Where Mining Meets the Arena: Milestones in a
66-Year Partnership
From a Rotary fundraiser in 1959 to today’s Southern Hemisphere showcase, Mount Isa Mines has been in the chutes since day one.
1959 - It All Kicked Off
The first Mount Isa Rodeo was staged in September 1959 at Spear Creek by a visionary local committee (including Mount Isa Rotarians) determined to put a young outback mining town on the map and raise funds for local causes. Mount Isa Mines backed the event from the start, establishing a partnership that would span generations.
1960 - Growing Crowds, Growing Stakes
Early prize purses were modest – a little over £500 in the early years, but the community spirit, alongside Mount Isa Mines support, drew more riders, stock and spectators each season, helping the rodeo become a fixture on the Australian circuit.
1970-1980s - From Local Show to National Drawcard
As Mount Isa’s mining operations expanded, so did the rodeo. Increased sponsorship, infrastructure upgrades and national media attention saw competitor numbers surge and visitor caravans roll in from across Australia.
1990s - Community Legacy Deepens
By the 1990s the rodeo had become a major annual fundraiser and tourism driver, reinforcing the intertwined fortunes of Mount Isa Mines, local businesses and civic groups. Event add ons like balls, parades and community quests broadened its reach beyond the arena rails.
2000s - Scaling Up and Modernising
Operational scale demanded modern event management, safety systems and larger spectator capacity. Strategic sponsorship from Mount Isa Mines helped professionalise delivery as crowds and television exposure grew. Debates about tradition vs. growth marked the era, proof of how much the community cared.
Mid 2000s-2010s - Buchanan Park Era
The rodeo’s move and continued development at Buchanan Park cemented a purpose built red dirt arena experience capable of hosting tens of thousands, main stage concerts and full festival programming. Mount Isa Mines stayed in the chute as Naming and Foundation Partner, helping scale the site and spectator experience.
2019 - 60 Years in the Saddle
The event celebrated its 60th anniversary, highlighting its journey from humble local ride to the largest and richest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. Anniversary storytelling reinforced decades of Mount Isa Mines sponsorship and community volunteerism.
2022-2024 - Expanding the Arena: Indigenous Rodeo Championships
Mount Isa Mines sponsorship expanded to include the inaugural Indigenous Rodeo Championships, creating a platform for First Nations riders, cultural exchange and new youth pathways.
Tourism and Events Queensland research for the 2023 event confirmed significant direct expenditure for Mount Isa and across Queensland, underscoring the rodeo’s regional economic muscle and the value of sustained corporate community partnerships.
Financial headwinds saw Isa Rodeo Ltd enter voluntary administration, sparking intense community discussion about governance, tradition and the rodeo’s future. Through it all, the event’s importance to local identity and the outback calendar never wavered.
2025 - Mount Isa Mines Rodeo Stands Proud
With a new Rodeo Board and broad community, council and partner support, the 2025 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo charges ahead (8–10 August 2025, Buchanan Park). As a foundation partner from the beginning, Mount Isa Mines is honoured to help steady the reins and back a new era of locally led rodeo action.
LET’S RIDE TOGETHER. Whether you’ve been here since ‘59 or it’s your first time on the rails, thank you for keeping Australia’s biggest rodeo proudly Mount Isa. Mount Isa Mines, Foundation Partner since day one.
Miner or cowboy? Shilo sees himself as a cowboy first, however, his career in mining has been important in supporting his passion for competing in rodeos over his lifetime.
- Shilo Gosbee, Ringfirer George Fisher Mine
