About The Indianapolis REMARKABLE PERFORMANCES, extraordinary prizes and a festival atmosphere characterize the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI) as “the ultimate violin contest…” writes the Chicago Tribune. Laureates of The Indianapolis have emerged as outstanding artists in concert halls across the globe.

For 17 days every four years, 40 of the world’s brightest talents come here to perform some of the most beautiful music ever written before enthusiastic audiences in venues throughout the city including the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Performing Arts and the Hilbert Circle Theatre, where the finalists collaborate with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Of the prizes awarded, one of the most significant is the four-year loan of a concert instrument from the Competition collection which comprises the 1683 “ex-Gingold” Stradivari violin and several modern instruments. Under the guidance of Thomas J. Beczkiewicz, Founding Director, and the late Josef Gingold, who had served on the juries of every major violin competition in the world, the IVCI became known by the musical and media communities as one of the world’s most compelling competitions. In 1994, the artistic leadership of this Competition passed from Gingold to his most famous pupil, Jaime Laredo, one of the master musicians of our time.

Since 1982, Indianapolis has hosted 11 Competitions. It is a unique showcase for the world’s most gifted young violinists and a demonstration of Hoosier hospitality and American volunteerism.

Regarded as the “Olympics of the Violin,” each Competition generates significant national and international media coverage for the artists and the state. Hundreds of volunteers work tirelessly to make this event possible. Through the performances of its Laureates, the influence of the Competition continues for years afterward in cities of the world far from Indianapolis. These Laureates uphold the tradition of quality and excellence which has made the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world.

The Ensemble Music Society was formed in the winter of 1944 by a nucleus of civicminded music lovers. The group originally met in the Herron Art Museum on 16th Street (later becoming the Indianapolis Museum of Art). Guided by Leonard Strauss and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra founder Ferdinand Schaefer, they decided to form a chamber music society to bring a regular season of chamber music concerts to Indianapolis. They selected the name Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis (EMSI) and formed an organizational committee. The first concert was announced for April 1945 in the Indiana War Memorial Concert Hall.

EMSI remains an all-volunteer organization. Thousands of volunteer hours given annually by the board keep expenses down and ticket prices reasonable. Most concerts are presented at the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana Landmarks Center in downtown Indianapolis.

MISSION The mission of EMSI is to present a regular series of chamber music concerts with internationally-known touring and recording artists each season in Indianapolis.

Beyond their role as performers, often the ensembles are very generous and gifted teachers. Part of the mission includes promoting music education through the EMSI Chamber Music in Schools program. These guest ensembles visit schools throughout central Indiana, with lectures and hands-on demonstrations for students.

Artist Biographies Co-Artistic Director of Chamber Music Society since 2004, cellist David Finckel’s dynamic musical career has included performances on the world’s stages in the roles of recitalist, chamber artist, and orchestral soloist.

The first American student of Mstislav Rostropovich, he joined the Emerson String Quartet in 1979, and during 34 seasons garnered nine Grammy Awards and the Avery Fisher Prize. His quartet performances and recordings include quartet cycles of Mozart, ˇ Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, Brahms, Bartók, and Shostakovich, as well as collaborative masterpieces and commissioned works. In 1997, he and pianist Wu Han founded ArtistLed, the first internet-based, artist-controlled classical recording label. ArtistLed’s catalog of more than 20 releases includes the standard literature for cello and piano, plus works composed for the duo by George Tsontakis, Gabriela Lena Frank, Bruce Adolphe, Lera Auerbach, Edwin Finckel, Augusta Read Thomas, and Pierre Jalbert. In 2022, Music@Menlo, an innovative summer chamber music festival in Silicon Valley founded and directed by David and Wu Han, celebrated its 20th season. As a young student, David was winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s junior and senior divisions, resulting in two performances with the orchestra. Having taught extensively with the late Isaac Stern in America, Israel, and Japan, he is currently a professor at both The Juilliard School and Stony Brook University, and oversees both CMS’s Bowers Program and Music@Menlo’s Chamber Music Institute. David’s 100 online Cello Talks, lessons on cello technique, are viewed by an international audience of musicians. Along with Wu Han, he was the recipient of Musical America’s 2012 Musicians of the Year Award.

Taiwanese-American violinist Richard Lin continues to gain international prominence since his Gold Medal prize at the 2018 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

Following his June 2022 Carnegie Hall Stern Auditorium recital debut, New York Concert Review asserted, “Richard Lin. Remember the name.

For he has everything required to take the world by storm.” He has collaborated with numerous orchestras and performed at celebrated concert venues throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States. He is a laureate of the Sendai, Joseph Joachim, Singapore, and Michael Hill International violin competitions and has just joined the faculty of the National Taipei University of Education. His 2023–24 season includes appearances as Guest Concertmaster, soloist, and chamber artist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan and Japan. He will appear in recitals across the United States, including performances with CMS as a member of the Bowers Program. His soon-to-be released album with pianist Thomas Hoppe on the Azica label features his Carnegie Hall program with works by Vitali, Richard Strauss, John Corigliano and Frolov. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Taiwan, Lin graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, where he studied with Aaron Rosand and Lewis Kaplan, respectively.

Timothy Ridout, a former BBC New Generation Artist, Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship 2020 winner, and recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society 2023 Young Artist Award, is one of the most sought-after violists of his generation. The 2023–24 season sees him join the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Orchestre National du Capitole 10

de Toulouse, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra alongside the likes of Kazuki Yamada and Sir Simon Rattle. Further highlights include his return to America with Camerata Pacifica and his debut with Royal Northern Sinfonia. Recent seasons have included appearances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, hr-Sinfonieorchester, TonhalleOrchester Zürich, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Hamburger Symphoniker, Orchestre National de Lille, Camerata Salzburg, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestra. Across his engagements he has worked with conductors such as Sakari Oramo, Lionel Bringuier, Sylvain Cambreling, Nicholas Collon, and Sir András Schiff, and performed as far and wide as South America and Australia. In 2020 Ridout won Hamburger Symphoniker’s inaugural Sir Jeffrey Tate Prize and in 2021 he joined CMS’s Bowers Program. Born in London in 1995, Ridout studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence. He completed his master’s at the Kronberg Academy with Nobuko Imai in 2019 and, in 2018, took part in the Kronberg Academy’s Chamber Music Connects the World. He plays a viola by Peregrino di Zanetto, c. 1565–75, on loan from a generous patron of Beare’s International Violin Society.

Pianist Wu Han, recipient of Musical America’s Musician of the Year Award, enjoys a multi-faceted musical life that encompasses artistic direction, performing, and recording at the highest levels. CoArtistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2004 as well as Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Silicon Valley’s innovative chamber music festival Music@Menlo since 2002, she also serves as Artistic Advisor for Wolf Trap’s Chamber Music at the Barns series and Palm Beach’s Society of the Four Arts, 2023/2024 Laureate Series

and as Artistic Director for La Musica in Sarasota, Florida. Her recent concert activities have taken her from New York’s Lincoln Center stages to the most important concert halls in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In addition to countless performances of virtually the entire chamber repertoire, her concerto performances include appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of ArtistLed, classical music’s first artistdirected, internet-based recording label, which has released her performances of the staples of the cello-piano duo repertoire with cellist David Finckel. Her more than 80 releases on ArtistLed, CMS Live, and Music@Menlo LIVE include masterworks of the chamber repertoire with numerous distinguished musicians. Wu Han’s educational activities include overseeing CMS’s Bowers Program and the Chamber Music Institute at Music@Menlo. A recipient of the prestigious Andrew Wolf Award, she was mentored by some of the greatest pianists of our time, including Lilian Kallir, Rudolf Serkin, and Menahem Pressler. Married to cellist David Finckel since 1985, Wu Han divides her time between concert touring and residences in New York City and Westchester County.

Program Notes Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Trio in E-flat for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op. 1, No. 1 (1793) In 1792, as France convulsed in revolution and war broke out in Europe, Beethoven moved from his hometown of Bonn to study composition with Franz Joseph Haydn in Vienna. Mozart had died just eleven months before, and the tastemakers of the town were keeping their eyes open for the next big talent. Beethoven—with his wild looks, untamed personality, and unconventional, aggressive pianistic sound, paired with undeniable talent— was a top candidate. He had no trouble finding a series of patrons—even several at once. The competition for the bragging rights of facilitating the creation of exciting new works had become so fierce that many families went into tremendous (even ruinous) debt trying to outdo their neighbors.

Buoyed by this unabashed enthusiasm, within a handful of years Beethoven’s music was printed by no fewer than five of the music publishers in town.

Carl Czerny, who would become one of Beethoven’s most famous pupils, confirmed the composer “received all manner of support from our high aristocracy and enjoyed as much care and respect as ever fell to the lot of a young artist.”

Shortly after his arrival, Beethoven was invited by Prince Karl Lichnowsky and his wife to live with them in their home. Prince Lichnowsky patronized Beethoven for over a decade, and Beethoven became extremely close to the family. He considered Princess Christiane von Lichnowsky a “second mother” and dedicated works such as the Sonata in C minor, Op. 13 (“Pathétique”), the Sonata in A-flat, Op. 26, and the Symphony No. 2 to the Prince. However, over time Beethoven became increasingly agitated by the arrangement. Musicologist Maynard Solomon notes that it “troubled him to think that he was admired primarily for his talents rather than for his qualities as a person,” and that he once lamented in a letter to a friend, ”Am I then nothing more than a music maker for yourself or the others?” The sentiment wasn’t limited to the Lichnowskys. It seems Beethoven felt similarly toward more than one of his patrons. The attention was a double-edged sword.

Beethoven wrote the set of three piano trios, published as Op. 1, for Lichnowsky during the halcyon days of their relationship, to be performed at a home salon (various accounts exist, but Haydn may have been in attendance). Divided into four movements, the opening sparkles with elegant Viennese classism, but is tinged with the unmistakably muscular quality of 2023/2024 Laureate Series

Beethoven. This is balanced by the second movement, in which his masterful writing of achingly beautiful melodies is on full display. The spotlight is particularly given to the piano—not accidentally, as it is the part Beethoven himself played at the premiere. In the rollicking third movement we already hear a foreshadowing of the kind of élan infused in his later scherzos, like that of the Symphony No. 7, while the finale displays the composer’s spirit of playful virtuosity. Listen for the sneaky return of the first movement’s opening arpeggio motive in the very last measures of the work.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) Sonata in D minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 40 (1934) In January 1934, Dmitri Shostakovich premiered his second opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. It was received with acclaim and continued a successful run for two years. By this time, the composer had been on an upward trajectory since the premiere of his First Symphony nearly a decade earlier, in 1926. A work of his teenage years, the symphony catapulted Shostakovich onto the international stage, earning him attention from conductors such as Toscanini and Stokowski, and composers as diverse as Darius Milhaud and Alban Berg. Building on this cornerstone, the remainder of his twenties saw a flurry of productivity, including reaching the finals of the first Chopin Piano Competition, and the creation of many works that have endured in popularity, including two more symphonies, his first opera (The Nose), the First Piano Concerto, and the 24 Preludes for Piano.

The Cello Sonata was one of the first works Shostakovich completed after Lady Macbeth, and also represents his first mature foray into chamber music.

It was commissioned by Viktor Kubatsky, principal cellist of the Bolshoi Theater, and its inception collided with a turbulent period in the composer’s domestic life: the temporary separation from his wife, Nina, following an affair he pursued with a young translator. The marriage, mutually agreed to be open, was emotionally complex, marred by some reluctance, and further complicated by a desire for children that hung in the balance when Nina was diagnosed with a kidney disease that doctors believed could be life-threatening in childbirth. After she underwent a successful treatment and became pregnant, Shostakovich wrote to a friend, “There is to be no more talk of my divorce from Nina.” But the drama was just beginning. Two years later, in January 1936, Shostakovich was giving a performance of the Cello Sonata while simultaneously finding himself the direct target of public political intimidation. An unsigned article was published in the newspaper Pravda condemning Lady Macbeth as “Muddle Instead of Music,” just days

after Stalin had attended a performance. A second disapproving article, this time singling out one of his ballet scores, ran less than a month later.

Performances of Shostakovich’s works were canceled, and he fell into an abyss of fear as Stalin’s purges raged around him.

Ironically, Shostakovich would be censured from that moment for “formalist” tendencies (a government catch-all for anything they deemed outside of the Socialist-Realism ideal), while his Cello Sonata is almost staunchly traditionalist in its structure. Opening with an elegant melody in the cello, the expansive beauty of the first movement is by turns pensive, laced with gloom, and sweetly wistful. This emotional ambiguity is enhanced by the vagueness of the movement’s tonal centers. This is all hung on a scaffolding of ClassicalRomantic sonata form (A–B–A), but modified with unique features such as the return of the A-section material strikingly changed to a slower tempo.

The second movement is in perpetual motion, powered by a vigorous triple meter that churns with an array of short, repeated patterns. In stark contrast, the third-movement Largo is lugubrious yet beautifully expressive. Everything is pitched down into the very low register of each instrument, communicating a palpable sense of oppression, and the cello is the definitive focal point.

The final movement is a customary rondo (A–B–A–C–A) conclusion for a sonata, but rendered as a tour de force of virtuosity and novelty where breathtakingly rapid finger work is required of both players and new themes combine without transition. Covering the entire folk-music inspired finale is a gloss of sardonic humor—an attribute that would become a hallmark of Shostakovich’s works for years to come.

ˇ Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) Quartet in E-flat for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op. 87 (1889) A profoundly impactful period in Antonín Dvorák’s life was marked by ˇ the enthusiastic reception of his works by orchestras and audiences in England. Everything had changed for the Czech composer when Johannes Brahms extended his support in 1877, encouraging his own publisher, Fritz Simrock, to take on Dvorák ˇ as a new talent. Virtually overnight he went from a church organist and regionally popular composer to a burgeoning European celebrity. However, the endorsement could not spare him from the political climate of increasing anti-Czech sentiment in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, most vividly evidenced by the Vienna Philharmonic’s extended delay premiering his Symphony No. 6, which ultimately ended with a first performance in Prague instead.

Amid this storm, Dvorák ˇ was invited to England in 1884 for the first of what would become multiple tours over the course of 12 years. His optimism after such a warm reception leaps off the page in one of his letters: “From all I have gained the conviction that a new, and with God’s will happier, period is now beginning here for me in England.” This turn of events paved the way for his work to spread throughout the continent and to the United States, where he would spend three years as director of the new National Conservatory of Music in New York. It also provided him with true financial security for the first time, allowing him to purchase a summer home in the country where he could write, and giving him leverage to demand better pay from Simrock now that there was competition for publishing rights.

In 1889, now at a new height in his career, Dvorák ˇ completed the Quartet, Op. 87, which fulfilled a request from Simrock for a new piano quartet. It was written quickly, between July 10 and August 19, just a few weeks after ˇ was awarded one of the highest orders of merit, the Austrian Order Dvorák of the Iron Crown. The buoyant feelings he surely felt as this transformative decade neared its end resonate throughout the quartet, which is one of his most delightful works. Opening the piece is a full-throated statement of the primary theme by the strings in unison, followed by a call-and-response passage with the piano. Shifting into G major, Dvorák ˇ introduces the sweetly lyrical second theme on the viola—a personal touch as this was his instrument during the years he worked as a performer before turning to composition.

Throughout the movement the intensity grows until it is bursting with nearly symphonic energy as Dvorák ˇ brilliantly transforms the themes.

The expansive second movement is rhapsodic in its treatment of multiple themes and moods through a slew of key changes. The first theme is a melancholy melody delivered by the cello, accompanied by sparse pizzicato (plucked) chords and harp-like arpeggiation. The second, equally lyrical theme is picked up by the violin before a third chordal theme is introduced by the piano. A tumbling cascade of chromatic octaves introduces a passionately strident fourth theme that dovetails into a fifth theme, again carried by the piano, accompanied by sighs in the strings.

For the third movement, Dvorák ˇ takes a cue from the Classical minuet-andtrio structure, but inserts evocations of traditional folk dances into the ternary (ABA) form. Closing the work is a high-spirited finale in the same folkmusic vein. Beginning unexpectedly in E-flat minor, the movement displays Dvorák’s endless capacity for melody all the way to the end before pivoting ˇ to conclude in the home key.

Born in New York City, Charlap’s father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap, whose credits include Peter Pan, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart, who appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Perry Como shows. This exposure to multiple genres may be why DownBeat magazine writes of Charlap, “his repertoire is a special bonus.”
