What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

A new year is here, and we are more excited than ever about the vintage camper trailer hobby! Not long ago someone asked me, “How long will you be able to maintain your enthusiasm about the hobby?” At the time, I thought it was a legitimate question. I don’t think you could do what we do in the hobby if you were not immersed in it. Fortunately, the hobby has taken on so many directions for us we won’t be getting bored with it anytime soon. This winter we have been restoring a couple of trailers that we will be showing this year. While we do as much of our own restorations as possible, we do rely on friends and other craftsman for help. I have learned that there are more qualified professionals that will save me time and do a better job than I could myself for some things. We have relied on John Green, Tim and Linda Brown and Harps RV to keep our 1955 Spartan Mid-Century Mobile Museum on track. The 28’ Spartan will be making its debut in February at the Exposure Shows in Oregon. www.exposureshows.com The Spartan project started as a gutted shell that Justin and Anna had at Flyte Camp. The trailer had been abandoned by the previous owner, but was exactly what we were looking for. The fact that it was completely gutted meant we could do whatever we wanted! Ultimately, we decided that what we really wanted was to build was a 1955 Spartan with essentially the same layout that it came with originally! Although gutted to the studs, most of the contents like the cabinets and trim were inside of the trailer. We re-wired the trailer (for 12v and 110v), insulated everything with foam core and installed a new birch ceiling and wall panels. We re-purposed the originally cabinetry and trim (leaving some patina) to give the trailer a “vintage feel”. The trailer will be our camper, office and museum as we travel to rallies and other events. We used new materials in the build to make it comfortable. Wilsonart Laminates, Forbo Marmolium Flooring, Dometic Air Conditioning and a Parallax Power Supply. The final touch will be blinds from www.blinds.com. We hope to see you at an event so you can see our new build. The trailer will have hundreds of pieces of vintage camping gear on board and be a fun look-back at the vintage artifacts that were used during the mid-century. We will feature photos of the finished trailer in the next issue of the VCT Magazine. We have rescued a couple of more barn fresh Masonite trailers that we hope to clean-up and share soon. This summer, we will be announcing a special, one-of-a-kind trailer that is a part of trailering history. It is our next project and we need to get it done to stay on schedule. Participating in so many aspects of the hobby we don’t have time to get burned out! See you at a Trailerfest, Boot Camp or another rally! www.midcenturymobile.com

Artistic Airstreams is a custom trailer shop in the Bay Area of Northern California. Owner, Scotty Williams has been building trailers for the last decade specializing in Airstreams. He, along with his right hand man, Josh Hicks, have spent the last eight months and over 500 man hours redesigning and rebuilding this Airstream. No corner has gone untouched. Artistic Airstream fabricated all new bright aluminum interior wall panels and custom made Peruvian Walnut Hi Luster cabinetry throughout the trailer. They even created butcher block countertops for both the bathroom and bedroom. This high end rebuild sports an enlarged dinette area as well as a custom made foot and head board for its Queen sized bed. Entertainment needs are satisfied with a convenient theatre quality multi-zone audio/video system with 4k projection; 53 drop down screen in the main room, 30 smart bedroom tv, surround sound with Bluetooth connectivity, exterior speaker hook ups and self-searching satellite tv, and Xbox-1. All LED interior lighting, with dimmer switches were installed for low power consumption, then USB charging wall outlets were installed throughout the trailer for all the modern accessories. All modern appliances, including a Dickinson Mediterranean marine grade stainless steel stove/oven, and Baldini Low profile Hood vent. Suburban on demand water heater and furnace. Dometic Low profile 13,500 btu Penguin Air Conditioner and a Dometic DM2652, 6 cubic foot double door refrigerator. To complement the solar system there is a Magnum 4000 watt Hybrid inverter system with 4 Fullriver DC400, 6volt AGM batteries each with a capacity of 415 amp/hr. The exterior of the trailer shines with its mirror polished aluminum. To add a little contrast, the wheels were powder coated light blue. This color was also used as an accent on the body trim and AIRSTREAM lettering on the interior end caps. They had the windows mirror tinted to match the polished shell in order to add a little day time privacy. Artistic Airstream also installed aluminum wrapped patio and bedroom window awnings to keep that morning and afternoon glare down. Using all the empty roof space, they were able to install 6, flexible solar panels that contour to the shape of the roof, proving an 800+ watt solar charging system allowing for unlimited off grid power as long the sun is still rising in the mornings.

The Future of Keeping Vintage Trailers and Their History, Alive Brian and I (Brooke) are both in our early 20’s and have given up just about everything to start our own business restoring vintage trailers. Being much younger than most vintage trailerites and restorers we like to think that we are “the future of keeping vintage trailers and their history alive. Though, like many of you know, it is not easy to keep and restore our vintage trailers completely original. Many of our clients request special alterations and renovations to

create a more functional trailer for their life style. Brian and I decided to take notice of the life style of other vintage trailerites when we were enjoying a beautiful evening at the Pismo South Rally earlier this year. What we noticed was most of the attendees were older couples, and many of them liked to drink, enjoy hanging out and having a good time. Not only that, but, like us, they have dogs. (We bring our dog Axel with us camping all the time). We know, like other dog Continued on Page 17 Brian and Brooke, pictured below, restored the trailers through page 17

bitten by the

Wanderlust Bug Like so many others in their mid-twenties, I was bitten (hard) by the wanderlust bug. Millennials get a bad rap, but most of us are truly just trying to find where we belong. And for many, that’s not just one location, but an overarching need to experience as much of the world as possible. I’ve always loved to travel, and recently found myself drawn to life on the road, exploring my own backyard. Arizona has been home my whole life, and its diversity makes it the perfect place to scratch the exploring itch. From vast desert landscapes in southern Arizona to the mountainous terrains up north, there’s not much that my beautiful state is lacking, and I need to see it all. While I’m not ready to make the jump to full-time trailer living, having my own little house on wheels to travel in seemed like just the ticket to get me past my “quarter life crisis.” I have a soft spot in my heart for all things old – whenever

resembled a trailer after 64 years, many of which were spent sitting abandoned, prey to the elements. And yet, she stood! Originally, I had set my sights on finding the perfect already-restored trailer. After endless hours of research, scrolling Craigslist, and a few meetings with “restorers”, I quickly realized that a well-restored vintage trailer is harder to come by than I would have ever imagined. And then I stumbled upon American Travelers Restorations’ website. I was looking at a Shasta that was already done, but after exchanging ideas and information with owner Brooke Bickler, she sent me photos of the Fleetwood. Even in its decrepit state I was immediately intrigued. I drove to California to meet them and see the Fleetwood in person, and I knew right away that I had found my trailer and the perfect team to restore it. They were so helpful the entire time, from choosing custom design elements, explaining the rebuilding process, and constantly keeping me updated along the way. They even included things I never would have dreamed – like the original iron grates on the vents, and a pet feeding station for my two furry travel companions. The result was my dream trailer, rebuilt with modern touches and, most importantly, safe to hit the road.

possible, you can find me getting lost in an antique store, or combing through rusty items at a vintage market. Most of my favorite furniture and jewelry pieces are family handme-downs, and I’m currently renovating a 1974 home (because every trailer needs a good parking spot). When I first started looking for a travel trailer, there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to go old school, despite 14

all the negative options I heard. Why spend money on something old when you can get something brand new? Well, there’s a reason for the saying, “They just don’t build them like that anymore!” I knew that was true the second I laid eyes on my 1953 Fleetwood. Don’t get me wrong – it was an absolute hunk of junk at the time, but I also remember thinking that it was a miracle that it even

Since June, my little “canned ham” has driven the Pacific Coast Highway, sat underneath the towering California redwood trees, gone off-road in the mountains of the Mogollon Rim (that was a nailbiter!), and camped amidst the beautiful red rocks of Sedona. One of my favorite campgrounds, where these

photographs were taken, is Lost Dutchman State Park, about an hour east of Phoenix. It’s the perfect quick weekend destination from the city and has incredible views of both mountains and the desert. In the spring, the area fills with wildflowers, so I will definitely be back for that! My long-term goal is to eventually take a few weeks (or even months!) to explore some of the most amazing areas that the West has to offer, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Banff, Zion, etc., just to name a few! But for now, the weekend trips and occasional weeklong vacation will have to do. Sometimes, I’m content just visiting the camper in the parking lot, decorating and imagining all the places we’ll go. The trailer is fondly named after one of my favorite musical artists (and because I love a good play on words), Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. Like many others my age, I took to social media to document my travels and experiences in a vintage camper, and Instagram has been a great way to record memories of traveling in the trailer (both good and bad!). I also started a blog to write about travel, favorite camping hacks, where to go, and lessons I’ve learned along the way. It has not been an easy journey for someone who had absolutely no experience with trailers before I started, but has by far been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It can be tough to have your life completely figured out by this age, but when I pull up a folding chair with a cup of coffee and look out on my destination, I know that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

TREE HOUSE Tawna is an earth loving hippy. So she gave us the fun challenge of creating an organic and natural “trailer tree house” out of her 1973 Wilderness. She wanted natural woods with no plastic inside. To minimize any waist and to use the bare minimum of anything toxic. We stripped the ugly fake wood wallpaper off down to natural raw wood by using a heat gun, a scraper, and a sander. I created the wood stains by using nontoxic organic materials and minerals, like rusty water, tea, coffee grounds and vinegar. We reclaimed old fencing from a horse ranch to create the chevron pattern wall and used some inside the bathroom. Tawna loves wild flowers so we surprised her by using wild lilac branches to frame around all the cabinet doors. Throughout the restoration, we made sure to respect her organic and natural lifestyle by cleaning everything with natural non toxic cleaners. Brian and I love that our clients become our friends, so we really do our best to go above and beyond for them and go the extra step to truly get to know them. 16

lovers, that our dogs are our family. So why not create a trailer that accommodates the “typical” trailerite lifestyle?

BEFORE

We had recently purchased a 1954 Kenskill and knew it would be the perfect candidate for the ideas we had. Only a few cabinets and section of the walls were salvageable, other than that it was completely rebuilt. We added new appliances and a wine cooler and of course a margarita mixer to go along with the “good time/drinking” theme. We eliminated the front dinette and built an L shaped bar. Under the bar we modified one of the original dinette seats into a dog bunk. We feel your dog should have its own special place. This is especially true in a smaller space where you often have to step over them. The 1954 Kenskill went to a perfect home, a couple who is using it as a guest room and a fun place to entertain friends with drinks and playing the guitar. They are also fellow animal lovers.

CAMPER CHEF Bart gives the primitive Belgian dish, with its deep roots in Belgian farming, an all American touch. The potato was brought to Southern Europe as a very nutritious tuber in 1536 by the Spanish Conquistadors, more specifically by a certain Diego de Amalya, from South America (Chile or Peru). Here it was successfully grown and consumed. Soon thereafter, the Netherlands (later the Netherlands and Belgium) became familiar with this basic but versatile food. Now, almost five centuries later, Bart Cops, better known as the ‘Camper Chef' introduces a very appreciated end product of the ancient potato, Stoemp. Bart is unleashing his very own "Stoemp Collection" in the United States and for the first time, right here in Las Vegas. The basic and versatile potato is making its way back into the hearts of Americans but this time with a Belgian flair and via a little thing we all love called‌camping!

Bart Cops, 43 is here out of Belgium, Europe. Where in his professional life is CEO of his own Green Energy companies. He immigrated from Belgium to Southern Nevada a little over five years ago. It is here he found his love for being a hobby chef. Bart has gained fame by cooking Stoemp related dishes not only for his local Farmer’s Market companions but also his family, friends and those less fortunate than he. Bart swears by the basic honest kitchen and presents himself as an autodidact cook with amazing skills. Stoemp is his signature dish, which was highlighted and upgraded in Belgium by Bart’s dear friend and number one mentor,

20

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Chef Albert Verdeyen. Chef Albert is the famous Brussels TV chef who wrote several cookbooks about the beloved and versatile meal (co written by Marc Vansataen). Albert’s personality and skills showed Bart the way to open doors in the United States. The two remain close comrades and Bart and Albert are about to publish their first cookbook together! This fun and vibrant cookbook will be filled to the brim with 30 amazing Stoemp recipes. Camper Chef and Chef Albert (Brussels Man of the Year in 2011) will show us how we too can make Stoemp. It will feature many various ways to enrich the fun meal with a variety of additions and ingredients such as herbs, vegetables, meats or like Bart’s girlfriend would prefer… to keep it vegan.

Bart started experimenting in Nevada, his new home, first inside his family kitchen and then in the kitchen of his vintage camper trailer all while traveling with his beloved family. He gave the primitive Belgian dish, with its deep roots in Belgian farming, an all American touch. Thus, making it his very own version of the basic, yet versatile meal straight from his heritage, "Camper Chef Stoemp". THE CULINARY ROOTS OF THE CAMPER CHEF Camper Chef, Bart Cops, grew up in the northeastern part of Belgium, the rural Flemish province of Limburg, which is squeezed in at the bordering triangle between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Until the beginning of last century, the province of Limburg was a very poor region without industrial activity and scarcely populated by poor farmers with sheep, goats, chickens and sometimes you would find a cow. The children-rich families lived from their meager farmlands and life was beautiful, even though it was simple. Here the potato was the staple food. A very popular key ingredient that graced fame on every household table, like pasta was to Italy.

As a child, Bart experienced several exotic kitchens of the migrant families in his neighborhood in West Limburg. He could be found in his grandmothers kitchen, interested in how she cooked, what she cooked, which ingredients she mixed and how she seasoned it. Cooking is most definitely deep in the family genes.

Bart's youth was extra seasoned by the culinary influences of his own family. Papa Luc was born and raised in a typical Flemish farming family. His Grandma, who lived to be 99, mainly prepared authentic Flemish and Limburgian dishes with local grown and sourced ingredients from her own garden. She would be found picking up ingredients from small farmers in the neighborhood. This characteristic lives on with Bart. Dishes with home-grown potatoes appeared on the table almost daily, along side fresh vegetable soups. Bart’s Aunt Jeanne, who lived to be 98, resided in a farm next to Bart’s childhood home. Here she ran a farm with several goats and lots of other small animals like chicken, ducks and even a couple cows. She literally harvested all of her own

Basic STOEMP Recipe: This basic mashed potato recipe will be used in every Stoemp recipe and serves 4 people. You could call this ingredient the mise en place for every Stoemp. The magic of Stoemp is that you add your vegetables AFTER your mashed potatoes are ready. You will cook your vegetables (pot, olive oil, and season only with pepper and salt at the end).

You Will Need: • • • • •

35 ounces of Potatoes (Golden Idaho Potatoes) Pinch of Salt Large Pot Water Stoemper (Potato Masher)

Get To Work:

1. Peel your potatoes one by one and cut them up in small pieces (1x1inch) 2. Rinse them off 2-3 times to make sure you get rid of the starch 3. Cold water in your pot and a pinch of salt. 4. Add your potatoes to the water 5. Turn burner to high, bring to a boil (about 20 min) 6. Use a fork to pinch in your potatoes. If you feel no resistance than they are ready for the next step. 7. Take a colander, throw your potatoes and get rid of the water 8. Put them back in your pot (don‘t burn your hands!) 9. Take your “stoemper” or a “passe-vitte” and mash them until they are fluffy. Don‘t over mash them. They should be some what creamy with chunks of the potatoes. Quick, easy and done! 10. You got the best taste out of a simple cooked potato. Less is more. 11. Seasoning and flavors will be added later on in the recipe through your vegetables, meat, seafood… 12. You can put the left overs in small jars and keep them refrigerated. Perfect base when you come home after a long day in the field. 13. Put the Stoemp to the side and move on to your creation.

Brussels Stoemp-Dog:

My favorite camp stoemp dog on a cold winter evening in front of your camper or at your house.

You Will Need:

• Bun (prefer French baguettes because they are crunchy on the outside). • Mashed potatoes base. • Brussel sprouts two handfuls. • Mushrooms one handful. • White onions half onion (cook till golden brown in olive oil). • 4 Bratwursts or 4 Vegan Sausages (cook in olive oil, no seasoning needed).

Get To Work:

1. Sauté your veggies, with this recipe we chose Brussel sprouts. Sauté with olive oil, don’t over cook. This will take about 5 minutes. Then dash with salt and pepper at the end. 2. Cut your baguette in half. 3. First put some sauce in it on both sides (Dijon mustard, mayo or ketchup). 4. Add your bratwürst or your vegan sausage. 5. Add your stoemp. 6. Finish it with fresh parsley, drip some olive oil on the side and pepper all over your plate to make it look killer!

ingredients straight out of her exquisite farmhouse. From the farm in her backyard to her kitchen, she recycled her leftovers back into her garden and fed her cattle with organic food. Aunt Jeanne, like Grandma Cops, baked her own bread daily, and baked her pies herself. She slaughtered her own animals and processed all of her own garden products. Papa Luc became a well know journalist and an author. He was well traveled and wrote many articles with broad topics including culinary. Bart’s Mother, Nelly, had roots in Hungary and southern Europe. She prepared delicious typical Hungarian and dishes with signature recipes like goulash and stuffed peppers. Nelly was a specialist at Italian dishes as well. Her signature dish is her pasta bolognese, Bart to this day still cooks it exactly like she taught him a little over 30 years ago. Nelly also had some serious gypsy blood in her veins, hence why the same travel bug is found in Bart’s veins. Vintage campers and traveling is a natural thing for Bart and his own family. At age 14, Bart started to work at a local bakery and gathered a lot of experience in baking bread, pastries, croissants and several deserts. Every available hour he had he was found working in the bakery, literally day and night. Not only making a little bit of money but also perfecting his skills. Bart is in the process of bringing out 3 cookbooks, his own online monthly Camper Chef magazine and production of his first TV show in Europe. Which will be recorded in the Winter of 2017-2018. Bart is connected to Serving Our Kids Foundation. They feed thousands of children in Southern Nevada. He is in the process of creating simple recipes to feed the children and their families, one meal a day for every child in need. He also supports Create A Change Now, a Non-Profit out of Las Vegas, NV. They build gardens in schools. 22 so far. Bart will teach children how to plant, harvest and cook plant based meals. Stoemp, his signature dish, will be used to teach children and families how to eat healthy. Obesity is a huge problem and needs to be addressed now. Bart is now in his hometown of Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here he raises his 3 children Beau, Lou and Neal. Bart is most recently living out his "American Dream" with his girlfriend Mindy, a Mother of two, Olivia and Massimo. Having this large family has brought his dream into reality. He loves to cook for his “Tribe" as he likes to call them and enjoys the moments at the table with all 7 of them, talking about life, working out and future goals. Bart bought the 1983 Avion in 2015. It had been sitting completely neglected for 16 years in a parking lot in Boulder City, NV. It had 3 exploded tires, the keys where lost and Bart had to drill the lock to get in. Upon opening the door his whole world fell apart, it was a trash can. It was dirty, smelly and extremely neglected. The previous owner lived in it with dogs and cats and smoked. It was obvious it would be a 100% restoration project. It sleeps 5 as Bart added a bunkbed on the left hand side. Renovating this Avion was an experience he will never forget. Bart and his tribe are proud of their “Spaceship”.

Rallies don’t always have a theme, but when they do, they are so much fun! One theme that is sure to always draw lots of attention and laughs is Halloween! There are so many activities you can do, from pumpkin carving to telling spooky stories around a campfire. One of the great Halloween rallies is the Halloween Vintage Trailer Mash hosted by Joe & Lisa Messina. This year forty trailers participated in the fourth annual bash in Ocean Mesa, CA. There are lots of things going on to guarantee a fun packed and festive weekend: a movie night watching Munster Go Home, a pumpkin carving contest Saturday afternoon, trailer trick-or-treating at sundown and a Halloween poolside costume party with a potluck tri-tip dinner grilled

Pete must be forgiven for not having completed the restoration yet, because he’s the rally host for the Gathering Of The Times Vintage Trailer Rally and is continually doing preparation work for this event, which is growing into one of the east coast’s largest rallies. The Silver Dome is, however, currently camp-ready. 28

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

While doing a teardown of the Silver Dome’s interior, Pete found an interesting piece of the trailer’s past. Behind the original refrigerator was a child’s drawing of an airplane with the TWA logo (Trans World Airlines for those who don’t remember this once grand air carrier) written on it, as well as the child’s first and last name. Pete went on Facebook and contacted about two dozen people with the same name who lived in the New England area. In his message, he made reference to the hand-drawn airplane picture he’d discovered behind the Silver Dome’s refrigerator. A woman responded, writing that she drew the picture when she was a child. The Silver Dome had been her mother’s trailer, and her mother

Andrea came to the rally towing her workin-progress, a 1950 Liberty Coach she purchased in mid2017. If she does as good a job restoring this Liberty Coach as she did on the Prairie Schooner, she’ll be bringing a heck-of-anice trailer to future rallies.

had bought it from the original owner. Fantastic detective work, Pete! That drawing is now a treasured piece of the Silver Dome’s history. In addition to Pete’s breadloaf, there was a 1947 Prairie Schooner owned by Nathan and Deb Gaddis of Chattanooga, TN. However, it was the previous owner who told them it was a 1947 model when they purchased it in early-2017 without any paperwork. According to Deb, she said that well-known vintage trailer historian Tim Heintz, (who was at the rally), thinks it’s a 1949 model. That being noted, this Prairie Schooner is no longer a travel trailer. Instead, it’s a mobile clothing

boutique. The interior was already half-gutted when Nathan and Deb bought it, so they tore out the rest, then transformed it into a clothing store for Deb. During the rally, they had the exterior and interior decorated like a haunted house for Halloween. (Photos on page 31) A fully-restored 1947 Prairie Schooner owned by Lea Campbell of Warm Springs, VA was at the rally. Lea purchased the trailer in 2016 from Andrea Danforth, the woman who did the frame-up restoration. Lea had previously owned a vintage Airstream. This was Lea’s first long-distance trip with the Prairie Schooner since it was returned to ‘like new’ condition. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

There were other breadloaf trailers at the 2017 Gathering Of The Times Vintage Trailer Rally, but not enough time to interview all the owners (due to more than 140 trailers attending the event). All this writing about breadloaf trailers has made me hungry, so I’m going to make a sandwich.

Truck Camper

Restorations:

Homebuilt

vs Avion

1967 Avion truck camper owned by Darryl and Suzie Odom of Parrish, AL mounted on a 1968 Ford Ranger Pickup. Beautifully-restored interior of the Odom’s Avion truck camper.

Story and Photographs by Richard Cook Truck campers don’t attract the most attention at vintage trailer rallies, but a couple of sparkling examples at the 2017 Gathering Of The Times in Pine Mountain, GA defined the true meaning of the word gathering, with crowds of trailerites gathering around to admire the workmanship of Doug Russell of Loganville, GA and Darryl Odom of Parrish, AL. Three years ago, Doug did a frame-up restoration on the Haney Hilton truck camper his grandfather, Winfred Haney, built in 1964 using materials purchased at a local hardware store and lumber yard. This highly-polished homebuilt (14 ft) has a welded aluminum box frame covered with corrugated aluminum. Interior walls are sheeted with knotty pine paneling. The air-conditioned interior has a refrigerator/ freezer in the back, as well as cabinetry on both sides built from knotty pine and corrugated aluminum. Ordinary rain gutters cleverly hide lighting fixtures and electrical outlets. A full-size aluminum door provides access into and out of the Haney Hilton. On the manufactured end of the restoration spectrum, Darryl and his wife, Suzie, turned their 1967 Avion truck camper (10 ft) into a work of art containing all the comforts of home in such a tiny package. Prior to purchasing this gem, it was used as a fishing shack. This highly-polished Avion is mounted on a 1968 Ford Ranger Pickup painted to match the truck camper’s interior.

TEARDROP TOURISTS Last September Pat and I took our teardrop to the Northern Utah Tin Can Tourist rally for the second time in as many years and enjoyed both events. Orbie Mungall puts on a well-organized rally, which makes us want to find other such events next year. Our daughter, “Duckie Dawn Drake (a name that she inherited in high school) also joined us for the open house on Saturday. We have other vintage trailers, which needs attention but several years ago we became obsessed with teardrops when we found one in a horse pasture mired in ice. It had been used as a

chicken coop and more recently to store animal feed but was not in as bad of shape as you might imagine. We proceeded to chip the ice away and put some wheels under it and pulled it out to dry land and loaded it on a car trailer. We found through some local research that it was made by the Kit Manufacturing Company and was sold as a kit in 1945 and spent most if its life in Moab, Utah. We scraped several layers of paint, remove an ugly boat carrier from the top, installed cedar paneling to the cabin and galley and generally fixed it up to be road worthy. Duckie decided that it was going to

Photos and story by Ron Drake be hers and she began putting her personal touches to the trailer. A short time later I found a manufactured 1947 Kit teardrop in Colorado that still had the original 1947 California license plates on it and, although in much better shape than the other, I refurbished it back to its original glory. We’ve had them in parades and car shows and have received positive comments about them. A couple of years ago I found a Modernistic Cub Sportster teardrop that was probably manufactured in 1946 or 1947. It has spent the last 35 years parked in a backyard of a Lemmon,

BEFORE THEY WERE VINTAGE Richard Fitchette of Flora Vista, New Mexico has been a trailer guy for decades. He is a subscriber to the VCT Magazine and was kind enough to send us a bunch of his photos and a handwritten note. These are the notes that were written on the backs of these few photos...

South Dakota home and was found to be overgrown with trees and bushes. I am currently taking it apart, scraping layers of paint off of the exterior and getting it ready for the road and to show. After the rally, Duckie wanted to tour the coastal highways of the Pacific Northwest in our teardrops. A couple of days after the rally, we headed to northern tip of Washington and took the old Highway 101 and Highway 1 down as far as San Francisco before heading east, back toward Utah. We began our drive down the coast at Olympic National Park in Washington and drove through some astoundingly beautiful

countryside. We visited many points of interest along the way including some of the old lighthouses and the Trees of Mystery and the gigantic statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox. I still have pictures of the kids sitting on Paul Bunyan’s boot when we were in that area over 40 years ago, camping in our old 1957 Shasta.

It was an enjoyable trip and pulling and camping in the teardrops was a delight thanks to favorable weather and the remote areas that were mostly free of tourists at that time of the year. But next time, I might get that old Shasta refurbished and take that instead. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Countertops Laminates and Trim With a little bit of patience and guidance you can complete this project yourself

At “Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design” we get a lot of Do-It-Yourselfers that purchase laminate and metal banding from us and create their own countertop masterpiece. But the truth is, you don’t need to be an expert craftsman to build a countertop. With a little bit of patience and guidance we are confident that anyone can complete this project. Before you begin, it’s important to have the right tools for the job, and the correct materials for your project.

Wilsonart Laminates When it comes to laminates for your counter-top, look no further than the Wilsonart collection. They are constantly coming up with new textures and styles to choose from and their retro collection is top notch. For those looking for a vintage look, you can’t go wrong with the boomerang series that feature a white or black background and are decorated with colored boomerangs that make you feel like you just sat down at a diner in the 50s. Speaking of the 1950s, we also carry the Retro Renovation series of laminates from Wilsonart. They have some great colors including Delightful Jade and First Lady Pink. They are two of the more popular colors that we receive inquires about. When it comes to the size of your laminates a 4’ x 8’ and 4’ x 10’ are going to be the most popular options offered. We have begun offering 5’ x 12’ sheets to our customers on select laminates. Pricing can vary depending on the series of laminate and size but expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 per sheet. 38

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

POPULAR FIRST LADY PINK BY WILSONART

Metal Banding When purchasing metal banding make sure you have the correct size needed for your countertop. Generally the countertop thickness will dictate the size of banding you are able to select. In addition to size there is also the style of metal itself. Fluted Tee Metal is popular for going around your countertop while aluminum coves are used for counter

top back splashes and other applications where a rounded corner is desired. Each metal also has its own available finishes. Brite dip and satin are the most popular finishes of metal edging. Installation will vary depending on the choices made above. If you choose a metal banding with a Friction T-lip you will need to cut a corresponding groove in the wood of the countertop for the T-lip to fit into. For this, you’ll need a 2 or 3 wing .080 cutter bit, with a ¼”shank. The lip depth on the back of the banding can vary. (See metal Banding How To Below Right) For banding that has no friction fit T-lip to mount with, some require screws, nails or adhesive. Our customers have let us know they have used adhesive such as Liquid Nails or Loctite PL400 and like the results.

The pricing for metal is much simpler than laminate. At Heffron’s our pricing is either $50.61 or $60.78 per 12 foot stick depending on style and size. Shipping will vary based on the length of the material. In order to ship the metal in full length, 12ft strips, you must ship via a freight delivery. Shipping “freight” is more expensive due to the larger package sizes. It may also require a commercial address or loading dock to receive the delivery. Heffrons can cut the metal to lengths of 8 feet or less to save some shipping costs by shipping with UPS or FedEx. Brite dip and satin are the most popular finishes of metal edging. Brite dip is a shiny finish like polished aluminum. Satin is a duller finish. The satin is etched and clear anodized. We wouldn’t recommend trying to polish this- if "shinny" is desired, order in the brite dip finish. The brite dip is also an anodized finish but is not etched like the satin so it is shiny like chrome. The kitchen mouldings have a high resistance to corrosion, and are easy to machine, cut, form or weld. They are easy to maintain and keep clean.

Metal Banding - How To Metal Banding assembly can be a very easy installation. If you’re capable of running a power saw, router, and hand tools than you’re ready to get started with Metal Edging! If you choose a metal banding with a friction T-lip on the back you will need a cut corresponding groove in the wood for the friction T-lip to fit into. For this you’ll need a 2 or 3 wing .080 cutter bit, with a 1/4 shank. PLEASE don’t make any cuts in the wood until you have the metal banding in hand to make sure the guard is set where the cut isn’t too deep. Wrapping Up This is really a very easy installation and you shouldn’t shy away from doing the project. If you’re capable of running a power saw, router and hand tools – you’re ready to get started. So good luck with your project and remember, for all of your laminate and metal needs head over to www. Heffrons.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Bumper stickers are available on the website! www.vintagecampertrailers.com

If you would like more instruction on the installation of Wisonart laminates, how to attach them to the wood base, how to trim the edges with a router you can find information on-line or attend Boot Camp. Boot Camp is an annual event held the first week of March in Northern California. Professionals restorers and trailerites get together for a weekend of camping and camaraderie. The event is hosted by the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine. For more information see the rally calendar in this issue or visit our website. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Hitched on Stitching Welcome to OPEN ROAD ABODE Needleworks: where we're getting hitched on travel trailers...one stitch at a time! by Melody Gilmore I have been having a wonderful time combining three passions of mine - cross-stitch, travel trailers, and postcards (see issue #4 of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine, October 2012: Greetings from Trailer Town Campground). Camping and visiting America's spectacular national parks is something else I love to do. Collecting vintage postcards of Yellowstone has been a popular hobby since my first trip in 1988. A lifetime resident of central Ohio, I always long for the days when I can discover a new trail or scenic campsite among the peaks and pines. In 2012, some of my glamping gurus asked if I could create cross-stitch patterns of their vintage campers. I shared those designs on social media along with some other trailerite creations. After numerous nudgings from friends and family over the years, I finally decided to start a design business (facebook at openroadabode or email openroadabode@gmail.com). My initial series included small 4x6" patterns printed on postcards. This year will introduce several larger designs and "camper samplers" (to be released at the Nashville Needlework Market in March). The timing couldn't seem to be more perfect as more and more Americans are hitting the open road and enjoying all the benefits that recreational living has to offer. Crafting while camping is also experiencing a surge in popularity...particularly needlework. Compact and portable, small projects can be packed in vehicles and trailers for your leisurely convenience. And they make great gifts for exchanges at gatherings or to add to your own lovely, camping dĂŠcor. I have created a special design for VCT readers that I hope you will enjoy stitching in whatever fabric and floss colors you desire"making it your own." Not a cross-stitcher, but would love to learn this simple form of embroidery? There are many basic tutorials on the Internet to get you started. Just like hitching, take one step (or stitch) at a time and have fun with all the adventures that await you with a needle and thread!

SUBSCRIBERS SOLUTION Contributed by Kim and Dan DePew Sierra Vista, AZ Upholstery by: Bill Boyce

We’ve owned our 1965 Silver Streak Sabre 20 for ten years. It’s been a blast learning and improving the trailer! Finally, now, we load up and camp without issues. We’re always brainstorming, though. When rebuilding The Streak, we ditched the gaucho bed and built a narrow dinette for two opposite the sink/stove. The original, larger dinette at the front is now the sleeping and sitting area. This intended sleeping

area was too tight for two. We added a telescoping, marine post under the little custom table so it makes into additional sleeping sturdy and easy. We’ve been storing our foam bed toppers every day rolled and stood in the shower. Under bed storage isn’t enough space. This arrangement worked unless we needed the shower for its natural purpose and had to haul the bedding out again! The bed area wasn’t comfortable for sitting with only pillows for back support.

I came up with a plan to store the foam toppers in sleeves matching the existing upholstery. Bill, our gifted upholsterer, executed my idea flawlessly. These bolsters are easy to use with full length zippers on the underside. Now we have a tidy daytime shower and couch!
