JUST A THOUGHT...

The temps are creeping up and anticipation is running high as summer peeks around the corner...

... along with everything that comes with the changing season (i.e., shorts, sundresses, bathing suits, plus vacation days with our families and time at the beach or pool). But face it; it’s been more than a few months since that bathing suit has seen the light of day. It can be a little daunting to put it on again. The pressure of social media can stack up against us and make it seem as though we need to pick ourselves apart and search for perfection. But strip away the filters and remove the safety net of hiding behind the screen, you’ll find that we’re all imperfect. Loving ourselves and focusing on everything that makes us unique, celebrating our strengths and encouraging one another is the very best look that any of us can wear—filter or no filter.

That said, supporting self-love and self-care means supporting the ways you take care of you—from the skincare regimens that keep you glowing (hey, this girl loves her Botox), to the hair products that keep locks looking their loveliest and to the fitness routines that maintain the health of your mind and body. And do not forget the wrapping on the package: fashion! What’s not to love about summer fashion? It can be incredibly affirming to find clothes that make you look and feel good, so give your closet a little boost this season, as well.

For some great inspiration on style, come out and enjoy the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style. You’ll get an up-close and personal look at some incredible specimens of motor-driven ingenuity, as well as beautiful fashion that may give you some ideas for your own look. Make a weekend out of it and explore Old Town and everything that makes this community such a treasure.

And speaking of treasure, as we welcome the approach of summer, welcome the chance to show yourself some love with some new practices, new products, new fashions and new mindsets. You are beautiful. Filter or no filter.

Perfectly Imperfect Yours,

YOUTH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Malachi McNair

Looking at Malachi McNair’s family history, being athletic seems pretty much written in his genetic code. His mom is one of the alltime top North Carolina high school track and field performers in the 400-meter and triple jump and is in the Sports Hall of Fame at East Carolina University. His dad was a multiple-sport-athlete who mastered the football field in addition to playing basketball and running track. Clearly, he’s got a lot to live up to.

At 15, the 6-foot, 2.5-inch, 235-pound McNair has shown he’s more than living up to expectations, both as an honor roll student and an incredible athlete. During his first year of playing football for Wakefield High School, he was called up to varsity and played as a sophomore, earning his first varsity letter. Over the past three months, he’s strengthened his game through some intense training with the experts at D1 Training.

has helped my athleticism tremendously,” he says. “I have been able to do things I didn’t think I could do, like having a max 370-pound deadlift, a max squat of 305 pounds and a max bench press of 225 pounds, plus finally jumping a 36-inch vertical on the box jump.”

McNair’s future training goals are to maintain momentum and increase his explosive power as well as his strength. “I want to correlate those gains to the football field and hopefully earn a D1 scholarship,” he says.

Hobbies include hanging out with friends, playing sports and “money—making it, saving it and watching it grow.” In the future, McNair dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and has interests in computer networking, technology and business.

Primarily focused on losing weight, getting stronger and having better stamina, McNair has been incredibly dedicated to reaching those goals to become a better athlete and provide his teammates with greater support on the field. That dedication has been paying off noticeably. “It’s intense and takes commitment, but my training

20 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE PARKOUR

Leaping tall walls, soaring through the air on a death-defying jump, twisting through a backflip…

Sounds like the moves of a stuntman, but those are all aspects of a training concept called parkour, a discipline that was initially adapted from a military training program devised by French naval officer Georges Hébert in the early 1900s. But even Hébert’s development of the methodology wasn’t truly original. In fact, similarities can be seen in the athletic traditions and disciplines of various indigenous tribes in Africa as well as in the practices of ancient Chinese martial arts.

As it made its way to western Europe through Hébert’s program, the training “environment” became far more urban and much less natural. It evolved further over time. By the 1990s, a Frenchman named David Bell created a training method that involved various combinations of running, climbing, vaulting, jumping, plyometrics, rolling, gymnastics and quadrupedal movement to get from point A to point B quickly and efficiently without assisting equipment. Called le parcours du combatant—“the obstacle course”—it later became known simply as parkour.

With all the various fitness and sports crazes that have come into and gone out of vogue, parkour has created a strong worldwide following—as well as some controversy. As athletically challenging as it is, parkour is often not considered a “sport” and is even unwelcome in certain areas. “To some people, parkour is disruptive, destructive and disorderly because they see a group of people doing something they view as destructive and mislabel it as ‘parkour,’ or they see something they don’t like and don't take the time to understand it,” explains Harry Sprinkles, parkour department head at Urban Evolution, a Mindshift Gym.

an

“Others may not view parkour as a sport because they only see the big, flashy techniques that parkour practitioners pull off, like doing a backflip or jumping a death-defying distance across a tall wall, and not consider all of the training it took to accomplish,” he goes on. “A ‘simple’ jump across two different walls could have taken that person a day and a half to master, but an onlooker may not see all of the time and energy put into practicing that jump and the progressions toward it.”

A wall can transform from
‘obstacle’ to an ‘access point,’ and this mind-shift transfers to other aspects of your life.
- Bill Wotowiec

Naysayers may say what they will, but the full-body engagement required in parkour make it an undeniably incredible workout, one that involves every muscle group in addition to exercising the brain. “If you train right, it’s a comprehensive workout no matter what you're doing,” says Sprinkles. “Even the simplest jump will have you not just using your legs, but also your arms, core, ankles and back, which is something that some other sports don't offer. Additionally, you gain greater coordination, bodyweight strength, cardiovascular endurance, a deeper understanding of your outside world and an increased ability to problem solve and critically think about your surroundings.”

Urban Evolution a MindShift gym owner Bill Wotowiec would agree. “Parkour helps your brain fitness as well as your physical fitness by changing the way you look at the environment. A wall can transform from an ‘obstacle’ to an ‘access point,’ and this mindshift transfers to other aspects of your life.”

The challenge here isn’t just your own physical condition—it's also the conditions you’re training in, not to mention the whole concept of mind over matter. “The different styles and types of objects one has to deal with in their training world like wood, concrete and rails are challenges in themselves, but added to those are the challenges of finding and breaking your own limits,” Sprinkles says.

According to Sprinkles, nothing is required for parkour other than a “solid mind and an eagerness to learn from failure.” There are, however, some tools that will improve your training and increase your rate of progression. “Buy good shoes, just a comfortable flat shoe with a rubber sole,” he advises. “Also, find a training buddy. Training in a group of two or more can make training more fun and enjoyable and help you stay accountable.”

As intense as it can be, Wotowiec contends that parkour is for everyone. “You can use the techniques at your own fitness level, like PK Silver, which is designed for geriatric rehab.”

“Most practitioners of parkour never go over heights of eight feet in their training,” Sprinkles notes. “In fact, a lot of basic parkour stays low-to-the-ground, lessening the amount of impact and decreasing the factor of danger.”

Based in Alexandria, Urban Evolution a MindShift gym offers safe, guided parkour training. “We provide a set of progressions and regressions designed to level up your ability safely and effectively,” says Sprinkles. “Not only are the classes and open gym sessions a good place to train and challenge yourself, it's also a place where you can build a community invested in your progress, make new friends and learn as a team.”

LOCAL NON-PROFIT USES MOVEMENT TO TRANSFORM LEARNING

For students in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), learning is a moving experience.

Thanks to local non-profit organization Move2Learn (M2L), students’ curriculum is infused with movement and exercise to transform learning. Social-emotional and academic learning (SEAL) are at the forefront of ACPS’s priorities, so the inclusion of movement can bring about desirable results, even helping students deal with their emotions.

“I've known about M2L for many years and I became one of our school's two Movement Mentors about four years ago,” says Melissa Poggio, ACPS lead special education teacher at Charles Barrett Elementary School. “M2L provides us with those important resources that help make learning happen and their SEAL lessons have also been really helpful in providing students with understanding of the 'why' behind movement.”

BETTER FOCUS FOR LEARNING

Founded in 2009, M2L now outfits more than 150 ACPS classrooms from kindergarten through grade 12. M2L’s founder and CEO, Brooke Sydnor Curran, was restless in the classroom as a child and created the program to benefit students like herself.

“I saw the need and was in a spot where I could help students the way I wish I had been helped,” Curran says.

The M2L organization offers packages that mix and match wobble stools, wiggle cushions, balance ball chairs, fidget bands, underdesk pedal bikes and stationary bikes. M2L promotes physical activity so students can maximize learning potential and improve classroom focus.

“Coming off the pandemic especially, our students were learning from home for a pretty long time,” says Curran. “This is a way for students to support catch-up. It’s one of the tools teachers have.”

Curran notes that by including movement in learning, children learn about the mind-body connection, which promotes blood flow to the brain and stimulates neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells. In addition, M2L says movement may decrease stress, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, fatigue, anger, depression and anxiety. This is done by stirring up healthy chemicals like dopamine and endorphins. Physical movement also offers students a chance to move information to long-term memory from their short-term memory, which may ‘clear space’ for more learning.

“I believe the work M2L is doing for ACPS is wonderful and so many students are benefiting from daily movement in their classrooms,” says ACPS parent Nicole Jones. “Active seating, stationary bikes and other brain break activit[ies] throughout the day allow students to exert energy in different ways during classroom learning. It’s fun and shifts the mindset back to being ready for engagement in the classroom.”

EDUCATOR TOOLKIT

In addition to the equipment supplied to ACPS classrooms and schools, M2L provides an educator toolkit with helpful information to integrate physical movement and activity inside and outside the classroom. The M2L toolkit contains fun activities for classrooms, gets children moving and heart rates elevated. Toolkits include items for classrooms like movement cubes, fitness decks and fitness clock posters with suggested activities like crunches, jumping jacks and running in place. The movement equipment and toolkits have proven very popular with ACPS educators.

“We have a waiting list right now. Teachers have been waiting since last May for these materials,” Curran says. “Each of these packages costs $1,000.”

In addition to the educator toolkit, M2L provides comprehensive teacher training, showing how to use the tools. By offering both the toolkit and training, educators optimize equipment use and all the benefits of movement and learning.

ACTIVE, FLEXIBLE SEATING

M2L notes that flexible seating options are game-changers for teachers and students. Educators have reported back saying they have seen tremendous results in improved attention spans and behaviors. The organization has earned kudos from ACPS educators who use the equipment and incorporate it into their classroom day.

“M2L really brings movement to the forefront of our classrooms in Alexandria,” Poggio says. “We have so many educators throughout Alexandria City who know the value of movement in classrooms, whether it be movement breaks or flexible seating, but have limited budgets and often cannot provide these tools to students.”

26 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

STATIONARY BIKES

Stationary bikes are placed in libraries and hallways as well as principals’ and counselors’ offices. The library bikes have a book holder so students can pedal and read simultaneously. Regarding counselors’ and principals’ office placement, educators have found that upset students calm down much quicker if they get a few minutes on the stationary bike, allowing them to get their aggression and stress out before returning to class.

“We just had a quote from a principal saying that a student came in incredibly angry, [rode] on the bike for 10 minutes, talked it out for a minute or two after he got off the bike and was back in the classroom within five minutes,” Curran says.

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

ACPS parents and students are fans of M2L’s mission in the classroom.

“I am a mom of a 10-year-old who is part of the Spanish immersion program at John Adams Elementary School. I’ve known about the M2L program for over two years,” says Jones. “I asked my child about M2L. He knew about it and said his school was pretty involved. He thought it was a great idea and that all children should have the opportunity to move throughout their day for better participation.”

FUNDING FOR MOVE2LEARN

M2L receives funding in three ways: from grants, individual donors and donations from local or regional businesses.

THE CDC AGREES

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that “classroom physical activity can benefit students by improving their concentration and ability to stay on-task in the classroom and reducing disruptive behavior, such as fidgeting.” In addition, the CDC claims physical activity improves students’ motivation and engagement in the learning process and their academic performance, bringing about higher grades and test scores.

“M2L is such a great idea, as it provides ACPS educators with active seating and stationary bikes in their respective classrooms, promoting movement for all students to learn better and to stay engaged throughout their busy learning day,” says Poggio.

MAY 2023 • 27
“IN OUR MINDS, FUNDRAISING IS NOT JUST BEGGING PEOPLE FOR MONEY,” CURRAN SAYS. “IT’S OPENING UP THE DOOR FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY — IT REALLY IS — AND THAT’S WHAT WE DO.”

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL

M2L offers programming before and after school in ACPS by partnering with teachers and schools with clubs and after-school programs. Outof-school programs offer students opportunities to try physical activities they may never have been offered before.

“We’ve got running, we’ve got walking, we’ve got lacrosse, we’ve got boxercise,” Curran says. “We supply everything from sports bras to socks to hijabs—anything that is a barrier for a student to participate, to meet their peers, to try something new.”

THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

BEING CREATED BY PHOTO FILTERS + INFLUENCERS...

+ WHY YOU SHOULD EMBRACE

IMPERFECTION IN A DIGITAL WORLD

MAY 2023 • 39

Social media platforms display the beautiful people — the Kim Kardashians, JLos and Harry Styles of the world. Attributes like their flawless good looks, strong physiques and up-close perfection are not lost on social media users.

“You go on social media and you see all of these beautiful people who edit those photos and who have plastic surgery or who have enhancements to their bodies,” says 20-year-old Katie Foreman, a college junior. “They make it look like it’s natural to look that way and that other people should look that way.”

And it’s true. Some people see what appears to be perfection on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook and think they need to up their game. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported that in 2020, 72% of cosmetic surgeons saw patients come in for consultations because they “wanted to look better in selfies.” In 2021, another study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons claimed that 48.5% reported being influenced by social media to consider undergoing cosmetic procedures.

“The Kardashian Effect is in full swing, and people get simple enhancements done, have minor procedures performed, all the way up to major surgery to achieve various perceptions of ‘perfect,’” says Alexandria therapist Alycia Burant from Healthy Minds Therapy. “People are having everything you can think of done to alter their appearance, work towards 'perfection' and enhance their self-confidence.”

Is This Really a ‘Thing?’

You’d be surprised at how many people are getting cosmetic enhancements. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there are 13 million minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the US annually.

Burant listed popular procedures and enhancements like Botox, fillers, wig/hair extensions, acrylic nails, laser treatments, chemical peels, waxing/laser hair removal treatments, plastic surgery (nose job, facelift, pinned ears,

breast augmentation, tummy tuck, butt lift), liposuction, spray tan, eyebrow laminating/waxing, false eyelashes/ eyelash extensions, permanent makeup, body-shaping corsets, waist trainers, microneedle, cryo fat melting treatments and colonics.

“The list is endless and the options are enticing. If someone wants it, it is available,” Burant says. “Those are all physical things people do to ‘appear perfect.’”

Big Business

It’s stunning. There are about eight billion people in the world and, as of 2023, 4.9 billion social media users, according to Demand Sage. On social media, beauty is big business. In fact, on TikTok, under the hashtag #beauty, there are over 173.7 billion views. Kardashian wannabes, plastic surgery addicts and countless people are ever-increasingly impacted by the power of perfection on social media and the possibilities the plastic surgery industry presents.

“You just look at these perfect images and you want to look like that,” says Isabelle Churchill, a 20-year-old college student.

“Whenever I see pictures on social media, it makes me feel bad about myself and I’ll be like, ‘I need to work out, or I shouldn’t eat this right now.’ Constantly comparing yourself to others really ruins your self-esteem.” Churchill noted that one of her best friends had a nose job and got lip fillers on her 18th birthday. “I thought she was so beautiful beforehand,” she says.

JUST A THOUGHT... FROM THE PRO

We

"Natural or naturally enhanced beauty are still relevant. You don’t have to have the enhanced ‘look,’ but you do need to ensure that your provider is hearing what you are saying and able to provide results consistent with what you are looking for. It’s important to remember that selfies are not what you actually look like in the real world because of the technology within the cameras. Striving to achieve a perfect selfie is a dangerous way to book services/enhancements.

Enhancement Risks

The risks are real. As with almost any physical enhancement, patients need to understand the drawbacks. Burant addresses the idea of enhancements from the possible mental health implications and risks of going under the knife.

“Risks include buyer's remorse or dissatisfaction from a botched enhancement or procedure with long-term regret and dissatisfaction, which could lead to depression, isolation and anxiety among many other possible mental health challenges,” Burant says. “Patients who choose to go under the knife may face criticism and judgment from others, resulting in the exact opposite of what they were hoping to achieve.”

Often physical alteration of one’s body is in an effort to both increase self-esteem and acceptance from others. If a patient experiences rejection from others because of such procedures, Burant warns, the patient runs the risk of experiencing and developing increased shame, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, again, increasing the likelihood of depression, isolation or anxiety.

In addition, an unhealthy obsession can develop from going under the knife. Typically, one procedure is never enough, Burant notes. If a patient experiences extreme satisfaction and improved self-esteem from a procedure, this further perpetuates and encourages the person to seek and pursue further treatments. An unhealthy obsession with altering physical appearance can develop.

live in a multidimensional world that isn’t a 1-D pixelated view."
- Ashley Carmen, FNP-C | Aiyana Atelier

“As a mental health professional, I believe the change must start from within,” says Burant. “It doesn’t matter how many alterations, procedures or enhancements someone gets. If they are not at peace within themselves, no number of procedures will heal their emotional turmoil.”

Celebrities

Endorsing Procedures

Celebrities are a mixed bag when it comes to revealing their physical enhancements. Some keep it quiet, but others publicly endorse their plastic surgery. On July 21, 2021, designer Marc Jacobs touted his facelift on Instagram and received more than 54,000 likes. He included the hashtags #f*ckgravity and #livelovelift. Former supermodel Linda Evangelista admitted to Botox injections in a Harper's Bazaar article in 2016. Women's Health shared that actress Kaley Cuoco revealed having a breast augmentation was "the best thing I ever did." She also said, "As much as you want to love your inner self, I’m sorry, you also want to look good. I don’t think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that’s amazing."

Filters: Fun or Dangerous?

Suffice to say, the pressure to stay fabulous in Hollywood drives many an A-List actor or actress to go under the knife for the sake of their career. Others often employ advanced filter usage or Photoshopping skills to appear thinner, younger or generally more attractive in social media posts.

“Filters can provide a variety of experiences and outcomes for people. For some, they provide innocent, fun and lighthearted laughs,” says Burant. “For others, they are used to alter their appearance and provide an instant self-confidence boost. And still, for some, they are used to alter their appearance in such drastic ways in efforts to mask their identity. The only 'dangerous' thing about using filters is the barrier it puts between the person and the world. It does not afford the person the opportunity to show their authentic self to others.”

MAY 2023 • 43
"... the change must start from within... If they are not at peace within themselves, no number of procedures will heal their emotional turmoil.”

Experts say there is a correlation between filters and self-image. According to Dr. Jeeyun “Sophia” Baik, a communications professor at the University of San Diego, a 2021 study by Parents Together reported that teens who often use beauty filters are more interested in cosmetic surgery and changing their skin color compared to those who use filters less frequently.

“People tend to take multiple selfies until they are satisfied and spend a long time to tweak and edit the selfies before uploading them on social media,” Baik says. “To edit the images, they use various apps and filters.”

College junior Churchill says she wouldn’t consider plastic surgery, but admits to using filters and that, when she wants to post a selfie, she must take “at least 100” photos before she finds the right one.

“Then you have to ask all your friends’ opinions on which one they like so you can pick the perfect picture,” she says, adding that once the photo is posted, she needs to gain at least 600 "likes" to feel satisfied.

So What’s the Problem?

Young people find themselves struggling with mental health in general after the pandemic. Add to that the multitude of pressures to look good, appear happy and fit in, and the train runs off the tracks.

According to a 2015 article in the National Library of Medicine, girls who regularly shared selfies on social media, relative to those who did not, reported significantly higher overvaluation of shape and weight, body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint and internalization of the thin ideal. Such intense scrutiny could potentially lead some

to consider going under the knife or needle to feel better about their appearance.

“Not every cosmetic surgery is always bad, but the main issue at stake is that social media users can be prompted to consider the options of cosmetic surgery out of an unduly heightened sense of inadequacy,” Baik says. “If such decisions around cosmetic surgery are made during vulnerable and sensitive times in particular, the surgery itself may not necessarily fulfill the person’s self-esteem.”

What’s the Solution?

Having any procedure done for self-enhancement is a personal decision, but experts agree there are certain considerations to keep in mind.

“It is best to try and sort through any underlying issues before attempting to alter your appearance for what may be a temporary or fleeting fix,” says Burant. “Always seek consultation with your doctor before moving forward with any permanent alteration.”

A few helpful strategies: try starting with small enhancements like hair extensions, false eyelashes or sunless tanning. These options may offer a boost of confidence without negative long-term implications. When considering a major enhancement, it is always best to seek multiple opinions. Meet with at least three professionals to ensure you feel comfortable and confident with the procedure. Turn to your support system for processing and feedback, which may also be helpful in the event things do not go well and you need support after the alterations. Building your support network and increasing your comfort with vulnerability will lead to improvement with increased self-esteem and long-term success.

They say that there are a lot of fish in the sea, but sometimes we find that we’re fishing in the wrong sea. So was the case for Eleanor Prendergast and Mark Stein when the two connected online in 2016. At the time, both had exhausted their searches for love locally and neared the end of their respective subscriptions to a dating app. After finding that, despite their geographical distance, they knew a lot of the same people, they decided to take things off-line and meet in person.

Over the next five years, they nurtured their relationship across the miles between New Jersey and Virginia. In the summer of 2021, they bought a home together in Fairfax. After a year of living together, Mark made their dream home even more of a dream when he asked Eleanor to marry him on the back deck, overlooking Lake Royal at sunset.

A year and a half later, Eleanor wore a long-sleeved ivory crepe Tadashi Shoji Dawson wedding gown with a twist detail in the front as she walked down the aisle at Above ALX on October 22, 2022. With their kids standing beside them as their attendants, Mark and Eleanor exchanged vows and were pronounced married—though their real vows to each other came later in the evening, in a moment they shared privately at sunset. “We were the only ones that could hear, and it ended up being one of the most special, most intimate parts of the whole evening,” says Mark.

Celebrating with a reception catered by Well Dunn Catering, the newlyweds spent the evening with their guests at Above ALX, enjoying their first hours of married life. “We had such amazing views and the most gorgeous sunset we were lucky enough to have that day,” Mark notes. “All of our guests commented on how beautiful and unique the location was.”

After being sent off by their guests to a mini-moon to Shenandoah, the couple came back to Fairfax with plans to take their official honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast of Italy this fall.

TAME THE TABOO, A NEW TYPE OF LADIES NIGHT

Until recently, with reasonable effort, I found it easy enough to achieve my health and fitness goals. However, at 45, aging gracefully is proving to be more difficult. My peers and I share a collective of seemingly small, intangible, bewildering and frustrating symptoms:

Random hot flashes. Sleepless nights. Unexplainable weight gain. Irregular menstrual cycles.

Yes, I’m referring to the inevitable “change,” AKA perimenopause. It can begin as early as 45 and last 8-10 years. That’s the bad news. The good news is much more empowering... A medical movement is finally evolving to shed light, start open conversations and provide real treatment options.

DiscovHER Health Presents Tame the Taboo. Founder Jenna Perkins and her team are taking the area by storm with intimate, informative and enlightening sessions. Women in the DMV area are hosting ladies nights for friends and colleagues (libations welcome) with DiscovHER specialists for real (and validating) discussions about safe, evidence-based treatment options for menopause experiences.

NEW HAIRCARE, SKINCARE + FASHION FOR THE SEASON

56 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

We prep our lawns, houses and cars for the changing season, but sometimes we forget that the air conditioning isn’t the only thing that needs a little tune-up as the air gets warmer. Before you start wondering what you’ve missed on your domestic to-do list, we’re talking about you, honey. You, as in that wonderful package that makes up the person that is you. Because, as anxious as we all may be to celebrate the burning of Old Man Winter in effigy, there’s some other work that needs to be done for you to look and feel your best.

We’re not talking about anything drastic here, so take a breath. No makeovers. No downtime. Just some simple ways that you can tweak the contents of your medicine cabinet and your closet to give you everything you need to approach the upcoming heat with confidence. Read on for tips from the experts on heat-proofing your hair, skin and style.

Lock It In

Prepping your hair for the seasonal change that comes with the arrival of spring and summer may not be something you consciously think about, but those lovely locks of yours definitely need a different routine for the warmer months. The heat, the humidity, the sun… they all affect the way hair acts and looks.

“As you transition from winter to spring, your hair experiences dryness,” says Joelle Mitchell, expert stylist and owner of Joelle

Mode salon. “Typically, our hair takes a bit of a beating over the winter months due to lack of moisture—which carries over into the spring. As the weather changes, now is the time to introduce moisturizing products into your haircare routine, such as steam moisturizing treatments and my favorite products, replenishing moisture shampoos and conditioners by Milbon, a product line

WINTER MONTHS DUE TO LACK OF MOISTURE—WHICH -

Bathing suit season isn’t just a reason to watch what you put in your mouth—it’s a reason to watch what you put in your hair, as well. Chlorine in pool water strips hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry, brittle and prone to split ends. Regular exposure to chlorine also makes hair extremely porous and can even change its color. While you’re putting on your bikini, make sure to add leave-in conditioner to your ensemble. “I tell all my clients who are avid swimmers how important this is to do before getting in the water,” says Mitchell, who swears by Milbon’s Weightless Moisture Mist.

Think a change will do you good? It’ll also help your hair. “Color and cuts are sometimes placed on the back burner over the winter and spring is a great time to revive your look,” Mitchell notes. “Cleaning up split ends or reshaping the haircut after the dry and damaging winter months will refresh your hair and make it look healthier. Adding a pop of color with highlight also helps brighten your face after a long, dark winter.”

Battling frizz may seem unavoidable as the temps climb and the humidity rises, but Mitchell recommends adding a keratin smoothing treatment in early summer to get ready for the humid season. “This treatment smooths damaged and frizzy hair and the Milbon Anti-Frizz line are my go-to products. Their Anti-Frizz Oil is the best.”

As you add things into your routine for the season, there are a few things to put on the no-no list. They may seem harmless, but in the heat of summer, products like gel, hairspray and dry shampoo tend to create a nasty film on hair. If you love a hot shower, note that hot water dries out your scalp and makes the ends of hair brittle and prone to breakage. Take warm showers instead. The air outside is hot enough!

MAY 2023 • 57

Here's the Skin(ny)

Hair isn't the only thing that needs attention. Warmer air dries skin too, so your skincare needs a reboot for the season.

“The heat of summer and even the warmer temps of spring can cause skin to feel oilier and more prone to breakouts and sun damage,” says Ashley Carmen, FNP-C, and owner of Aiyana Atelier. “The focus here should be adjusting your skincare regimen to include lightweight cleansers and moisturizers, antioxidants, gentle exfoliation and, of course, sunscreen.”

The words light and hydrating should top the list when it comes to choosing a cleanser for the warmer months of the year. “You also want a cleanser that can help keep the pH of your skin stable, which is often disrupted by heat and humidity. Look for ingredients that are anti-inflammatory, cooling and soothing. Vitamin E is a great ingredient that helps maintain the skin’s natural barrier and aids in the healing of skin damage,” says Carmen, who recommends the Aiyana Atelier Private Line Lavender Creamy Cleanser with lavender and Vitamin E.

Antioxidants are important in combating sun damage, so look for products with antioxidant properties. As the sun intensifies, skin is at risk for premature aging as well as the development of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of collagen and pigmentation issues. Carmen recommends products with Vitamin C and Vitamin E to slow and reverse the premature aging process of skin, specifically C&E Advanced by PCA Skin. And while moisturizing may seem unnecessary, it’s actually a key part of spring and summer skin care. Carmen recommends using a softer, more lightweight formula like PCA Skin’s ReBalance.

Notice more oil on your face as the weather warms up? You’re not alone. Higher temps increase the production of oil and the breakout

factor exponentially. Fortunately, exfoliating can help clear up your face by reducing oil buildup, unclogging pores and avoiding breakouts. “AHAs like glycolic acid can also help the skin retain moisture while exfoliating,” says Carmen. Topping her product recommendation: Aiyana Atelier Private Line Glycolic Pads.

As the harshness of the sun intensifies, sunscreen is essential. Skincare products like AHAs and BHAs can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so sunscreen is even more of a must. “Look for

a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 or higher and apply water resistant if you’re at the pool or beach,” says Carmen, recommending PCA Skin Sheer Tint SPF. “Chemical-free, mineral-based sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays is preferable, and tinted sunscreen is also a great alternative to heavy foundation in the summer. And, of course, always reapply every few hours while you’re out in the sun!”

What you eat can also affect your skin, so add fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids as well as walnuts, avocados, tomatoes, bell peppers and broccoli to your diet. Collagen supplements and biotin also rate a place on your shopping list.

Fashion 411

Skin and haircare aren’t the only aspects of your routine that need some overhaul as we transition into the warmer months of late spring and summer. All those chunky knits and jeans will probably get shoved to the back of the closet to make way for lighter fare like tanks, tees and shorts—and seasoned style maven Emilie Kyle, owner of online women’s clothing boutique Current Aveline, has some tips that will warm up your wardrobe.

“As we move into the spring and summer months, you’ll see different cuts make their way in and they can be styled in different ways,” Kyle says. “Crop tops and even cropped jackets and blazers work well with high-waisted bottoms to give a fresh, layered look that isn’t too heavy or hot for the season. For the ladies, stripes always trend over the summer. Think classic nautical or thin stripes in a rainbow of colors in a single top, which is reminiscent of the late 70s and 80s. Or try small floral prints covering dresses, shorts and blouses. For men, polo shirts are a classic. Wear them in a great fabric with a flattering fit for your body with a tailored pant or straight leg denim.”

There are, of course, some staples that Kyle recommends for every closet, regardless of gender. “A wide leg pant or jean and a white sneaker or vintage-look New Balance sneakers seem to work with a lot of other trends right now,” she says.

Back for more this year are some trends we’ve seen in past summers, proving their longevity despite the fickle whims of fashion. “Denim maxi skirts [and] flowy Grecian-style dresses remain in style,” Kyle notes. “We also saw a lot of crop tops last summer, and they’ll still work great for the hot, humid DC temps this year.”

On the outs are a few things you may recognize from your own closet. “Trade out a hi-low hemline for a column dress or column skirt,” Kyle recommends. “Also, ditch the matching lounge sets, cold shoulder tops and super-exaggerated, oversized pieces. Oversized is okay, but the huge pieces are out.”

Kyle is offering a peek at her own love list for spring and summer items. “I really love tasteful flutter/ruffled shoulders and feminine smocked dresses, leather sandals, non-distressed denim and easy-to-wear dresses that take me from the studio to dinner.”

A VIP GUIDE TO SPEED + STYLE WEEKEND

The smell of octane, the roar of engines, the sleek and beautiful lines that turn heads. Since they were invented, cars have been more than just the result of necessity—they are the outcome of vision and design. Likewise, fashion is the merging of concept and creativity, the birthing of something beautiful, unique and desirable.

Celebrating its inaugural run in 2019, the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style brings together fashion and cars, hailing the beauty and form of each in a way that also celebrates the sophistication and style of Old Town. Presented by Burke & Herbert Bank, the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, with all of the proceeds generated by car registration and the event’s many generous sponsors given to ALIVE!, the largest private organization addressing the needs of Alexandria’s less fortunate and the Campanga Center, whose mission is to provide children, teens and adults in the local area with exceptional educational and social development programs. “We have raised $60,000 for local charities in the past three years—$30,000 at last year’s event alone!” says Rick Myllenbeck, founder and chairman of the event.

“We wanted to create a unique non-profit event that commemorates the speed, performance and elegance of exotic cars paired with the style and fashion of London, Paris, Milan and New York, all while highlighting the heart and spirit of the community of Old Town,” Myllenbeck says. “At the same time, we want to host a highly unusual and compelling event in Alexandria to increase business for shop owners, raise money for charity and elevate the stature of the city on the global map. In doing this, we are bringing together

exquisite cars and car enthusiasts, fashion, art, music and style to create a one-day festival of great energy and fun as well as generating widespread interest and visibility for Alexandria, drawing crowds to its restaurants and shops and appealing to new visitors.”

Last year, in fact, the festival brought in an estimated 15,000 people—a boon for Alexandria’s tourism and economy, as many festival goers explored Old Town, dining at its fantastic restaurants and visiting its many local shops. “The festival has become one of Alexandria’s biggest events of the year,” notes Myllenbeck.

MAY 20 | HIGH-OCTANE BALL

Kicking off the weekend, the festival committee will host the annual High-Octane Ball at the Belle Haven Country Club on Saturday, May 20. The ticketed event will run from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., with delicious food, fine wine and libations, music and a special live, silent auction. Entry tickets are available to the general public via EventBrite on a limited basis, with proceeds benefiting local charities. This year's ball is a call out to Audrey Hepburn, with a Breakfast at Tiffany's theme.

MAY 21 | THE FESTIVAL

The main event fires up on Sunday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and spans the Market Square area of the 200 to 400 blocks of King Street as well as the 100 blocks of North Royal and North Fairfax. The festival will feature more than 100 rare and exotic cars and motorcycles from the local area. “These are beautiful machines that are rarely seen stopped and up-close,” says Myllenbeck. “Not only do we celebrate the cars, their history, their importance and their performance, we also celebrate their style. When one thinks of an exotic car, it’s usually because they are beautiful and fast. At the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style, we park these awesome vehicles and share them with the general public. In addition to displaying these superb automobiles and motorcycles, we will also be featuring some racing cars and some very stylish watercraft.”

Car enthusiasts will love seeing automobiles from the 1950s through the 1980s including such makes as Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Aston-Martin, Mercedes, MG, Lancia, Austin-Healey, Shelby Cobra/Mustang, Morgan, Lamborghini, BMW, Corvette, Triumph, Dodge and Maserati. Motorcycles include Ducati, Triumph, Suzuki and more.

FASHION

As eye-catching as these masterfully designed examples of engineering are, the fashion on display during the festival is equally striking. “To emphasize the style element of the event, a Fashion Celebration will take place at noon at the intersection of King and Fairfax Streets,” says Myllenbeck. “Our own Monte Durham

from Salon Monte and celebrity TV personality famous for TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta will narrate a pairing on beautifully dressed models, accompanied by some of the most stunning cars.”

LIVE MUSIC + SPONSORS

Additionally, there will be live music performed throughout the day, as well as other special events. Sponsors to this year’s festival include title sponsor Burke & Herbert Bank as well as Yates Automotive, McEnearney Associates Realtors, Gina Baca of Weichert Realtors, Gwen Hickman, Ferrari of Washington, Salon Monte, McAleese & Associates and many others, a number of whom will have a canopy providing information about the organization and its offerings.

Cenatiempo Biancolella + PIEDMONTESE ROAST PEPPERS

70 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE PERFECT
PAIRINGS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY UNWINED | STORY BY BRIAN ACTON

Cenatiempo’s Biancolella was the wine that did me in. Admittedly, the deck was stacked against me. It was a north vs. south Italian wine showdown that pitted me against Vanessa Moore, owner of UnWined & Revel Wine & Craft Beer Bar. Four wines, each paired with four courses. Sounds simple enough, but I was in hostile territory. The judges were former military who had been stationed in Italy’s south for four years and had a bona fide love of Primitivo from Puglia, which is about as bold and southern as you can get! Well, when the dust settled and the votes were tallied, I was happy with how my wines did—that is, except for my pick for a white wine.

My poor little Blatterle, which is the only varietal bottling in existence since there are less than four acres of the grape planted in Italy’s Alto Adige, got absolutely trounced by Cenatiempo’s Biancolella Kalimera. It was a complete shutout. Though definitely biased, I think the judges were dead right on this score. While both wines lean in on the academic side of the spectrum, Cenatiempo’s Kalimera is a wine of gravitas. It would likely be a premier cru in another region. Lesson learned. Never bring a purely academic wine to a wine fight.

Cenatiempo was founded in 1945 on the island of Ischia, which is a volcanic island located roughly 18 miles off the coast of Campania, near Naples. Ischia was home to Italy’s oldest Greek colony, which first gave the island its name—Pithecusa. Viticulture on the island dates back to at least Roman times. Tiberius, the second emperor of Rome, even made reference to the quality of the wines. Biancolella is a grape variety that is native to Ischia. Modern evidence dates it to at least 1867, while many believe it is much older. Studies suggest that it is closely related to Falanghina, but its parents have not been identified. Biancolella flourishes at high altitudes, which makes it uniquely adapted to viticulture on Ischia as its vineyards tend to be planted on cliffs where homes or hotels would never dare be built, at elevations that can even be over 600 meters.

Kalimera is Cenatiempo’s home vineyard, situated at 450 meters of elevation at the southwestern slope of Monte Epomeo in the commune of Serrara Fontana. Farming follows biodynamic principles. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine ferments and ages in cement. Cenatiempo’s Biancolella 2020 ($38) is a brilliant expression of the variety. Wildflowers, hay and thyme on the nose are met by grapefruit and nuances of pineapple on the palate. This medium-bodied sipper is buoyed by a saline salty acidity. It is both juicy and precise. A truly unique wine that also delivers the goods.

To pair, I’d recommend British Chef Simon Hopkinson’s recipe for Piedmontese Roast Peppers. His “Roast Chicken and Other Stories” is easily in my top five cookbooks, but this recipe also resides on the BBC Food site. There is a companion video series called “The Good Cook,” which you can still find online. It is honest, authentic and endearing. Despite being an island, Ischia is actually known for its produce rather than its seafood. Its hummus laden soils and mineral loaded water make it quite verdant. Its produce routinely fetches some of the highest prices in Italy. The acidity and freshness of the wine, not to mention its herbal references, make it just the thing for this sort of summer fare. As with all simple recipes, the quality of your ingredients is very important.

Recipe PIEDMONTESE ROAST PEPPERS

Ingredients

• 8-12 ripe plum tomatoes

• 4 red peppers, stalks left on (for decoration), cut lengthways in half, seeds removed

• 4 garlic cloves, sliced

• 5-6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 8 large canned anchovies, cut in half lengthways

• Small handful fresh basil

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Pour boiling water over the plum tomatoes, leave for 10 seconds, carefully remove from the water and refresh in a bowl of cold water. Peel off the tomato skins.

Place the halved peppers into an ovenproof dish (preferably one that will be nice enough to present later), cut-side up.

Place the garlic inside the peppers and then fit the tomatoes inside too, pushing them gently into the space. Add a small pinch of salt and a grinding of freshly ground black pepper. Spoon over the olive oil and then place into the oven. Bake for about 45 minutes to one hour, turning the heat down a little if you notice any excessive scorching of the peppers.

Once they are nicely softened and have slightly collapsed, remove the peppers from the oven. Criss-cross each pepper half with an anchovy, baste with the oily juices and allow to cool to room temperature.

Unwined. Where surprises await and exemplary service is the norm. Top quality, hand-selected wine, craft beer, gourmet, and gifts smart team that tastes everything and tailors each recommendation to suit you.
