The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 450,000 Americans may be affected by alpha-gal. Alpha-gal syndrome is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergy and tickborne disease. Alpha-gal is a molecule that is naturally produced in the bodies of most mammals but not in humans. It is also found in the saliva of some ticks, particularly the lone star tick.
When a tick bites, it can transfer alpha-gal from its saliva into a person’s blood. The body’s natural defenses, or immune system, can identify alphagal as a threat and trigger an allergic reaction, especially to red meat and other mammalian food products like beef, pork, and dairy.
In response to a bite from such a tick, a person’s immune system may produce a specific antibody to recognize alpha-gal called IgE. Long after inflammation from the tick bite subsides, IgE still floats around, ready to alert the immune system to future alpha-gal intruders, especially from alphagal from food we eat, causing an allergic reaction.
“If you have had a recent tick bite, it can be important, especially if you know that it was a lone star tick, to really pay attention to symptoms,” said Sara Glanz, Clinical Nutrition Manager at Med Center Health. “Look for the common food allergy
symptoms, which would be swelling or itching around your mouth, lips, or tongue. The alpha-gal allergy can also present with some GI symptoms, so if you’re having nausea, diarrhea, that sort of thing after eating beef, pork, or even dairy products like cow’s milk, cheese, yogurt or ice cream, then you may have alpha-gal. One unique thing about alpha-gal, compared to other food allergies, is sometimes those symptoms don’t present for several hours after you have consumed the food item, so it can be a little bit more challenging to pinpoint.”
As the lone star tick begins to become more prevalent across the U.S., cases of alpha-gal have increased. The CDC reported a 41% increase in alpha-gal diagnoses from 2017-2021, and Glanz reports seeing a similar increase in her patients.
“Here in Bowling Green, we’re seeing an increase in the number of patients who come into the hospital with alpha-gal,” said Glanz.
If you suspect you might have alpha-gal, Glanz recommends you see a physician and get an official diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, visiting a Med Center Health dietitian may help you adapt to new eating habits.
“From a nutrition standpoint, there are a lot of good nutrients that come from those foods
that contain alpha-gal -- protein, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D -- so we don’t want to eliminate those nutrients,” said Glanz. “A great first step is to make an appointment with a dietitian, and we have dietitians here on site with Med Center Health at our Health and Wellness Center who can help you tailor your diet a little bit to make sure you’re getting all the essential nutrients you need. Meeting with a dietitian can also help with burnout. We can give you some ideas as far as different foods you can try that would be safe and would give you a little bit more variety.”

STORY BY EMILY ROBERTSON
After a difficult few years, Lindsey Chaffin Scott received an unexpected honor this past spring. The Warren County native was one of two women recognized as Woman of the Year by the Bowling Green Human Rights Commission—an award that celebrates women who give back to the community in meaningful ways.
“There were 177 women nominated, and the ceremony was held in March during Women’s History Month,” Scott says. “When I got the letter that I had been selected as an honoree, I was completely stunned. Out of all those women, something about my application stood out to the board.”
Scott, who currently works for the Center for Accessible Living, has spent the last decade involved in nonprofit work. She has also volunteered her time with a number of local organizations, including Volunteers in Action, the State Independent Living Council, the American Red Cross, The Empowerment Group Making a Difference, the Barren River Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, and SOKY Patriots.
Personally, the last few years have been filled with challenges. Scott has faced significant adversity, but this award, she says, gave purpose and perspective to her journey.
“Being recognized for this award was a reminder that perseverance, compassion, and service still matter,” she says. “As a woman who has had to overcome challenges both personally and professionally, it shows that everything I went through had meaning. It’s a symbol of resilience, faith, and community. I had to fight through setbacks and heartbreak to see God’s grace and restoration. I served with my whole heart, and through that, I saw how God can open doors I never imagined.”
Outside of her work, Scott’s greatest passion is her family. She and her husband, Mark, have three children, Bryleigh, Jaxson and Presley.
“Being a wife, mom, and sister is my biggest passion,” she says. “Through my children, I’m reminded why it’s important to lead with strength and give a voice to those who haven’t found theirs yet.”
Scott credits many people who have poured into her life and helped her become who she is today. She highlights the guidance of mentors Sandi Knight, Carolyn Kates Glassand Debbie Harwood, who have supported her professionally for years. She also honors her mother as one of her biggest inspirations.
“My mother was a single parent for most of my life, and she showed me what it means to be independent and hardworking,” Scott says. “She taught me that life comes at you in waves, and you just have to get through whatever it is you’re facing.”
She also credits her husband Mark as the rock of their family.
“When I suffered a career loss and was out of work for a while, he carried our family
I want to use my platform to amplify unheard voices and advocate for equality. It’s a call to action. There’s always someone out there who needs help, and I want to be the person they can call.
This award sparked a fire in me-it reminded me that this is only the beginning
through that time,” she shares. “He was there for me, never wavered, and encouraged me every step of the way. He always believed something great was coming. I truly couldn’t ask for a better husband to share my life with.”
Looking ahead, Scott has big plans for both her family and her career. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Education with a focus on Learning and Behavior Disorders and hopes to pursue a doctorate after completing her program. She’s also excited to watch her children graduate and pursue their own goals, all while continuing to move her family forward with purpose.

Jaci Bolin has been drawn to art since childhood, so choosing to become an art teacher felt like a natural path. Today, she shares that lifelong passion with K–6 students at both Rich Pond and Lost River Elementary, where she creates a safe, welcoming space for them to explore new materials and creative processes. Coming from a long line of educators, Jaci is proud to carry on her family’s legacyfostering imagination, curiosity, and a love for art in the next generation.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A TEACHER?
“Teaching art has its messy, challenging and sometimes unsuccessful moments. But then there are those incredible times when a student suddenly understands a concept. Seeing that ‘aha’ moment on their face, or when a student remembers something, you taught them months ago, makes it all worthwhile.”
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN EDUCATION?
“Growing up, I always admired my mom’s natural ability to teach, whether at church, school or with my sisters and me. Her leadership and teaching skills inspired me, and I aspired to be like her. She instilled in me a passion for teaching, making it an easy choice when deciding on my career path. As for art, my love for it began in childhood, even if it meant getting in trouble for doodling on tests and notes during class!”
When the Pellegrini family had the opportunity to choose a new place to call home—anywhere in the United States— they didn’t opt for a big-name city or a coastal hotspot. Instead, they chose Bowling Green, Kentucky.
“Everyone thought we’d pick somewhere like Vegas or Manhattan,” Reina Pellegrini shares. “But Bowling Green is perfect for us. It’s safe, hospitable, and people are genuinely friendly. It’s a great place to raise our kids. We love it here.”
With five children and a steady stream of visiting family, the Pellegrinis needed more than just a house—they needed space to live, host and grow. When they found this property, they knew it was the one. “We fell in love immediately,” Reina says. “It had everything we were looking for: plenty of room as well as a pool, which is a feature we never had access to when we lived up North.”
“We throw parties for everything—Derby, the Olympics, Super Bowl—you name it,”
“The whole home is centered around the pool. Everything opens up, and it just feels like we’re always connected—whether we’re inside or out.”
The home—originally custom built by the previous owners—was designed during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, every detail reflects a desire to create a self-contained retreat: a resort-style pool, an outdoor entertainment area, a home theater, and a spacious game room. It’s a space designed to feel like a getaway, even when staying in.
The Pellegrinis continued that vision, making thoughtful updates and adding touches that fit their lifestyle. A standout for Michael Pellegrini is the temperaturecontrolled garage, which houses his collection of Corvettes and serves as a personal haven. “That’s his favorite part of the house,” Reina laughs. “He’s a car guy through and through.”
Furnishing such a large space—more than 9,000 square feet—was no small feat. “We were overwhelmed at first,” Reina admits. “You want it to feel cohesive, but also comfortable and livable.” With help from Ashley and Jason at BG Home Furnishings, they pulled it off. “They walked through the entire home with us and helped plan each room. They made the process so smooth.”
One of the family’s first major additions was a built-in outdoor kitchen, now a central gathering spot. “Michael wanted a place to grill and hang out with the kids,” says Reina. “We spend a lot of time outside, so adding this was a no-brainer.”
The home is also set up to host nearly any occasion. “We throw parties for everything—Derby, the Olympics, Super Bowl—you name it,” Reina says. To accommodate the influx of guests, the house is cleverly outfitted with multiple built-in Murphy beds throughout, turning almost any room into a guest suite when needed.
One of their favorite areas is the movie room, complete with a second kitchen, full bar and theater-style seating.
“It’s perfect for movie nights, but it also doubles as a great space for poker,” Reina says. “We added modern
gaming tables from BG Home Furnishings, and Michael loves using it to host poker nights with friends.”
Looking ahead, the Pellegrinis have even more plans in store. “We’re thinking about expanding the garage to fit a few more cars,” Reina notes, “and we’re exploring the idea of adding a bowling alley in the unfinished upstairs space. It’s definitely on our wish list.”
A screened-in porch off the master bedroom opens up to the pool, creating seamless indoor-outdoor living— something the family especially enjoys in warmer months. “That’s what we love most,” Reina says. “The whole home is centered around the pool. Everything opens up, and it just feels like we’re always connected— whether we’re inside or out.”
“It’s perfect for movie nights, but it also doubles as a great space for poker,”

William Williford’s passion for the legal field began early. At just 18, immediately after high school, he started his legal career as a law clerk for attorney Mike Breen – now his law partner – and Judge Kerry Morgan. This early exposure to the intricacies of the legal world laid a solid foundation for his future achievements.
After gaining valuable experience in law, Williford answered the call to serve his country. He joined the United States Army, where he served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a noncommissioned officer (Staff Sergeant / E-6) for two enlistments. As a paratrooper, he was part of multiple prestigious units that included the 82nd Airborne Division, Joint Special Operations Command and 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His service included a combat deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was awarded the Combat Action Badge. Williford’s commitment to veterans extends beyond his military service.
He is a Department of Veterans Affairs accredited attorney, a Disabled American Veterans Life Member and a Veterans of Foreign Wars Legacy Life Gold Member. As a volunteer for Hospice of Southern Kentucky in the Veteran to Veteran program, he continues to give back to those who have served. In 2024, he was appointed to the Kentucky Bar Association Military Law Committee, highlighting his ongoing dedication to veteran issues. Academically, Williford is a three-time graduate of Western Kentucky University, holding a B.A. in Political Science and both a B.A. and M.A. in English. He earned his J.D. from Nashville School of Law, where he was a member and Vice President of the Honor Council. He delivered a keynote speech at his law school graduation and was honored with The Outstanding Master of Arts Student Award at WKU. Since 2022, he has volunteered as an advisor and judge for the Logan County High School Law Club, counseling and coaching students in mock trial competitions. He also holds a Rank II Kentucky teaching license. Professionally, Williford is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and Tennessee, with admissions to multiple federal courts. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Bowling Green – Warren County Bar Association, Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and is a Kentucky Bar Foundation Life Fellow.

DEBRA L. BROZ, ATTORNEYS AT LAW, PLC
As a child growing up in Bowling Green, Heather Harryman Wade knew she wanted to be a lawyer.
“Even as a child, I was drawn to the idea of standing up for others and finding solutions in tough situations,” she says. “Over time, that early interest grew into a passion for advocacy, strategy and helping people navigate complex issues with confidence. The legal profession felt like a natural path—and it still feels like the right one every day.”
Wade graduated from WKU with a B.S. in Business Economics and finished her education at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law. She now works as an attorney with Debra L. Broz, Attorneys at Law handling personal injury and bankruptcy cases.
Wade has recently served as the Board Chair for the Warren County Code Enforcement Board for several years and volunteers for the local annual Suicide Prevention Walk, as well as recently joining the board for Kids on the Block.
When she is not hard at work or volunteering, Wade enjoys kayaking, hiking and traveling and you can always find her tailgating at WKU football games each fall. She also loves spending time with her family and friends, which is a big reason why she chose to stay in Bowling Green.
“I’ve always had an amazing support system through family and friends,” Wade says. “I wanted my son to have the opportunity to be raised with his grandparents and great-grandparents nearby.”

“One of my favorite things about these areas of law and this office in particular, is that every day brings new and different challenges and opportunities to help others,” Wade says.
She says that often there is a perception that personal injury attorneys are merely “ambulance chasers,” but she says that in her line of work, she hopes to help her clients through tough situations.
“In a car accident or slip and fall case, someone has been injured due to no fault of their own and they need help navigating the complexities of insurance coverage and available recovery,” Wade says. “I’m proud to handle these cases, and I’m happy to help people through such a stressful time.”

From as early as middle school, Debra Broz remembers loving to research and write and she enjoyed being able to argue her opinion. She graduated from WKU with a bachelor’s degree in English and went onto the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law and began practicing law in Kentucky in 1992. She says for more than 30 years she has loved what she gets to do to help people when the unthinkable happens.
“I love it when I can help put someone’s life back together and secure their future when they thought things were hopeless,” Broz says. “I wanted to help people and being a lawyer is the best use of my education and interests to help aid others.”
Broz handles personal injury and Social Security Disability cases and she says that every day is different, but there is no shortage of work in her field.
“I spend much of my time talking to people,” Broz says. “I attend many hearings each month and I love successfully helping others. I love the challenge of an injury case and figuring out how to prove fault if it is disputed or how to demonstrate a client’s injuries when those injuries are downplayed or ignored.”
Broz says she chose to practice law in Bowling Green because after moving to the area at 15 years old, she fell in love with everything that the town had to offer.

“Bowling Green has such a friendly atmosphere and I wanted to be in Bowling Green for its smalltown atmosphere,” Broz says. “It’s a place that is small in good ways, but also has opportunities, such as WKU.”
Broz gives back to the community she loves so much in many ways. She is the chairman of the Purses, Pouts and Pearls committee for this year’s and last year’s events. She is also the past president of the Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center board and the Bowling Green Chapter of the American Red Cross board.

Growing up in Logan County, Lucas H.C. Wetton always had an interest in the law—but his journey to the courtroom wasn’t linear. Before becoming an attorney, Wetton worked in his family’s business, fabricating and installing dust collection systems across China, Mexico, and the United States.
“I lived in China for two and a half years, where I met my wonderful wife,” Wetton says. “Despite having an undergraduate degree in philosophy, I taught myself AutoCAD. I learned a great deal and enjoyed what I did, but law was always my passion.”
When he returned to the U.S., Wetton pursued his J.D. in Nashville. Though he initially planned to remain there after graduation, an unexpected opportunity brought him to Bowling Green— and it changed everything.
“I had the chance to work as a Staff Attorney for Warren County Circuit Judges John Grise and Steve Wilson,” he says. “It was the best decision I ever made. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Bowling Green has one of the most professional and collegial bars in the state. It’s without a doubt one of the best places to practice law in the Commonwealth.”
Today, Wetton maintains a broad and dynamic legal practice that includes business and corporate law, civil litigation, property disputes, and employment matters.
“My practice is multi-faceted,” he explains.
- BUSINESS CONSULTING
- BUSINESS FORMATION
- BUSINESS REORGANIZATION - BUSINESS TRADEMARK
“While I try to plan my days, I also make it a priority to be accessible to anyone who reaches out—whether it’s a case I can take or not. If it’s outside my area of expertise, I do my best to guide them to someone who can help.”
In addition to his general practice, Wetton also collaborates with attorney Laura Hagan in their firm’s growing intellectual property division, where they assist clients with trademark, copyright and patent issues. Together, they manage everything from initial filings and renewals to litigating infringement and violation claims.
Outside of his legal work, Wetton is committed to serving the broader community. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the South Union Shaker Village, serves on the Kentucky Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and is a board member for the Delta Kappa Epsilon International Judicial Committee.
practice is defined by precision, clarity and forwardthinking counsel.
Her work has extended beyond individual clients to impact policy as well. She played an instrumental role in advising Western Kentucky University on the development of its intellectual property policy for faculty and staff, helping shape how innovation is supported in academic settings. She also provides legal opinions on patent, trademark and copyright infringement and validity – critical to companies seeking to mitigate risk and protect competitive advantage.
Beyond the courtroom and filing desk, Hagan has maintained a longstanding commitment to service. She currently serves as the Chair of Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland. In the past she has served as the Chair for the Western Kentucky University Research Foundation and in an executive role for The Community Foundation of South Central Kentucky.

Growing up, Devyn Edwards never thought about being a lawyer because she had her sights set on being a doctor. Her dreams changed though once she graduated from University of Kentucky in 2016 and took a temporary job working in a family law and criminal defense firm in Paducah.
“At the core of my decision to go to law school was the desire to help people, because I truly believe everyone deserves a second chance,” Devyn says. “I also love learning and becoming a lawyer felt like the perfect combination of the two. The attorneys I worked with after undergrad showed me an option I hadn’t considered and encouraged me to get my degree and practice law.”
Abigail Barnes was one of the attorneys in Paducah that encouraged
Devyn to learn as much as she could and pursue a law degree.
“Abbie showed me what being an attorney can mean to someone who is just barely hanging on and needs a hand to reach through the fog,” she says. Devyn went to law school at the University of Akron in Ohio and graduated in 2021 and then was admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association in 2023. She now handles Bankruptcy and Social Security Disability cases at Debra L. Broz, Attorneys at Law.
“A typical day is spent meeting with clients to discuss their options, updating their cases and keeping them up-todate with the status of their cases. Our office environment is very collaborative and encourages learning.”

These local businesses exist to help you define what care looks like for you and give you the tools to prioritize it.
So whether you’re looking to refresh, recover, or rebuild, we hope this section connects you to the professionals who can help you feel more like yourself—at your best.

The whole staff is AMAZING! Dr. Graves explains everything well and is never pushy. He doesn’t “get on to you” like some doctors do. All the staff will say hi and talk to you. The staff is also amazing with children. My 4-year -old LOVEs going to the dentist! I really appreciate when I had to bring my two daughters with me when I had to have some work done and the whole staff interacted with them. On the way home from our last cleaning, my daughter said “I think when I grow up, I want to be a dentist person”. - Kadi

I have known Dr. Graves for many years. He was one of the most compassionate dentist I have ever seen. His staff always puts me at ease. As I have gotten older I have more anxiety about dental work and Mark and his entire staff are very responsive to my needs. I highly recommend Dr. Graves and his staff. - Kristy
