I loved working with the team at Coastal Stone & Cabinetry. It was the easiest part of building our house. They provided all of the kitchen cabinetry, vanities, countertops, flooring and tile patterns, and it looks fabulous. One stop shop! I would definitely recommend Coastal Stone & Cabinetry for all of your needs.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

“Turning

Ideas into Reality”

For over 25 years, Gulf States Real Estate and our affiliate companies have been providing commercial and residential real estate brokerage, property management, construction, and development services to our clients. I would like to say that this was all my idea, but it was not. Over the years, our clients challenged us to expand our service mix to better meet their needs.

Certainly, it was not an easy task to build a TEAM of individuals with diverse talents, backgrounds and experiences. However, with the right people, we have been able to produce some incredible projects for our clients and within the communities where we are. We are now active in over a dozen states around the U.S. Our geographic diversity combined with our unique product mix have proven to be essential in navigating natural disasters, pandemics, major shifts in business climates, and increasing governmental regulations.

I am so proud of our team! I want to thank them and our clients for their contributions and support. Looking forward with extreme confidence to “Turning Ideas Into Reality” for the next quarter century and beyond. -Mike Saucier, President

JERRY

JOHNSON

With a tenure in office that began in 2012, Jerry Johnson has seen a great deal of change to the city of Orange Beach in the last 12 years.

The University of Alabama graduate obtained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and worked for Alabama Power (APCO) for 32 years before retiring in 2005. “The leadership positions I worked in helped me determine my leadership style, and I chose to be a servant leader, helping others,” says Johnson. “My philosophy was always to listen and work with people to help them achieve the best for themselves, their families, and APCO.”

Johnson still uses these leadership principles on the Orange Beach City Council, which he joined in 2012. Having attended Fairhope, Daphne, Gulf

Shores, Foley and Orange Beach Council meetings between 2011 and 2012, Johnson recognized a need for new leadership in Orange Beach and started his campaign in March of 2012. He was elected in August of 2012 and has held the position since.

“I would like to think I brought new leadership to our city—leadership that listens to our residents and continues to support a clean, family-friendly city that stands on the Constitution of our great nation,” says Johnson. “I also think that, to make the Alabama Gulf Coast a true gem, the three cities of Gulf Shores, Foley and Orange Beach must work together seamlessly.

“I have really enjoyed serving the residents of Orange Beach in Place 3 over the past 12 years,” he continues. “This was my first time being elected to a public office. I was on a learning curve for about a year; however, I always felt I was up to the task. A dear friend, Al Bradley, was also elected in 2012, and he asked me what principles we were going to stand on. We both decided we would protect existing neighborhoods by not up-zoning in residential areas and prohibiting short-term rentals in zone RS1. We

lost Al in 2014; however, his leadership has helped create safe and residentially friendly neighborhoods for the past ten years.”

Over his twelve years in City Council, Johnson is proud to have been a part of a number of initiatives including the building of the Coastal Arts Center, starting full-time ambulance service in Orange Beach, installing high-speed fiber internet connections in every neighborhood within the city, voting to separate from Baldwin County Schools and create the Orange Beach City School system, building a new fire station across from the Wharf, regular beach cleanups and voting to give local police and fire departments the best equipment available to save lives.

Johnson has been married to his wife, Yolanda, for 28 years. In his free time, he loves photography, hiking, biking and Lady Makos Softball as well as boys’ baseball and youth basketball.

ATTORNEY AT LAW

Orange Beach resident Lori Cheney’s journey into the realm of real estate law was not a conventional one. Armed with academic excellence from the University of South Alabama School of Business, with a degree in Operations Systems Management, and the University of Alabama School of Law, where she graduated Cum Laude in 1993, she was well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the legal world.

CHENEY

What makes you different from other Real Estate Attorneys?

Concentrating on document preparation for title companies and facilitating IRC §1031 tax deferred exchanges allow me to provide essential support to closing agents, realtors, and their clients. The real estate industry moves swiftly, and I take pride in being available at a moment's notice to assist.

What drove you to this career path?

After finishing law school, I completed a judicial clerkship then went into civil litigation. However, drawn to the business aspects of law and seeking greater flexibility as a young mother, I transitioned to the real estate industry. Encouragement from my sister, a realtor, and a friend who was a closing agent at Gulf Shores Title, influenced my career shift.

What do you most enjoy about working in the field?

Over the years, I have cultivated valuable relationships with closing agents and realtors, locally and beyond, through my role as a Qualified Intermediary for §1031 Tax-Deferred Exchanges. I am grateful for the collaborative nature of the industry and cherish the opportunity to contribute to the process from contract to closing. My concentration on tax-deferred exchanges enables me to assist investors in growing their portfolios by deferring taxes, ultimately helping them achieve their financial objectives. Assisting title companies and acting as a Qualified Intermediary has been immensely rewarding, allowing me to serve the Gulf Coast community for over 25 years.

Since 2007, Sherri has been a licensed Real Estate Agent in Florida and acquired her Alabama license in 2023. At Levin Rinke Realty, she proudly received the 2023 Silver Production Award. Before her real estate career, Sherri owned I Showhomes, a franchise specializing in staging vacant homes for sale. Her excellence in this role earned her the top new franchise award in her inaugural year, serving Perdido Key to Port St. Joe. Additionally, she holds certifications as a Military Relocation Specialist, Florida Military Specialist, and Leading RE Relocation Specialist. She also provides valuable assistance to clients in design and selection for new construction projects.

What makes you different from other real estate agents?

My experience in home staging and design provides me with a unique perspective when it comes to selling real estate. This perspective sets me apart and gives me a leading edge in the industry.

How did you get started?

My journey in real estate began during the challenging times of the market downturn in 2007. Seeking opportunities amidst the adversity, I initially obtained my license to market my home staging company to fellow agents and homeowners. This strategic move eventually led me to transition into a full-time career in selling real estate.

Do you have a special niche?

My primary focus is as a listing agent, specializing in serving sellers within the Luxury Market. My expertise lies in selling waterfront homes and luxury properties within gated communities. I understand the unique demands of these exclusive markets and have the skills and resources to effectively market and sell high-end properties.

What makes you stand out as a realtor?

I excel in understanding my clients’ motivations, or “their WHY,” and guide them with a personalized game plan. This holistic approach to real estate extends beyond transactions, helping clients navigate the home-buying process with clarity and confidence.

What is your driving force?

Personal experiences and my girls. You are looking at someone who was briefly homeless as an adolescent, who later achieved the American Dream of Homeownership. For me, it's incredibly rewarding and inspiring to assist and witness clients achieve their dream of homeownership. It's what I love most about being a realtor. Additionally, for my daughters, Sasha, Gabrielle, and Kayla - I want them to see themselves in me and know that they are enough, that they belong, and are worthy of all that life has to offer.

What do you most enjoy about working in the field?

The best part of being a realtor is the chance to connect with people and guide them through lifechanging moments. It's incredibly fulfilling to see clients realize their dream of owning a home and to help them navigate the path to wealth through real estate investing.

Describe the type of client you serve most frequently. What is your niche in real estate and Why?

While I have a passion for assisting first-time homeowners and novice investors, my unique niche in real estate lies in new construction development—a specialty that found me organically. Thriving behind the scenes in collaboration with developers to materialize their visions enables me to excel in project management and resonates with my creative instincts.

FAMILY FUN FUELED

Built in 2020, the home comprises 3887 square feet of living space to include five bedrooms and four and a half baths. Inside, the towering windows allow generous light into the homes spacious rooms and open floorplan. Immediately demanding attention overhead in the living room, coffered ceilings seem almost to mirror the casements of the windows at the back of the home, overlooking the backyard. Grounded in medium-toned white oak plank flooring that runs throughout the home, the home bears a cohesive aesthetic of modern luxury set against a canvas of creams and whites that allow Mandi’s love of Gilded Age design and French influence to shine through. “I love making things pretty,” says Mandi, who homeschools her four children in the home, while her husband, Brandon, is the owner of Roof Guardian, LLC. “It’s always been my passion, to create beauty, peace, and harmony in my surroundings. That love of beautiful things is evident throughout the home in its décor, luxurious finishes and styling. The kitchen, one of the most used spaces for the large Buie family, is particularly note worthy for its white custom cabinetry along the perimeter of its L-shaped space, with backlighting in the glass-fronted side cabinetry and a striking tiled backsplash. Dual islands offer contrast, with a dove grey center island and a far island in black cabinetry—all crowned with Calcutta marble. Thermador appliances add a sleek touch, with stunning twin beaded chandeliers hanging overhead.

AMobile native, Amber spent her childhood visiting Gulf Coast beaches, harboring dreams of someday living by the coast. As a young adult, she developed a keen interest in home architecture and design, foreseeing a career in real estate. Encouraged by Mickie Russell, a local large real estate firm owner, Amber eventually entered the field. After relocating to the Eastern Shore to start her family, she temporarily set aside her real estate aspirations. However, years later, reconnecting with Mickie reignited her passion.

Over her initial years in the industry, Amber achieved numerous company records and later seized an opportunity to establish a new office in Orange Beach. As a broker, she mentored and cultivated agents who became top producers. Transitioning into vacation rentals, she expanded her expertise. Today, Amber actively participates with The Children's Rescue Initiative (CRI) alongside her fiancé. Recently, they hosted a gala in Orange Beach that raised over one-hundred and thirty thousand dollars, to fund operations to rescue women and children from modern-day slavery.

What makes you different from other realtors? How do you stand out?

I have introduced many friends and family members to this profession and have mentored many young individuals along the way. I take immense pride in the relationships I have cultivated over my lifetime. It's a common refrain that people often tell me, “You seem to know everyone.”

How long have you been in real estate and what drove you to this career?

For the past decade, it was natural for me, my passion has always been centered around assisting others.

Describe the type of client you serve most frequently.

Most of my clients are retirees or investors, although I love first time home buyers.

Do you have a special niche? Why?

As a native of Mobile who has resided on the Eastern Shore for over two decades and now for the past five years on the coast, I possess extensive knowledge of the Gulf Coast market. Additionally, with a background in accounting, I am highly proficient with numbers.

Over the last two years, the family have made the spaces theirs, from the well-appointed playrooms to Mandi’s impressive “Queen bedroom” closet. “When we first moved back to Louisiana from Evansville, Indiana, where we’d been living, we went to the Parade of Homes,” says the Chalmette native. “Walking into a Troyer Builders home was love at first sight, so when this house became available in Madisonville, we just felt that it was meant to be. We’ve only lived in this house for two years, but we definitely love sitting on the patio, watching the girls on the trampoline, and our youngest dig in the dirt and ride his four-wheeler. I love being upstairs when time stands still for a bit, doing schoolwork on the floor with the younger three of them, and my oldest allows his dad and me to hang out with him sometimes in his man cave for a little while.”

Leveraging his extensive knowledge of the local Real Estate market and strong negotiation skills, Colton Crabtree provides a professional and efficient Real Estate Experience for those looking to buy or sell properties on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Colton’s ambition to excel in sales led him to Mississippi State University, where he refined his expertise, readying himself to step into a dynamic family legacy as an industry leader.

How did you decide Real Estate was for you?

Having always been drawn to sales, I focused on selecting a career path that would allow me no limits. I chose Real Estate as my focus after witnessing the market’s rapid growth in Baldwin County. My sales ambition paired with my family’s support further motivated me to establish my career and home on the Gulf Coast and pursue my ambitions in Real Estate.

Do you have a niche? Why?

Honesty. Transparency is the key to ultimate success in any thriving industry. This paradise comes with a caveat, the news I share with clients may not always be welcome. Regardless, I believe in being completely open and honest with my clients, whether the news is positive or negative. It really is the best way to conduct business.

Who was a mentor to you?

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have Ken Crabtree, my Father, and mentor, to guide me in my Real Estate career. With his wealth of experience and expertise, gained over more than two decades in the industry, he has provided me with indispensable insights, values, and advice. His mentorship has helped me to fast-track my learning curve and has given me the confidence to tackle any challenges that come my way.

Ken Crabtree boasts an impressive background in sales, complemented by an unparalleled map of experience and in-depth knowledge of the industry, making him a Real Estate phenomenon with an unforgettable track record of sales and closings across various properties, including large developments, commercial and residential properties, plus local landmarks. Drawing from his wealth of experience over the years, and genealogy he brings honesty, integrity, and a commitment to delivering value to every project.

What drove you to this career?

I decided to sell a premium, tangible product, drawing from my Daddy’s stories of his brother Rudolf’s accomplishments in land sales during the 1970s. Both Momma and Daddy pushed me into sales from an early age and after years of extensive Big City sales perfecting from Dallas, Atlanta, and New York in the garment business I seized the opportunity to establish myself in this ever-growing coastal area over twenty- one years ago.

What did you learn the most in your time in sales that you practice in real estate?

Being transparent with people will take you a lot further than only revealing the pretty side of things. When I am upfront and honest from the start with my clients my rapport becomes what I am known for and I keep good customers coming back time and time again.

What do you enjoy the most about real estate?

Two decades in the business taught me the importance of leaving a legacy that would endure. In the early years, I found happiness in exceeding the expectations of my deserving clients - people who had worked tirelessly to achieve success and sought to invest in a stunning sanctuary. Today, I am humbled to say that my proudest achievement is working alongside my son, Colton Crabtree, and seeing him flourish as a rising star in the industry.

ON THE MANOR LAGOON

This luxurious waterfront Italian-style villa with guest house was designed by Dial Architects using dac-art-block construction that resembles Italian limestone. Twice featured in Coastal Living Magazine, this villa exudes elegance. The stately property highlights numerous impressive features including a hand-painted frieze in the main house, exquisite handblown Murano chandeliers, beamed ceilings in the primary suite, hand-painted cement tile flooring, and bronze exterior handrails. The living area opens to a covered porch and open deck overlooking Little Lagoon with 180-degree views to catch the perfect sunrise or sunset.

The guest house is equally remarkable with a fully equipped kitchen, hand-painted decorative beams, and a mosaic tile shower. Located on nearly one acre, the grounds are splendid. Intentionally designed and cared for by a retired head horticulturist from Calloway Gardens, the remarkable estate includes satsumas, lemons, and scuppernongs, and for contemplative days, a quiet garden nestled between the vegetable and butterfly gardens.

The grounds include one hundred feet on Little Lagoon with stone steps leading into the water. An oversized garage and a large above-ground basement with ample shelving for storage are bonuses to this exquisite property. This stunning, one-of-a-kind manor is ideal for discerning buyers.

AN EVENING WITH HEART

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S ART FOR HEART GALA

With the continuing battle against heart disease and cardiovascular-related deaths still raging, the American Heart Association’s work is as important now as it has always been. Thirty-two years ago when the Art for Heart Gala was first instituted in 1992, technologies and treatment were vastly different—but the need to reach greater heights in medicine and increase awareness and prevention remains the same.

A premier event benefiting the American Heart Association, the Art for Heart Gala raises funds for education and research specific to cardiovascular disease and stroke. The catered evening boasts a celebratory atmosphere offering delicious food, entertainment, and a silent and live auction. Attracting an average of five hundred ticket holders, millions of dollars have been raised over the past 32 years by the gala. “As a result of the funding made available by the Art for Heart Gala, more parents watch their children graduate from high school, more grandparents have been able to spend time with their grandchildren and fewer babies and kids have lost their lives to congenital heart defects,” says Tonia

Turner, owner of Tonia Turner Events and Design and co-chair of this year’s event along with Marlo Webb, owner of High Cotton Bath Co.

This year's honoree, Dr. Todd Tobiassen, was commemorated posthumously in a beautiful tribute to his life. He is survived by his cherished wife, Deirdre, and their beloved children, Thor and Ava.

During his life, Dr. Tobiassen exemplified his title as a medical professional as well as that of “survivor.”

After experiencing an acute myocardial infarction on April 5, 2023, Dr. Tobiassen was resuscitated in the ER and underwent subsequent cardiac catheterization, which revealed blocked arteries and necessitated an emergency cardiac bypass.

Aside from his own personal experience with a cardiovascular event, Dr. Tobiassen spent nearly three decades as an emergency physician—time which instilled in him a desire to advocate for initiatives such as the Art for Heart program, which educates communities about early symptoms and interventions for heart disease with the goal of expediting cardiac intervention, reducing sudden cardiac death risk and minimizing damage to the heart muscle.

Having survived his own trauma, Dr. Tobiassen

stressed the critical importance of heeding heart disease symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention when they arise. To that end, the Art for Heart program provides vital recommendations for education and intervention, both of which save lives. His personal experience uniquely positioned Dr. Tobiassen to relate with his patients, and he continually stressed the need to address cardiac risk

factors and prioritize heart health. Dr. Tobiassen hoped to motivate others to discuss risk factors with their physicians and undergo cardiac screening when necessary and was committed to using his own testimony to save lives and prevent others from similar experiences, emphasizing the importance of proactive heart care and the impact of such early intervention initiatives as the Art for Heart program.

What makes you stand out as a broker?

My parents bought their first beach cottage when I was just 9 months old. My upbringing in a family immersed in real estate investing has endowed me with a distinct perspective on the industry. This background empowers me to guide clients in grasping the immediate and long-term benefits of real estate investments. By elucidating both the broader advantages and finer details of properties, I set myself apart, providing clients with comprehensive insights to make informed decisions in a competitive market.

How long have you been in real estate and what drove you to this career?

With a familial background deeply rooted in real estate, entering the industry felt like a natural progression for me. Having grown up surrounded by the nuances of the business, I realized I had a head start compared to others. Actively involved in real estate for two decades, beginning with the management of my family’s vacation rental portfolio, I possess invaluable insights into buyer needs. As an avid real estate investor myself, I empathize with the anxieties of property ownership, constantly balancing mortgages with the anticipation of rental income.

What do you most enjoy about working in the field?

Receiving positive feedback from vacation guests, homeowners, team members, and vendors is immensely gratifying. When guests create unforgettable memories in a Harris Vacations property, we consider it a testament to our commitment to excellence. Hearing an owner express gratitude for early retirement due to property management is truly life-changing. Similarly, witnessing employees and agents’ enthusiasm for their roles is deeply rewarding as a business owner—it signifies that we're fostering a thriving and fulfilling work environment.

DAKOTA HEFLIN

SPLASH MASTER

As the Orange Beach Swim Team dives into a new season of swim and strives to new levels of excellence, it does so under the watchful eye and experienced coaching of Dakota Heflin, whose swim career began in early childhood.

Heflin began to compete at the age of six for the Sarasota YMCA Sharks and did so throughout graduating high school. She qualified as a Junior Olympian’ by the age of eight and found her skill in breaststroke and distance freestyle. In high school, she swam mostly sprint breaststroke and freestyle events and was also a Regional State Qualifier in the 50- and 100- meter breaststroke as well as 50and 100-meter freestyle.

“What I love most about swimming is the challenge, the drive, and the confidence it gives,” says Heflin, who honed her natural talent until it took her all the way to competing

in the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) in her early twenties. “I don't think there’s another sport out there that shapes such incredible individuals because of the commitment and the work ethic required to succeed. You can miss a day of practice in other sports or take some time off and fall right back into place, but miss one practice in this sport, and you feel like garbage. You must maintain your ability and your feel for the water. It's a lifestyle.”

In 2018, Heflin was living in Tennessee and began coaching locally for the Clarksville YMCA Barracudas as well as Oakland High School and at Excel Aquatics, where she eventually became Lead Age Group Coach and Swim School Director for Excel Aquatics' Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In 2020 when COVID hit, Heflin’s career in music was dealt a blow, but having to refocus

52 SOCIAL COASTAL PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW >>

reinforced in her the desire to coach and to have a career more conducive to time with her daughter.

Later moving back to the Alabama coast to be closer to family, Heflin joined the coaching staff at Gulf Shores Swim Team before earning the opportunity to build the Orange Beach Swim Team (OBST)—basically from square one, as the team is so new to the area. With such passion and experience, Heflin was hired at the beginning of 2024 by the City of Orange Beach to serve as coordinator for the city’s aquatics/swim team. “I could not be more thrilled about the opportunity!” she says. “We are building and branding from the ground up with this team, beginning with a summer league program with the ultimate goal of growing into a known, USA Swimming affiliated year-round team as soon as possible. I also would like to have a significant age group program

and be able to take a group of athletes to age group sectionals and beyond in the future. Without a solid age group program, there is no team because age groupers typically gain interest and hopefully commit and become junior and senior athletes.”

Josh and Reilly have a love story that began in high school, bloomed over the years, and culminated in a picturesque wedding filled with unforgettable moments.

High school sweethearts, Josh and Reilly first began dating during their junior year. Their romance ignited after they attended prom together in May of 2016, and from that moment on, they were inseparable. Over the next eight years, their love deepened as they navigated life's twists and turns together.

Josh had been patiently waiting for the perfect moment to propose, and it came during a dreamy trip to Tahiti. Sailing around Bora Bora, they landed on Marlon Brando’s private island, where Josh seized the opportunity to ask Reilly to spend forever with him. Surrounded by the beauty of the island paradise, Reilly joyfully accepted, knowing that Josh was

not only her partner but also her best friend and biggest supporter.

Their wedding day, held at the Beach Club Resort and Spa, was a reflection of their love story. Reilly's dress, a stunning creation from Kleinfeld Bridal in New York, featured a sheath cut with a lacy bodice and crepe material at the bottom. Dusty rose was the predominant color theme, with Reilly's bridesmaids donning dresses in the same hue.

Their ceremony was attended by one hundred of their closest family and friends, who witnessed heartfelt vows and shared in the joy of the newlyweds. One notable moment was when Reilly's mom surprised them with a live wedding artist during the reception, capturing the magic of the day in a unique way. To top it off, Reilly and her mom dazzled guests with a choreographed dance to "Dancing Queen," adding a touch of fun to the celebration.

Their cake, adorned with a cascading rose flower arrangement, was a beautiful centerpiece of the reception. And the menu featured a variety of cuisines, from chicken tenders to prime rib, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Following their dream wedding, Josh and Reilly jetted off to St. Lucia in the Caribbean for a romantic honeymoon. Now residing in Mobile, Alabama, they continue to cherish each other's company, knowing that their love story is truly one-of-a-kind.

MEAGAN HOVEN

Family is a big part of Meagan Hoven’s life—both professionally and personally.

Her work day involves wearing a lot of hats within her family’s businesses, Tacky Jack’s and Skipper Enterprises—the latter of which manages family land in addition to maintaining and building roads as well as executing controlled burns. “I tend to go where I’m needed,” says Hoven. “I’m part of the office management side as well as part of the company’s community involvement. I’ve done a little bit everything and even drove an off-road dump truck, hauling dirt to build roads, for a couple summers in high school.”

Now raising three girls with her husband, Kipp, Hoven adds the many hats of motherhood to her daily rotation. “Life is so busy!” she says. “It’s a juggling act. I’m always trying to plan and organize so that I maximize my time between work and family, but these categories tend to overlap, because I work in our family’s businesses. As busy as it can be, however, I think that my being a working mom shows my girls that you can work and still be a very involved parent. I hope they will eventually understand why I do all the planning and organizing that I do—so that I can do my best to get everything at work done and still be 100 percent present for my family.”

Being present for her three girls is important to Hoven—and her dedication to them is something that she hopes they always feel and remember. “I want them to be able to look back and remember me always being there when they needed me and know that I always will be there for them,” she says.
