Colonoscopies Save Lives: What Adults 45+ Need to Know

Each year, more than 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than one-third of those individuals will die from the disease. The good news is that colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer when it is detected early. That’s why staying on schedule with recommended colonoscopy screenings is essential.

The American Cancer Society recommends adults at average risk for colorectal cancer begin getting their colonoscopies at age 45. Individuals at higher risk should begin screening even earlier. Those higher risk factors include having a firstdegree relative (parent, sibling, or child) with a history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other colon-related diseases.

“It is crucial to get screened on time,” said Kayla Smith, Family Nurse Practitioner at Med Center Health Hematology & Oncology. “When polyps are found early, treatment can be straightforward. We can remove the polyp or, in some cases, a portion of the colon. However, if patients wait until symptoms appear, the disease may have already progressed to cancer. Our goal is to prevent that, which is why screenings are so important.”

Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented through screening. During a colonoscopy, a general surgeon or gastroenterologist can identify and remove polyps—often before they become cancerous. Waiting until symptoms develop can significantly reduce treatment options and may result in poorer outcomes.

“Common warning signs of colorectal cancer include blood in the stool, unexplained changes in weight, and changes in bowel patterns,” said Kayla Smith. “There is a common misconception that if you don’t have symptoms, screening isn’t necessary. In reality, screening is essential precisely because it makes it possible for us to detect cancer early and monitor or remove polyps that require intervention.”

A colonoscopy is the gold standard and the most effective way to detect colon cancer. The procedure allows physicians to examine the entire colon and remove or biopsy any suspicious growths. Some individuals hesitate due to the preparation required, but Dr. Daniel Davis, General Surgeon at Med Center Health, says the process and procedure is well worth your time.

“The bowel preparation the day before is often

the least appealing part,” said Davis. “However, the procedure itself is quick and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a short recovery period as the anesthesia wears off. About an hour of your time can significantly reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer.”

Taking this simple preventive step can make a life-saving difference. To learn more or schedule your colonoscopy, visit: https://medcenterhealth. org/condition/colon-cancer

Along the way, I’ve built lifelong friendships and had the opportunity to work alongside so many inspiring nonprofits whose passion for serving others has left a lasting impact on me.

While this will be my final issue in the role of Editor, it is not a goodbye. I look forward to continuing to support the magazine in a new capacity and remaining connected to the community that has welcomed me so wholeheartedly. Thank you to our readers, contributors, partners and friends for trusting me with your stories and for making these past three years truly unforgettable. All the best,

There’s something really special about telling a good story, especially when it’s rooted in the place you call home! I’ve already felt so welcomed into the fold and I’m incredibly grateful to be stepping into this role alongside such a thoughtful and talented team.

As Editor for VIP Bowling Green, I feel incredibly honored to help share the stories that make our community so vibrant, unique and connected. Bowling Green is filled with people who are building, creating, performing, serving and showing up for one another in meaningful ways and it is truly a privilege to highlight those voices.

My background is rooted in storytelling and community through my work in marketing and in the arts, where I have seen firsthand how powerful a well told story can be. Whether it is a feature on a local business, a spotlight on a community event or a glimpse into the lives of the people who shape this city, my goal is to ensure every page feels both inspiring and authentic. At VIP, we’re not just sharing what’s happening, we’re celebrating who is making it happen!

I’m so excited to step into this role and continue building something meaningful alongside this incredible team. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes, your stories and your community!

JUSTIN PERRY

STORY BY AUBREY REYNOLDS

Growth has always been rooted in connection. Whether on the golf course or in the real estate world, every chapter of this journey reflects those relationships—just ask Justin Perry.

Justin grew up in Franklin, Kentucky and graduated from Franklin-Simpson High School in 2004. Although he was born in Florida, his family moved back to Kentucky when he was just two years old. After high school, Justin attended Lipscomb University where he played collegiate golf for one year before transferring to Western Kentucky University. He continued his golf career at WKU for three years and graduated in 2008.

Golf played a significant role in Justin’s early professional life as well. After college, he spent nearly two years caddying for his father on the PGA Tour, an experience that allowed him to travel and gain a unique perspective on discipline and performance. Following that chapter, he worked in sports management before ultimately finding his way into real estate. He earned his real estate license in 2013, launching what would become a thriving career.

Married since 2012, Justin and his wife Brittany have spent more than a decade building a life together. They are raising three children: Carver, 10, Parks, 7 and Steller, 4. Family life remains a top priority. Their family loves to travel, spend time golfing and enjoying days at Olde Stone. Brittany and Justin also attend Living Hope Baptist Church together and

cherish family vacations to Disney and the beach.

When asked what he loves most about real estate, Justin’s answer is simple: people. “The relationships,” he shares. “Every deal is different, and I enjoy meeting people.” His business is built entirely on referrals and personal connections, a testament to the trust he has established within the community.

Professionally, 2024 marked a milestone year for Justin. He finished as the number one agent in both the Realtor Association of Southern Kentucky and Coldwell Banker in Kentucky, making it the strongest year of his career. While the accolades are impressive, Justin remains grounded, crediting hard work and consistency as the foundation of his success.

On a personal level, one of his proudest accomplishments was qualifying for the USGA Mid-Amateur tournament. As a lifelong golfer, reaching that level of competition was a meaningful achievement.

Justin credits two major influences in his life. Personally, his dad has played a significant role in shaping who he is today. Professionally, Jim “Scotty” Scott has been instrumental. Scotty provided Justin with an opportunity at Olde Stone, helping him grow his career and expand his network. “He gave me my big opportunity,” Justin shares.

Through dedication, authenticity and a people first approach, Justin continues to make an impact both professionally and

personally. Whether guiding clients through major life decisions or spending quality time with his family, his focus remains the same: building meaningful relationships and making the most of every opportunity.

The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with title sponsor Sheology, brought fresh energy to its annual Women’s Leadership Conference on March 24th with this year’s theme: UNSCRIPTED. Designed to challenge expectations and spark honest conversations, the revitalized event encouraged over 500 women in attendance to rethink the invisible roles they often carry every day. At its core, UNSCRIPTED focused on a simple but powerful idea: women don’t have to do it all. Instead, the conference highlighted the importance of choosing what truly matters and letting go of what doesn’t. Through engaging speakers and shared experiences, attendees explored how to take ownership of their time, set boundaries without guilt and prioritize their health. A LEGACY OF DerbyFashion

Since its beginnings in 1875, the Kentucky Derby has built a reputation not only as one of the most iconic horse races in the world, but also as one of its most celebrated fashion events. Dressing for Derby Day quickly became part of the experience, with widebrim hats, tailored suits and polished dresses setting the tone for Southern elegance. Over generations, fashion at Churchill Downs has evolved while still honoring its roots. Today, the Derby remains a place where tradition meets individuality, allowing guests to embrace timeless style while making bold personal statements.
