Med Center Health is here to help you STOP vaping.

How Med Center Health is Helping Our Community Break Free from Vaping.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, electronic cigarette usage, also known as vaping, is increasing. The number of vape users increased from an estimated 11.5 million in 2019 to more than 15 million in 2023. The CDC also estimates 1.6 million middle and high school students as users of electronic cigarettes.

Research has identified more than 2,000 chemicals being used in vape products that can irritate the lungs, increase blood pressure, and increase the risk of cancer.

“Vaping is not safe,” said Dr. Irfan Waheed, pulmonologist at Med Center Health Western Kentucky Heart & Lung. “These vaping products contain propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. On their own, these products are generally considered safe for consumption, but when they burn in vape products, they release a chemical called formaldehyde, which is a known cause of cancer. The vape products also use nickel, tungsten, and lead. When the vape product heats up, it releases toxic materials.”

Electronic cigarettes usually contain fewer harmful chemicals than the deadly mix of 7,000 chemicals in smoke from cigarettes. However, this does not make e-cigarettes safe. Since e-cigarettes are a relatively new invention, scientists are still learning about the immediate and long-term health effects of using them.

Vaping has been shown to cause damage to the lungs and other organs, breathing issues, and it is known to contain cancer-causing ingredients. Vaping can also be extremely harmful to young people.

Nicotine poses unique dangers to children and young adults because their brains are still developing. Nicotine can harm brain development, which continues until about age 25. Using a vape product during adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. Nicotine is also an addictive chemical, especially to younger people.

“For some people it’s a habit,” said Dr. Waheed. “For some it’s an anxiety reliever. When a patient comes to see me, and they are trying to quit vaping or smoking, I first try to understand what the patient’s reasons are for addiction and what the brain is linking the vaping to. If I can understand what their perspective is, then I will be able to better direct them to help.”

Med Center Health strongly encourages people who are currently smoking or vaping to quit in order to improve their quality of life. That is why Med Center Health offers a variety of ways to help people quit smoking and vaping.

“Med Center Health has medical nicotine replacement patches and gum. We also have a nicotine inhaler and nose spray available. There is

a medicine called Chantix available that helps to decrease the nicotine craving. We have all of these medical options to help you quit, and we also have counseling options.”

Med Center Health offers vaping cessation programs and encourages e-cigarette users to speak to a pulmonologist about quitting. Med Center Health offers a BREATHE Smoking Cessation Program that is available to anyone trying to quit smoking, vaping, or the use of any tobacco products.

The BREATHE Smoking Cessation Program (in conjunction with a nicotine replacement therapy) has shown to increase a person’s chances of successfully quitting by 50 percent.

ELIZABETH RHODES

While local artist Elizabeth Rhodes was growing up, she always remembered her mother encouraging her in art and her creativity. Coming from a family of creative people, Rhodes says her family believed no mess was too big, as long as she was being creative with it. That creative spirit never left Rhodes, and now she has made a profession out of her creativity, both selling her artwork and teaching others how to find their creative spark in their own lives. Along the way, she found a few creative surprises of her own.

Originally from Greensburg, Kentucky, Rhodes moved to Bowling Green and graduated from Bowling Green High School. She studied studio art at WKU and met her husband, Shawn, while at school. She went on to be a working artist while the couple raised their two sons, painting canvases and murals, all while Shawn helped build boards for the artwork, did the bookkeeping for her business and worked full-time in healthcare.

Rhodes now specializes in watercolor and glass and resin artwork. She originally found glass and resin 10 years ago and became enamored with the medium.

“Once I found glass and resin artwork, I became obsessed with it,” Rhodes says. “As an art major, I’ve done all kinds of art, but I fell in love with the sparkly, crunchy glass texture and the dimension I can achieve with it. You can take something that is meant for one purpose, and then break it up, repurpose it, and create something completely new from something that was going to be discarded.”

Inevitably, with beautiful, vibrant artwork, Rhodes’ following grew, and so did her business. Along with her artwork, she offered local classes on how to make art for five years. Then, in 2019, she had a thought that she wanted to make her business more sustainable.

“I was traveling and doing classes, and I decided I would start offering my classes online,” Rhodes says. “The timing couldn’t have been more perfect with 2020 around the corner. It allowed people to have what I call a ‘Netflix for artists,’ where they can join me live to see me create a piece of art or they can watch it at their convenience, or multiple times, and they can utilize it however they want. They can make their own, they can sell it or they can teach their own classes.”

Rhodes says she has a thriving membership group of 200 individuals from all over the world, and she offers subscriptions for both watercolor and glass and resin art. She does in-person retreats for members at different locations around the country and is currently in the planning stages for her next retreat.

“I feel like a lot of my members have taken the opportunity to really come into their own with their creativity,” Rhodes says. “This has given my members something to do

that’s new and creative, and they can even sell their creations. Many of them have put themselves on the back burner, and now they are taking time for themselves. They say that this is the best thing they’ve ever done for themselves.”

Another way that Rhodes expresses her creativity is through gingerbread house decorating. It had always been a hobby that first started with her mother when she was young. As an adult, she would decorate a house once a year. That is, until Food Network came calling in 2022.

“I posted my gingerbread houses online, and The Food Network saw an old post I had made,” Rhodes says. “It just goes to show, if you have a small business, you need to post. I think people are afraid to put themselves out there, but you never know what can happen.”

Rhodes went on to be selected for the Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown, where she, assisted by local cookie artist Jenn Mackin, competed on the show and won the grand prize after creating a small-town Kentucky Christmas parade scene out of gingerbread.

“It was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done,” Rhodes says. “When we got there, we found out that other teams were pastry chefs or made gingerbread professionally. Knowing that, we thought there was no chance for us to win, so we decided to just have fun. I think that might have been what made ours stand out. It truly validated my creativity and my ability to think on my feet.”

As Rhodes looks toward the future, she is excited for both her professional life and her family life. The Rhodes’ two sons, Peyton and Parker, are in school and studying for their future professions, and she loves being able to travel and see them with Shawn. She is also excited to continue to grow her membership, which is currently open and accepting new members.

“I love inspiring people,” Rhodes says. “The people in my group are so excited to make art. They are excited to show friends and neighbors what they’ve created. I’m not a teacher by trade, but it is amazing to see how excited they are when they learn something and accomplish something new.”

Tara Tinsley

5th Grade Social Studies • Jennings Creek Elementary

“Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” - Rita Pierson “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” - Rita Pierson

Tara Tinsley began her teaching career in 2010 after graduating from Western Kentucky University. Over the years, she has taught all subjects across grades 2 through 6. In 2015, she completed her master’s degree in Teacher Leadership and is currently pursuing her Rank I certification. For Tara, the most rewarding part of teaching isn’t found in test scores, it’s in the relationships she builds with her students. She finds deep fulfillment in watching former students grow and go on to achieve great things. Tara is looking forward to starting her new position at Oakland Elementary as an Intructional Coach in the Fall. One of her favorite professional reads is The Wild Card by Hope and Wade King. A quote from the book that inspires her approach to teaching is: “You have to decide how you will breathe life into your curriculum, regardless of what it is.” Tara has been married to her husband, Daniel, for nearly 14 years. Together, they have three children: Cruz, Lily and Nora Kate.

What do you love most about teaching?

School

The smiles when kids are engaged and excited to come to class. I love to turn a basic lesson into an experience for kids. Some students come into school with the idea that they will sit, listen, and take notes. I try to change that narrative for them by incorporating real- life simulation into lessons or taking something otherwise “boring” and adding a little twist to make it engaging for the kids. There is so much joy when their little faces light up with excitement!

Why did you choose a career in education?

From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to teach. I was blessed to have some amazing teachers as I was growing up. School was a safe place to go and be loved, and I knew when I grew up I wanted to be that for children.

What do you and your family love to do together?

We have three very active children, and we love to cheer them on through their activities. We spend most of our days at a ballfield or gym, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything else!

From Family Home to Forever Home

STORY BY ALLISON RAZIC PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARRIS VISUAL MEDIA

After 47 years in the home where they raised their children, the homeowners felt the time was right to begin a new chapter. They had long been members at Olde Stone, so when the opportunity came to build within the community, it felt like a natural step. “We were already members, so it just made sense to move to this community,” they shared. “And we just kept coming back to this lot with the trees all along the back. It had a sense of privacy and calm that felt right.”

In March 2024, they moved into their newly completed home—only to face an unexpected challenge just two months later. A severe storm swept through the area, toppling a tree and destroying their covered back porch. “We weren’t even finished unpacking and were already undergoing construction again,” they said. “But we consider ourselves lucky. We weren’t home, and the damage could have been so much worse.”

The design journey wasn’t without its hurdles either. After struggling for months to settle on a layout that felt just right, they nearly gave up. That changed when their builder, Doug Martens, invited them to walk through another home for inspiration. “We instantly fell in love with the space,” they recalled. “It turned out to be the home of local architect Kelly Schlenker. We hired her on the spot. She was amazing and made the home exactly what we needed.”

The couple wanted a home that felt open, but with clearly defined spaces that provided structure and flow. The result is a refined balance between elegance and comfort. The kitchen, with its striking gold-lined pendant lights and oversized marble island, flows effortlessly into the living area—a space filled with curated textures, soothing hues of blue and white and personalized touches like shelves lined with collected blue-andwhite ceramics.

One of their top priorities was having space to host their growing family. “We have four children and eight grandchildren, so we built the upstairs with them in mind,” they explained. The second floor includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, and even a dedicated laundry area—creating a retreat-like space for

extended visits. “They can have their own space while still feeling at home with us.”

Another favorite feature of the home is the dual “his and hers” bathrooms and closets off the owner’s suite—a luxurious detail that brings comfort and functionality into their daily routines. “We really enjoy having our own spaces to get ready each day,” they said. “It makes things easier and adds a little bit of peace to our mornings.”

Throughout the home, intentionality is everywhere. From timeless color choices to art pieces that carry personal history, each space reflects their journey. “We used a lot of pieces we’ve collected over the years,” they shared.

“One of our favorite details is the wall of etchings from my aunt’s travels in Italy. They bring history and warmth into the home.”

With years of banking experience, Julie Keith knows that for a business or community to succeed, they need a bank that understands their needs, supports their goals and is a partner for economic development.

“Banterra Bank became interested in Bowling Green market in 2022 after discovering the positive growth and how well it would fit with our core footprint and lending focus,” said Keith. “I joined their team in 2024 after discovering their lending strength, dedication to personal service and overall culture. I’m excited to offer Banterra lending services to our area.”

Keith is a graduate of the KBA General Banking School, KBA Commercial Banking School, and the LSU Graduate School of Banking, and also holds an associate degree in Paralegal Studies from Western Kentucky University. As a financial advisor at Edward Jones, she takes pride in bringing that passion to her community— and especially to her clients. “If you aren’t learning and adapting, then you are falling behind,” Roper says.

She is deeply involved in her community, serving on the Leadership Committee for the Alzheimer’s Association, co-founding Ladies Who Lead, and acting as an Ambassador for the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce.

Over her six years with Edward Jones, Roper has earned numerous awards, but the one she values most is the Spirit of Caring Award, which is voted on by her peers. In addition to her accolades, she was entrusted with taking over and leading Edward Jones’ historic downtown Bowling Green branch.

Bowling Green, their commitment to building strong relationships with local businesses and residents is already underway.

Banterra is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a motto of “Helping You Thrive Since 1975.” The bank began with a focus on agricultural in Southern Illinois and has grown to six states, including cities such as Scottsdale (AZ), St. Louis (MO) and Salt Lake City (UT). With more than $3 billion in assets, Banterra provides smart financing solutions ranging from small business to large commercial operations and real estate development.

Their shared mission is simple: meet the diverse needs of their members while remaining handson in helping the local community prosper. “Our work is rooted in being there for people, both financially and personally,” says Simoneau. Simoneau began her banking career in 2017 as a teller and has since worked her way up through several roles, including Head Teller and Assistant Branch Manager. She now leads the Campbell Lane branch of Service One as Branch Manager. Passionate about giving back, she volunteers through various bank-sponsored initiatives but believes in the power of quiet, consistent contributions. “I love sharing financial knowledge with young adults just starting out or finding thoughtful ways to help seniors in our community maintain both financial and physical independence,” she says.

Howland’s journey in banking began over twenty years ago. After stepping away to focus on school and starting a family, he returned to the industry in 2017. He’s an active member of the Bowling Green Noon Lion’s Club, where

he supports projects such as a local vision screening program and Lion’s Quest, a youthfocused initiative that helps keep kids out of the juvenile justice system.

At the heart of their operations is a guiding principle: “People Helping People.” Simoneau and Howland both believe in meeting members where they are, and helping them move forward. “What I love most is the flexibility I have to really listen to our members and come up with creative solutions to help them succeed,” says Howland.

Unlike traditional banks, Service One Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned institution. That means when you become a member, you also become an owner. Profits are returned to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher dividends and enhanced services.

Service One offers all the essentials— checking and savings accounts, CDs and more— but Howland is especially proud of the Fast Cash Loan, a product designed to help break the payday loan cycle and guide members toward long-term financial freedom. “It’s practical, impactful and truly changes lives,” he says.

One of the more lighthearted services they provide is a free coin-counting machines,

available at both the Bypass and Scottsville branches. “It relieves members of the hassle of rolling coins themselves, while letting them put their spare change to good use,” Simoneau notes.

Service One’s mission extends beyond financial services. The team is encouraged to volunteer and engage with local causes, and that culture of service is central to what sets them apart. “We’re not just here for transactions, we’re here to make a difference,” says Howland. Simoneau agrees: “It’s our deep ties to the Bowling Green community, and our commitment to our members’ full financial well-being, that make us truly unique.”

CALEB COSTELLOW

Southern Kentucky Financial Services

President, Investment Adviser Representative

Growing up in a household where financial conversations were always encouraged, Caleb Costellow developed a deep appreciation for the importance of money management at an early age. His father, Allen Costellow, spent his life in financial services, and his dedication to serving the South Central Kentucky region inspired Caleb to follow in his footsteps. Today, Caleb serves as President and Investment Adviser Representative of Southern Kentucky Financial Services.

A Bowling Green native and Bowling Green High School alumnus, Caleb is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management at Western Kentucky University, as well as a Chartered Financial Consultant® designation with The American College of Financial Services. Outside of the office, he and his wife, Jennifer, stay active in their church, Crossland Community Church, where they attend with their six children—Jolie, Timothy, Elizabeth, Logan, Peyton and Andrew. Caleb is also passionate about giving back and supports organizations such as The Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

Over the past eighteen years, Caleb has helped hundreds of families in Bowling Green and the surrounding areas build strong financial strategies as a licensed financial professional. He assists clients with retirement planning, healthcare planning, and legacy

planning. “I’m proud to guide clients through turbulent markets and major life changes, while maintaining a focus on long-term growth and stability,” says Caleb.

SOKY Financial’s mission is to provide the best client experience in the industry and the communities they serve. The team places a strong emphasis on understanding each client’s individual needs, goals, and dreams when developing financial plans. They believe that a written financial strategy—not just a product—is essential to achieving long-term financial success.

The Summit Process™, Southern Kentucky Financial Services’ proprietary planning method, was designed to help retirees and their families address five critical areas: Financial Planning, Investment Planning, Tax Planning, Healthcare Planning and Legacy Planning. This comprehensive analysis is offered at no cost to clients and prospective clients.

The SOKY Financial team is known for digging deep into client data with the goal of creating a lasting, multigenerational impact. One of the most important traits each team member brings to the table is empathy. “A successful client-advisor relationship is deeply rooted in communication, trust, and having a true passion for assisting people in making life-changing decisions,” says Caleb.

A recent addition to the team is Caleb’s daughter, Jolie

Costellow. She has worked as a part time intern for the past year while attending BGHS and plans to continue as she begins her college career at WKU this fall where she plans to major in finance, complete the CFP program and become a third generation advisor with SOKY Financial. “As a future advisor I have been excited to see what a difference having a written plan brings to the lives of those we serve”. – Jolie Costellow

The team’s involvement goes beyond financial guidance. They actively participate in community events, including Habitat for Humanity, the Toys for Tots drive and the Annual Jaycee’s Christmas Parade.

Following in his father’s footsteps has shown Caleb firsthand the power of thoughtful financial planning. His advice for young adults under 30? Don’t wait to start. “Younger generations will likely bear more responsibility for their retirement planning,” says Caleb. “There’s no substitute for starting early, living below your means and investing for the long term.”

Live music, food trucks, crafts and a vintage baseball game…what more could you ask for? This is exactly what The Potter Farm put together for “The Old Get Together,” an inaugural celebration of folk culture that included barn dances and jamborees. The family friendly event sure felt like a celebration with event attendees setting up their lawn chairs to relax and watch the vintage baseball game featuring the Bluegrass Barons vs. Hog & Hominy, while others listened to one of the multiple folk and bluegrass bands that performed throughout the day. Local artisans also set up booths while other talented individuals from the community brought their own instruments along for an old-fashioned jamboree. To round out the day, families could grab some food from one of the many food trucks and then play a game of cornhole or sit down for a classic game of Connect 4 at the picnic tables.
