There are interesting things happening in the retail sector for those who are prepared to embrace new opportunities.

Deloitte’s Retail Trends 2019 – Retail Reinvented - reports that the retail industry is transforming, with new channels driving growth and key trends revolutionising the in-store experience such as redefining convenience for customers.

Consumer tech, wareables and smart home are all leading the revolution with the connected home, automation, security and convenience all offering huge potential to retailers.

VIP UK’s Head of Sales, Elliott Hodgeon commented “The retail sector has taken a bit of a battering in the press over the past 12-18 months, with the demise of some well-known high-street retailers.

Yet having undertaken a number of visits to our customers over the past 6 months, I have seen some fantastic examples of resellers who are bucking the trend and demonstrating the value that the high street still has to play in the customer experience. These examples have been

varied; from expertise to added value, from immediacy of product to diversification of the product portfolio but they all have one thing in common, a willingness to try something different.

One thing’s for sure, resellers who stand still are at risk. Although I can fully appreciate a business’ hesitancy to invest in new products or avenues, it is imperative that they constantly evolve in order to stay relevant, in what is an ever-changing retail environment. VIP are no different and over the past 24 months, have made strides to diversify our offering, adding several new categories to our portfolio, including smart home (HomeGuard), children’s audio (BuddyPhones), Mesh Wi-Fi and LFD (Newline). In doing so, we hope to also future-proof your businesses, providing you with additional revenue streams as well as accompanying education and marketing to support. How would you explain mesh in one sentence?

It completely blankets any house, up to 600 square metres, in perfect wifi, and is installed in 5-10 minutes with 3 extremely easy steps.

Where do you predict the UK mesh market will go over the next 12 months?

The mesh Wi-Fi market has been one of the fastest growing product categories of the UK tech market over the last 18 months. Last year it grew by 40% (CAGR), with our NOVA mesh series being the fastest growing product in the category.

Over the next 12 months we are expecting an even faster acceleration in the UK as consumers increasingly turn to mesh Wi-Fi to solve their home WiFi coverage issues. This is being driven by greater awareness of the technology

and its benefits, as well customers opting to buy mesh Wi-Fi instead of the traditional powerline solutions due to the price points between powerline and mesh getting ever closer. Our Nova MW3 products are driving this due to the RRP price point being very similar to equivalent spec powerline solutions.

With a Global market size of 11.14 Billion predicted by 2025, what advice would you offer independent retailers to help them capitalise on this opportunity?

Sell your expertise, not just a product.

Customers ultimately buy tech products to solve a problem. So be the trusted expert on solving their problems.

We are big company globally with a turnover of over $1 billion a year and over 3000 employees. However in the UK we are a relatively small team of 15 staff, and are relative newcomers in this market. Therefore, I enjoy the pride and passion with which the whole team drives the Tenda UK business forward.
