Top Nature & Wildlife Experiences  SUNRISE WITH WALLABIES  AND KANGAROOS

Capture some of Australia’s most iconic animals feeding on the shoreline at Cape Hillsborough Beach (also known as Casuarina Beach) as the sun rises over the Coral Sea.

 SPOT PLATYPUS IN THE WILD Broken River at Eungella National Park is the most reliable place to spot a platypus in the wild. See them in action at the platypus viewing platforms, or enjoy a scuba diving experience in rainforest waters at Finch Hatton.

 BUSHWALK IN NATIONAL PARKS

The national parks that are spread throughout The Mackay Region offer something for every bushwalker

from lush, green rainforest to rugged terrain and national parks that border the beach. Guided tours throughout Eungella National Park are an option for those who want further insight.

 SWIM AT FINCH HATTON GORGE Cool off in crystal clear waters after a bushwalk through the rainforest. The most popular spots for swimming are Araluen Cascades or the Wheel of Fire where you will find spectacular waterfalls and large rock pools.

 HOOK A BARRA

The Mackay Region offers some of the world’s best Barra fishing, whether it’s casting in the creeks during winter, or firing up the monster fish in the stocked impoundments over summer.

Top Parks in Mackay EUNGELLA NATIONAL PARK

Approximately 80 kilometres west of Mackay Australia’s longest stretch of sub-tropical rainforest and one of Queensland’s most ecologically diverse parks with 860 plant species and a wonderful variety of wildlife.

CAPE HILLSBOROUGH NATIONAL PARK

Approximately 50 kilometres north of Mackay Dense rainforest meets the ocean in this ruggedly scenic park with rocky headlands covered in hoop pines and volcanic rock formations. Meet the friendly wildlife on the beach at sunrise each morning.

CAPE PALMERSTON NATIONAL PARK 115 kilometres south-east of Mackay

This uncrowded coastline is best for 4WD enthusiasts, with windswept headlands, rainforest, swamp, sand dunes and beaches, along with the 344 metre Mount Funnel.

HOMEVALE NATIONAL PARK

70 kilometres south-west of Mackay Dramatic cliffs, peaks and spires, this park is set in a vast dry landscape and protects open woodland, brigalow and key fossil locations.

Within 45 minutes, you could be fishing from a tropical reef, a rainforest stream, a blue water river, a sandy estuary or an inland dam. The options are endless and varied for any angler.

Estuaries & Beaches

 Top Spot: The Pioneer River  One of the only true blue rivers in Australia, the Pioneer River is beautiful to look at and produces excellent fishing as well. From the river mouth to further upstream you’ll find Queenfish, King and Blue Salmon, and the jewel in the crown, the Barramundi.  Target Species: Barramundi There’s no more iconic Australian fish than the mighty Barramundi. A true bucket list species, anglers from all over the world come to Mackay to tackle this majestic creature. Barra can be targeted using bait, soft and hard bodied lures, trolling and even fly techniques. Barramundi aren’t just a legendary fighting fish – their table quality can’t be beat.

Freshwater Rivers & Dams

 Top Spot: Kinchant Dam If it’s that magical metre Barra you’re after, then look no further. Kinchant Dam is located just 30 minutes from Mackay, and is renowned for its monster Barra, and stocked Sooty Grunter and Sleepy Cod. Best of all, Barra in Kinchant Dam, like Teemburra and Eungella, can be targeted year-round with a Stocked Impoundment Permit.

With over 25 years’ experience fishing this region, no one knows the waterways better than Jason Kidd from Inshore Fishing Mackay. An expert in helping make those fishing dreams a reality, Jason shares his tips on fishing The Mackay Region.

“Mackay has so much to offer any angler no matter the experience level. For families and those looking for a good time with our bread and butter species, I would recommend along the Pioneer River or from our region’s beaches. If you’re looking for a huge variety of fish, or a feed, try Seaforth, where the net-free zone makes for terrific fishing. Want that magical metre Barra you can brag about? Then it’s got to be Kinchant Dam, the quality and quantity of the fish in there is legendary.”

 Target Species: Sooty Grunter Not as well known as the Barramundi, fishermen travel from far and wide nonetheless for that adrenaline burst of a Sooty Grunter strike. The rivers and creeks west of Mackay are full of Sooties, but if it’s a monster fish you seek, then head to Eungella Dam, which hosts the World Sooty Championships in May each year.

Offshore Islands & Reefs

 Top Spot: Islands of Seaforth Incorporating the net-free zone, the islands scattered off the coast of Seaforth provide spectacular fishing, well within sight of the mainland. Normally offshore species such as Coral Trout, Cobia and Red Emperor can all be caught here. Just be sure to check the Great Barrier Reef Marine zones before you head out.  Target Species: Spanish Mackerel The famous Spaniards are as hard fighting as they are delicious. Fast trolling lures or scented baits will often entice a bite. From that point on, it’s a case of hang on and enjoy the ride as these speedsters take off. To stand a chance against the famous Spanish Mackerel, you’ll need heavy duty gear. Wire trace is also recommended.

Seeing kids burst with excitement when they arrive at the park.

They just can’t wait to get out there. Then hearing all the laughter on the park, it’s priceless, especially from the adults, they have so much fun too.

What’s your favourite feature of the Park?

The Blast Bag Tower. Sitting on the end of the blast bag waiting to be launched is super nerve racking, then the countdown begins and all of a sudden you are sent flying through the air. Some kids go over 5 metres high. It’s such a thrill!

Why would you recommend the Aqua Park to visitors?

Laughter is the best medicine and there’s lots of it at Mackay Aqua Park. That’s why I recommend everyone over 4 years should visit the park. Whether it’s with the family, a bunch of your friends, back-packing up the coast or caravanning down, the park is fun for all ages.

Top Spots for the Family  BLUEWATER LAGOON – RIVER  STREET, MACKAY

Featuring three tiered lagoons, a 19.5 metre water slide and interactive children’s water playground with dropbucket, the lagoon also has barbecue facilities and is a safe and secure space for young and old.

 SCUBA DIVING – FINCH HATTON GORGE (MIN. AGE EIGHT YEARS)

It’s the only place in the world where you can scuba dive in platypus waters and the whole family can enjoy searching for unique aquatic life, including turtles, eels and fish species, as well as the platypus.

 MACKAY AQUA PARK – ANDERGROVE LAKES

Jump, bounce, slide and race on this giant inflatable fun park, providing hours of entertainment for young and old. Whether it’s fun, fitness or relaxation you’re after, the Park has it all.

 BOTANIC GARDENS – LAGOON STREET, WEST MACKAY Fun for the kids at the Bluewater Lagoon.

Did you know The Dudly Denny Library on Victoria Street in the Mackay City Centre is a high-tech, state-of-the-art learning facility with children’s areas and robotic teaching aids.

With over three kilometres of scenic tracks and boardwalks overlooking a beautiful lagoon, you can spend hours enjoying the views, learning more about the plant and wildlife or enjoying a bite to eat at the elevated café.

 SUGAR BOWL MACKAY – NORRIS ROAD, ANDERGROVE This state-of-the-art skate park features a three metre competition bowl, intermediate bowl and street run.

The park also features multi-sports court, grassed play area, climbing wall, parkour equipment, ping pong and barbecue areas.

 QUEENS PARK – GOLDSMITH STREET, EAST MACKAY

Featuring the region’s biggest and best playground, as well as an Orchid House, plenty of picnic space and a huge oval, this area is also the site of many local festivals and events.

 SARINA SUGAR SHED – FIELD OF DREAMS PARKLANDS, SARINA Join an educational and interactive tour to discover the history of the region’s sugar cane industry, watch how sugar is extracted from the cane on miniature processing and distilling equipment and taste a range of sweet delights and liqueurs made on site.

 WHALE WATCHING – LAMBERTS BEACH LOOKOUT, SLADE POINT

A state-of-the-art whale watching platform overlooks stunning Lamberts Beach, with 180 degree views of the Coral Sea. It’s a popular spot to watch migrating whales as they breach and play off the coast of Mackay.

Top Spots for Culture & Heritage  STEP BACK IN TIME 

Heritage Walk: Enjoy a self-guided tour through Mackay’s City Centre and learn about the history of the region and the unique art-deco buildings. This 90-minute walk can be done using a brochure available at local Visitor Information Centres.

Greenmount Homestead: Greenmount Homestead features a heritage-listed Queenslander homestead and historical collection of more than 20,000 items dating back to the early 1900s.

Melba House: The home of opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, built in 1882, is now a historical museum and Visitor Information Centre overlooking the Pioneer River on entrance to the Pioneer Valley. It displays memorabilia from Melba’s life and career.

Clermont Historical Centre: Learn about one of the most historical towns in northern Australia, including its gold rushes, copper mines, shearers, stockmen and squatters.

CULTURE & HERITAGE

 QUENCH YOUR ARTISTIC THIRST Artspace Mackay: One of the largest regional art galleries, Artspace Mackay displays new artwork every six to eight weeks and features international, national and local collections. It also conducts art trails and workshops for children, as well as an amazing collection of creative gifts handcrafted by Queensland artists.

Public Art: Discover over 100 public artworks on permanent display through Mackay’s City Centre and Bluewater Trail. Scattered along the Pioneer River, you will find large fishbone structures, as well as a nine-metre Mangrove Cap.

 SWEET EDUCATION

The Mackay Region is known as the Sugar City Capital of Australia and has a long and rich history of sugar cane farming. Find out more about the large South Sea Islander population at the South Sea Islander Hut at the Mackay Region Botanic Gardens, or take a tour of Australia’s only miniature sugar mill to get a hands-on insight into how sugar cane is harvested, crushed and processed.

Unique wildlife experiences, glorious sunrises over the beach and a rugged national park to explore, Cape Hillsborough and the Hibiscus Coast offers bucket-list experiences like no other.

 A BUCKET LIST EXPERIENCE 

The most famous faces of Cape Hillsborough National Park are the wallabies and kangaroos that feed on Casuarina Beach each morning at sunrise. A unique tour allows visitors to get up close and personal with these iconic animals and if you’re camping at the nearby Tourist Park, you can roll straight out of bed and witness this amazing experience each morning.

uibera Plant Trail (easy) Y 1.2 kilometre return Walk or drive along the gravel road to Hidden Valley. Take a self-guided trail to learn more about the Yuibera people’s traditional use of plants in the area.

Embark on several hikes around the Cape Hillsborough area and enjoy spectacular views along the way.

Beachcomber Cove Track (moderate) 2.2 kilometre return Start from the northern end of the Cape Hillsborough picnic area, and pass through open eucalypt forest and remnant rainforest with hoop pines, ferns and vines to Beachcomber Cove, with amazing views from the lookout. At low tide, you can return to Cape Hillsborough picnic area along the beach.

The Diversity Boardwalk (easy) 1.2 kilometre return This track features melaleuca woodland, mangrove and open eucalypt forest and vine thicket.

The first 300 metres is accessible to wheelchairs.

Andrews Point Track (moderate to difficult) 5.2 kilometre return or 2.8 kilometre return via beach Follow the beach to reach the start of this track. After climbing numerous steps at the beginning of the track, you will be rewarded

with spectacular views from several lookouts. At low tide, walk to Wedge Island or return to the picnic area along the beach.

 FISHING

The net-free fishing zones off the coast of Cape Hillsborough provide spectacular fishing year round. The area is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so ensure you know your zones when fishing in the area.

 CULTURE

The Yuibera people lived in Cape Hillsborough for thousands of years, and signs of their special connection to the area are still present. Mount Mandurana, known as The Leap, was the scene of a dramatic conflict between European settlers and Indigenous inhabitants. 4.2 kilometres return If you’ve made it to Araluen Cascades, keep walking (there’s some uphill sections) but you will be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall surrounded by sheer cliffs and cascades.

How to get there From Mackay City Centre, head north on the Bruce Highway, turning right onto the Mackay Bucasia Road. Continue until you reach the Eimeo Road roundabout. Built in 1923 as a Presbytery for the Catholic Church, the building was later turned into a convent for nuns until 1987 and went on to become a parish centre, respite care centre and now historical centre.

The Centre holds several collections including reflections on the region’s sugar cane, gold, coal and rail industries, as well as a look back at the school system, old furniture and fashion displays and more.

 SWEET EDUCATIONAL FUN

The Sarina Sugar Shed is a multi award-winning attraction and Australia’s only miniature sugar mill and distillery. The tours are an educational and interactive way to learn about the pioneers of the sugar cane industry, watch how sugar is extracted from cane and taste and purchase a range of sweet delights, including fairy floss, rum, speciality liqueurs, chutneys, sauces, fudge and more.

A small exhibition space for local artists or groups, collections range from paintings to hand-woven silk and other artworks.

CURIOUS ABOUT COAL One of the largest coal exporting ports in the world, the Port of Hay Point, features a public lookout over the two terminals. It’s located halfway between Sarina and Mackay.

Top Beaches ARMSTRONG BEACH

A picturesque stretch of coastline, where you can visit Freshwater Point, named by Captain Cook in 1770 when he was searching for fresh water.

SARINA BEACH

Fringed by an esplanade with park and barbecue facilities, Sarina Beach has sweeping gold sand, gentle waves and is a popular spot for nesting turtles. Nearby beachside accommodation and restaurants make this a great spot to stay for a few days.

Wide, spacious farm land is a key feature of Sarina and surrounding areas.

GRASSTREE BEACH

Grasstree Beach gives off a wonderful beachside vibe, with sweeping trees, a nice shallow bay for swimming and plenty of public facilities adjacent to the beach.

CAMPWIN BEACH

Campwin Beach shares the same stretch of coastline as Sarina Beach, with Leeper Reef and adjoining rock flats separating the two at low tide.

Oysters and mussels can be found on the rocks. It’s a popular spot for fishing straight from the beach.

SALONIKA BEACH

Salonika Beach is one of five pristine beaches in the area.

This two kilometre stretch of beach is ideal for swimming and relaxing with views out to Victor Island, just offshore. The area is well preserved, meaning you will spot plenty of wildlife including black cockatoos, sea eagles and bush turkeys.

In the cattle-grazing town of Nebo, the heritage-listed pub built in 1862 is the ideal place to get some great tucker or visit the Historic Nebo Museum for an insight into the town’s history.

At 572 metres, Wolfang Peak is one of the most popular peaks of the range and takes approximately one hour to summit.

Grab your hats, dust off your boots and roll up your swag for the annual Nebo Rodeo. It’s the town’s largest event, attracting competitors from across the country and has been touted as one of the best rodeo events in Australia.

Ghosts of the past

Visit the abandoned mining town of Mount Britton, a 35-minute drive north-east of Nebo. Founded in 1880, Mount Britton was once a thriving town with a population of 1500. Isaac Regional Council maintain markers on the original streets, and displays historic photographs on information boards to give you a glimpse of the town in the 1880s.

Fossick for gold in Clermont

Clermont is one of the most historic towns in northern Australia, with a colourful past, rich in drama and laced with tragedy.

Visit the Clermont Historical Centre to hear of the region’s interesting past, and tour the town to discover the 1916 Flood Memorial areas (including the Piano in the Tree), an eerie reminder of the height of one of Australia’s worst floods.

Go for a fossick on one of Clermont’s General Permission Areas and try your luck at striking gold.

Lord’s Table Mountain

Take in the sweeping views of the 320-metre-high Lord’s Table Mountain with its flat-topped plateau. There’s a picnic table and rest area at the scenic base.

Lake Elphinstone

A short drive from Glenden, Lake Elphinstone is one of the region’s best natural highlights. It’s a popular spot to set up camp, or try fishing, bushwalking, kayaking or water sports. The lake also offers birdwatching and wildlife encounters.

Theresa Creek Dam

Just 22 kilometres south-west of Clermont, Theresa Creek Dam is popular for skiing, swimming, fishing, camping or a scenic lunch at the kiosk.

The massive 7,200 hectare park protects a range of flora and fauna, making it a nature-lover’s dream location. The distinctive Mt Funnel stands at 344 metres high and offers breathtaking views towards the Northumberland Islands.

 CARMILA

The charming community of Carmila is a blend of beachfront bliss with country character. Camp near the ocean and reel in fish for dinner (well known for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Trevally and Flathead).

 GREENHILL AND ILBILBIE

An idyllic location with wonderful views of the ocean and surrounding district. Visit Yarrawonga and Notch Point Reserves to go camping, fishing and crabbing. Turtles nest on local beaches from around midOctober to January.

GETTING AROUND

By Air Mackay Airport is serviced by major carriers; Virgin Australia, QantasLink and Jetstar. Short-term and long-term car parking is available. Taxis can be located upon arrival and a number of rental car companies operate from the airport terminal.

By Taxi Taxis are available throughout The Mackay Region, call 131 008 to book a pickup, or look for the taxi ranks within the city and at Mackay Airport.

Charter services from Mackay Airport provide a 25-minute direct flight to Hamilton Island.

Moranbah Airport is a 10-minute drive from the town of Moranbah and is serviced by QantasLink and Virgin Australia, providing direct flights to Brisbane. Short-term and long-term car parking is available. Taxis and rental cars are available at Moranbah Airport.

By Rail Take a journey aboard the Spirit of Queensland with Queensland Rail Travel to Mackay. Choose from premium economy seats or the lie-flat, meal inclusive RailBed. The Mackay Train Station is located at Paget, 5km south of the City Centre.

By Road Major coach operators include Mackay in their scheduled services from other destinations throughout Queensland and major cities along the coast.

The drive time to Mackay from Cairns is approximately 8.5 hours, and from Brisbane is approximately 11 hours.

By Bus Mackay Transit Coaches operate a public bus schedule, linking Mackay city with outer suburbs, including Mirani, Sarina, Walkerston and the Northern Beaches.

SWIMMING

Marine stingers (dangerous jellyfish) can be present in the ocean. The high-risk season is from October to May. Please observe warning signs and swim at patrolled beaches. Where possible, wear a protective stinger swimsuit. If in doubt, ask a lifeguard for advice.
