Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington

Club Captain’s Report – March 2020 Due to other commitments, Pam and I were unable to attend the last two Club events, travelling to Gisborne with the Model T Club and attending the Three Rivers Rally put on by the Gisborne Branch of the VCC.

The “Clubs Open” went as planned, but unfortunately, the public was kept away due to a lack of support from our community Newspaper. Neil put a considerable effort into contacting the local media, but they choose not to support us.

I want to thank all members that brought their cars along, and some of you came along with more than one. Thank you.

What do we do next year? If you have idea’s for next year’s open day, talk to a committee member, and I am sure we will come up with a plan, whether it be at the Clubrooms or Downtown.

Word on the street tells me all went to plan, great turn out for the Club’s

Summer BBQ night. Thanks to those that cooked and cleaned up.

Due to the weather being beyond our control, The Great Lake Club Picnic Day, combined with the Taupo VCC on Sunday the 16th of February ended up in the Clubrooms. The only wet day we have had for weeks. Again thanks to all involved that made this a great day out.

Looking forward to March.

Taupo VCC annual Rally 13/14th March, have you got your entries in yet. Time running out and we need a few more. You may have to drop into Heather or Maureen to make the deadline.

As the guy said who started Contiki Tours, there’s only one seat left!!., so get in quick.

Pam and I have stepped back this year and will be competing in the Rally. This will be our first rally since we have been involved with Taupo VCC. We are looking forward to being a competitive car. Watch this space.

On the 18th of March we are planning a get together at the Clubrooms to discuss all things relating to Club issues. If you feel strongly about something, bring it along to discuss e.g., How do we improve on getting “Joe Public” to our open day.

Club to provide tea/ coffee and biscuits.

Hospice Morning Tea and Run on the 24th of March. (see notice next page)

Keep the 19th of April free for our annual Picnic Lunch Run out to somewhere special, have you any ideas where to go.

On Saturday the 8th of February, Pam and I set off in our Model A for our first

night in Matangi to join up with the Model T Club and travel together to Gisborne.

• Day 1 - On Sunday, we drove over to Morrinsville to meet up with 14 Model T’s and 4 Model A’s and continued onto Whakatane for our overnight stay. • Day 2 - Whakatane to Hicks Bays for our overnight stay. • Day 3 - Hicks Bay to Gisborne. • Day 4, 5 & 6 - Taking part in the Model T Rally organized by the local Model T member Mark Dunn. Mark set some very interesting runs to places like the Eastwood Hill Arboretum, Rere Falls, and Rockside. Visting a large carved Meeting House and welcomed by the pupils of Nukaka School and lunch at the Rocket Cafe at Mahia Penninsula, but couldn’t see the Rocket Launch Site. Visting Tolaga Bay Wharf and seeing a “Horse Whisperer” in action. • Day 7 - Three Rivers Rally touring through their hinterland... An interesting Rally with easy to follow instructions. First, an instruction, a diagram of the intersection, and then a photo of the intersection.

Considering Gisborne has large flat areas growing a variety of crops, we still had plenty of hills to climb and descend and over 20 miles of metal roads. Lunch stop at the Tahunga Golf Club and back to Gisborne to take part in a Steam Train ride.

Day 8 & 9 It was time to say our goodbyes and head back to Whakatane for a night. Pam and I broke ranks at Whakatane and headed back to Taupo via Galatea and Murupara.

It was a great tour, even though we had some long, very hot days (and of course some grumpy people at times), touring our beautiful countryside, places we hadn’t been to or seen before

Cheers, Tony
