proud of having a hand in. There are too many to list throughout a 20+ year career, but Baldwin Prep is particularly special to me. The entire project team is excited about what this can do for the students, the industry, and the area. The educators, faculty, board, and design team all have a passion for this project, and it’s contagious. This project has had amazing support from every level. We all feel like we’re part of something that will have an incredible impact on the future—and we definitely feel as though we’re building a legacy here.” FEBRUARY 2024

The youth of Today —and Tomorrow STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
W
hen the Boys & Girls Clubs of America was first created in 1860, the four women who founded the organization did so with a vision of giving boys who roamed the streets a positive alternative that would keep them out of prison and other dangerous situations.
More than 150 years later, the need for those positive alternatives has not only remained but increased. Large cities are especially in need, but even on the outskirts of those major metropolises are youth who seek the kind of support that organizations like this can provide. Seeing this need in Fairhope, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Baldwin County constructed an 11,000-square-foot building in the city in 1996, expressly for the use of the club and its members. Less than a year later, the facility was renamed the Rotary Boys & Girls Club in recognition of the generosity of the Rotary Clubs of Fairhope and Point Clear, whose contributions helped pay the construction debt on the facility over the course of three years. In total, the amount came to about $100,000. Over the next decade, both the Fairhope and Point Clear Rotary Clubs continued to support the youth club. When the Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama notified the Fairhope Rotary Boys & Girls Club that they would be closing in 2009, the volunteers and staff of the Fairhope Rotary Boys & Girls Club decided to reorganize as the Fairhope-Point Clear Rotary Youth Programs, Inc.—more commonly referred to simply as the Rotary Youth 26

Club—knowing that there was a large need in the community for this program. “When the Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama shut down operation throughout all of Baldwin County, our doors never closed,” says Charles Durgin, Jr., Executive Director of Fairhope-Point Clear Rotary Youth Club. “The Rotary knew how important it was to keep this program going, and we were determined to do so, for the sake of our area youth.” Annually, the Rotary Youth Club works with approximately 310 underserved school age kids in the Fairhope school feeder pattern through their afterschool and summer programs. In a city of roughly 24,000 people, that number demonstrates the glaring need for the club’s programs—and that need will only continue to grow as the population increases. “The Fairhope community has grown and changed immensely since the club was first formed,” Durgin says. “And throughout the years and through those changes and challenges that have come with them, the Rotary Youth Club has changed for the better. We are more family- and community-oriented, and education is one of our main focuses. These changes were much needed for the growth of the club and the community. Through much collaboration with the schools and other organizations, we determined the needs of not only the kids but the whole family. In reality, the needs of the community haven’t changed much; but they have become more evident and more pressing.”
As a non-profit, funding for the Rotary Youth Club comes from local civic groups—including the three local Rotary Clubs—as well as the City of Fairhope and the generosity of private citizens who recognize the need for its services. “Some of the greatest challenges we face are, of course, money—which is always a need for any service organization—but also our ability to reach more and do more for our community,” says Durgin. “Our growth is based mostly on word of mouth, and being able to do more comes with the challenge of people knowing who we are and what we do.” What they do is provide stability, direction, support, and a safe, fun learning environment for area youth—which bears a great impact on the health of the community, both now and in the future. “We give them a place to connect with others, in and out of the Fairhope community,” says Durgin. “The Rotary Youth Club’s goal is to give these young people the tools they need to become productive and caring citizens and to give back some of what they have been given. Our hope is that the program continues to grow and do good work and that we, as an organization, continue to make positive changes in the lives of young people in the Fairhope community.”

One morning in 2020, Jake was minding his own
business, enjoying breakfast at a restaurant in Arcata, California,” Lisa begins. “Halfway through his biscuits and gravy, a friend of mine approached him to try and set him up with me. After we made eye contact across the room and saw that we were both equally embarrassed, Jake tried to explain that he was already seeing someone—and she worked at the restaurant.”
A few months later when Jake was single, the two of them ended up at the same concert and hit it off. Unfortunately, Jake did not quite catch on to Lisa’s suggestion that they spend more time together. It wasn’t until a mutual friend’s party that Lisa and Jake once again found one another—along with their undeniable chemistry. After securing Lisa’s number, Jake made sure they saw each other again…And they continued to see one another until Jake was send to Mobile with his work for the Coast Guard. Over the next few months, they stayed in touch; and Lisa made several trips to Mobile to see Jake. Then, in February of 2021, Lisa moved from California to Alabama. Taco Tuesdays, beach days, beers at the local breweries, and “French fry dinners” were all part of the magic that combined to make Lisa and Jake realize that they wanted forever with one another. On June 21, 2022, Jake made it official when he popped the question. Almost a year later, on April 1, 2023, the couple were married at Fort Conde Inn in Mobile, before joining their guests for an on-site reception—all part of an unforgettable evening that had some funny moments along the way. “I fell pretty hard on the dance floor—twice!” Lisa laughs. Whatever the years bring, the couple know that they have one another to lean on…And it all started with biscuits and gravy. 38

Matchmaking has a long and glorious (sometimes yes, sometimes
no) history in many cultures, and as a self-proclaimed matchmaker, Ashley Ollinger Jones had her sights set on two people she thought would be perfect for one another. In June of 2022, those two people came together for their first date—keeping Ashley’s near-perfect track record of success intact. Both widowed, Ashley’s cousin Mechell Ollinger and Charles Hodges Harty III had quite a lot in common: Each loved to play golf and garden, they were both devout Catholics and their personalities were similar. From their first date in June, the pair were pretty much an item—and “smitten after only a few months of dating,” as Mechell says.
“Smitten” as they were, it was little wonder that the couple wasted no time in taking their relationship to the next phase. Nine months after meeting, Hodges took Mechell to Gulf Shores for a weekend getaway. After a lovely dinner and cocktails on a balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Hodges used their beautiful location as a backdrop for his proposal.

On June 10, 2023, just three months after their engagement, Mechell wore a short-sleeved tea-length white lace dress to walk down the aisle at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fairhope, Alabama, arm-inarm with her two daughters, to meet Hodges at the altar. After being pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception at Mechell’s condo at Magnolia Trace in Point Clear, Alabama,

Making the day even more special were a few details that Mechell and Hodges will never forget: “Ashley is a very gifted vocalist, and she sang at my granddaughter’s funeral when she passed away unexpectedly at three months old,” explains Mechell. “She also sang at my late husband’s funeral as well as Hodges’s late wife’s funeral. We thought it would bring a happy note of closure to have her sing at our wedding.” Both of Mechell’s daughters served as co-maids-of-honor, and Hodges son was best man. The couple honeymooned for two weeks on a cruise along the Rhine River and spent four days in Paris before returning home to Fairhope.

At
four and five years old, Marissa Talbot and Colby Tyler were far too young when they met to imagine they’d fall in love after being reunited as adults, years later. “We’d lost touch with each other somewhere around 8th grade, even though Colby and my brother stayed friends,” Marissa explains. They reconnected by chance in October of 2022, at a mutual friend’s wedding. “I’d never thought of him being anything other than my brother’s annoying friend, but he offered me a ride home after the wedding, and we spent hours just talking and catching up on life,” Marissa recalls. “Before he left, Colby told me he would be back for Christmas and promised to take me on a proper date.” By January of 2023, the two had officially begun dating— much of it long distance, due to Colby’s service in the Air Force—and by six months, both Colby and Marissa knew that their prayers for their futures had been answered in bringing them together. “Colby took me to the park where we’d had our second date,” Marissa says. “We drove out there and went for a walk, and he proposed by the water. He even had my best friend hiding out to capture our special moment!” Three months later, on November 12th, 2023, Marissa wore a beautiful v-neck gown as she walked down the aisle at Hatcher Farms Venue in Mobile, Alabama, to meet Colby at the altar in the very same place that they’d reconnected, less than a year before. With 100 of their loved ones gathered in witness, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married before joining their guests for an on-site reception catered by Taco Mama—during which time Marissa made a unique wardrobe change. “An hour or so into the reception, I just wanted to dance and have fun, so I changed into jeans and a T-shirt,” she laughs. After cutting into a three-tier vanilla cake adorned with blue and white flowers, the newly married Tylers took their leave to start their new life together. Now home in Melbourne, Florida, they still have their honeymoon to look forward to…eventually.

ourtney Duval and Brandon Brown have known each other through growing pains and awkward teen years, through ups and downs and the changes of becoming adults. And through it all, friendship grew to love. “We’ve known each other since we were kids in Sunday school,” explains Courtney. “We became good friends, and then I went through a shy teenager phase where I couldn’t talk to him. He thought it meant I didn’t like him. Then, in 2016, we started to flirt with each other at a church lunch and then began talking every day. It took me six months to work up the nerve to tell him I liked him. I brought sour Skittles— his favorite candy—to church for him, thinking it would make him fall in love. He invited me to one of his baseball games, where he asked me to be his girlfriend.” Five years later, Brandon asked her the question that changed her life. “He’d invited both his family and mine on a trip to Bellingrath Gardens,” Courtney says. “The cover story was that we were taking photos with his family. He picked Bellingrath because I love the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. My engagement ring is even from the ‘Belle collection,’ with an enchanted rose hidden underneath. He said his idea was to ‘keep the theme going’ by proposing in the rose gardens. It was absolutely beautiful!” Once again surrounded by beauty, Courtney walked down the aisle at Bella Sera Gardens in Loxley, Alabama, wearing a custom gown with cap sleeves and lace detailing to meet Brandon at the altar. Surrounded by 100 of their loved ones, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married before joining their guests for an on-site reception. After dining, dancing, cutting the cake and an oops moment where Courtney slipped on the back of her dress and sat laughing at herself on the dance floor, the couple were sent to start their honeymoon at Disney. Now home in Loxley, the Browns are letting their fairytale continue to unfold.

Coming from families where horses have always been a
part of everyday life, Texas girl Kamryn Clark and Alabama boy Cade Shepard were almost destined to meet—and so they did. Cade, an accomplished cutting horse trainer, was a constant at horse shows where Kamryn’s friends and family were also showing, He became a familiar face, and then a friend. “The more we hung out, the more I started to like him and horses,” Kamryn, who now also rides cutting horses, recalls. “My mom always wanted me to be with Cade because he was such a good kid, so we pretty much started dating when we were about 13 years old.” Over the next eight years, the two grew up—and further in love—together, continuing to date despite the distance between them. “It was really tough,” Kamryn says. “I visited him a lot over the years in Summerdale. I would help them at the barn every day and never wanted to go home. Eventually, I moved there full-time after begging my parents.” Young though they were, the couple knew that they had found their soulmates in one another, and in 2022, Cade made their bond one to last for eternity. “I’d mentioned getting engaged a lot,” Kamryn says. “Still, I really didn't know it was coming when it happened. We went to New Orleans with friends and family, and while we were there, Cade proposed at the Roosevelt Hotel. It was absolutely beautiful.” Just shy of a year later, Kamryn walked down the aisle at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope, Alabama, on November 4, 2023, wearing a beautiful gown with a fitted bodice and open back, with a lace detailed train. After exchanging vows and rings carried down the aisle by Kamryn’s dog Ross, the couple were pronounced married and joined their 230 guests for a reception on the grounds. After enjoying a delicious array of Southern comfort-meets Gulf Coast food, the newlyweds cut into their cake and were sent off to start their new life together as husband and wife. Now, they are building their first home in Summerdale, Alabama, and traveling the country doing what they love.

N
either of them being morning people, it took a lot of effort for Sydney Weets and Mike Reed to have the wherewithal to say “good morning” to one another each time Mike came in to make sales calls at her workplace. By the end of each of those sales calls, however, both were chattier and would have full conversations—which, over time, turned into friendship. Two years of chatting later, Mike asked for Sydney’s Snapchat handle.
“Everyone told us that we would be perfect together, and they could see we liked each other,” says Sydney. “We decided to see if what everyone told us was true—and it definitely was! We haven’t gone a day without speaking or spending time together since.” Eventually, Mike asked Sydney something much more important than add me on Snapchat. “We were in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with friends, and Mike had told me that he wanted to take me to breakfast the next morning,” Sydney recalls. “We had breakfast and walked to the skylift to go to the top of the mountain. Once we got there, we made our way to the lookout spot. As I was looking out, I turned around and found Mike on one knee with all our friends videoing us and holding the banner Mike had made, asking me to marry him.” 52

Marking the two-year anniversary of their first date, Sydney walked down the aisle at the Veranda at the Preserve in Elberta, Alabama, on November 17, 2023, to meet Mike at the altar. After being pronounced married, the couple joined their 300 guests for an onsite reception. Having dined, danced and cut into their three-tier naked cake, they drove off in Sydney’s parents’ 1940 Chevy. Sort of. “My dad had driven it up and left it running to make it easier for us—but by the time we were ready to leave, the battery had died,” Sydney laughs. “So, a few people pushed it to make it look like we were driving it in the video. Home in Foley, Alabama, the newlyweds are looking forward to a mini-moon during Mardi Gras and a honeymoon at their one-year anniversary.

Hundreds of participants joined Fairhope Sunset Rotary Club for the annual Race for The Rest of Us – 0.5K Classic. The run started and ended at Fairhope’s Bay Breeze Cafe, and the 1/3 mile course trailed through Downtown Fairhope. Many of those that participated added to the fun by dressing in great costumes.

ompleted in December of 2022, the Ziegler home in Perdido Key may not have had much time for its walls to weather or its floors to show the wear of years, but owners Sherri and Joey have still made memories in their year of living there, celebrating their first Christmas and soaking in the sight of the sunrises and sunsets as they wash over the sky.
“They are stunning,” says Sherri, a real estate agent with Levin Rinke Realty, while Joey is the mortgage manager for Regions Mortgage in Pensacola. “It’s very relaxing and peaceful here, and we truly love everything about it. But most of all, I would say creating memories with our family and friends is what truly makes it wonderful.”

Boasting 4,488 square feet with 14 rooms in total including five bedrooms and four baths, the West Indies-style home comprises three levels, with two levels of living spaces built on top of pilings and a garage level. Built by Thomas Cutts Construction, the exterior is white board and batten offset with a dark bronze metal roof and dark bronze accents. Continuing the theme, the porch ceilings are ebony stained tongue and groove, with matching Bahama shutters and corbels that add to the West Indies look of the home, while gas lanterns on the front porch give the home a hint of Southern charm. “The overall design of the home is striking to people, and the location of it being situated on the intercoastal waterway overlooking Johnson's Beach with Gulf views and on a private canal in Grande Lagoon make it even more special,” says Sherri. “We love the water and enjoy boating, which is why we were so interested in this particular location. The proximity to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and also Pensacola by boat, played a large part, as well. It's a plus that we get to see the Blue Angels fly from our back porch when they have a show or practice their maneuvers.”

Inside, the interior has a modern flare, created by Sherri’s vision and the expertise of V Home & Interiors in Mandeville. “They helped us in selecting the furnishings and lighting for our bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen,” she says. “They offer beautiful furnishings and accessories and are very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. This home is made up of everything that we both love and enjoy.” A particular favorite in the house is the “man cave”—which, according to Sherri, was the inspiration for the color scheme throughout the home. “I wanted a masculine, speak-easy vibe that is warm and inviting.” With its charcoal walls, raw wood coffered ceilings, white oak flooring and massive chandelier, the room is precisely that—masculine in feel without being intimidatingly so, rather feeling cozy in its monochromatism and elegant finishes. “I knew I wanted to paint the space black before we even built the home,” Sherri explains. “Once the room was painted, it created the theme for the interior. There is a touch of black in each room of the home.”

Indeed, it does, though black features were artfully chosen for each space in a way that keeps the color from being overwhelming or heavy. In the kitchen, white custom cabinetry traces along the back wall of the space, juxtaposing a coal black center island and matching cabinetry on a perpendicular wall. Calacatta Trevi quartz countertops with full height splash add a cool sleekness, contrasted by a suite of ZLine appliances in black stainless with champagne bronze accents and a black stainless-steel sink. “We love the layout and open design of the kitchen,” says Sherri. “The large island makes cooking and entertaining so much fun.”
The butler's pantry and laundry rooms are additional favorite spaces in the house, respectively making morning wake ups easier with a built-in Wolf Coffee System and laundry tasks just a little less tedious. “I wanted a fun space in the laundry room and love how the tile design turned out,” says Sherri. “We carried that theme into the butler's pantry, bringing in warmth with the walnut countertop, and having all of the storage is a plus.”

In the master bedroom, a tongue and groove vaulted ceiling overhead seems purposefully incongruous to an opulent chandelier. “The chandelier is my favorite thing in the room, and it really helps to create that romantic atmosphere,” says Sherri. An adjoining sitting area with a vaulted ceiling and a bank of windows offer the perfect space to read or enjoy the view. The master closet was designed to meet the couple’s specific needs, complete with a large island with hidden doors for laundry hampers. In the master bath, large format black veined marble tile flows into a walk-in shower, and a window offers natural light just above the freestanding tub. “We really enjoy the view while we’re getting ready,” says Sherri. “It’s really peaceful.”

The Tensaw Delta Waterfowl Bourbon Bash at Belforest Pointe included a bourbon tasting, delicious catered meal and live music. Guests also had many opportunities to walk away with hunting gear, firearms, and more on the raffles. Winning silent and live auction bidders went home with trips to destinations including Italy and Argentina, and one lucky winner went home with a “mystery safe” full of surprises that was valued at over five thousand dollars.

CANDACE BROUGHTON Ever since I was a child, there hasn’t been a time that I can recall not loving art. I took art classes all through high school, and most of my electives while attending Springhill College, where I graduated with a B.A. in Business, were art related. eing a wedding and event planner as well as the owner of Jenna Laine Weddings, The Balcony, and The Venue Fairhope, Jenna Rachal has her work cut out for her, with a schedule that revolves around other people’s special occasions. Balancing that with being a wife and a mother of a young daughter and son, she often feels the pressures of keeping all the balls from dropping. Fortunately, Rachal’s husband works with her as head of operations at The Venue Fairhope and The Balcony and is a big supporter in work and in life—and the village she’s built has also helped her juggling game.

“It definitely takes a lot of organization and a great team around you, and I certainly do not do it all alone,” she says. “In addition to my husband, I have the help of my sister-in-law and mother as well as two employees, Katie and Leslie, who we couldn't survive without. There are times when I feel like I’m acing it and other times when I feel as though I’m definitely not. It’s important to me that I arrange my work schedule around what's most important in my life, and owning my own businesses gives me that flexibility. I drop the kids at school and often play tennis in the morning—my hour of me-time—and then sit down at a computer and don’t stand up until it's time for the carline. I make time to attend school parent meetings or grab a quick lunch with other mom friends or make a point for wine nights throughout the year with the girls. All these things together make work-life balance happen. It hasn’t always been that way, but as my kids have gotten older, 'life' has taken more of a precedence, and I make work revolve around me instead of letting it control me.” Even in the times when she needs help to make it all run smoothly, Rachal sees the importance of working and showing that example to her kids. “I think being a working mom is a great thing for my kids to see— especially my daughter,” she says. “I think demonstrating a good work ethic is also important for them as they grow up. When you have kids, it’s important to teach them that, when you want to do something and be the best that you can be, you have to put forth the effort.”

As her young ones grow into adulthood, Rachal wants them to always remember the ways in which she supported their dreams and how she worked in order to be able to support those dreams financially. “I also want them to look back on memories of the time I spent taking them to camps, lessons, workout sessions, quizzing them, or helping them memorize lines when they wanted to do something or chase a goal,” she says. “I want them to know they have my support and that they always will.” Rachal and her family are currently on a mission to visit all US National Parks and have visited three National Parks in the last eighteen months. “That may only be a few, but we want to hit them all,” she says. “We all love the outdoors, hiking, and traveling. I feel these trips will be memorable for years and years, and they’re great experiences for both my daughter and son as well as something my husband and I both enjoy—which makes it all the better.”

Members of the Sonnenschein (Sunshine) Region of the Porsche Club of America came together to deliver hundreds of toys to Fairhope Rotary Youth Club for the RYC Christmas Party.
