As a general rule of thumb, most of the wine you have purchased from big box stores are meant for shortterm storage and should be consumed within a year of purchase.

A WINE REFRIGERATOR COMES IN HANDY WHEN BRINGING WHEN TO SERVING TEMPERATURE

The proper serving temperature largely depends on the varietal or style. Red wine tastes its best when chilled between 58 to 65°F. White wines are usually at their best between 45 and 55°F. You can program the temperature inside a wine fridge to match the needs of the varietals you are placing inside. If the wine refrigerator has multiple independent temperature zones, you can use one zone for storage and the other for serving temperature. *These temperatures should only be used as a guideline. You can also bring your wine to serving temperature using a number of different methods that do not involve a wine fridge. You can place the bottle of wine into a bucket filled with ice and place a thermometer on the bottle to read the temperature of the bottle. Use a chilling decanter with a reservoir for an ice cup, which will cool the wine without diluting it. If you prefer an iceless method, try a champagne chiller, display chiller, chilling wrap, or a chilling stick with pourer. If you must warm the bottle, pour the wine into a decanter and let it sit at room temperature until it is at its ready to drink. There are many ways to chill your wine to serving temperature when a wine refrigerator is not an option.

WINE FOR BEGINNERS: BRING OUT THE BEST IN EVERY BOTTLE WITH THESE TIPS TEMPERATURE MATTERS Prep for a party by ensuring your wine is brought to the proper serving temperature. If you do not own a wine cellar or wine refrigerator, this may require placing your wine inside the fridge for about an hour to allow the wine to cool. If you are bringing your wine to a party, you can keep it cool during travel by using a bottle chilling wrap. You will also want to have a thermometer on hand to check the temperature of the bottle.

If you have forgotten to chill wine ahead of time, there are a few less conventional ways to bring the temperature down. Add a few frozen grapes to each wine glass. The grapes will chill the wine without diluting it like an ice cube. Similar results can be achieved using stainless ice cubes or spheres more commonly used to chill whiskey and other spirits. You can also fill an ice bucket with ice and about an 1/8 cup of salt. Place the wine in the center of the bucket and it will be ready to enjoy in about 5 to 10 minutes.

AERATE Using a wine aerator can help to relax the wine and open up its flavors and aromas. In a pinch, it is more convenient than a decanter as a decanter takes much longer to aerate the wine. Some aerators are also designed to remove sediment and have more than one aeration option, such as the Epicureanist Trilux Wine Aerator. Aerators are also compact in size, making them easy to use for travel.

If you are not short on time you can use a decanter to aerate your wine. Start by storing the bottle upright for about 24 hours to allow the sediment inside to settle to the bottom. Uncork the bottle and begin to empty the bottle into a decanter. Stop pouring as soon as you see any sediment reach the neck of the bottle. If the wine is older (over 10-15 years) then decant only for 30 minutes max. For younger wines, decant for about an hour or more.

Now, for the 1% of wine that is meant to be cellared long term, proper storage conditions are even more critical. Wines designed to be cellared for 10, 15, or 20 years are considered an investment and should be treated with care. Here is an essential guide with tips and tricks for aging wine.

THE BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR WINE For proper wine storage, keep wine under the following conditions: • Temperature: Warmer temperatures cause the wine to develop faster. Therefore, the space you designate for your wine should remain a consistent 55˚F. • Humidity: should be between 70-80%. While humidity inside the bottle is 100% due to the wine, the liquid is only touching half of the cork, leaving the rest of the cork in danger of drying out. Higher levels of humidity are ideal for wine, but greater than 80% and the moisture can destroy the labels on the wine bottles. • Darkness: Wine has a delicate chemical makeup that can be altered when exposed to intense light, particularly UV rays. Light also gives off excess heat. • Stillness: Unwanted vibration will cause a chemical reaction and kick up sediment that has settled inside the bottle. Redwood is primarily sourced from the damp forests of Northern California, which means it is naturally resistant to mildew, rot, and pests. Wine-Mate split cooling systems are designed and used to provide a stable temperature between 55~65 °F for a properly insulated room in a normal environment, while maintaining a humidity of 50~70% RH even when the environment becomes dry or humid. The condensing unit can be placed away from the wine room as far as 50 feet, which will bring an extremely quiet operation.

COOLING SYSTEMS Ducted cooling systems are designed for both outdoor and indoor installation to cut down noise. SSH condensing units can be located 50 ft away from the evaporator unit so that noise and compressor vibration are isolated. SSH evaporator units are designed to provide chilled air to a wine cellar through ducts and can be located up to 25 ft away, which also provides more installation flexibility.
