Gypsy Rose Run
Mmmm ‘shall we, shall we not’ was the big question at 8am on a showery Sunday morning, but the weather forecast was for morning showers becoming fine. That’s good enough for me so after getting the old girl (not the 54) out of the sack we headed off to the meeting place in Tamahere. Believe it or not we were first to arrive (Lorrie, still in sleep mode – didn’t realise we were early leaving home). It wasn’t long before our organiser arrived – no front seat navigator though – only grandson Fergus (6 yrs old) in rear seat. (Teach ‘em young nowdays). By departure time we had a few more attendees so off we go, just in time to catch another shower on the new freeway. How good is this travelling on SH1 – all nice and smooth, until we reach the old section where potholes had to be avoided. Once we reached Hampton Downs Race Track – hello, the WVVCC wind sails were already in place waiting for us. Thanks to Mrs Secretary. It was straight into the Café (to get away from the cold wind and another threatening shower). Bit of a wait but it didn’t matter - the coffee was hot and savoury scones very tasty. By the time a coffee was had it was then time to check out the various display of cars the venue is known for:‘Caffeine and Gasoline Gathering’. Running at the same time was a track day and vehicles on the skid pad. Young Fergus was very interested in the cars on the track and was rather mesmerised by cars on the skid pad. This is a very good example of what our young drivers should have to do training-wise in the early stages of their driving. But maybe not quite push it as hard as these guys were. Good entertainment I must say. After watching quite a few participants (including a nice MKII Cortina) doing the 5 laps of the race track it was then time to make our way home on this well over due freeway. It was great to have new members join us for the run, Allen Godfrey (1926 Clyno) and Phil & Monique Hans (1970 MGB Roadster).
