How Med Center Health can help with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 15 million adults in the United States have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a chronic lung disease that causes air flow limitation (less air in and out of the airways) and breathing-related symptoms. Symptoms can include:

• Shortness of breath

• Coughing that produces mucus or phlegm

• Chest tightness

• Wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing

• Frequent respiratory infections

“A lot of my patients say they’re struggling to breathe, and they think that’s just because they’re getting old,” said Dr. Brandon Nance, Pulmonary/ Critical Care specialist at Med Center Health.

“While age can play a factor, you could also have undiagnosed COPD, especially if you are a smoker. If there are activities you’ve had to give up, like playing with your grandchildren, or just being able to go outside and walk more than 100 feet, then COPD is a very real possibility. If you’re having breathing issues, such as shortness of breath, it’s very reasonable to come see a pulmonologist, and we can get a treatment plan figured out for you.”

The most common cause of COPD is cigarette smoking. Smoking damages the airways and lungs, leading to inflammation, narrowing of the airways, and destruction of the air sacs. Due to Kentucky’s high rates of smoking, the Bluegrass State has one of the highest rates of COPD in the nation. The damage done to lungs cannot be cured, but there are ways to manage and treat COPD.

You can’t reverse all the effects of COPD, but you can preserve your quality of life, and, really, that’s the most important thing,” said Nance. “If you get a diagnosis, we can really help bring back your quality of life. If you continue to live with these symptoms and continue smoking, it is only going to make your symptoms worse. You’re going to be in and out of the hospital, and you will eventually wind up on oxygen and not being able to live your life to the fullest. While you can’t completely fix COPD, you can obtain a much better quality of life.

Med Center Health has many treatment options available to help improve your ability to breathe and limit the impact of COPD:

• Minimally-invasive Zephyr Valve Procedure

• Pulmonary Rehab

• Oxygen Therapies

• Inhalers & Injection Medicines

The best way to improve your symptoms of COPD is to stop smoking. Med Center Health offers the BREATHE Smoking Cessation Program. BREATHE is a one-on-one program for smoking cessation that is accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs.

“Most people are not able to quit cold turkey,” said Marie Vincent, Wellness Coordinator at Med Center Health. “Most people do need help by this kind of program and a nicotine replacement therapy. If you join this program, and participate in nicotine replacement therapy, your chances for successfully quitting actually increase 50 percent.”

The Community Foundation of South Central Kentucky hosted its Annual Women’s Fund Dinner on Tuesday, October 21st. The event, held at the Knicely Conference Center, was an opportunity for the more than 300 local women who comprise the Women’s Fund to hear directly from beneficiaries and to award $188,000 in total impact grants. The Women’s Fund is an organization whose members pool their resources to support initiatives dedicated to improving the quality of life for women, children and families in South Central Kentucky.

Each year, their board conducts a rigorous review of applications and site visits to determine four finalists. Those finalists—The Family Enrichment Center, Barren River Area Safe Space (BRASS), Habitat for Humanity and Junior Achievement—attended the annual dinner for live presentations. Each organization detailed how its proposed projects would specifically help women, children and families in our community.

Members then cast their votes while receiving an update on the progress made by the 2024 first-place grant winner, House on the Hill. The top grant for 2025 of $100,000 was awarded to the Family Enrichment Center for their Renovation for Program Expansion. BRASS secured the second-place grant, $68,000, for their Domestic Violence Mobile Advocacy Response Unit. The remaining finalists each received a substantial $10,000 grant to support their critical programs. KATE PAUL

For Bowling Green based photographer Kate Paul, capturing life’s most meaningful moments isn’t just a career—it’s a calling rooted in gratitude, connection and purpose. Originally from Princeton, Kentucky, Paul’s path to photography wasn’t one she initially planned but one that unfolded naturally as her passion for storytelling grew behind the lens.

A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Paul earned her degree in Public Relations with a minor in Hospitality. Her early vision was to plan weddings in hotels but life had something a little different in store. “While my original goal was to plan weddings, life led me to a new passion—I now have the honor of photographing them,” she says. What began as a simple hobby during her college years, sparked by a friend’s gift of a camera, soon evolved into Kate Phelps Photography, a thriving business that allows her to capture love, joy and connection in every frame.

Paul’s journey beautifully intertwines the personal and the professional. In 2020, at a wedding of all places, she met her now husband Duncan Paul. “He was sitting across the room when I leaned over to a friend and asked, ‘Who is that?’” she recalls. The two hit it off instantly and two and a half years later exchanged vows in beautiful Palm Beach. Today, their world revolves around their 10-month-old son Pierce, whose giggles and milestones are often the star of Paul’s camera roll. Between playtime, family walks and evenings spent in the kitchen cooking, she finds joy in the simple everyday moments that fill their home with love.

Professionally, Paul has made an indelible mark on Bowling Green’s creative community. Beyond her photography business, she proudly opened the first photography studio in Bowling Green designed specifically for other photographers to rent and create in. “It’s been so special to build a space that fosters creativity and community,” she says. Her vision for the studio reflects her belief that there’s room for everyone in the creative industry

“For my family, I want to keep enjoying every moment, supporting one another and creating memories together.”

and that collaboration and support are far more powerful than competition.

Paul’s giving spirit extends beyond her peers and clients. One of her most meaningful endeavors has been offering complimentary newborn portraits to new parents from the Center for Pregnancy, a gesture that captures her heart for service. “It’s truly an honor to document the blessing of new life and give families tangible memories of such a meaningful season,” she shares.

For Paul, the true reward of her work lies in the trust she builds with her clients. Many return to her again and again, inviting her to document engagements, weddings, newborn sessions and family milestones year after year. “Life is fragile and photographs often become treasures we didn’t know we’d need,” she reflects. “Knowing that I’m capturing moments my clients can hold onto forever is what makes this work so deeply rewarding.”

Outside of her business, Paul’s passions remain rooted in family, faith and personal growth. Whether it’s learning new skills, volunteering or spending time outdoors, she’s always seeking ways to grow and give back. Her values and work ethic were shaped early on by one of her greatest influences— her grandfather Rod Whittington, a pharmacist and owner of Princeton

Pharmacy. “He treated people with a Christ-like love and set an incredible example for me both in how I live my life and how I serve others,” she says. Looking ahead, Paul hopes to continue building on the foundation she’s created—pursuing new challenges, deepening relationships and using her work to make a lasting impact. “I hope the future holds continued growth and opportunities to make a difference,” she says. “For my family, I want to keep enjoying every moment, supporting one another and creating memories together.”

At the end of every visit with her family, they share a simple yet meaningful phrase—“LUCU,” short for “love ya, c ya.” It’s a reminder of the warmth and connection that define Paul’s life and work—where every photo tells a story and every story begins with love.

On the last Saturday in September, Circus Square Park in downtown Bowling Green transformed into a parade of nations. VIP Teacher Spotlight

Logan Steenbergen is in her 11th year of teaching, with her first five years at Barren County Elementary and the last six years at Potter Gray Elementary. Steenbergen said “Being a teacher wasn’t in my plan, but I believe it is a big part of my purpose. I am not sure how I even ended up an education major, but here I am.”

Steenbergen has a Masters in professional school counseling and is currently working on completing my Rank 1 through a BGISD and GRREC collaboration. She is also the BGHS Girls Golf Coach. This year the team won region for the first time in 20 years, and also won Semi-State for the first time in program history.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE FAVORITE PART OF BEING A TEACHER?

“I love the connections I get to build with students and their families. You get to be a very special part of each students lives for the year that they are in your class. If you’re lucky, it is so neat to keep in touch with students as they move through grades into Jr. High and High School. My very first class from Barren County are now Juniors in college. It is really cool to see their lives play out in ways you never could have imagined. It is extremely rewarding to have students come back years later, even into adulthood and tell you the impact that you have had on their lives from that special year you spent together. I really work hard to build that classroom community where our classroom feels like a family and a safe space for them.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN EDUCATION?

“All 4 of my grandparents were teachers, so I feel like it was inevitable that at least one of their grandchildren followed in their footsteps. I did not see it being me, but immediately fell in love with it.”

For Chad and Caitlyn Krebs, the decision to build their home on Mt. Victor Lane was as much about family as it was about lifestyle. Chad grew up in Bowling Green, so when life took the couple to Indianapolis and later Nashville, the pull to return home never faded. With two young children and family close by, the Krebs knew it was the right time to settle back in Bowling Green and create a home that would grow with them.

“The main criteria was being near Indian Hills Country Club,” Chad shared. “I grew up here, and it’s such a great community. We also loved this particular lot because it gave us room for a longer driveway and a bit more space for the kids to play.”

Once they found the perfect location, the next step was choosing the right builder. For Chad, the decision was easy. “I’ve known Colby Henon for years through Indian Hills,” he said. “We’d seen a house he built in another neighborhood that we really liked and thought, what if we could take that house and just put it here?” That idea sparked a collaborative design process that would transform an existing plan into something entirely their own.

According to Henon, the home’s inspiration came from a plan his team had built several times before, but the Krebs family brought their own creativity to make it unique. “They were familiar with our previous projects and toured several of our homes, which gave them a strong foundation for designing something that truly reflected their style,” he said.

The home took shape over six months of careful planning and design. Measuring 3,164 square feet, it includes four bedrooms, three full baths, a playroom/bonus room, and a man cave that perfectly suits Chad’s hobbies. One of the standout features is the golf simulator, a natural choice for an avid golfer living just steps away from a beautiful course.

While Chad focused on functionality, Caitlyn took the lead on design. “My wife did most of the design work,” Chad said. “She really thought about the small details that make the home work for our family.” From the unique foyer flooring to the intentional color palette that flows seamlessly from the floors to the cabinetry, every choice reflects thoughtful cohesion and craftsmanship.

Henon’s favorite feature is the home’s front entryway. “Caitlyn and Chad really elevated the space with floor tile and elegant picture molding on the two-story foyer walls,” he said. “It makes a strong first impression and sets the tone for the rest of the home’s design.”

One of Caitlyn’s favorite spaces is the hidden pantry, which combines practicality with polished design. “It’s nice with kids,” she said. “I tried to

design the kitchen and pantry so the kids have their own lower-level access and can easily help themselves.”

Caitlyn’s decorating inspiration stemmed from focusing on what felt right for their family rather than following trends. The result is a home that’s warm and modern, filled with durable materials and personal touches that make it both stylish and functional. Every room feels intentional, from the cozy play areas

designed for the kids to the inviting living spaces perfect for gathering with family and friends.

The build itself came together smoothly, a credit to both the homeowners and Henon’s team. “Our team and the homeowners stayed on schedule, and communication was excellent throughout the process,” Henon said. “Like most projects, the biggest challenges typically come from weather delays or scheduling coordination, but everything came together seamlessly on this one.”

There were a few surprises along the way, including a front door that arrived in a slightly different color than planned. But instead of being an issue, it turned out to be a happy accident. “It worked out well, and we actually liked it better,” Caitlyn said with a laugh. A retaining wall that wasn’t originally part of the plan also had to be added, but it enhanced the property’s layout and curb appeal in the end.

Today, the Krebs family enjoys a home that perfectly embodies comfort, function, and connection. It’s a home built with intention—a reflection of where they’ve been and where they’re headed. From afternoons spent practicing golf swings to quiet evenings gathered around the kitchen, every space tells a story of family, creativity, and collaboration.

For both the Krebs family and Henon, the finished home is more than a construction project—it’s the realization of a shared vision. Rooted in community, elevated by design, and filled with the spirit of family, 2232 Mt. Victor Lane stands as a true testament to what can happen when craftsmanship meets heart. Henon and his team are proud members of the Builders Association of South Central Kentucky, a reflection of their ongoing commitment to quality and professionalism in the local homebuilding industry.

Working with Broadway Builders’ in-house designer, Young collaborated closely with his parents to bring their vision to life, blending elements from previous company plans with new ideas designed specifically for their needs.

“The overall design we were going for was a European feel—light, airy and welcoming,” Young explains. The result is a home that feels timeless and inviting while maintaining a sense of sophistication. Spanning roughly 2,650 square feet, the home features three bedrooms and two and a half baths, with a layout that balances beauty and functionality.

Functionality was especially important to the

homeowners. They wanted a home that was not only beautiful but practical—an original design that would serve as their forever home. Key features like a deluxe pantry and an inviting outdoor living space make the home ideal for everyday comfort and entertaining alike.

While the process went smoothly from start to finish, one feature stands out most to Young—the home’s exterior. “I love the curb appeal,” he says. “The curved driveway that leads to the front door gives it a balanced look that feels really welcoming.”

The location itself couldn’t be more perfect. Nestled just close enough to town for convenience yet offering that peaceful, hometown feel, the setting provides the best of both worlds. As the holiday season approaches, the family is especially excited to see the home filled with warmth, laughter and loved ones—a fitting start to many seasons of memories ahead.

From the thoughtful design to its charming approach, the Mt. Victor Lane residence perfectly reflects Broadway Builders’ craftsmanship and care. It’s a home built not just with skill and precision, but with heart—a true testament to family, function and the art of fine homebuilding.
