Feel-Good Answers

1. More is better

People who have one or more close friendships are happier. Sharing your heart (self-disclosure) plays a major role in the relief of stress and depression.

2. Be kind

People who care about others in a selfless manner seem to be happier and have better health. This is especially true for older individuals.

3. Move your body

Research shows exercise improves well-being and decreases depression and anxiety. Exercise has a positive impact on mood, energy levels and memory.

4. Know thyself

Some of the happiest people are those who know their strengths and use them for something more than personal gain.

5. Find your flow

When we find activities interesting and somewhat challenging, we experience a joyful state called “flow.” That’s when we lose ourselves in a hobby or endeavor and time escapes us.

6. Make peace with the past, have hope for the future and relish the present

Studies show framing experiences in an optimistic manner helps people live longer, healthier and happier lives. When we deal with difficulties, optimism gives us strength to find solutions and imagine better outcomes.

7. Find meaning

Engaging in practices that take us out of self and connect us to a greater purpose is seen as the path to lasting fulfillment in life. For many people, that means a religious or spiritual practice. For others, it might be family or work. Creating “sacred moments” in life – through activities like prayer, meditation, journaling, artwork, volunteering or nature walks – helps people gain perspective, peace and gratitude.
