Mayor Pro-Tem

JEFF BOYD

The lack of desire to run for political office is something that makes Jeff Boyd’s appointment as mayor protem of Orange Beach an interesting one. “I had no real interest in getting involved in politics,” says Boyd. “My goal has always been to be a great citizen and to raise kids to be incredible adults. I wanted Orange Beach to remain a place where my kids would want to return and raise their kids. But I truly felt if I was going to talk about issues and give input on issues, then I should step up to the plate and run for office to do my part.”

Boyd’s political career began when he was elected to the City Council in August 2012. “We each have our set of talents in which we enjoy and thrive, and my time, energy, and heart have been focused on the lobbying and political side of being

COMMUNITY LEADER

a city councilman,” he says. “As mayor pro-tem, I continue to work with many organizations at the County, State, and Federal level. I believe the more friends and the more contacts you have in various places, the better chance you have of finding and/or offering a guiding hand when needed.”

During his time in city government, Boyd has a number of goals he hopes to see realized. “I want to maintain the small town, safe, friendly, loving community attitude that we have right now and have always had,” he says. “We are 100 percent committed to our fire and police department, and we recently purchased three new ambulances to guarantee our citizens the fastest and best care. We have that same dedicated commitment to picking up refuse on the streets. Show me another city that keeps their streets as clean as ours. That attitude transcends across every department. To give our young kids a better future, our Expect Excellence program provides the best start, preparing them for middle and then high school. The goal of the entire council is to have the best school system in the Southern United States, and we’re working towards that.”

Additionally, Boyd chairs the Orange Beach Medical Authority and serves as a member of the Islands of Perdido Foundation. He is also active with The America First Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. and is a member of the GUMBO PAC. Outside of his roles with city government, he works for STERIS Corporation in Infection Prevention Technologies and has chaired and serves on many boards, including the Hope Foundation and the Field Advisory Committee for STERIS Corporation.

AUSTIN TANNER

“If God came down here with the box that had the reason for living in it, I’d like to find just two words: ‘The music.’ That would be neat.” – Garth Brooks, American Country music legend

The illustrious Mr. Brooks might have said it, but the sentiment is far from original. Music is, for many people, what it’s all about, and the same holds true for Mississippiborn Austin Tanner. “Music's always been my thing, right from the start,” says Tanner. “Growing up, my weekends and evenings were all about singing

and jamming in church and getting on Christian radio. Being from Southern Mississippi, Country music was everywhere; it's like part of the air you breathe. It just felt right, dreaming about making it big in the Country scene. Mixing Gospel with Country was like second nature to me, blending the vibes and the stories from both worlds.”

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
22 SOCIAL COASTAL
Photo by Angela Mott Photography Photo by CBNONE Video

That second nature has taken him far, as Tanner has cultivated a career in music as a singer and song writer whose collaborative efforts equal quite the resumé—not that it’s as straightforward as all that. In fact, before he began focusing his talents on music, the crooner followed his entrepreneurial drive to start his own company, Fortius Law Group, a firm dedicated to guiding property owners through the claims process and ensuring they receive proper support and beneficial outcomes.

As much as his work as CEO of his own company required, Tanner’s absolute love for writing music came flooding back when he wrote his wife a song for their wedding anniversary. Since then, Tanner has worked with Nashville greats, including multiward winning songwriters and musicians Brandon Breland, Levon Gray, Dallas Wilson and Aaron “The Chief'' Lamb as well as recording artist Filmore. Tanner’s music is produced by Grammy and multiplatinum award-winning producer Vinny Vinditto and recording artist Chris Daniel, with music videos by RIAA diamond

award-winning producer Sway Mendez and director Michael Patti.

“I've had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with a group of extraordinarily talented individuals in the music industry, each bringing their unique expertise and experience to the table,” says Tanner, noting that he and his team have written over 20 songs and plan to release a full album by the end of the year—all this on top of raising a family, running a company and being actively involved in the community through philanthropical work to support local charities.

“Writing songs is just telling the stories of our lives,” says Tanner, who recently celebrated his 16th wedding anniversary with his wife, Skyla. “You live something, you feel it deep down and then, boom, it turns into music. Country songs get real about everything: love, life, the good, the bad and everything in between. It's like sharing stories with friends. And the best part is when someone hears my song and says, ‘Hey, that's me; that's my life.’”

BANDIT

on the Water

As business partners, Bobby Wade and Chad Solomon spend a great deal of time together—and seem to enjoy that time. Being that both share a passion for deep sea fishing, it seemed only natural to buy a boat that the two co-own specifically for that purpose.

APRIL 2024 33
SOCIAL YACHTING

Purchased in 2022, the 2016 Viking Yacht 70 Convertible is used mainly for fishing, though Wade and Solomon usually spend one or two nights offshore on boat trips. In homage to the chain of Mexican restaurants that Wade owns, the friends named their yacht Bandito, which translates to “bandit” in Spanish.

Bandito is built for comfort and speed, with a majority of the construction being Carbon Kevlar to reduce weight for more speed. As far as comfort is concerned, the interior boasts a full kitchen with Cambria quartz countertops, Subzero fridge and freezer, stovetop, convection microwave and full liquor and wine cabinets, as well as internet and satellite TV. Perfectly suited for summer, seven air conditioning units keep its interior spaces cool, from the salon and kitchen to the four cabins and four and a half bathrooms. Adding an element of luxury is the spaciousness of the main cabins and the finishes, with rich teak detailing, trim work, and cabinetry.

We love spending time with family and friends on the boat,” Putting our kids behind the reel of a blue marlin never gets old, and they all love it.”

“We love spending time with family and friends on the boat,” says Wade, the father of three children, while Solomon has one. “Putting our kids behind the reel of a blue marlin never gets old, and they all love it.”

Wade hails from Atlanta, Georgia; Solomon, from Mobile, Alabama. Both men now live in Orange Beach full time, docking the boat at Wade’s home on Marina Road in Orange Beach. Over the past two years, Wade and Solomon have taken the boat all the way to Cap Cana, Dominican Republic— a distance of 1600 miles, over a voyage taking six days.

Bandito’s top speed is 51 mph, with a fuel capacity of 2450 gallons of diesel and a fuel burn of 170 gallons per hour at a cruising speed of 36 mph. “We go until we find the fish,” says Wade. “We’ll usually start fishing around 100 miles out from Orange Beach and keep working our way farther out until we find areas where the fish are biting.”

Equipped with a fishing tower to give even greater visibility over the water, Bandito is designed to fish, Wade and Solomon frequently participate in local angling tournaments. “We fish most of the tournaments along the Gulf Coast,” says Wade. “Our favorite two tournaments are the Mississippi Billfish Classic out of Biloxi and the Emerald Coast Classic, which takes place in Sandestin.”

Mystical Order of Aurora hosted their sixth annual Grand Ball at the Perdido Beach Resort. This year’s theme was “Venice by the Sea.” The enchanting evening transported guests to an era of opulence and artistry, reminiscent of the Venetian streets and the glistening waters of the Adriatic. The ballroom was adorned with elegant masks, strings of enchanting lights, and the melodious tunes of Venetian serenades, as the members and their guests gathered, to celebrate the magic of this mystical order, bound by charity and unity.

BRIDE
Kathleen + Phillip Kathleen Dismukes and Phillip LeMere’s love story begins with a wedding…
APRIL 2024 61

The couple met in April of 2021 at mutual friends’ wedding—Kathleen sitting on the bride’s side, Phillip on the groom’s. “We’d actually met a few days before the wedding,” Kathleen says. “Phillip kept trying to get my attention, but I wasn’t returning it until the night of the wedding. Phillip asked me to dance, and I said yes. By the end of the night, we had our first date planned. The next Thursday, we met at El Papi in Mobile.”

Just under a year and a half later, on September 28, 2022, Philip asked her for much more than a dance. “He’d coordinated with my parents and family to make it seem everyone was going to a dinner in Fairhope for my brother’s birthday—and that he wouldn’t be able to make it because of work,” Kathleen recalls. “Once the photographer was there and my family and I were getting ready to go to dinner, he walked over to my parents’ house from where he’d been waiting next door and called me to tell me to come outside. Once I came out, he took me down to the beach and proposed.”

After more than a year of planning, Kathleen walked down the aisle at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach wearing a strapless Mikado Silk gown with a mermaid silhouette and a fingertip length veil with horsehair trim, topped off with a tulle cape for the ceremony. Surrounded by their loved ones, the couple stood at the altar with their 11 bridesmaids and 12 groomsmen to exchange their vows. After being pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their guests for an onsite reception, where they dined on a delicious array of food, including an incredible oyster bar, and hit the dance floor.

And oh, how they danced…

“I surprised my dad with ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ by ZZ Top for our father-daughter dance,” Kathleen says. “He’s always wanted to dance to that. We started off with a more ‘appropriate’ song, ‘Father and Daughter’ by Paul Simon, then it changed to ZZ Top. It made him smile so big, and I will never forget that!”

Also unforgettable were the cakes—including a four-tiered wedding cake with alternated layers of chocolate with mocha buttercream and hazelnut praline spread, vanilla bean with strawberry jam and strawberry Swiss buttercream, and blueberry lemon with lemon buttercream and lemon curd, adorned with palette knife florals with beading and edible pearl dusting.

The inspiration for the groom’s cake was a Bob Dylan album cover, a caramel flavored sponge with salted caramel buttercream and caramel drizzle, decorated with Bob Dylan’s profile in black, featuring his hair in different colors on a white background. “I think it was the coolest cake I’ve ever seen,” says Kathleen.

Keeping spirits high throughout the night, the bar featured custom Italian wines made for the bride by a family friend, including Nebbiolo and Val Rosa. After festivities came to an end, the couple left to honeymoon at Sandals Royal Barbados. Now home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Kathleen and Phillip are looking forward to many more weddings together, happily reminding them of their own, and the one wedding that began it all.
